Renault Logan: changing the auxiliary drive belt

Replacing_belt_units_Logan_2005_00

Depending on the vehicle configuration, there are three options for drive schemes for auxiliary units.

Here is a belt replacement option for a car with power steering and air conditioning. Belt replacement procedures for all options (including the one described) are posted on our Wikipedia (link)

How to change the alternator belt on Renault Logan yourself?

To ensure that the car does not fail on the road, it is necessary to monitor its technical condition: change working fluids and consumables in a timely manner. One of the regulated operations is replacing the alternator belt. The article provides detailed instructions and a video on how to change the Renault Logan alternator belt.

The purpose of the generator is to provide electrical energy to all vehicle systems. To do this, its rotor must constantly rotate. This is accomplished by a belt drive between the crankshaft and the generator. When the strap breaks, the car cannot move independently. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the condition of the belt so that there are no unpleasant surprises on the road.

Install the removed parts in reverse order. Before installing the belt, the tension roller bracket must be turned clockwise and locked (see above).

When installing the belt, place it on the pulleys and place it under the tension and support rollers in accordance with the drive diagram.

Attention! The drive pulleys for auxiliary units, generator, air conditioning compressor and power steering pump are six-ribbed, and the drive belt is five-ribbed.

Place the belt on the pulleys like this...

Model without power steering and climate system, how to replace the belt

Structurally, the mechanism on the Renault Logan model range in the absence of power steering is simpler. Therefore, repair actions, as well as direct operation, will not bring as much hassle to the owner as other configuration options. But on 16-valve 1.4 or 1.6 engines this option is practically absent.

But there is also a negative aspect of a similar Renault Logan model - during repair operations, there is a high probability of deformation of the generator when the generator belt itself is strongly tensioned.

The generator is not located where it usually is. Therefore, it is more accessible - the dismantling/installation procedures actually do not take long.

  • The actual dismantling of a broken unit on a Renault Logan and its further repair (or its components, for example, a ring or a pulley) is carried out from the crankshaft.
  • In this option, you should measure the exact tension force of the new belt drive in order to eliminate possible defects in the generator, and tighten if necessary. For this, a special tester or other equipment is used to check the current serviceability of other units - bearings and regulator. But usually the tension force is determined visually for the motorist, because the use of such a measuring device has its own specifics, so everything should be tensioned correctly.

...so that it is shifted to their outer edge 1, and the inner groove of the pulleys 2 remains free.

After installing the belt, slightly turn the tension roller with a key and remove the lock. Then, using a 18-inch socket with a ratchet, we turn the crankshaft clockwise three turns by the bolt securing its pulley to achieve the correct position of the belt.

Renault Logan: changing the auxiliary drive belt

Causes

What is the reason for this phenomenon? If the alternator belt begins to crack before the established replacement period, most likely you have received a defective element. Original products are designed for their entire service life. It is also unacceptable to have oil stains on it. This helps to change the properties of the rubber belt not for the better. It may rupture later. The oil itself can get to the surface due to squeezed out crankshaft oil seals.

If during inspection you find frayed edges, this indicates that the part was not installed correctly. If the tension is incorrect, the problem will be accompanied by a characteristic whistle. As the speed increases, this sound will intensify. A whistle indicates insufficient adhesion to the pulley, which is why the generator will not operate at full capacity. There may be a voltage drop in the vehicle's on-board network.

But in any case, if deformation or cracks are detected, the car needs to replace the alternator belt. Renault Logan 1.6 has a slightly different installation scheme, since it has a hydraulic booster and air conditioning. These units are also driven by the crankshaft pulley. Below we will look at how to replace the alternator belt on a Renault Logan car with and without air conditioning.

Removal and repair

Naturally, in order to remove the generator on Renault Logan, you must first complete the preparatory work:

  • Place Renault Logan 1.6 on a flat surface, secure the car;
  • Dismantle the front wheel on the right side of the car (you will need a tubular wrench and a jack);
  • The final step of this stage is the removal of the special plastic protection.

After this, you can proceed directly to the repair. On the one hand, the alternator on this car brand with air conditioning is attached to just three bolts. On the other hand, dismantling is not as easy as it seems at first glance.

The process itself looks like this:

  1. Initially, the belt is removed. This step is quite simple. To do this, you need to pull the tension roller with a wrench to thirteen, insert any rod into a hole specially designed for this, in fact, fix the roller and perform the final removal of the belt.
  2. Another fairly simple step is to remove the three power steering pump mounts. It should be remembered that on Renault Logan one of the necessary bolts is located on the reverse side of this device. This will allow you to move the pump to the side, although even removing the fasteners will not allow you to perform this operation easily.
  3. The third stage is to disconnect the generator, which is secured with the three bolts described above. The fastener is placed very inconveniently, it is incredibly difficult to get to it, therefore, this seemingly simplest operation will take a lot of time and effort. Naturally, the fixed device must be removed from the place of its direct use. And this is also not entirely easy to do.

To attempt further repairs, the voltage regulator will need to be screwed down. This is a real surgical operation, as you will need to use several instruments simultaneously:

  1. Place several washers of a suitable size into the pulley, and place a nut on them so that it partially sticks out.
  2. Insert the M10 cue ball inside.
  3. Simultaneously working with a spanner wrench, a spanner head and a funnel, perform the intended procedure.

What problems might there be?

  • A sign of a malfunction is an uncharacteristic whistle from the engine compartment (the belt is whistling). This suggests that most likely the pulley and belt have a strong deflection, therefore, using the tool, the belt tension is increased to eliminate whistling sounds. But if sound occurs due to a defective regulator or other problems, a new mechanism must be installed.
  • The most radical option to eliminate whistling is to install a new belt and pulley.
  • Whistling also occurs on parts with a broken regulator. If a whistle occurs and a malfunction of the regulator is determined, this unit is removed from its seat and installed.
  • Also, the cause of malfunctions is the malfunction of the bearing elements. They break for various reasons. The owner of a French Renault Logan 1.6-liter car with power steering, when installing a new component, should rely on the advice of the Renault automaker when purchasing a new part.

Renault prefers Bosch generators and belts in this matter. It is these components and assemblies that are mounted on the sedan.

Now you can find many alternatives, but for normal operation you should install Bosch components.

Preparatory actions

The drive of auxiliary units will be covered with plastic shields. And you can remove them by freeing the wheel arch. Therefore, the front left wheel is supported with a jack and removed. The following sequence is used:

  1. The lower fastening of the fender liner must be pryed off with a screwdriver and removed;
    Step 1
  2. The piston attached to the top of the front shield is unscrewed and removed;
    Step 2
  3. The front shield is not held in place by anything - it can now be removed!
    Step 3

It remains to dismantle the second shield. As a result, access to the belt will be open.

Option 2

The manufacturer recommends checking the belt tension of auxiliary units of a car with power steering and without air conditioning using a special device (strain gauge tester) at the RENAULT dealer service. Considering that the belt may have to be changed on the road (for example, if it breaks), away from the service center, we will show a method in which you can approximately estimate the belt tension. We remove the right mudguard of the engine compartment (see “Removing the mudguards of the engine compartment”. From below the car, with your thumb, press the belt in the middle between the pulleys of the power steering pump and the crankshaft. With a pressing force of ~10 kgf, the belt deflection should be 6 – 8 mm. To tension the belt, loosen the two bolts 4 securing the tension roller bracket and rotate adjusting bolt 3 clockwise. Having tensioned the belt, tighten the bolts securing the tension roller.

Excessive belt tension leads to premature failure of the belt and tension roller, as well as accessory bearings. To replace the belt, turn adjusting bolt 3 counterclockwise several turns and loosen bolts 4 securing the tension roller bracket. Having loosened the belt tension, remove it from the pulleys. Marking of the drive belt for auxiliary units of a car with power steering and without air conditioning is 5K 1110 (five-strand, 1110 mm long). When replacing a belt, you must also replace its tension roller. Install the auxiliary drive belt in reverse order.

The drive pulleys for the auxiliary units, generator and power steering pump are six-strand, and the drive belt is five-strand. Place the belt on the pulleys like this...

...so that it is shifted to the inner edge of pulleys 1, and the outer groove of pulleys 2 remains free. We adjust the belt tension (see above). To accurately check the belt tension, you must contact a service center.

Why is there a belt tensioner pulley in a car?

What is this and what is the video for?

Despite the fact that in any city the number of specialized service centers is constantly growing, such a breakdown can occur at the most inopportune time and place. Therefore, it is very important to know how to carry out such a procedure on your own.

The first thing we see when opening the hood of a Renault Logan is the engine. But those who think that it is needed only to keep the car moving are deeply mistaken. In fact, the motor is designed to perform a number of very important functions. In addition to the fact that the internal combustion engine (internal combustion engine) is a direct source of energy transmitted to the wheels, it also ensures the functioning of a number of systems, such as air conditioning, power steering and, of course, a generator.

All of the above devices are designed to perform their function, but most of them, including the engine, cannot do without the energy generated by the generator.

The generator charges the battery; if the tensioner pulley is faulty, the generator will not provide the required charge and you will stall.

Clear and stable operation of the generator is possible only when the tension of the belt drive is sufficient to supply energy to all consumers. Therefore, almost most cars, regardless of production, have a corresponding alternator belt pulley.

Equipment with power steering without air conditioning

The absence of an air conditioner somewhat changes the alternator belt repair scheme. No special tools are needed to change the belt and rollers. They may only be required if it is necessary to connect a new generator.

Interesting! This configuration is most often found in eight-valve engines with a 1.6 liter engine, and less often in 16V cars.

Sequencing:

  • First, you should check the belt tension, for which you need to compress it in the engine compartment and make sure that the bearings are in good condition. With increased tension, the fastening washers are weakened, and with insufficient tension, they are tightened;
  • Then the adjusting screw is loosened, the idler roller and bearing are changed;
  • All parts that require replacement are updated and reassembled in the reverse order;

It is easier to repair a unit if you use a special tester and circuit to monitor the voltage in the network.
