VAZ-2114: what to do if cold air is blowing from the stove

Sometimes owners of VAZ-2114 cars have to deal with the problem of a non-working stove. In particular, such malfunctions cause problems in winter, since the car interior is not only unbearably cold, but also the windshield tends to become covered with a thin crust of ice, which significantly blocks the view. Therefore, if suddenly the stove in a VAZ-2114 stops working, you should immediately find the cause of the malfunction.

These problems can occur for a variety of reasons, ranging from worn-out cooling systems to electrical wiring problems. This article will discuss in detail all possible causes of stove malfunction, thanks to which it will be possible to find a solution to this problem.

It should be noted that symptoms of stove malfunction can be divided into two types:

  1. Cold air is blowing from the stove. Sometimes barely warm.
  2. The stove does not turn on at all or does not work in some individual modes.

Stove tap failure

Quite often, the stove of a VAZ-2114 car blows cold air due to a malfunction of the faucet. In order to get rid of this problem, you should tighten the cable, which can be easily reached from the pedal assembly. You need to have pliers on hand, which, in fact, are used to tighten the cable.

If, after doing all of the above, the stove tap still does not open, there are only two reasons left:

  • the faucet is sour;
  • The faucet needs replacing.

By the way, this procedure should be carried out very carefully, since the tap can easily be torn off, causing the liquid to leak directly into the car interior.

A faulty faucet is indicated by cold air blowing from the car's heater when it is turned on for heating. Another reason to replace the faucet is leakage.

If you decide to replace the faucet yourself, we present to your attention the sequence of actions:

  • unscrew the drain plugs located on the engine block;
  • drain all the coolant that is in the system;
  • clean the studs on the faucet using an iron brush;
  • wet them with WD-40. Thanks to this action, unscrewing will be much easier;
  • loosen the clamps on the pipes and drain the remaining liquid;
  • inside the car, unscrew the side trim, loosen the clamps on the pipes that are directed to the heater radiator;
  • unscrew the nuts under the machine holding the tap;
  • pull the tap out through the cabin;
  • disconnect the cable leading to it;
  • connect it to the new tap;
  • check that all parts are assembled correctly;
  • Proceed with the assembly process in reverse order.

The structure of the VAZ 2114 stove

The heater of this car is a rather complex device that is necessary to heat drivers and passengers. If all the parts in the interior heater are in working order, then the operation of this mechanism will be very effective. Let's look at what the VAZ 2114 stove consists of.

The VAZ 2114 stove consists of the following main parts:

  • Fan;
  • Radiator;
  • Resistor;
  • Dampers;
  • Thermostat;
  • Tap;
  • Air ducts.

Fan

The fan is included in the design of the system for air flow. Power supply by rheostats to the electric motor allows it to operate in three modes, rotating at different speeds. The difference between the heating of the VAZ 2114 and other models is the improved air supply due to the fact that the fan does not draw in air, but pumps it into the body. If there are problems with the stove, the first thing to do is check the condition of the fan motor. There is a possibility of blown fuses.

Radiator

Air heating is supplied to the cabin through the radiator, circulating coolant heated by the engine. It is installed in the heater housing. The radiator must be regularly cleaned and rinsed with running water to avoid malfunctions. Damage to the honeycomb leads to a complete replacement of the radiator.

Resistor

The resistor has two spirals with resistance and regulates the intensity of air flow. It is located above the accelerator pedal. A faulty resistor causes the fan to operate only at maximum speed, that is, in the third mode. In this case, a new resistor is required.

Dampers

The stove design uses three dampers to distribute air flow across zones.

Control flapDirects air flow through the radiator when the stove is operating, or bypassing during ventilation mode.
Feed flapThe air flow is directed towards the windshield.
Redirection flapRedirects warm air into the cabin, to the side windows and to the footwells.

When switching to heating mode, the damper may not fit tightly to the body, causing warm air to stop flowing.

Thermostat

The thermostat keeps the engine warmed up evenly and prevents overheating under high load. This is the large valve that allows coolant to enter the radiator. Over time, the thermostat wears out and begins to work incorrectly when the valve sticks. Failure of this part leads to serious damage.

Tap

The heater valve is designed to regulate the flow of antifreeze that passes through the radiator. It is located under the center console of the car. Oxidation of the faucet and leakage of liquid in the event of a breakdown can complicate the operation of the system.

Air ducts

Air ducts reflect the air flow and direct it to all the necessary areas of the cabin. The movement is regulated by deflectors installed at the ends of the air ducts. Problems with severe air dispersion can occur due to the formation of gaps where the housing and ducts meet.

Relays and fuses

A blown fuse is one of the most common stove malfunctions in a VAZ-2114. This reason is extremely simple, since it can be eliminated by every person who does not have the slightest idea about the structure of a car. However, this reason is also very unpleasant, since it is, firstly, necessary to establish the reason why the fuse blew, and secondly, not so easy. Typically, a blown fuse indicates a problem with the vehicle's electrical wiring.

Weak air flow

This reason arises due to the difficulty of air passing through the channels. This is influenced by several factors, which are detailed below.

Cabin filter

If the cabin filter is used for a long time, it may become clogged, which will lead to a decrease in air throughput and, consequently, to a weak air flow from the stove.

Stove motor

The VAZ 2114 uses a DC motor to pump air into the stoves, which can fail, which will lead to breakdown. It is also quite common that the engine cannot operate at full power due to insufficient voltage. To check, it is necessary to measure the voltage coming to the engine; it must be at least 12V.

Problem with switches

In order to check the serviceability of the stove switches, you need to acquire the simplest light bulb, 12 volts, with two wires. Next, remove the central part of the dashboard and perform the following steps:

  • turn on the car ignition;
  • connect the negative contact from the light bulb to ground with a wire;
  • The positive contact is alternately connected to outputs 1-2-3 on an additional resistor.

If the light comes on during this procedure, this indicates that the switch is working. But if the light does not light up, most likely the fuse has blown or the circuit has broken.

Preventing the operation of the stove in the car

In order for the stove in your car to heat well and not let you down at the most inopportune moment, you need to follow a few simple tips.

  1. Keep the radiator clean. Light contamination from the outside of the radiator can be removed with a vacuum cleaner. Flushing the engine cooling system, with which the heater radiator is inextricably linked, will help get rid of internal deposits and blockages in the channels.
  2. Use good antifreeze . High-quality antifreeze is the key to long-term operation of not only the stove in the car, but also the engine. Remember this and do not forget to replace it in a timely manner.
  3. Change the cabin filter more often . A clogged cabin filter will certainly create problems not only for the operation of the stove, but also for the air conditioning and cabin ventilation system as a whole. In addition, dust and pollen deposited in the filter can pose a serious health hazard (especially for allergy sufferers).

If, at an outside temperature of minus 25 °C, your car’s heater heats the interior to +16 °C from below and up to +10 °C from above, then it can be considered quite serviceable. To avoid problems, it is recommended to carry out preventive measures in a timely and responsible manner that will allow you to enjoy a comfortable ride in a well-warmed-up car.

And remember, the longer the service life of the machine, the more attention its heating system requires. This applies to all cars, regardless of country and manufacturer.

Stove motor failure

Of course, the stove motor, like, in fact, any other electrical part of the VAZ-2114, can burn out over time. However, before deciding to replace it, it is necessary to check the functionality of all fuses, the temperature mode switch, and the ignition relay. If all the above parts are in order, then the problem is still in the motor.

To replace it, you must first disassemble and then remove the entire dashboard, turn off the heater valve, and also drain the antifreeze or antifreeze. Next, we remove all the pipes, take out the old motor, and install a new one in its place. Once the functionality of the new heater has been verified, the system can be refilled with the fluid that was drained at the beginning of this process.

Prevention methods

To avoid a reoccurrence you will need:

  • The first preventative measure is to disassemble the system in advance and clean every part.
  • The presence of a clean cabin filter under the hood. As you understand, a dirty and clogged filter prevents the passage of hot air, and for the same reason the radiator becomes covered with a large layer of dirt.
  • Fresh antifreeze. It needs to be changed regularly and maintained at the proper level. Then the air supply to the radiator through the thermostat will be uninterrupted.
  • Hermetically sealed faucet and radiator. This can be verified when the engine is well warmed up.

A functioning heating system will be confirmed by the silent, well-functioning operation of the fan and a continuous flow of warm air even when the car is static.

Good luck on the roads!

Pump 2114 does not work, what should I do?

If the heater blows cold at idle, the cause may be a pump failure. The pump does not provide the required circulation of antifreeze in the system. Similar problems can be accompanied by a lack of antifreeze. When replacing the pump, you should pay attention to Belmag duralumin products.

Previously common HEPU pumps are often counterfeited, so it’s better not to buy them.

Thermostat air lock, how to remove

The problem may also be an air lock. It may appear if, after stopping the power unit while the antifreeze is cooling, air enters the upper section of the cooling radiator and then moves to the thermostat. When you next start the engine, air will enter the heater radiator using the water pump (at the same time, cold air will blow from the air ducts).

To remove the air lock, you should remove the pipe that goes into the heater, then add coolant to the top. The level of antifreeze in the system should be at least about or a centimeter above this mark. If there is a lack of fluid, the heater does not blow the warmest air.

The radiator is clogged, how to clean it

Sometimes the heater core becomes very clogged. The only solution in this case is to remove the spare part with further cleaning and purging, or replacement. As a rule, after this the stove heats up like new. Some drivers, when replacing a heater radiator, purchase Ukrainian-made products. Such radiators are characterized by low heat transfer to the interior, which is due to their design features. It is worth noting that experienced owners of VAZ cars advise buying only DAAZ brand radiators, since with them the stove heats better.

The most common causes of problems

Most often, the phenomenon in which cold air blows from the VAZ 2114 stove on the sides and onto the windshield is caused by one of the following reasons:

  • The thermostat has failed;
  • air got inside the cooling system;
  • The heater regulator has broken or its cable has become loose.

In addition, in quite rare cases, the cause may be a failed (clogged or leaking) radiator - you should start troubleshooting the system by checking it.

To do this, you need to completely warm up the car engine and carefully touch the pipes leading to and from the heater - if they are all hot, then the heater is working and you should look for the cause elsewhere.

Check the functionality of the thermostat and replace it only if the heating system does not work completely. If warm air enters the cabin, but only locally, then the reason most likely lies in a faulty heater regulator.

This element can fail for several reasons:

  • the sealing foam layer has collapsed;
  • the foam has peeled off and moved;
  • The damper is sagging due to the loosening of the control cable.

The first two malfunctions (as well as the methods for eliminating them) are quite elementary - just glue the foam rubber or replace it with a new one, but the third case should be examined in more detail.

The reason that the stove blows cold air from the sides on a VAZ 2114 when the damper is not tightly closed is its design.

The heater is designed in such a way that the side airflow channels begin right under the damper, and even if it is slightly displaced (literally a few millimeters), instead of warm air, cold air from the deflectors begins to blow, coming directly from the street.

To eliminate this malfunction, you will need to tighten the cable that regulates the position of the damper.
