Preparatory work
— We install the car on a pit or overpass
If there is neither one nor the other, you can simply place the car on a flat surface, jack it up on both sides and remove the wheel.
— Disconnect the stabilizer bar from the suspension arm
It is most convenient to replace the silent block of the front suspension arm with the arm completely removed. But, below we will describe a replacement method directly on the car. It allows work to be completed in an extremely short time (since there are fewer parts to disconnect) without loss of quality.

— Disconnect the front suspension arm from the bracket
The lever silent block is attached to a bracket on the car body. Using two “19” wrenches, unscrew the fastening nut and knock out the bolt through the mandrel with a hammer.
At this stage, problems may arise with removing the bolt from the bushing of the silent block, since most often it sours there. There are several ways to solve the problem: heating, filling with penetrating liquid and cutting off the bolt with a grinder. We use the one that is most appropriate depending on the situation (degree of souring).
— Pressing out the old silent block
The silent block can be pressed out of the lever eye using a puller or a vice with pieces of tubes of suitable diameter.

— Press in a new silent block
For pressing, we again use a puller or a vice. Before pressing, lubricate the silent block with a soap solution.
After replacing the silent block, we install all the parts back. The final tightening of the bolt and nut securing the silent block is carried out while the car is on its wheels.
Notes and additions
The silent block of the front suspension arm of the VAZ 21083 car consists of a rubber bushing into which a steel tube is pressed. The silent block itself is pressed into the lever head. When the lever swings, elastic deformation of the rubber bushing occurs. Rotation of the silent block bushings relative to each other or relative to the lever head or mounting bolt is considered a malfunction.

Features of choosing silent blocks
To carry out the work, you first need to buy new elements. For VAZ-2109, you should select hinges according to the catalog number (2109-08-054). When purchasing, it is important not to confuse them with the hinges for the 2110 model, since the size of the silent block of the rear suspension of the VAZ-2109 is different (they are slightly smaller in diameter). Although it is quite possible to install a “tenth” element, pressing it in will be somewhat more difficult.

As for the front end, you can purchase assembled VAZ-2109 front suspension arms (with silent blocks) and install them. But this is not economically feasible, since levers are much more expensive than rubber elements. And although replacing silent blocks is a more labor-intensive operation compared to replacing a lever, repairs will cost many times less.
rubber silent blocks and polyurethane
As for the choice of hinges based on the elastic material used, VAZ silent blocks can be purchased in both rubber and polyurethane. The latter have a longer service life, but they are tougher and more expensive. But in general, the car owner himself will have to decide which elements to purchase.
Replacing rubber joints on the rear suspension
More on how things are changing. First, let's look at how to replace the rear silent blocks of a VAZ-2109. To perform the operation you will need:
- Inspection hole;
- Jacks;
- Tools (key sets, hammer, attachments);
- Bench vice;
- Mount;
- Spring ties;
- Soap solution;
- Pullers for rubber joints;
First, the silent blocks of the rear beam of the VAZ-2109 are replaced. For this:
- We put the car in a pit, jack up the rear on one side, remove the wheel;
- Unscrew the nut of the bolt securing the beam to the body, remove the bolt;
- Using a pry bar, we press the beam down to remove it from the bracket, fix it in this position (by installing a wooden spacer between the beam and the body);
- Using a hammer, carefully knock out the worn hinge;
- Using a device (a long bolt with a nut, two wide washers and a piece of pipe), we press in a new element, having previously generously lubricated the seat and the hinge itself with soapy water;
- We install the beam into the bracket and fix it with a fastening bolt;

What is a puller for installing silent blocks?
This is what a RMSH puller looks like, which you can make yourself. In order to make it yourself, at home, you will need the following materials and tools:
- Bolt with nut. The diameter and pitch of the thread are at your discretion. If the thread is small, you will have to turn it longer, but it will work easier and smoother.
- We select a cylinder with a diameter such that the silent block fits into it.
- Washers. Some. One washer should tightly cover the cylinder hole. You can even weld the washer on one side. We take the remaining washers with a smaller diameter than the diameter of the silent block.
A RC puller is needed not only for removal, but also for installation, so as not to damage the new silent blocks. And when removing with a puller, there is no need to hit with a hammer and there is no risk of damaging the paws (levers). If you knock out rubber-metal hinges with a hammer, microcracks may appear on the lever.
On cars with 4-link suspension, the wheel alignment angles may be disrupted if the levers or new silent blocks are damaged. In this case, you will have to change the rubber-metal bushings and, possibly, the wheels again.
In terms of cost, pullers for automobile silent blocks can be purchased at prices ranging from 800 rubles to 30,000 rubles (a set of different pullers). But, it is easy to make from improvised means. The principle of operation of a mechanical puller is that when the nut is tightened, the silent block itself is squeezed out of the eye of the lever. Hydraulic ones are more complex in design, they are more powerful, but it is better to buy them when necessary; it is impossible to make them from scrap materials.
Purchasing a new item
So, you have found out that problems with the chassis are associated with the breakdown of silent blocks.
Before starting work, you must purchase a new spare part. First of all, look at the labeling. It is important to buy an option specifically for the VAZ-2109. If you make a mistake, it will be impossible to install the silent block. The spare part must be marked: 2109-2914054. Many auto parts sellers may recommend purchasing a spare part from the “ten”, but to install it you will have to work hard to press the rubber part. There are two types of silent blocks:
- With rubber bushings. Traditional spare part, provides softness during suspension operation. The main disadvantage is the fragility of such a spare part, especially if you often travel along sections of the road with poor asphalt surface.
- With polyurethane inserts. More rigid, which is its main drawback. Moreover, such a spare part lasts much longer, since it is resistant to temperature changes and deformations.
Choose a silent block based on material based on your budget and preferences. Manufacturers BelMag, SEVI, SS20 and Boge have earned good reviews from experts and car enthusiasts.
Description of faults and basic information
During vehicle operation, vibrations inevitably appear, which are suppressed by silent blocks. They also prevent deformation. Failure of these parts is accompanied by:
- unstable behavior of the car on the road;
- uneven tire wear;
- squeaks in the rear beam area, impacts on the body (this is especially noticeable on bad roads).
It is worth noting that the described signs are indirect. Loud knocks occur when the rear strut is faulty. In order to accurately determine the cause of the appearance of the described symptoms, it is necessary to diagnose the chassis.
It is necessary to change silent blocks if their design has defects:
- decreased elasticity of the rubber part;
- breakage of the rubber part;
- turning the element in the seat;
- bushing displacement.
If you notice that there are problems with the chassis, you should immediately drive the car into the garage, carry out diagnostics, and then subsequently replace it.
It is worth going for repairs even after the silent blocks have exhausted their service life. It’s not difficult to do it yourself.
Symptoms of a problem
There are several main signs of failure of the rear beam silent blocks, including:
- Unstable behavior of the car on the roads;
- Tires wear unevenly, which is not difficult to notice from the tread pattern;
- When driving on a bad road (that is, 95% of all our roads), unpleasant squeaks and impacts on the car body are observed.
These signs are indirect, since they may be associated with other failures of the vehicle’s chassis. For example, dull knocks are also a sign of a faulty rear pillar. Therefore, in order to make sure that there is a particular problem, you will need to fully diagnose the chassis.

Purpose and functions
Silent blocks perform the following functions:
- Protect components from wear and tear by damping vibrations .
- They dampen vibrations that come from the chassis of the wheels, thus providing a comfortable and soft ride.
- Prevent vibrations and beatings that appear during the movement of the car between different elements of the chassis and engine compartment.
And these are just the main advantages; in fact, there are many more.
