Removal
60. Drain the coolant from the engine cooling system (see Chapter 3) and remove the engine oil pan (see Section 12).
61. Remove the multi-rib belt and multi-rib belt tensioner pulley (see Section 7).
62. Remove the generator by disconnecting the electrical wiring lines and unscrewing the mounting bolts (see accompanying illustration). (See also Chapter 5).
63. Disconnect the cooling system pipe from the thermostat housing and remove the thermostat (see Chapter 3). Disconnect the pipe from the water pump and the electrical connector from the oil pressure sensor (see accompanying illustration.
64. Disconnect all indicated on the connector. illustrations of connectors, channels and pipes.
65. Remove the water pump pulley and remove the water pump (see Chapter 3). Make sure the two guide bushings remain in place.
Attention: The water pump mounting bolts are of different lengths - mark the locations of the three short bolts!
66. Set the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC position (see Section 6) after checking the position of the camshafts, remove tools KM-953 and KM-954.
67. Remove the crankshaft pulley by unscrewing 6 bolts, holding the shaft from turning by the head of the central bolt.
68. Loosen the central bolt securing the crankshaft mounting flange, for which install a special device (see accompanying illustration) to hold the shaft from turning.
Note: Use an assistant when performing this operation. The KM-952 device must be removed from the installation hole.
69. Reinstall the KM-952 device, completely unscrew the central bolt and remove the mounting flange.
70. Unscrew the 15 mounting bolts (see accompanying illustration) and remove the timing cover.
71. Pull and fix the chain tensioner using the KM-355-1 device (see accompanying illustration). Remove the guides (in turn - (3), (5), (7)) and remove the chain from the crankshaft drive sprocket. Remove the timing cover gasket. Clean the mating surfaces.
72. Carefully remove the crankshaft front oil seal from the timing cover seat using a suitable tool - do not damage the seating surfaces.
Note: The oil seal must be replaced every time the timing chain is replaced/removed.
Installation
73. Lubricate the outer surfaces of the new oil seal with silicone grease (white) and install the oil seal using the KM-960 tool (see accompanying illustration) into the seat of the timing cover.
74. Remove the remains of the old one from the timing cover and install a new water pump gasket on the cleaned surface - make sure that the guide bushings are installed correctly (see accompanying illustration). Install the water pump onto the drive cover using 3 short bolts.
75. Remove the elastomeric gaskets (see accompanying illustration) at the joints of the cylinder head and the cylinder block and replace them with new ones, having previously lubricated them with silicone sealant (gray), applying a strip of sealant approximately 2 mm thick. In the absence of elastomeric gaskets, the joints of the mating surfaces can be filled with sealant without installing gaskets.
Attention: Installation of the timing cover must be completed within 10 minutes after applying the sealant!
76. Install a new timing cover gasket on the engine - make sure that the guide bushings are installed correctly (see illustration 8.74).
77. Install the crankshaft drive sprocket onto the shaft and install the timing chain onto it onto the camshaft sprockets - the pull (right) branch of the chain should be tensioned. Install the guides in the reverse order to how they were removed (see paragraph 71).
78. Install the timing cover and tighten alternately, in accordance with the resistance indicated. Numbered illustrations, mounting bolts.
79. Remove the adjusting devices KM-952 and KM-953 from the engine. Using special tools (see above), install the crankshaft mounting flange - the installation mark (see illustration 8.68) should be at the top.
80. Check and adjust the valve timing (see Section 6) and reinstall the remaining components that were removed in the reverse order of their removal. Pour oil into the lubrication system and coolant into the engine cooling system, check the systems for leaks.
Engine and timing Opel Astra N
The Opel Astra N car was produced from 2004 to 2015, and since 2006 there was a restyle version. Over this fairly long period, the car was equipped with various power units:
- 1.4 l Z14XEP (90hp);
- 1.6 l Z16XER (115hp);

- 2.0 l Z20LER (200 hp);

The main purpose of the timing belt/chain is to drive the gas distribution mechanism, while it ensures coordinated opening/closing of the valves depending on the current stroke of the operating cycle in each of the engine cylinders. In addition, on various engine models, some auxiliary units are driven by a toothed belt/chain, such as fuel injection pump (diesel models), water pump, and on some engines, oil pump. Before removing the belt, it is recommended to draw a diagram of its tension. The sequence of operations for removing and installing the timing belt is almost the same for most engines; the differences are determined by the design features of the engines. If some belt replacement operations are not fully described, they are usually not particularly difficult and require only minimal plumbing knowledge - refer to the description of the belt replacement procedure on the Z16XEP engine.
It is recommended to replace the belt each time it is removed from the engine. If you plan to reuse the belt, before removing it from the pulleys, make a mark (in the form of an arrow) with a marker to determine the direction of rotation during subsequent installation.
Note: The belt rotates clockwise when looking at the engine from the belt drive side.
The chain drive (models Z14XEP, Z22YH, Z13DTH) complicates the procedure for adjusting the valve timing and it differs significantly from the same procedure with a timing belt. In this case, contact the company’s service station or purchase a special tool from official Opel representatives.
During operation, as a result of weakening of the belt/chain, increase in length, or in case of some damage to the belt, he/she may jump one or more teeth on the camshaft gears/sprockets, which will lead to a violation of the valve timing coordination, a decrease in engine efficiency, and in some cases, to failure of valves or cylinder pistons. The valve timing is adjusted with the timing belt/chain removed by aligning the marks on the camshaft pulleys and the engine crankshaft when setting the TDC position for the corresponding piston (see Section 6).
Attention: When turning the camshafts with the timing belt/chain removed, none of the pistons should be in the TDC position - otherwise the valves will rest against the piston, which can lead to damage to the valves and/or pistons. It is necessary to turn the engine crankshaft approximately 60° from the TDC position! The crankshaft does not need to be turned if only a slight displacement of the camshafts is required.
Note: After replacing the timing belt, it is recommended to stick a label on the top timing belt cover indicating the current mileage and date of replacement.

Step-by-step instruction
First, disconnect the air filter with pipes from the throttle valve.
We remove the front right wheel, the side plastic protection and jack up the engine through a plank. We remove the generator belt, using a nineteen key, using a special protrusion, turn the tension roller, thereby loosening the belt. In the photo it has already been removed.
Remove the engine mount.
We dismantle the support.
Remove the upper protective cover of the timing belt.
Remove the middle part of the plastic protection.
Set the top dead center
We turn the crankshaft by the bolt, always clockwise, until the marks on the crankshaft pulley and the lower protection coincide.
It's not very visible, but it won't be difficult to find them.
The marks on the top of the camshaft couplings should also match.
Unscrew the crankshaft pulley bolt. If the transmission is manual, then this procedure will not pose any special problems. We place stops under the wheels, turn on the fifth wheel, insert a specially trained screwdriver into the brake disc under the caliper and, with a slight movement of the hand, unscrew the bolt. But if the robot is like in our case, then a wrench helps us, but if there is no current one, we make a crankshaft pulley clamp. In the corner we drill two holes by eight and insert two bolts there, tightening them with nuts; we eventually insert these bolts into the holes in the pulley. You will get the dimensions yourself by measuring the distance between the holes. In the photo, the lock is shown schematically with a red rectangle; any holes can be used.
Remove the pulley and lower timing belt protection. On the left we see a tension roller, on the right a bypass roller.
We check the camshaft marks and, if they are gone, we bring them down. The marks on the crankshaft sprockets, in turn, should also match.
We install our Russian clamp on the camshafts and mark the old belt, just in case.

- Remove the crankshaft pulley by unscrewing its bolt.
You need to know this! The crankshaft pulley bolt is tightened with a large torque. To prevent the crankshaft from turning while removing the fastening, it is necessary for a second person, while in the cabin, to engage 5th gear and press the brake.
- Remove the accessory belt tensioner roller.
- Remove the lower timing cover.
- Unscrew, but not completely, the fastening of the intermediate roller.
- To remove the tension of the timing belt with key “A”, you need to completely rotate the roller in a clockwise direction (you will feel resistance from the spring) and, without removing the key, remove the bolt and dismantle the intermediate roller.
- Remove the timing belt from the crankshaft pulley and remove it from the system.
- Remove the tension roller by unscrewing the fastener that holds it and replace the part.
You need to know this! During the work, you need to change the tensioning and intermediate timing rollers - the service life of these parts is not much longer than the period of use of the belt, and in order to change them after, you will have to repeat all the steps to disassemble the car again, which will take a lot of effort and time.

Finally, an old friend of mine exchanged his rusty bucket for a normal car and immediately came to our sales post. So, we have an Opel Astra H 1.6 Z16XER replacing the timing belt, rollers, oil and filters.
Since this is an Opel, in addition to regular keys, we will also need Torx sockets, but they have long been in every tool kit. We will also make a clamp for variable valve timing clutches from an eight bolt and two washers. If this method seems unreliable to someone, you can buy clamps in any online store for only 950 rubles. Let’s make a reservation right away that if the car is equipped with a manual transmission, then there will be no difficulties, but if it’s a robot, then you will have to either make a crankshaft clamp or use a pneumatic impact wrench. We do not change the pump since it is driven by the alternator belt. It took an hour and a half and one mug of tea to replace the timing belt.

Under the hood is a 1.6-liter engine called Z16XER.
First, disconnect the air filter with pipes from the throttle valve.
We remove the front right wheel, the side plastic protection and jack up the engine through a plank. We remove the generator belt, using a nineteen key, using a special protrusion, turn the tension roller, thereby loosening the belt. In the photo it has already been removed.

Set the top dead center. We turn the crankshaft by the bolt, always clockwise, until the marks on the crankshaft pulley and the lower protection coincide. It's not very visible, but it won't be difficult to find them.

Unscrew the crankshaft pulley bolt. If the transmission is manual, then this procedure will not pose any special problems. We place stops under the wheels, turn on the fifth wheel, insert a specially trained screwdriver into the brake disc under the caliper and, with a slight movement of the hand, unscrew the bolt. But if the robot is like in our case, then a wrench helps us, but if there is no current one, we make a crankshaft pulley clamp. In the corner we drill two holes by eight and insert two bolts there, tightening them with nuts; we eventually insert these bolts into the holes in the pulley. You will get the dimensions yourself by measuring the distance between the holes. In the photo, the lock is shown schematically with a red rectangle; any holes can be used.

We check the camshaft marks and, if they are gone, we bring them down. The marks on the crankshaft sprockets, in turn, should also match.
We install our Russian clamp on the camshafts and mark the old belt, just in case.

Using a hexagon, we turn the timing belt tension roller counterclockwise, thereby loosening the belt and removing the belt and rollers.
Let's start the installation.
We put the new rollers in place, and the tension roller has a protrusion on the body that should fit into the groove during installation.
We check all the marks again and install a new timing belt, first on the crankshaft sprocket, idler pulley, camshafts and pulling the tension roller onto it. Do not forget about the direction of rotation indicated on the belt. We remove our clamp.
We check the marks and, having replaced the lower protective cover and the crankshaft pulley, turn the engine two turns and check all the marks again. If everything matches, install all the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal. In principle, there is nothing complicated here, the main thing is to be attentive.

44. Perform the operations described in paragraphs 45-49, Section 6. After removing the air cleaner, remove the multi-rib belt (see Section 7).

Installation
52. Install the toothed belt, observing the direction of rotation, on the drive gears in the order of priority indicated by the arrow (see accompanying illustration). Note: The fuel injection pump and timing drive wheels must be secured with bolts, the marks on the crankshaft mounting flange and the oil pump housing must match.
53. Loosen the tension roller mounting bolt and release the roller - the belt will tighten. Unscrew the adjusting bolts of the injection pump and timing gears.
54. Turn the crankshaft 60° against the direction of shaft rotation (counterclockwise) (see illustration 8.52) and tighten the tension roller mounting bolt to the required torque.
55. Smoothly turn the crankshaft 2 full turns clockwise and set the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC position - the marks on the crankshaft flange and the oil pump housing should coincide. Screw the adjusting bolts into the fuel injection pump and timing belt drive pulleys - if at least one of the bolts does not screw in (the holes on the pulley and the engine housing do not match), reinstall the toothed belt.
56. Installation of removed and disconnected components is carried out in the reverse order of dismantling. When installing the crankshaft pulley, it is necessary to align the axis of the mounting flange with the hole in the pulley (see accompanying illustration); do not forget to replace the pulley mounting bolts. Tighten all fasteners to the required torque (see Specifications). Upon completion of work, check the coolant level and, if necessary, make appropriate adjustments.
In what cases is replacement necessary?
The gas distribution mechanism is one of the most important components of a car. Thanks to it, the fuel-air mixture and air are supplied to the cylinders and exhaust gases are removed. This operation is carried out by timely opening and closing of valves. The camshaft ensures the functioning of the timing belt. There are cams on the shaft, thanks to which the valve timing is determined, that is, the valves open and close. Each engine has its own cylinder firing order.
The camshaft works thanks to a drive that connects it to the crankshaft. The crankshaft makes two revolutions, but the camshaft makes only one full revolution during this time. Thus, during one cycle the valve opens only once. The Opel Astra uses a belt as a drive. It ensures synchronous operation of the shafts, so the quality of the gas distribution mechanism depends on its condition.
The Opel Astra timing belt is a closed rubber ring, on the inside of which there are teeth necessary for better adhesion to the shaft gears. In addition to synchronizing the shafts, the belt serves as a drive for the oil pump and pump, and therefore experiences double load. This leads to increased wear of the product and reduced service life. Therefore, it is important to monitor his condition. Over time, the belt drive can weaken, causing the vehicle to lose power.
If replacement is not carried out in time, this may lead to belt breakage. When the belt drive breaks, the valves meet the pistons, as a result, the valves bend, the pistons are damaged, and the surface of the cylinders is often scratched. All this leads to expensive repairs or replacement of the engine.

Removal
1. Set the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke (see Section 6) - check the valve timing.
2. Remove the multi-rib belt (see Section 7).
3. Remove the right engine boot and disconnect the crankshaft pulley (see Section 5).
4. Remove the multi-rib belt tensioner by unscrewing the bolt securing it to the engine block when the device is in the pinned position.
5. Remove the lower cover of the toothed belt drive (see accompanying illustration) by unscrewing the fastening bolts.
6. Reset the TDC position for the piston of the first cylinder of the engine. check the alignment of all marks (see illustration 8.6, I and III) and fix the position of the camshafts using special tools (see illustration 8.6, I and II).

7. If the timing belt will be reused, do not forget to mark the direction of its rotation before removing it. Remove the belt, being careful not to damage it when threading it through the engine mount. A belt that has characteristic signs of wear, kinks and damage must be replaced without fail.
8. If, when checking the valve timing adjustment, the marks on the gear wheels of the distribution mechanism do not coincide, it is necessary, after removing the belt, to align the marks by turning the camshafts accordingly, and secure the shafts from turning using devices (see illustration 8.6, I and II).
Installation
9. Before installing the timing belt, you must insert it into a special mounting device, which is included in the delivery package along with the belt (see accompanying illustration). It protects the belt from bending when passing it through the engine mount.
Attention: Kinking can lead to belt breakage during operation and cause severe engine damage!
10. Remove the device and install the timing belt on the pulleys in the following sequence: exhaust camshaft gear, intake camshaft gear, tension and guide rollers, crankshaft pulley.
11. Remove the clamp from the tension roller - the toothed belt is tensioned automatically.
12. Unlock the flywheel, if it remains locked after installing the crankshaft pulley (see Section 5), rotate the crankshaft 2 turns in the direction of engine rotation (clockwise) and again set the TDC position for the piston of the first cylinder. Check the valve timing; if necessary, remove and reinstall the timing belt.
13. Installation of all other removed components is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
Do-it-yourself Opel Astra H timing belt replacement
This is a labor-intensive process, but you can replace the Astra timing drive with your own hands.
- Before replacement work, you need to remove the negative terminal from the battery.
- Next, the wheel on the passenger side and the fender liner are dismantled.
- Then the crankcase protection is removed and the engine is jacked up. It is worth placing boards or other wooden spacers so as not to damage the Astra's power unit.
- The engine support is removed from the belt side.
- Next, the tension roller is loosened by pressing the tensioner against the clock, and then dismantled. For convenience, it is worth removing the generator with tensioner.
- Then the timing case is removed.

- The bolt holding the tensioner is loosened, and only then the belt itself is removed.
- The tensioners, rollers, if any, the pump are dismantled and replaced with new ones.
- Before installing a new belt, all Opel Astra timing marks must be in place.
- You need to start tightening the new one from the crankshaft gear. Then pull it behind the pump (if there is one) and behind the tension roller. Then put it on the right camshaft, then on the left.
- Having loosened the tensioner, it is rotated so that its marks and the marks of the bracket coincide.
- Then the tension roller fasteners are tightened. After this, you need to turn the crankshaft 2-3 turns and check the timing marks of the Opel Astra. If everything matches, then you can unlock the camshafts.
- Installation of the remaining parts is carried out in the reverse order.

- Using a special device, you need to secure the flywheel from turning and unscrew the fastening bolt. If the bolt does not break off immediately, you can put the car in fifth gear and press the brake pedal. If there is no assistant, you can insert a board or pipe between the pedal and the driver's seat.
- After unscrewing the mounting bolt, you need to remove the crankshaft pulley and the protective cover under it. We temporarily screw the bolt into its original place.
- Next, turning the crankshaft clockwise, you need to set the engine to TDC. To do this, it is necessary to correctly set the installation marks on the camshafts. They must look at each other. In addition, the marks on the crankshaft must match.
