Timing belt Daewoo Nexia: replacing the timing belt

The Korean car Daewoo Nexia is in fact a budget development that combines individual GM technologies, developments from the German concern Opel, etc. One way or another, the low initial cost, affordable prices for spare parts and fairly inexpensive maintenance make this car popular.

At the same time, one of the important points written in the manual and relating to scheduled maintenance of the Daewoo Nexia car is the replacement of the timing belt. According to the regulations established by the manufacturer, replacement is carried out every 60 thousand kilometers. However, it is important to understand that this is an average resource.

Belt wear can occur much earlier than expected. This will depend on the operating conditions and quality of the part itself, as well as a number of other factors. Next, we will look at what factors influence the reduction in belt life and how to replace the timing belt on a Nexia, depending on the type of internal combustion engine (Nexia 8-valve engine and Nexia 16-valve engine).

Replacing the timing belt Daewoo Nexia 1.6 16 valves

The gas distribution mechanism is a very significant component in every car.
Violations in its operation can lead to serious malfunctions. Therefore, this unit should be given serious attention. One of the main elements of the timing belt is the belt drive. Here we will talk about replacing the timing belt on a sixteen-valve Daewoo Nexia 1.6. A timing belt is a rubber product made in the shape of a hoop. On the inside of the product there are teeth that engage the belt with the gears. The purpose of the belt is to synchronize the operation of the shafts and ensure coordination of the functioning of the water pump.

Replacement procedure

Replacing the timing belt Nexia 16 valves is not a complicated operation, which can be performed independently by an experienced driver. No special tools or equipment are required; replacement of worn parts can be done in the garage. In addition to purchasing new consumables to replace worn ones, you should prepare:

  1. Car jack.
  2. Anti-recoil shoes.
  3. Stands for car body.
  4. Set with socket and socket wrenches.
  5. Set of hexagons.
  6. The key is special for “41”.
  7. Rags.

Item resource

The manufacturer promises that the belt will have to be changed no earlier than after 60,000 km. But this regulation may be violated if the car is operated incorrectly. Under excessive loads, extreme driving style of the car owner and bad roads, the service life of the belt drive can be significantly reduced. All this suggests that it is necessary to check the condition of the belt from time to time and replace it if the need arises.

The following symptoms will indicate an urgent need to replace the belt drive:

If these signs are detected, it is imperative to carry out a visual inspection of the belt. If, when examining the belt, cracks or chips were found on its surface, then this is a clear sign that it needs to be replaced. Oil leaks will also indicate the need for replacement. This means that the seals are also worn out and are leaking oil. And it greatly corrodes the structure of the belt, and after a while it can break. If the structure of the belt begins to delaminate, then individual threads will begin to appear on its end parts. This can also cause slippage or breakage.

Failure to replace the belt in a timely manner may cause it to break. If this happens, the crankshaft will continue to operate but the camshaft will stop. The valves will begin to hit the pistons, which will cause deformation of the latter. In short, real chaos will begin in the engine, the consequences of which can be disastrous. Therefore, it is so important to constantly monitor the condition of the strap. Sometimes the belt can break for other reasons, for example, due to the pump jamming.

Replacement timing

The operating instructions for this car recommend replacing worn out timing drive parts with a mileage of no more than 60 thousand km. However, in some cases this mileage may be slightly different. Its mileage depends on the operating conditions of the car, driving style, and the quality of spare parts used. Experts recommend checking the condition of the timing mechanism drive parts every time a technical condition is carried out. The presence of technical fluids in the working area of the timing drive is especially harmful. The most optimal mileage before replacement is 50 thousand km.

Replacing the belt yourself

Replacing a timing belt is a rather responsible procedure, which, however, can be carried out by any even slightly trained car enthusiast. Of course, you can entrust this matter to professionals, they will do everything efficiently, but where will you then gain the necessary experience...

So, if you decide that you will change the belt yourself, then first prepare everything you need. First, you will need a standard set of keys:

Of course, in addition to this, you will have to prepare a new set of consumables, which, in addition to the belt itself, should include a set of rollers and oil seals. Don't skimp on the belt. Buy only high-quality consumables. Experts recommend the following brands of belts:

And if you save on buying a belt, then get ready for the fact that you will have to change it again very soon, since cheap products fail faster. And now directly about the procedure for replacing the belt.

9. Unscrew the power steering pump lock. To do this, use a 12. 10 key. Now you will have to unscrew 2 more screws in order to remove the tension roller. 11. Now remove the timing belt.

The belt has been removed. Now we prepare a new consumable and install it.

1. We will carry out the installation process in reverse. Do not forget to ensure that there is no play on the cooling system pump. There should be no refrigerant leakage from the cooling system. Bearings should not make noise. If noise is present, the bearings should be replaced with new ones. 2. Now we check the correct location of the marks on the camshafts and the power unit. If everything is fine, we begin to tighten the new belt. It should be tightened by turning the pump. A special device is used for this. If it is missing, you should navigate by the marks, although this is much more difficult. To do this, take a 17mm wrench and loosen the camshaft mounting screw. There is no need to turn it out completely. After installing the belt, return the pulley to its place. 3. Now scroll the crankshaft to the right 2 times. We make sure that all marks match. The mark on the tension roller should align with the protrusion on the platform. 4. Turn on first speed, press the brake, thereby preventing the crankshaft from turning. 5. If necessary, the cooling system is replenished with liquid. 6. The belt is tensioned using a tension roller. Remember that the golden mean is important here - the belt should not be overtightened, and sagging is also not allowed.

Comments and reviews

Timing belt tension roller. It is recommended to change the belt and roller at the same time. The best choice here would be the INNA video. Expensive, but believe me, it's worth it. Alternator belt with power steering is the size and, accordingly, without power steering. For Daewoo Lanos, the size of the belt is better, for Daewoo Nexia it is better. Air conditioning belt tensioner roller. As a last resort, if you have difficulties purchasing a roller, you should stock up on a bearing for it. It will not be difficult to repress it Photo 2. I am not including the pump in this list, although some may not agree with me.

But it’s still better to deal with it after the fact - we took it apart, looked at it, found traces of leaking coolant or a humming bearing, and ran to buy a pump. Loosen the three #12 bolts securing the power steering pump pulley.

Unscrew the top bolt securing the generator, loosen the tension on the generator belt and remove it. In order to remove the power steering pump pulley, you need to tilt the engine slightly to the side off the mountings.

Unscrew the 3 10mm bolts and remove the upper part of the timing belt cover.

Now let's move on to the bottom of the engine. Jack up the car and remove the right front wheel. I recommend placing a reliable support under the threshold for safety. Remove the air resonator and unscrew the plastic protection on the side of the engine.

If an air conditioner is installed, loosen the tension roller and remove the air conditioner belt. The crankshaft pulley mounting bolt is tightened to Nm. We unscrew two bolts at the top and two at the bottom, one of the bolts is located on the right side of the air conditioning compressor, it is very inconvenient to photograph and remove the metal protection. You'll have to rack your brains a little to get it out.

We unscrew the three bolts of the water pump, those that are hidden under the protection. We place a basin under the engine, since some of the antifreeze remains in the block and when dismantling the pump it will pour onto the ground.

We clean the seat and wipe it dry. Lubricate the pump's o-ring with a thin layer of sealant and put it in place. We turn it as counterclockwise as possible. We do not tighten the bolts too much since it still needs to tension the timing belt. We install iron protection, idler and tension rollers, and then camshaft pulleys.

We check that all marks match.

Daewoo Nexia 2006 1.5 16V — timing belt replacement + pump

How to set timing marks on a Daewoo Nexia

When carrying out maintenance and repair of the timing belt on the Daewoo Nexia, it is absolutely necessary to set the piston of the 4th cylinder to the top dead center (TDC) position. This is done so that during the timing service valve timing does not go astray.

The installation of the piston in the TDC position is indicated by the alignment of the marks on the camshaft/crankshaft pulleys and the timing case .

It should be noted separately that the Daewoo Nexia with a 16-valve engine has two camshafts , each of which has a fixed pulley. On cars with an 8-valve engine, only one camshaft with one pulley .

Which belt to buy

Not only the efficiency of the engine, but also its service life depends on the correct choice of engine components. This fully applies to the choice of timing belt for the Daewoo Nexia engine. The Nexia 16 cl timing belt kit includes not only a toothed belt, it also includes idler rollers and oil seals. In some cases, the pump in the engine cooling system is changed at the same time. After a long run, the pulleys on the camshafts and crankshaft wear out and are also replaced.

Experts recommend using kits from the following manufacturers:

When giving preference to one manufacturer or another, you should pay attention to the quality of the product offered. In automobile markets you can buy a fake that is very similar to a branded product. You should also be wary of the cost of the product. A quality product cannot have a low price. Having received some savings on spare parts, you can spend a significant amount on engine repairs.

Additional Information

Setting the timing belt to the TDC position may be required in many cases:

Any Daewoo Nexia driver with at least 3 years of driving experience should be able to set the timing belt to the top dead center position.

Although this work is not the easiest, an experienced craftsman installs the piston of the 4th cylinder in just 1 hour.

It is worth paying attention that when replacing the coolant pump, before installing the timing belt according to the marks, you need to drain the used coolant . This work is best done at the very beginning, before removing the accessory belt.

The coolant is drained using a valve on the main radiator of the Daewoo Nexia .

Step-by-step instruction

We remove the air intake pipes, the air filter housing and everything connected to them. This is the picture we get.

Unscrew the bolts securing the protective timing cover and remove it. We also loosen the bolts securing the power steering pulley. So that he doesn’t swear later trying to stop him.

Loosen the generator mounting bolt, move it towards the engine and remove the generator belt.

Remove the right wheel and the plastic mudguard from below. Drain the antifreeze.

Now we see the crankshaft pulley.

Set the top dead center

Use the crankshaft bolt to rotate the entire gas distribution mechanism until the mark on the camshaft pulley and the housing coincide.

Remove the power steering pulley. The photo has already been taken. But the crankshaft mark is visible and it coincides with the pointer. Unscrew the two hydraulic booster mounting bolts. Do not drain the power steering fluid!

We remove the crankshaft pulley and see that the marks on it match. Unscrew the crankshaft bolt with the help of a partner. We engage fifth gear, press the brake and unscrew it with a slight movement of the hand.

Unscrew the bolts of the lower protective cover and remove it.

Replacing the pump

Loosen the three pump mounting bolts; they are hexagonal. They are not visible in this photo; after removing the protective casing, I will mark them. Using a special wrench, turn the pump until the timing belt loosens and remove it. Remove the camshaft pulley. The bolts for fastening the protective casing were hidden under it. And two more below. We unscrew them.

We move the casing and see just three bolts securing the pump.

Replacing the thermostat

And on top is the hero of the occasion, the thermostat in its own housing. We remove it and change it.

We remove the water pump and lubricate its gasket with a thin layer of sealant to prevent it from leaking later. There is no point in changing it, it is still new.

Thermostat, special key and water pump.

We put the water pump in place. There is a tension indicator on the tension roller; after tensioning the belt, the arrow should be opposite the groove.

Daewoo Nexia tit › Logbook › How timing marks should be located

Hi all. The deflection pulley whistled, we will change it, and at the same time I will check the timing marks, there is a suspicion that they are knocked down.

There is a stamping on the casing; I place the mark on the gear clearly in the center of this mark. The mark on the casing is shifted clockwise by five minutes. I also set the crankshaft five minutes in front, and the marks on the upper shafts look like this:

In short, they are not against each other, if you set the crankshaft exactly at six o'clock, the marks converge, but it seems to me that they are slightly lower than they should be.

And according to the book, the crankshaft should stand at six o’clock:

Or maybe what for these bottom marks? According to the indicator, the piston is exactly at TDC, and the top marks are on top of each other in the center of the gears. Who thinks what, give me some smart advice.

Daewoo Nexia Akkurat › Logbook › Replacing the timing belt, rollers and pump

I've been meaning to do this for a long time, but the toad kept choking me... But I did it anyway!

After the odometer has exceeded 100,000 km, there is no doubt left, it’s time to change the timing belt! Moreover, I no longer felt confident behind the wheel: to one degree or another, there was a fear that the belt would break and the valves would bend...

I studied a bunch of BZs of other sixteen-valve Nexias, studied several manuals on replacing the timing belt and pump, and still decided to do it myself! Because a good service specializing in repair and maintenance of DAEWOO asked for about 3,500 rubles for the work, and such expenses are now extremely undesirable for me. In the end, I thought about it, my hands seem to grow from the right place, I don’t seem to be a fool with my brain, I have the tools, it’s possible to do everything in the garage in a pit, there is no urgent need for a car (since I drive a company car 5 days a week, and on weekends I either I drink alcoholic beverages and naturally don’t get behind the wheel, and if I need to go somewhere, there are other cars under the seat, so my Nexia is now like a car for my soul and my hobby :)) and the rather lengthy repair did not frighten me. And so, having purchased plenty of spare parts, I began to make it and did it in a total of 10 hours (this despite the fact that the repair essentially lasted for a week, because at work we also not only drive the bulldozer, but also work :)). I’ll say right away that it took so much time because everything was done for the first time, everything was done step by step, carefully, slowly, with the fear of doing something wrong, with all the spare parts and bolts laid out, inspected all the components and cleaning them along the way, the assembly was carried out with double checks for correct installation and tightening of all kinds of bolts and fasteners. Here are the spare parts:

We couldn’t do without a special key, it’s certainly expensive, but with it, tensioning the timing belt caused absolutely no difficulties or problems.

During disassembly, difficulties were caused by three hex bolts that secure the pump to the cylinder block: one unscrewed without problems, the other two did not give way and the internal edges were licked off (VD40 did not help at all, well, that’s understandable, the pump is still original, it looks like it has never been removed , the bolts stuck very tightly), only a hammer and a chisel helped here :) during assembly I used new intact bolts, which I advise you to do. In principle, the condition of all the mechanisms is very satisfactory, except for the fact that a lot of poop has accumulated in the cooling system again, despite the fact that literally last fall I flushed the system and completely changed the antifreeze, the old liquid was purely rusty in color and did not smell green at all, although the temperature always normal and even in 32 degree heat in traffic jams with the air conditioning on, the engine did not overheat. After 20 kilometers, the new antifreeze also took on a rusty tint...

Necessary tool

We definitely change the pump because the belt is tensioned by it and as soon as we touch it the o-ring will definitely leak. To replace it, we will need a special key for 41. Its price is a little more than a thousand rubles, but if the procedure is one-time, it can be made from metal 1 mm thick and bent as in the photo. One time is enough.

As well as a universal pulley holder, the tool is not required, but it is more convenient with it.

First of all, we buy everything you need: pump, belt, tension and idler pulley.

In Nexia, the engine under the hood occupies almost all the space and this promises us some difficulties. It is very inconvenient to unscrew the front engine mount, but putting it back in place is even more fun. I always remember several times the mother of the Uzbeks who installed this engine like that.

Timing belt for Daewoo Nexia and its features

The timing belt is a simple and at the same time important element of the car, designed to synchronize the camshaft and crankshaft. The main task is to set the timing belt in motion and prevent valves and pistons from colliding with each other.

By the way, we can highlight the features of timing belts with different engines:

In any case, both on 8-valve and 16-valve internal combustion engines, the condition of the timing belt must be monitored and changed strictly according to the regulations or even earlier if necessary.

Checking the marks and replacing the Daewoo Nexia timing belt

First of all, the gas distribution mechanism is a complex device consisting of one camshaft or two shafts for a number of exhaust and intake valves, as well as auxiliary parts and elements.

The camshaft is driven by a belt. At the same time, one rule must be strictly observed in the timing mechanism: the position of the shafts relative to each other must not change. De-synchronization is also not allowed. However, if the timing belt breaks or wears out, the synchronization will be disrupted. Accordingly, the operation of the entire gas distribution mechanism is disrupted.

At the same time, it is a mistake to rely only on the belt replacement intervals, which are prescribed in the vehicle’s operating manual. First of all, it is important to take into account the main factors influencing the rapid wear of the timing belt:

For example, if, when replacing a belt, the marks are set incorrectly, the gas distribution mechanism will not work synchronously, malfunctions in the operation of the power unit will begin, etc.

General algorithm for checking (setting) labels:

Let’s also add that on a Nexia car with a 16-valve internal combustion engine, the marks on the camshaft pulleys should face each other. One way or another, having studied the features of marking, you can move on to considering the actual replacement of the timing belt on the Nexia.

Replacing the timing belt Nexia 8 valves

Necessary tools and materials: timing belt, pump (if necessary), idler pulley, set of sockets and keys, special wrench “41” for tensioning the belt with the pump. The sequence of actions to be performed for replacing the timing belt with parallel replacement of the pump:

Replacing the timing belt Daewoo Nexia 16 valves

Necessary tools and materials: timing belt, pump (if necessary), idler pulley, set of sockets and wrenches (hexagon, 10 wrench, etc.), container for draining antifreeze.

Algorithm of work performed:

The result of correct replacement of the timing belt will be stable operation of the timing belt and the entire car engine as a whole. The driver also gains confidence that the timing belt will not jam or break. At the same time, it is important to understand that the rollers and pump must be changed along with the belt, even if there are no comments during a visual inspection, and the operation of these elements does not raise any complaints at the moment.

About the engine

This car model has won the hearts of many car enthusiasts not only in the regions of the Russian Federation, but also in many other CIS countries. In 2002, a power unit with a displacement of 1500 cm 3 began to be installed on the car, which replaced an engine with 8 valves in the cylinder head. The new engine already has 16 valves, which are driven by two camshafts. The Nexia engine with 16 valves is capable of developing a power of 85 horsepower.

An increase in the number of valves was required to improve the filling of the cylinders with the combustible mixture and the effective removal of exhaust gases from the working area. The use of an electronic engine control system and an injector in the power system made it possible to reduce fuel consumption and improve the dynamic performance of the car. The cylinder block, crankshaft, and pistons are used from the previous model. The cylinder head has received significant changes. The use of 16 valves required the installation of two camshafts.

Since 2008, Daewoo Nexia has been working with a more advanced engine, which has a displacement of 1600 cm 3, the power has increased to 109 horsepower. The cylinder head also has 16 valves, and the engine received an EGR valve. The poor quality of the fuel used often causes it to fail, so drivers get rid of this valve. This significantly reduces the environmental performance of the engine.

Do valves bend when broken?

Four valves per cylinder require consistency in the operation of the entire engine timing mechanism. When the valve train drive mechanism is working properly, there are no problems in the power unit. A broken timing belt damages almost all valves in the cylinder head. In addition, connecting rods, cylinder head guide bushings, and engine pistons may be damaged. Repairing the engine after this will require large material costs.

The designers tried to get rid of this problem; the pistons received recesses in the heads. After this, we did not get the desired effect; the valves are still damaged when the timing belt fails. To avoid such “troubles”. You should be careful when performing engine maintenance and use high-quality consumables.
