Electric windows (EP) are one of the vehicle elements that contribute to more comfortable driving. Like any other electrical circuit component, EDs tend to break down periodically. What to do if a car window regulator does not work and for what reasons these components break - read below.

How does a window regulator work?
The window regulator is a simple metal track bolted to the inside of the door. It takes the rotational movement of a crank handle or the movement of a window lift motor and turns it into a vertical movement.
There are two types of window regulators. Classic cars usually have a parallelogram type that looks like a pair of scissors when in motion. Crank mechanisms rotate the angle of one adjuster arm, causing a pivot point and moving another arm connected to the window track, which in turn moves the window up or down.
The modern electrical regulator is a cable system. An electric motor moves a cable through a pulley system that raises or lowers the window, like a tiny drawbridge. While both systems are reliable, they have several parts that can wear out.
Note: Power windows are a convenient option for opening and closing windows that have become universal in recent years. Even the cheapest cars on the market, like the tiny Mitsubishi Mirage, have available power windows. Instead of having to lift the window yourself using a crank, you simply press a button and the servo motor starts rotating a gear connected to the regulator or cable system.
Video “Replacing ED at home”
Hi all! Dear friends, you are all aware of what “jambs” and shortcomings each of us “happy” owners of domestic VAZ cars have to eliminate. Today’s article is another life-saving solution for those who are faced with the problem of poorly functioning beet lifters.
Electric windows (ESP) have been installed on foreign cars for decades, so, as a rule, there are no problems with them, which cannot be said about VAZs. On “our” swallows, such a miracle has been occurring for about 10 years, and as practice shows, the good old “meat grinders” in the form of a simple mechanical handle worked much more reliably. Get to the point! A defect was noticed on many models from 2109 to 2115, where, as a rule, the front right glass does not rise well. Moreover, the window lifters slowly raise somewhere from the middle or even lower, the glass slows down or stops rising altogether. At the same time, drivers help the ESP either with their hand or with a “clarion word”.
Manual window lift repair and possible problems
Manual lifts are the easiest way to raise and lower windows, other than the leather straps found on turn-of-the-century cars. This means they are reliable and have few problems over the life of the vehicle. However, problems arise from time to time. The bottom line is that when you turn the window handle and the window does not go up or down, either the crank mechanisms are worn out or the regulator is faulty. Also, crankshafts are sometimes made of plastic, which can wear out with repeated use.
Or perhaps the adjuster arm is not aligned in its bottom guide. Often this results in the pivot point simply being cut out. To fix it, take a screwdriver and remove the handle to check the gear teeth. If the gear teeth are fine, remove the door panel and look at the adjuster track.
If the handle does not turn, it means the adjuster is stuck. The most likely cause is that the small wheels on the tracks may have caught something. To check that the mechanism is working properly, remove the door panel, put on the handle and turn it while watching the adjuster for track jams.
The first step in any electric window problem is to press the window up/down switch and listen. If you don't hear anything, there may be a problem with the switch or lift motor. The switch is easier and cheaper to replace, so start there.
If the rear windows do not respond
If the rear windows are not working, try a simple solution and check the driver's door lock switch. It may have accidentally caught on something, and if activated, it will interfere with the operation of the rear window controls.
If all windows do not work
If all windows stop working at the same time, the cause is a broken fuse or relay that needs to be checked or replaced. On newer cars, especially coupes without a window frame, the engine has a computer module that counts gear revolutions so it can keep track of where the window is and when to stop raising it. If the module does not have stable power or has been powered down, it will not know whether the window is up or down, so it needs to be reinitialized.
Slow motion
If symptoms such as slow rise or lack of movement occur, the window motor may be worn out. Like any electric motor, window regulators can burn out over time. Visually, the lift motor will not show any problems, but if your car is more than 10 years old, it may be time to replace the lift motor.
Raising windows with delay or jerks
Windows that wobble when going up or down are usually not a regulator problem. This is most likely due to the need for maintenance on the window track. For full-frame windows, the left and right sides of the window act as a guide for the glass. To fix the damage, apply silicone grease to the guides and raise and lower the glass several times.
Important: Window regulators are often out of sight and not noticeable until problems arise. A little patience and lube will help you get things back on track.
Also, problems with the way your car's window system works could signal a problem that may worsen over time, perhaps even causing the window to not move up or down at all.
Tracks or contacts in the mounting block
Another reason may be a broken contact of the mechanism relay in the mounting block.
Considering the circuit of the mounting block, we can conclude that a constant plus comes to pin 30 through a fuse, and when we turn on the ignition, we apply another plus to pin 85. As a result of turning on the ignition, an electromagnetic field appears, which closes pins 30 and 87, which provides power to window lift buttons.
This means that if the operation of the plus on the ignition switch is disrupted, the contacts stop closing, even if the relay is in working condition. You can check this by closing contacts 30 and 87 directly, then the plus will come without the ignition switch and if the problem is in it, then the power windows will work.
The video demonstrates another solution to this problem:
But there may also be the opposite situation, that we do not have a constant positive supply to pin 30, and when we turn the ignition key, the contacts close, but nothing happens. In this case, it is best to ring the contact with a tester and find out whether there is constant voltage. For testing, you can connect the plus directly to pin 87, but this is not safe, since the wire will go outside the fuse.
How does the power window system work?
The operating principle is actually easier to understand than you might think. The system motor receives power through the wiring and is regulated by a fuse. Then, when you press the power window switch, the motor rotates. From there, an adjuster inside your window's clutch converts this rotation into an up and down motion.
In manual window systems, the mechanism is almost the same, and the initial rotation is made when you turn the window handle inside the car by hand.
When the parts inside a power or manual window system begin to wear out, it can cause the window to move incorrectly or not move at all.
Repair of the right electric window on a VAZ 2115
Well, I decided to do it myself, but I also had plans to glue the door with an anti-squeak so that when driving I wouldn’t hear the rattling of the door cards and also glue the inside of the door, I completely removed the door card
For a long time I looked at what was inside and then I saw that there was a door itself, there were glass seals, for me it was a surprise since I had never looked there, I thought, let’s raise the glass, press the button and see that the window doesn’t want to go up at all, well, I made up my mind I knocked with a hammer as Miracle Man wrote, I knocked completely, I didn’t crush the seal, I pressed the button, but the same thing for you, I myself didn’t believe in it because I noticed that the glass didn’t even rise to the middle normally and something else was preventing it, I took it out Full internal and external glass seal
I cleaned it thoroughly, took silicone spray and lubricated it as expected, after waiting a little, I put on the seal and let’s quickly check that it’s on. I press the ignition button and I don’t know how it started working, but it didn’t work like that when I bought the car, it was always dead, and this one flies, but so far without this glass seal
I put the seals on... I start it up and oh yeah, nothing is missing, it works great, oh I think, what if you start the car, it’s a beast. Damn, so much joy, even I’m shocked. I'm starting to glue the doors.
When I put the door cards back on and tightened everything up, I was pleasantly surprised, the brothers-in-law don’t rattle and everything is neat, the glass flies, the doors don’t fasten and I’m jumping in my soul with joy, and lastly, a video that I advise you to watch to the end which glass I had and which steel, thank you all for reading me.
Common causes of breakdowns
1. The power window motor begins to fail or stop working completely, causing the system to not function properly. This may cause the window to rise and fall slowly or stop working completely. When you press the window control switch, this problem may cause the motor to make a labored sound or not be heard at all, depending on its condition.
2. Bad Regulator: Since the regulator is responsible for the vertical movement of your window, it can wreak havoc on the system if something goes wrong. If the regulator is the culprit for the window sticking, you should hear the motor running when you press the control switch. However, there are times when a faulty window motor or power window exhibits the same problem, requiring the door panel to be removed for closer examination and inspection using the appropriate diagnostic tools.
3. Faulty window tracks: The tracks hold the window panel in place as it moves up and down. However, if the panel deviates from the track, it typically cannot move at all, causing your window to simply “fall” into the door. If this happens, you may hear a noise when you try to operate your window.
4. Blown Fuse or Bad Relay: If none of your windows go up or down, a blown fuse or worn out relay could be the likely culprit. Although these are two different problems, their symptoms often present in the same way. However, it is worth considering that without the proper diagnostic equipment, tracking down a faulty relay can be problematic, and you may ruin other working systems if you start checking fuses left and right.
5. Faulty Window Wiring or Switch: Since wiring is the means of powering the window system, a faulty switch, short circuit, or other related problems will cause your windows to stop working altogether. When it comes to wiring problems, it is imperative that a mechanic trace the problem using the proper diagnostic tools. Otherwise, this repair will be like looking for a needle in a haystack, and you risk damaging other components.
Button
Another reason why the power windows on a VAZ 2114 do not work may be the control button. Inside it there is contact between the plates, the strength of which deteriorates over time. As a result of this, it completely disappears, and the button stops responding to pressing.
All buttons must be in good condition, as they are connected in series. If one fails, you won't be able to diagnose the problem by removing it from one door and putting it on another. In this case, you will have to purchase a new button and switch them around, identifying which one has stopped working.
The price is within 200 rubles, so carrying out such diagnostics is not that expensive.
Is it possible to install a homemade drive?
This question arises among many “Kulibins”. There is no information about such devices. And is it necessary, if in our time there are no special difficulties in purchasing standard equipment? At one time, there were small boxes on sale that were attached directly to the trim instead of a handle that had to be turned by the person sitting near the door. Nowadays it is hardly possible to find such devices not only on sale, but also in warehouses of unnecessary things.
And one more question that often worries our car owners: is it advisable to remove other cars from the doors of early production cars that are not equipped with electric drives? As they say, there are no barriers for inquisitive minds and skillful hands. But we must not forget that in addition to the motors, you will have to make changes to the electrical circuit, providing it with additional relays, switches and fuses
. If you have no experience working with electronics, such experiments are highly undesirable. In addition, it is not recommended to introduce design features that were not taken into account by the manufacturer. If the desire to do tuning is too strong, seek help from car service specialists who can install an electric drive on your car.
Step-by-step instruction
The cable is being replaced
Let's consider the procedure in detail. Initially, turn off the power from the battery. Otherwise, it is recommended to remove the fuses for the cigarette lighter and vehicle lighting circuits. Then the door trim is dismantled. This process is easy. For beginners, it is recommended to use a universal pin remover. To remove the standard glass raising mechanism, you will need to fix the glass in a certain position.
To do this, use available materials, including tape. The next step involves removing the rubber plugs from the holes for the cable outlets and the side trims under the panel instruments. If necessary, the side upholstery cannot be removed. You can also gain access through special openings. In this case, broaching is used. It is inserted into the channel of the stand.
Then the adjustment plate is attached to the glass bracket using M6 bolts. You will first need to install it in the inclined groove. Before connecting the window regulators to the VAZ 21099, you will need to insert the folded mechanism into the upper hole. It is secured with 3 M6 nuts and lock washers. The screw is installed in the middle hole.
Then you will need to remove 2 decorative plugs located on the front panel. To do this, disconnect the wire from the cigarette lighter. The cable is pulled through the holes in the doors and their pillars. It must be taken into account that these wires and those that go to the electric motor should not come into contact with moving parts of the system. The wiring is secured with electrical tape or tape.

Where is the door window lift located?
On cars of the Samara 2 family, different types of window lifters are installed, namely, there are electric ones in the front, and mechanical ones in the back (If the car is in a top configuration, then there are electric ones in the back), both types are hidden in the door itself and you won’t see them without removing the trim, so for For clarity, in the photo below, the trim was removed from the front door of the car, and the window regulator itself is indicated by a red arrow in this photo.
