We have been waiting for this for a long time and finally it came to us, we meet the three-cylinder beast Daewoo Matiz, replacing the timing belt and roller. The engine capacity is 0.8 liters, the speedometer shows almost 40 thousand kilometers across the vast expanses of our vast homeland. Since the car had just been purchased, the owner decided to play it safe and that’s right, because no one can guarantee that what’s on the speedometer is the same as in real life.
Attention! When the timing belt on this engine breaks, all the valves bend.
Article number and cost of analogues of the original timing belt Daewoo Matiz
Since the original timing belt for Daewoo Matiz is expensive, car owners recommend purchasing analogues from third-party manufacturers. Since the performance and safety of the power unit depends on the reliability of the gas distribution mechanism drive, purchasing low-grade consumables is unacceptable. Therefore, products from trusted brands should be installed on the machine, the best of which are presented in the table below.

During operation of the Daewoo Matiz, the main elements of the gas distribution mechanism drive wear out. Many parts have a similar service life to the timing belt. Therefore, during repair work, it is recommended to replace all elements approaching the end of their service life. For the convenience of car owners, many companies produce special kits for servicing the timing drive. The best kits that Daewoo Matiz owners recommend using are presented in the table below.

Removing the old belt
The piston of the first cylinder is installed at TDC. Next, remove the oil level dipstick. After this, it is necessary to remove the drive belt from the pump in cars with power steering, if one is present (typical only for some trim levels). Now we can remove the drive belt associated with the generator.
Carefully unscrew the crankshaft pulley mounting bolt. It is important to remember that a screwdriver or other suitable object is used to secure the crankshaft from possible rotation. It is inserted into the appropriate place located in the rear of the clutch housing.
After this, we will need to remove the pulley and also unscrew the bolt with which it is secured. It holds the oil dipstick guide tube bracket. Now this very tube will need to be removed. This requires little effort, as you can overdo it and damage it.
Unscrew the 3 bolts that secure the lower timing case cover. As a result, we can dismantle the rear timing cover, allowing full access to the gas distribution mechanism.
Slightly unscrew the mounting bolt holding the tension roller so that you can later remove the timing belt. Rotate this tension roller in relation to the mounting bolt. Be prepared that this will be quite difficult to do due to the small resistance of the spring connected to it.
Hold the rollers and tighten the bolt thoroughly. After this, you can easily remove the belt, both from the toothed pulley and from the nearby tension roller. Just pull it a little towards you and lift it up. The old belt has been removed.

Regulations
It is necessary to periodically inspect the condition of the belt. If this is not done, the consumable may break. This is already a serious reason to overhaul the car. If the belt breaks, the valves will meet the pistons. Not only will they suffer from this, but also the cylinders. The manufacturer of Daewoo Matiz says that replacing the timing gear will become necessary after 60,000 km. Premature failure of the belt drive, however, cannot be ruled out either. The belt may wear out its service life ahead of schedule, and there may be several reasons for this. Not all of us always follow the driving rules and drive only at a certain speed. Extreme driving is the hobby of many, many modern drivers, but excessive loads on the engine will certainly cause premature belt wear. The weather conditions in which we operate the car also often leave much to be desired. This also does not have a positive effect on the condition of the belt. These and some other factors may cause the belt to be replaced before the time specified by the manufacturer.
Therefore, look under the hood of your car as often as possible to detect belt wear at an early stage.
But what signs can indicate that the belt drive has already exhausted its service life, and it is high time to change it:
- the structure of the belt began to crack, breaks and deep scratches appeared on it;
- the ends are damp;
- the fabric began to delaminate;
- the surface was covered with oil stains.
If these and some other defects are detected, the timing belt drive needs to be changed. If this is not done, then you will have to pay a considerable amount to repair your car.
Removing the buffer
Removing the facing part of the front buffer
Let's start small:
- first you need to disconnect the “ground” from the battery in order to prevent undesirable consequences during the work;
- lift the Matiz using a jack;
- dismantle the aprons (shields) that are located on the front wheel arches: unscrew the two fixing screws. This is necessary in order to get directly to the buffer itself;
- unscrew the two bolts that hold the cladding. You need to look for them on the side, in the arches.
- There are clips at the bottom under the bumper - they need to be unhooked;
- you can lower the car from the jack;
- unhook the trim by unscrewing the two bolts that are located near each headlight;
- remove the clips (4 pcs.), located between the two removed bolts and running along the bumper trim;
- dismantle the facing panel.
Before you begin removing the front facing part of the buffer, do not forget to disconnect the ground from the battery.
Why is it important to align the timing marks?
It is impossible to obtain full performance from the specified motor parameters without meeting certain conditions. One of them is the correct installation of valve timing. For this purpose, there are installation marks in the timing mechanism drive. Without them, it is impossible to correctly set the position of the camshaft relative to the crankshaft. If the position of the gear is shifted even by one tooth, the engine operating parameters will be greatly impaired. The ignition will be set early or late. This will affect not only the parameters of the motor, but also its technical condition. Carrying out the operation of installing the marks of the timing drive mechanism is not a difficult operation, but it requires care when performing it. You can read more about the belt replacement procedure in this article.
Camshaft marks
This part in the cylinder head is responsible for opening and closing valves in the intake and exhaust channels. Only complete filling of the cylinders with the air-fuel mixture and subsequent removal of exhaust gases will ensure that the specified engine parameters are obtained. The camshaft is driven by a pulley, which is driven by the rotation of a toothed belt. The correct installation of the pulley on the camshaft is ensured by a pin that will not allow it to rotate arbitrarily relative to the shaft.
In order for the cams to open or close the valves at the right time, installation marks are applied to the timing mechanism drive. The upper inner part of the protective roof has an arrow on the body, obtained by stamping during its manufacture. The camshaft pulley also has a mark, which is a mark on one of the teeth. The pulley should be rotated until the mark and the arrow are directed exactly opposite each other. After this, you can continue working further. The mark is installed with the belt removed, otherwise the motor can be damaged. In this case, you should carefully inspect the shaft seal; if engine oil leaks through the seal, it should be replaced with a new product.
About the engine
This “baby” is equipped with a gasoline engine with three cylinders; it has a working volume of only 800 cm3. Later, a liter power unit began to be installed on this car. The cylinder block is cast from cast iron, the cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy. The operation of each cylinder is ensured by two valves. One each on the inlet and outlet channels. The engine power is 52 horsepower, which is more than enough for a small car. The camshaft is located in the upper part of the cylinder head and is driven by a toothed belt drive.
About the car
The power unit for this car model was developed by engineers of the Japanese company Suzuki, which is intended for small class cars. Its working volume is only about 800 cm 3, the developed power is 52 hp. In the process of modernizing the engine for Matiz, it received an injector in the power system and an electronic control unit. The engine has three working cylinders, the camshaft is installed in the cylinder head. It drives 6 valves, two for each cylinder.
A toothed belt is used to drive the timing mechanism. The engine cylinder block is cast from cast iron, the cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy. The toothed belt transmits rotation from the crankshaft not only to the camshaft, but also rotates the pump in the engine cooling system. The load on the belt is large, so you should carefully carry out all routine maintenance on the power unit prescribed by the manufacturer. Most owners perform this maintenance themselves.
Are the valves bending?
Owners of cars that have a timing chain in their drive are not interested in this issue. The use of a timing belt in transmission makes this issue relevant. To improve engine efficiency, designers increase the compression ratio in the working cylinders. This design solution entails a reduction in the volume of the combustion chamber. Therefore, if the timing marks are installed incorrectly or if the timing belt breaks, a “meeting” of the pistons and valves may occur.
This fully applies to the Daewoo Matiz engine. When the belt breaks or its teeth are cut, the valves bend. The piston and valve guides may also be damaged, and in some cases the connecting rods may be bent. Such a problem will require additional material and time costs to eliminate. To prevent this from happening to the engine, you should check the condition of the timing drive parts and promptly replace worn parts with new spare parts.
