Removal: 1) Starting with “The battery is a rechargeable battery,” unscrew the nut that holds the “-” terminal on the battery and then remove the terminal.

Ignition switch device VAZ 2109

ZZ is found in old and new designs. The old one has 4 positions, a long key and a relay. The new one does not have a relay, it has 3 positions and a short key.

The ignition switch of the VAZ 21099, like other models, performs two functions:

  • mechanical – locks the steering wheel without a key;
  • electrical - closes contacts depending on the position of the key.

Purpose and device

The main purpose of the lock at first was to protect the car from theft, but:

  • Now, as can be seen from practice, in order to start and steal a car, car thieves do not necessarily need to have a key, or a duplicate of it.

Typical faults

Since the ignition switch on the VAZ 2109 performs two functions, the nature of the faults can be divided into mechanical and electrical, although most often the lock breaks down in starter mode:

  1. A mechanical malfunction includes jamming of the core in any position: it is physically impossible to turn the key. In this case, you can inject a little silicone lubricant inside. If this does not help, you will have to remove the ignition switch and replace it with a new one.
  2. Electrical faults can occur at a certain position of the key when the integrity of the electrical network in the switch is broken. If there is no contact, all system components will not work. If there is contact, but the circuit does not occur where it is needed, this is fraught with a short circuit and overheating of the circuit breaker. Based on price considerations, replacing one contact group is less expensive:

  • All our actions are repeated in principle, as in the case described above with removing the lock, you will have to remove the casing, and so on
  • To avoid the widespread problem associated with mixing up contacts, it is recommended to number them before disconnecting (or mark them in some other way)
  • This measure will save your nerves and time.
  • Some models of locks have a locking ring in their contact group, and here we need an awl to pull it out
  • It’s important not to forget to stick it in place later
  • Then everything is put back together and screwed to the control column

The ignition switch in cars of the VAZ family fails from time to time due to weakening of the contact posts or burning of the contacts inside it. It also happens that the cams of a plastic roller are produced. You can disassemble the lock and clean it, but it’s better to just replace it with a new one, considering that it costs pennies compared to imported locks.

But if connecting the wires together did not result in the starter operating (or it did not turn on the first time), check the solenoid relay on the starter. The contact spots on it may also burn out, which will prevent the circuit from closing normally. Alternatively, you can use a screwdriver to short-circuit the two large terminals on the solenoid relay (before doing this, put the car in neutral and use the handbrake). When closed, the starter should begin to spin vigorously. If this happens, remove and change the solenoid relay. If the starter rotates “sluggishly” when it closes, you will have to remove it and check the condition of the brushes.

All operations are performed with your own hands, without the help of car service specialists. Moreover, the price of an ignition switch on a VAZ2106 is up to 100 rubles. The ignition switch is designed not only to start the engine - it performs several functions at once:

  1. supplies voltage to the vehicle’s on-board network, closing the circuits of the ignition system, lighting, sound alarm, additional devices and instruments;
  2. at the driver’s command, turns on the starter to start the power plant and turns it off;
  3. turns off the power to the on-board circuit, preserving the battery charge;
  4. protects the car from theft by fixing the steering shaft.

Repair and replacement instructions

Basically, the protection zone can be repaired. Repair usually consists of replacing the core or contact group. If the problem remains after repair, then the ignition switch needs to be replaced.


Core of ZZ VAZ 2109

On a VAZ 2109, replacing the core consists of the following steps:

  1. First, the protective and decorative cover is removed from the steering column, as well as the windshield washer and turn switches.
  2. The lock is secured with screws and a hook latch. There may be problems with unscrewing the screws, since their heads are cut off. To remove them, you first need to loosen them with chisels and then unscrew them with pliers. You can carefully drill out the screws.
  3. Next, we disconnect the clamps, disengaging them.
  4. By pulling out the side pin, you can remove the core. If that doesn’t work, the core can be drilled out using a thin drill. In extreme cases, you will have to dismantle the entire assembly.
  5. The next step is to disconnect the connector, wire plug, and ground wire.
  6. By releasing the latch, you can remove the cover and contact group.
  7. We insert a new core and check the work. When you turn the key, all processes should work.

The steering wheel lock should also be checked. If the steering wheel does not lock when turned fully, you need to adjust the position of the lock on the column.

Replacing the contact group of the VAZ ignition switch comes down to dismantling the ignition switch: the removal diagram is described above.

When performing the procedure, the following recommendations should be followed:

  • before disconnecting contacts, it is advisable to assign numbers to them, this will help to avoid errors when connecting;
  • If there is a retaining ring in the design of the contact group, you must first remove it using an awl.

The ignition switch on these cars is located to the left of the steering column. It is fixed directly to it using two fixing bolts. The entire mechanism of the device, except for the upper part in which the keyhole is located, is hidden by a plastic casing.

On the visible part of the ignition switch housing, special marks are applied in a certain order, allowing inexperienced drivers to navigate the lock activation mode when the key is in the hole:

  • “ ” – a mark indicating that all systems, devices and instruments that are turned on using the lock are turned off (this does not include the cigarette lighter, interior lighting, brake light, and in some cases the radio);
  • I ” is a mark informing that the vehicle’s on-board network is powered from the battery. In this position, the key is fixed independently, and electricity is supplied to the ignition system, to the electric motors of the heater and windshield washer, instrumentation, headlights and light signaling;
  • II ” – engine start mark. It indicates that voltage is applied to the starter. The key does not lock in this position. If you release it, it will return to the "I" position. This is done so as not to subject the starter to unnecessary loads;
  • III ” – parking mark. If you remove the key from the ignition in this position, the steering column will be locked with a latch. It can only be unlocked by inserting the key back and turning it to position “0” or “I”.

Replacing the lock cylinder itself or the contact group

Replacing the VAZ 2109 lock cylinders requires the following tools:

In case of any breakdown, it is not necessary to completely replace the lock; if the cause of the malfunction lies in replaceable parts, then a partial repair of the lock is carried out and replacing the lock cylinders on the VAZ 2109 makes sense when the key stops spinning freely in the keyhole. Another option for partial repair is to replace the contact group; this requires a minimum of tools and little understanding of the device.

  • If it is more convenient for you to pull it out first, pull out the ignition switch, before you start replacing the cylinder, to do this you need to unscrew the bolts securing the ignition switch to the control column
  • This must be done using a hammer and chisel because these bolts have sheared heads.
  • You need to loosen them a little with a chisel, and then unscrew them with pliers, as in the photo below

  • Now we remove the bracket and the lock itself from the column, and be sure to disconnect its electronic connector
  • We unscrew the screw securing the ignition relay and remove it from under the panel
  • Disconnect the connector
  • Disconnect the “mass” wire
  • Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the screw
  • Then release the latch and remove the cover, then the contact group
  • So we pulled the switch
  • We remove the cylinder with our own hands and the ignition switch, as already described above
  • We are replacing it
  • We check the operation of the lock with the newest cylinder installed, to do this we turn the ignition key
  • After installation, do not forget to check the correct operation of the locking mechanism, our control shaft
  • When the mechanism does not work when the control steering wheel is turned at full speed, you need to adjust the placement of the lock on the control column
  • Only after adjusting the location and checking the functionality of our locking mechanism, you can tighten the bolts until the heads come off one hundred percent, use a “10” spanner for this purpose.

Even in Grants, produced since 2012, the additional ignition circuit did not appear. In general, with the transition to the “Ten” family, three “significant” terminals of the lock remained:

  • Contact "30";
  • Terminal “15” (can be designated as “15/1”);
  • Terminal "50".

REPLACING THE IGNITION SWITCH OF A VAZ 2109

The Tens connector has 8 terminals. And in “Priora”, as well as in “Granta” and “Kalina” this number is reduced to three

Of the 8 terminals available in the VAZ-2110 connector, the 7th and 8th simply duplicate each other. Two more are connected to the button, and another pair of terminals are connected to the lamp.

The lock connector of all VAZ models, starting from “2170”, is equipped with only three contact terminals. And the additional connector, which is equipped with a pair of terminals, is connected to the immobilizer in these cars.

The “3” mark has disappeared from the “Tens” lock cylinder. And until now, VAZ produces just such locks, where the key can be installed in one of the following positions:

The lock mechanism is connected to many wires. They continue from the battery, connecting all the electrical devices of the car into a single chain. When you turn the ignition key, the electrical circuit is closed from the “-” terminal of the battery to the ignition coil. As a result, the current passes through the wires to the ignition switch, through its contacts it is directed to the induction coil, after which it returns back to the “+” terminal. As electricity passes through the coil, it generates high voltage, which it transmits to the spark plug. Therefore, the key closes the contacts of the ignition circuit, thereby starting the car engine.

Testing the serviceability

The lock's service life is limited. After it fails, it is necessary to repair or completely replace the product. The functionality is checked after inserting the key into the “secret”.

Failures occur due to mechanical wear or loss of contact. The check is carried out by turning the key. If it begins to jam, then as a temporary solution it is possible to use silicone grease by dripping it inside.

In order for the wiring diagram to function correctly, you need to know which contacts to connect to each other. Typically the following wiring system is used:

  • red connects to the cable from the starter;
  • the pink wire goes to “+” from the 12 V battery;
  • brown +12 V is used to start the ignition relay;
  • white – relay on;
  • black and blue connect other consumers.

It is necessary to check the contacts for the presence of carbon deposits or the possibility of oxidation. Burning contacts can be heard in the cabin by the characteristic smell of burnt insulation.

Voltage is supplied to the electrical power circuits of consumers of electrical equipment of VAZ 2108, 21081, 21083, 2109, 21091, 21093, 21099 vehicles through the ignition switch (lock).

For current unloading of the ignition switch contacts, an ignition relay 113.4737-10 is included in its circuit, which is mounted next to it under the instrument panel.

Ignition key position: “O” (off)

The lock contacts “30” (pink wire – “plus” from the generator) and “30/1” (brown wire – “plus” from the generator) are energized. No electric current flows into the system.

Key position: “I” (ignition)

Contacts “30” (pink wire) and INT (black wire) are closed. Voltage is supplied through one black wire to the exterior lighting switch, instrument lighting switch, through the other to the steering column switch for briefly turning on the high beam headlights.

Contacts “30/1” (brown “positive” wire) and 15/2 (blue wire) are closed. Voltage is supplied to the generator excitation winding, the ignition system, to the windshield wiper, carburetor solenoid valve control unit, turn indicators, reversing lamps, and control devices.

Contacts “30” (pink “positive” wire) and “15/2” (blue wire) are closed. The low and high beam headlights, fog lights, headlight cleaners, rear window cleaner, heated rear window, washer, heater fan, and engine cooling fan on the radiator are turned on.

Key position “II” (starter)

Contacts “30” (pink wire) and “50” (red wire to the starter) are closed.

In addition, “30” and “INT” remain closed, as well as 30/1 (brown wire) and “15/1” (white wire on the ignition relay).

Key position “III” (parking)

“30” and “INT”, “30/1” and “P” are closed (on VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars this contact was used to turn on the parking light, the wire is yellow).

Notes and additions

— They are not powered through the ignition switch: emergency, sound, light alarms, interior lighting, dimensions, brake lights. security alarm. electric door locks (if equipped).

  3. Then unscrew the two screws securing the ignition switch to the bracket.
  4. We insert the key and set it to position 0 to disable the anti-theft device.
  5. Insert the awl into the hole in the bracket and press the latch. Then we take out the lock itself.
  6. After removal, it is recommended to mark the contact wires so that nothing is mixed up the next time you connect.

Repair and replacement

Typically, the lock can be repaired. If this fails, you will have to completely replace it (see Replacing the VAZ ignition switch on your own). Repairing a lock in most cases comes down to replacing the cylinder or contact group. If after this the problem has not been resolved or it is possible to change the entire lock, then it is better to do the latter.

Larva and its replacement

So, we do the following:

  • Remove the steering column cover and unscrew the fastening bolts that tighten the ignition switch clamp.

Note. The bolts have sheared heads and then you will have to use a hammer and chisel. The bolts are first loosened by blows with a chisel, and then unscrewed with pliers.

  • We separate the two parts of the clamp so that they disengage;
  • The larva can be changed already at this stage of the operation;
  • We take out the side pin that holds the cylinder in the lock.

Advice. The cylinder can be easily removed with a thin screwdriver, for example, from a watch. At the same time, you need to tap the lock with a hammer.

  • If you cannot pull out the cylinder after the side pin has been removed, you can try to drill out the cylinder using a thin drill;
  • If again it was not possible to remove the cylinder, then it is recommended to finally remove the lock;
  • Remove the wire plugs.

Note. One of the plugs (the one with the larger connector) is located under the dashboard. To remove it, you need to put your hand under the panel.

  • If the ignition switch has a relay, then take it out from under the panel;
  • Disconnect the connector;
  • We also remove the ground wire;
  • Remove the cover by pressing the latch, and then the contact group;
  • Now it will be much easier to remove the larva;
  • We replace it with a new one;
  • We check the work on site before putting everything back into place. We turn the key inside the lock - all the processes described above should work.

Note. Don't forget to also check that the steering wheel lock works. If the steering shaft does not lock when the steering wheel is turned completely, we adjust the correct location of the lock on the column.

  • After a thorough check, making sure that everything works correctly, tighten the bolts until the heads come off. It is advisable to use the key at “10”.
