Cable replacement process
To replace the clutch cable of a Lada Kalina, you will need two things: tools and space. Let's consider each question separately.
Tools
To replace any car part, you need to have a tool. So, to replace the clutch cable you will need:
- Key for 8.
- Ruler and caliper.
- Screwdriver.
- And, of course, a new cable.
When everyone is armed, you can proceed directly to the replacement.
Step-by-step instruction
When everything is ready, you can proceed to step-by-step operations for replacing the cable. They will be performed in two planes - the interior and the engine compartment. Therefore, care should be taken to have good access to both places. So, let's proceed directly to the manipulations:
- We remove the stop from the cable.
- Remove the spring clip from the clutch pedal. To do this, you need to pry it off with a flat screwdriver.
Spring clip close up
Unscrew the nut holding the cable on the ratchet mechanism
For convenience, we remove the air filter
The plate to which the cable on the pedal is attached
When everything is assembled, you can check everything and go.
Causes of malfunction
Decoding the Kalina clutch cable elements
There are several reasons that lead to clutch cable failure. Thanks to the ratchet mechanism installed on Kalina, you can adjust the length of the cable, which makes it possible to change the tension when the friction part on the disk wears out. But the cable cannot be tensioned forever, and therefore sooner or later it fails.
Let's look at the main signs of adjusting or replacing the clutch cable on Kalina:
- Insufficient tension.
- Extraneous sounds when disengaging the clutch.
- The clutch does not disengage completely.
- The pedal falls.
- Gear shifts poorly.
Now that we have decided on the causes of the malfunction, we can move on to choosing a cable and the replacement process.
Why do you need a clutch cable and when to change it?
Thanks to the clutch, torque is transmitted from the transmission to the power unit. The gearbox is connected to the engine by a vehicle, which is a metal cable. It is with the help of the vehicle that the car starts, gears are changed and braking is carried out. Thanks to this lever mechanism, the car moves.
Lada Kalina is equipped with a ratcheting mechanism, thanks to which the length of the cable is adjusted. During clutch operation, the friction linings of the disc are constantly worn out, and the tension of the vehicle changes. The tension is adjusted using a ratchet mechanism.
In theory, the ratchet mechanism works as follows:
- due to the tension of the cable, the clutch release fork (VVS) rotates, causing the spring to compress;
- when compressed, the spring causes compression of the clamps located on the tip of the vehicle;
- Thus, the tip is released, the vehicle is tensioned.
In reality, drivers often have to make frequent manual adjustments.
Clutch cable and adjustment mechanism
Signs that your vehicle needs adjustment or replacement:
- the appearance of extraneous sounds when the clutch is disengaged;
- gears shift poorly;
- insufficient traction;
- the clutch does not disengage completely;
- The clutch pedal (PS) has failed.
Before you start adjusting the vehicle on the Lada Kalina, you should check its condition. The vehicle requires replacement if it is rusty, torn or has any damage. To check the condition of the vehicle, it is necessary to remove the air filter.
conclusions
Replacing the clutch cable of a Lada Kalina is a rather labor-intensive operation and will require some knowledge in the design of the car. But, if you figure it out once, then in the future you can do everything with ease.
If you feel significant play in the clutch pedal, this may mean it is time to replace the cable. You can do this yourself without going to a car repair shop. A little theory. The clutch cable connects two units, namely the gearbox and the engine. The length of the cable is adjustable thanks to a ratchet mechanism. During vehicle operation, the disc linings gradually wear out and, as a result, the tension weakens. But there are times when the cable may break completely. Therefore, if you hear extraneous sounds when shifting gears or notice insufficient traction, or maybe the clutch pedal sinks to the floor, then you should inspect the clutch and replace the cable. Sometimes this part breaks at the most inopportune moment and this situation should be corrected promptly. To help you, we have prepared a detailed guide that even an inexperienced car owner can understand. So let's start the repair.
We use tools and spare parts:
- new clutch cable
- key for 8
- ruler
- flat screwdriver
- calipers
- rags
Adjusting the pedal position
Having completed replacing the cable in LADA Kalina, it will be useful to adjust the pedal assembly. For this purpose, you will need to place the car on a level area. Now we measure the pedal stroke. We use a ruler. We apply it to the floor and the starting point of the pedal. We press and measure. The stroke should be no more than 150 mm. If the fact of excess is evident, then we adjust the position.
To make adjustments, move to the engine compartment. Here, at the junction of the fork and the cable, there are two adjusting nuts. We twist the first one (the locking one), after which we rotate the second one until the required stroke is achieved. Typically this value is 120-130 mm. Continuing to loosen the nut, we increase the free play, and do the opposite - we decrease it.
Step-by-step replacement of the Lada Kalina clutch cable:
1. First, unscrew the cable securing nut with an “ 8″ wrench. It is located on the clutch pedal inside the car. This is the stop of the cable sheath in the pedal bracket.
unscrew with a key 8
2. There is a locking bracket under the nut. It should be carefully removed using a screwdriver.
Carefully remove the retaining clip
3. Next, you need to remove the body of the mechanism that regulates the length of the cable and pull out the cable by disconnecting it from the pedal mount.
Remove the mechanism housing
4. The cable is located behind the air filter; it should be removed. Pull the clutch lever slightly and pull the cable out.
Pull the clutch lever and pull out the cable
Next, work should be done in the engine compartment. Open the hood.
1.Pull the cable out of the fork mount by pulling it towards you.
2.Unscrew the plastic leash by hand.
Unscrew the plastic leash.
3. The cable end has a rubber cover; you should remove it.
Remove the rubber boot from the cable end
4.Disconnect the end of the cable from the holder on the gearbox.
Disconnect the end of the cable on the gearbox
So, if you have successfully completed the previous steps, it is time to replace the old cable with a new one. All actions should be performed in reverse order, namely:
1. Run the new cable into the hole in the front panel in the car's interior.
Installation of a new cable
We carry out the installation procedure following this algorithm. We start with manipulations in the salon.
- First of all, we thread the cable into the engine compartment.
- Now we install the body of the compensation mechanism, which serves to level out wear on the disc linings. We install the body itself on the finger and secure it with a locking bracket.
- We return the cable sheath seal to its place.
- In the engine compartment we pass the cable through the bracket, after which we install the guide sleeve.
- We screw the leash onto the lower tip of the component. Tightening should be done so as to provide the tip with a protrusion of approximately 1 mm.
- Now we pull the cable all the way. When this manipulation is completely completed, we measure the adjustment distance using a caliper. In optimal condition it should be 27 mm. When the measurements give a different value, we rotate the leash and achieve the specified indicator.
- We place a cable end in the groove on the clutch fork. Under the pressure of the spring, the leash will “climb” into the fork.
- By pressing the pedal several times, we check the unhindered functionality of the unit. We immediately control the adjustment gap (27 mm).
Step by step guide
To replace the clutch cable on a Lada Kalina, you need to prepare some spare parts and tools, namely: a new clutch cable, a figure eight wrench, a regular ruler, a rag, a flat screwdriver and a caliper.
- The first thing to do is to pick up the prepared eight-point wrench and unscrew the nut that secures the cable. You will find it on the clutch pedal in the car. This nut serves as a stop for the cable sheath into the bracket.
- Using a flathead screwdriver, remove the retaining clip very carefully. It is located directly under the nut.
- The next step is to remove the housing of the mechanism that regulates the cable, in order to pull out the cable by removing it from its attachment to the pedal.
- The cable itself is located behind the filter; it needs to be removed. To do this, pull up the clutch lever and calmly pull out the cable.
Now it's time to get to work in the engine compartment of the Lada Kalina.
- Open the hood and immediately pull out the cable from the fork-shaped fastening, simply pull it towards you.
- Now we unscrew the plastic leash; you can do this without tools, with your own hands.
- You will see a rubber cover at the end of the cable; this will also have to be removed.
- Now you need to disconnect the end of the cable from the holder located on the box
When does the cable need to be replaced?
Of course, after the fact of its breakdown! However, this is not the only case, because experts recommend leaning towards this procedure if several wires are also broken in the tip. Another relevant advice is related to the need for this repair procedure when the plastic braiding of the cable has acquired visible through damage.
Please pay attention! The clutch cable in a Lada Kalina car can not only break, it is also prone to gradual stretching. As a result, there comes a time when it will not be possible to engage the gear. Situations are more rare if the car has been idle for a long time without moving. This can cause acidification of the cable inside the sheath.

Replacing the old cable with a new one
If you have completed all the steps without any problems, following the above points, the next step will be replacing the old cable with a new one. Now the actions need to be performed in the opposite order, namely:
- We run a new cable into the hole in the front panel in the interior of the Lada Kalina.
- Now the cable needs to be firmly secured to the clutch pedal. To do this, you need to put on the bracket and tighten the nut.
- Also, but in reverse order, we assemble the engine section.
- Pull out the cable to adjust the stroke. Pull it out by the threaded tip until it stops.
- There must be a distance of no more than 27 millimeters from the lever to the plastic leash itself.
- The last step is to adjust the pedal travel; it should not exceed 150 millimeters.
After you finish with all the procedures, you need to press the clutch pedal three times, this will set up automatic adjustment.
The work of replacing the cable is not at all difficult; even a novice car owner can handle it. You will not only save your own money, but also gain experience. Anything can happen, for example, the cable can break right on the road. To make an unexpected replacement on the Lada Kalina easier, it would be a good idea to carry a new, spare clutch cable with you.
The procedure for adjusting the clutch on Kalina
Owners of Lada cars who have discovered faults in their vehicles are interested in how to adjust the clutch. To do this you need to perform a number of steps.
- Pull the cable forward until it stops at the threaded end. In this case, it is necessary to overcome the resistance of the spring attached to the clutch pedal.
- While holding the cable, use a caliper to measure the distance from the plastic leash to the clutch release fork lever.
- By rotating the leash, bring the distance to the required values. Make sure that when releasing the cable, the leash fits tightly to the fork lever.
- Press the clutch pedal three times to activate the automatic cable length adjustment system.
- Check the full pedal travel.
Adjusting the clutch on a Kalina car is a procedure that every owner of this car must master. By performing timely adjustments, you can significantly extend the life of your vehicle.
And so I changed the clutch cable, the question arose, how to adjust?! I looked through the manual, I have two of them! ?! no matter how I twist it, it doesn’t work, the stone flower means the required gap
through simple mathematical calculations. 40- (27+12) = 1 mm, does it seem so? and where to turn it?
How to properly adjust the clutch on a Lada Kalina with your own hands?
- Open the hood and remove the air filter.
- Find the end and pull on it to provide maximum tension to the cable.
- Using a caliper, check the distance between the fork arm and the driver. If the distance is greater than 2.7 cm, rotate the driver along the threads of the tip to correct the size.
- Once you have adjusted the distance, depress the clutch several times and check the clearances again. If there is a shift, adjust everything again. You need to do this until you get the required result.
If you still have not been able to adjust the clutch on your Lada Kalina, contact a specialist, or completely replace it. Although, if you were unable to adjust the clutch, then it is unlikely that you should undertake the work of replacing it.
What does incorrect adjustment of the Kalina clutch lead to?
If the gaps are not set correctly, the auto compensator may not work correctly, or may not work at all if the gap under the hood is too low (10mm or less). The release bearing may also howl.
For example, my release bearing was humming in 4th and 5th gears. After adjusting the clutch cable , the noise disappeared. Many questions also arise about the fact that the clutch “takes over” at the very end. This is, in principle, normal. Structurally, the clutch on Kalina begins to grab in the second half of the stroke. Therefore, setting it up to start the stroke means making constructive changes to its operation, which is not desirable.
Signs indicating the need to adjust the clutch on a Lada Kalina
Among obvious symptoms such as: problems with gear shifting, extraneous sounds when depressing the clutch pedal, poor traction and the clutch not completely disengaging, there are other signs that indicate the need to adjust the Lada Kalina clutch. In order to identify them, carry out a simple check.
- The engine must be completely stopped.
- Depress the clutch pedal several times and listen for any extraneous sounds while pressing, for example, friction, squeaking, clicking, etc.
- Pay attention to whether there is any jamming while moving the pedal. If you cannot feel it with your foot, try pressing the pedal with your hand and check the stroke.
- If the pedal jerks or sticks while driving, the clutch on the Lada Kalina most likely needs to be adjusted .
Other signs of the need to adjust the clutch of your Lada Kalina:
- Take a ruler and check the distance from the floor of the car to the outside of the pedal.
- Depress the pedal fully until it hits the floor.
- Release it and check the distance again; if it exceeds 14.6 cm, it is necessary to adjust the pedal travel.
- If: the full pedal stroke is 14.6 cm, the lower cable guide moves freely relative to the release fork lever by more than 2.7 cm, there is a runout of the driven disk linings of more than 0.5 mm, and the distance between the linings and rivets is less than 0, 2 mm - adjustment or complete replacement of the clutch is necessary.
