Timely replacement of the Opel Astra J fuel filter and fuel pump

During the systematic refueling of a vehicle with low-quality fuel, sediment forms at the bottom of the tank and the line becomes clogged. Passive acceleration dynamics and increased gasoline consumption are the first signs of a decrease in the throughput of the TF.

In cars of the Opel family of modifications Astra N, Astra J, Astra G, fuel filters (hereinafter referred to as TF) are installed in the following order:

  • gasoline engines: TF is built into the housing with a fuel pump, non-separable design, must be replaced as an assembly;
  • diesel: the TF is autonomous from the power unit. As a rule, it is fixed at a safe distance from the fuel rail and injectors.

For the purpose of prevention, use the inspection channel, roadside overpass, or hydraulic lift.

The process of replacing the filter yourself is not at all difficult, but it requires care on the part of the repairman. Seek help from a car repair shop specialist if you have never had to service your vehicle.

Filter design for Opel Astra J gasoline engine

Its only task is to clean gasoline from solid impurities. Of course, the quality of Russian gasoline for the most part leaves much to be desired, and, in addition to solid particles, it also contains various dissolved elements. But a device capable of separating them from gasoline has not yet been invented. This needs to be understood: if the actual octane number of the fuel does not correspond to the declared one, this situation cannot be corrected in any way.

The design of the fuel purification system on Opels with gasoline engines is quite simple. This unit is a metal (usually aluminum) cylinder in which two cellular elements are placed:

  • coarse cleaning element (sometimes called preliminary);
  • fine cleaning (or finishing).

Entering this unit, gasoline first passes through a pre-filter, which is a fine steel mesh - it retains only relatively large particles of contaminants. After this comes the finishing stage. It is carried out using high-quality 10-micron paper, on which very small contaminants are deposited.

Design of diesel fuel purification system

The design of a diesel engine fuel filter differs significantly from the design of a similar device in a gasoline engine. The fact is that in addition to the function of cleaning diesel fuel from solid contaminants, the unit has one more purpose: it retains the excess water contained in it.

The filter on the diesel Opel Astra also heats up the diesel fuel. This is done with the help of a special element that maintains the optimal temperature of the fuel before feeding it into the combustion chambers. Otherwise, paraffin crystals may form in the diesel fuel, which will simply clog the mesh of the main component of the system and the fuel supply will stop.

The fuel filter built into the pump is designed to last the entire service life of the pump.

The mesh – the coarse filter – needs to be changed or cleaned.

Timely replacement of internal cleaners allows you to extend the life of your Opel passenger car. It is not advisable to carry out these manipulations yourself. It is more advisable to contact the experts of the Moscow auto service center “Autopilot”.

Where is it located, price, originals, analogues, articles

Engineers recommend inspecting the TF every 45,000 km. If your car is systematically filled with low-quality fuel, the filter replacement life will be reduced by several thousand kilometers. Natural sediment forms at the bottom of the tank, clogging the fibers of the cleaner.

The filter has a non-separable design and cannot be prevented or repaired.

Causes of filter clogging on Opel Astra (Opel Astra H)

  • operating the vehicle for longer than the recommended period before undergoing a scheduled technical inspection;
  • filling the tank with low-quality fuel, low-octane mixture for a long time;
  • purchase of non-original consumables;
  • the machine was left idle for a long time, in the “preservation” mode, as a result of which natural sediment formed in the circuit.

Fuel cell diagnostics on an Opel Astra

  1. Stop the engine and open the hood.
  2. Inspect the fuel circuit for damage.
  3. Check the serviceability of the fuse (No. 14) of the mounting block, it is located under the dashboard, to the left of the steering wheel;
  4. Check the tightness of the fuel supply line and make sure there are no fuel leaks.

If there are no comments on the integrity of the circuit, then proceed to replacing the TF.

"ASTRA": LOGICAL FORECAST

The costs of maintaining the basic model, although higher than those of some competitors (ZR, 2011, No. 12), remain quite acceptable. The sports modification of the OPC does not lend itself to such an accurate forecast, since a lot here depends on the driving ambitions of the previous owner. Of course, in general these cars get much more, especially in terms of brakes and clutch.

The compact van "Zafira V", built on the basis of the "Astra N", has a similar list of diseases, however, problems with the engine radiator and support bearings of the struts did not affect it, since there is a different set of components and assemblies, and some suspension parts have also been strengthened. Therefore, when you are convinced that cars built on the same platform suffer from the same birth defects, know that this is not always the case.

Instead of a summary: pros and cons

The possibility of additional purification of the fuel entering the fuel system seems positive. Another advantage is the low price of the project. Of course, no one will give guarantees. If there is a leak and the slightest spark, the possibility of a fire cannot be ruled out. In addition, with such innovations, you will no longer show up at an official car service center.

Attention! This article is not a guide to action, but only illustrates one of the ways to improve a car with your own hands.

Opel Astra H 1 9 fuel filter replacement

Replacing the fuel filter in Opel Astra cars yourself requires the car owner to know some of the features of the fuel system. So, in cars with a gasoline engine, the filter is a structural element of the fuel pump and is located in its housing. Because of this, the filter element cannot be changed separately. Replacement is carried out together with the fuel pump. This applies to petrol models Opel Astra A (1.6 l, 1.8 l), Opel Astra H (sedan and station wagon 1.2-1.8 l), H GTC (1.2-1.8 l), H Sport Hatch (1.2-1.8L), H Twin Top (1.6L, 1.8L). To select a fuel pump and fuel filter for these models, use the table that shows the manufacturers and catalog numbers of suitable spare parts. 1.

The fuel pump with fuel filter is located under the rear seat. We remove the seat cushion, fold back the carpet, and find the fuel pump cover. 2. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry up the cover and remove it. 3. Disconnect the wiring harness. 4. By pressing the lock with a screwdriver, disconnect the fuel line fitting. 5. Use a rust removal liquid to treat the areas where the pump is secured with a retaining ring. 6. Turn the locking ring counterclockwise and remove it. 7. Pull out the fuel pump. 8. Having sealed the edges from below with sealant, we install a new fuel pump. 9. We assemble in reverse order. For diesel cars (A 1.7 l; G 1.7 l; 2.2 l; H 1.7 l) the filter is located separately from the injection pump. You can select a filter element from the table below.

The only tools we need are a screwdriver with an asterisk head. 1. The fuel filter is located under the hood on the driver's side closer to the windshield. Remove the ground terminal on the battery. 2. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the central bolt. Disconnect the connectors. 3. Remove the cover and take out the filter element. 4. Install a new one. 5. Close the lid, tighten the bolt, and connect the electrical connectors. This is how we learned how to change the fuel filter on an Opel Astra with diesel and gasoline engines. Continuing the previous topic, today I will focus on replacing the fuel filter (Opel Astra H, Z17DTH engine).

According to the maintenance schedule, this procedure is recommended to be carried out every 30 thousand kilometers, but at least once every 2 years, however, given the possibility of refueling with high-quality fuel, it is possible and more often, especially if non-original filters are used. Many people recommend changing the filter on the eve of winter before the onset of frost to improve fuel pumpability. The replacement procedure itself is quite simple and will not require more than 15 minutes. time. First of all, drain the fuel from the fuel filter. This is done simply, by analogy with draining condensate ( ). Once the fuel has been drained, you can begin replacing the filter. 1) Disconnect the fuel filter sensor and completely unscrew the screw securing the fuel filter cover. 2) Lift the lid, simultaneously turning its bottom side towards you, as shown in the photo.

This way, you don’t have to remove the fuel hoses; the cap can be turned on them quite easily. After the cover is turned, we lower it down, where it is fixed in this position by the filter housing. 3) Remove the filter element (it is mounted on a central rod that fixes its position inside the housing). 4) If there is contamination, clean the housing. We change two rubber gaskets (see photo, positions 1 and 2, included with the filter element). The gaskets can be pre-lubricated with diesel fuel

When working, pay attention to the fuel filter thrust spring (3), although it is firmly attached, you should be careful not to lose it. 5) Place a new fuel filter insert onto the fixing central rod and fill the filter housing with diesel fuel (first make sure that the fuel drain valve is completely closed)

The latter must be poured along the outer contour of the filter to prevent unfiltered fuel from entering the pump and injectors. 6) Put the cover in place, tighten the fastening screw, and connect the fuel filter sensor connector. Carefully wipe the filter housing and start the car. We make sure that there are no leaks through the valve and filter cover.

This is how we learned how to change the fuel filter on an Opel Astra with diesel and gasoline engines.

We have a diesel Opel Astra H under maintenance, on which the fuel filter needs to be replaced. We will show you clear photos and video instructions on how to do this yourself.

The fuel filter in this car is located under the hood, in a glass behind the engine. Disconnect all sensors:

It is convenient to remove the top tube with round pliers:

Unscrew the lid of the glass. It is often difficult to do this with your hands; you can take a small block, rest it against one of the edges and do not tap too hard with a hammer. A plumbing wrench would be ideal for replacing water filters.

We take out the old filter element, be prepared for diesel fuel to pour out of it, so prepare some kind of container or cloth in advance, do not forget to remove the old rubber seal:

The new one will come complete with a new filter, do not forget to replace it. Insert a new filter element:

And we reassemble in reverse order. Before starting the engine for the first time after replacing the fuel filter, turn the key several times partially so that the diesel fuel is pumped through the system and only then start the engine.

What is a fuel filter

In any car, TF is an integral element of cleaning the fuel system. As stated above, this small, inconspicuous part determines the operation of the car as a whole, since it is responsible for the most important process. Namely, for purifying fuel from foreign impurities and moisture (pure gasoline can hardly be found at domestic gas stations).

Today we will tell you about the cleaning fuel cell in Opel Zafira cars. These cars are available in two versions: with gasoline and diesel engines. Cars with gasoline engines require careful and high-quality fuel filtration. This is necessary so that the injector nozzles do not become clogged for a long time, otherwise the car is guaranteed to have abnormal engine operation.

Used TF Opel Zafira with a gasoline engine

As for diesel modifications, these engines are no less sensitive to the quality of the fuel they fill. Diesel cleaning elements filter fuel in three stages:

  1. pre-cleaning;
  2. rough cleaning (continuation of preliminary);
  3. fine fuel cleaning.

Diesel cars require a triple level of filtration due to the fact that D/T (diesel fuel) contains an order of magnitude more condensate or moisture than traditional gasoline. And since the mass of water is higher than the weight of the fuel, it settles at the bottom of the filter, but, thanks to its design, is optimally removed.

But if the filter component becomes clogged over time, then the water in it, accordingly, becomes more. When the humidity reaches a critical level, it must be drained from the filter. At this moment, a special sensor located at the very bottom of the diesel cleaning element housing will signal the driver about the problem via a light on the instrument panel. To the inconvenience of owners of diesel Opel Zafira, the fuel purifier is located in such a place that even if you want to drain the water from it, you still have to remove the filter housing.

New diesel TF for Opel Zafira

Where is the filter located

Now let's figure out where Opel Zafira diesel cars are installed. In vehicles with a gasoline engine, the TF is located under the bottom of the car, on the same level as the rear passenger seat, not far from the gas tank.

As for diesel modifications, the element is located behind a plastic shelf in the engine compartment, opposite the driver’s seat. If you cannot find this element in your car yourself, read about it in the operating instructions or contact your dealer for help.

Fuel filter in a 1.3 l diesel engine

1. The fuel filter is located on the partition in the engine compartment of the car, near the brake master cylinder reservoir.

2. Before starting work, stock up on old rags or newspapers and a container into which you can drain the remaining diesel fuel.

3. Open the hood and see the filter itself.

4. Use a screwdriver to pry up the locking tab...

... and disconnect the electrical connector of the fuel filter sensor.

5. Place a well-absorbing rag around the fuel filter housing, which will collect further spilled diesel fuel.

6. Using a suitable tool, for example, small pliers, press on the locking tabs of the fitting and at the same time pull to the side, ...

...disconnect the upper fuel line from the fuel filter housing cover.

Note: - When disconnecting the fuel line, fuel will leak out, be careful

— Be careful not to allow particles of dust or dirt to get into the disconnected fuel line. If necessary, plug the fuel line with a plug of the appropriate size.

7. Using your fingers or any other suitable tool on the plastic stops, unscrew the ring nut of the fuel filter housing cover.

8. Remove this nut.

When to change, what interior to install

To perform scheduled maintenance operations, there are regulations, as well as manufacturer recommendations. According to them, replacing the cabin filter of the Opel Astra II G heating and air conditioning system should be done every 15,000 kilometers or once a year.

Characteristic symptoms:

  1. Windows often fog up;
  2. the appearance of unpleasant odors in the cabin when the airflow is turned on;
  3. deterioration of the stove and air conditioner;

They may make you doubt that the filter element is coping with its tasks and an unscheduled replacement will be required. In principle, these symptoms should be relied upon when choosing the correct replacement interval.

Suitable sizes

When choosing a filter element, owners do not always use products recommended by the car manufacturer. Everyone has their own reasons for this, some say that the original is unreasonably expensive. Some people in the region sell only analogues, so there is a need to know the sizes by which you can subsequently make a selection.

For DELPHI heater:

  • Height: 30 mm
  • Width: 199 mm
  • Length: 302 mm

For BEHR heater:

  • Height: 30 mm
  • Width: 236 mm
  • Length: 263 mm

As a rule, sometimes analogues for the Opel Astra II G can be a few millimeters larger or smaller than the original, there is nothing wrong with that. And if the difference is measured in centimeters, then of course it’s worth looking for another option.

Selecting an original cabin filter

The manufacturer recommends using exclusively original consumables, which, in general, is not surprising. They themselves are of good quality and are widely available in car dealerships, but their price may seem overpriced to many car owners.

Regardless of the configuration, on all second-generation Opel Astras (including the restyled version), the manufacturer recommends installing the following cabin air filters. Dust with DELPHI heater number 6808606 (Opel 68 08 606) or General Motors GM 13175553. And also dust for BEHR heater with item number 6808611 (Opel 68 08 611) or General Motors GM 93182436.

When choosing between a dust and carbon product, car owners are advised to use a carbon filter element. This filter is more expensive, but it cleans the air much better.

It is easy to distinguish - the paper filter accordion is impregnated with a carbon composition, and therefore has a dark gray color. The filter cleans the air flow from dust, fine dirt, germs, bacteria and enhances the protection of your lungs.

Which analogues to choose

In addition to simple cabin filters, there are also carbon filters that filter the air more effectively, but they are more expensive. The advantage of coal SF is that it does not allow foreign odors coming from the road (street) to penetrate into the car interior.

But this filter element also has a drawback - air does not pass through it well. GodWill and Corteco carbon filters are of fairly high quality and are a good replacement for the original.

However, in some retail outlets the price of the original cabin filter for the second generation Opel Astra may be greatly inflated. In this case, it makes sense to purchase a non-original consumable item. In particular, cabin filters are considered quite popular.

If the heater is DELPHI:

Conventional dust cabin filters

  • MANN-FILTER CU3054 – high-tech consumables from a well-known manufacturer
  • BIG Filter GB-9879 – popular brand, good fine cleaning
  • TSN 9.7.75 is a good manufacturer with an affordable price

Carbon cabin filters

  • MANN-FILTER CUK 3054 – high-quality and thick carbon coating
  • BIG Filter GB-9879/C – activated carbon
  • Raf filter RSTC005CHEY – normal quality, affordable price

If the heater is BEHR:

Conventional dust cabin filters

  • MANN-FILTER CU2757 – high-tech consumables from a well-known manufacturer
  • BIG Filter GB-9875 – popular brand, good fine cleaning
  • TSN 9.7.49 is a good manufacturer with an affordable price

Carbon cabin filters

  • MANN-FILTER CUK 2757 – high-quality and thick carbon coating
  • BIG Filter GB-9875/C – activated carbon
  • Ru54 CF-1055C – normal quality, affordable price

It makes sense to take a closer look at the products of other companies - they also specialize in the production of high-quality consumables for passenger cars:

  • Amd
  • Bosch
  • Denso
  • Filtron
  • Fortech
  • JS Asakashi
  • Knecht Mahle
  • Kortex
  • Masuma
  • Miles
  • Raf filter
  • SCT
  • Sakura
  • Stellox
  • Valeo
  • Zekkert
  • Nevsky filter

It is quite possible that sellers may recommend replacing the Astra II G cabin filter with non-original cheap substitutes with a much smaller thickness. They are not worth buying, since their filtering characteristics are unlikely to be at the proper level.

Signs of a clogged fuel filter on an Opel Astra

  • unstable start of the power unit at different temperature conditions;
  • increased fuel consumption;
  • engine detonation at idle speed;
  • acceleration is slower than usual;
  • lumbago in the exhaust pipe;
  • enriched or lean fuel mixture;
  • The “Check Engine” light on the instrument panel is on.

Causes of filter clogging on Opel Astra (Opel Astra H)

  • operating the vehicle for longer than the recommended period before undergoing a scheduled technical inspection;
  • filling the tank with low-quality fuel, low-octane mixture for a long time;
  • purchase of non-original consumables;
  • the machine was left idle for a long time, in the “preservation” mode, as a result of which natural sediment formed in the circuit.

Fuel cell diagnostics on an Opel Astra

  1. Stop the engine and open the hood.
  2. Inspect the fuel circuit for damage.
  3. Check the serviceability of the fuse (No. 14) of the mounting block, it is located under the dashboard, to the left of the steering wheel;
  4. Check the tightness of the fuel supply line and make sure there are no fuel leaks.

If there are no comments on the integrity of the circuit, then proceed to replacing the TF.

Removing air from the fuel system

17. Air will be removed from the system automatically when the ignition is turned on and the engine starts. If there is too little fuel in the filter, the engine may not start or the engine may stall shortly after starting. In this case, turn the ignition on and off three times, leaving it on for 15 seconds each time. When the ignition is turned on, the electric fuel pump is activated, with the help of which fuel circulates throughout the entire circuit of the fuel system, air is removed and the fuel filter is filled. Restart the engine - hold the ignition key until the engine starts, but no more than 30 seconds. If the engine does not start again, turn off the ignition and after a while repeat the air removal procedure.
