Changing the oil in a Lada Granta gearbox with a cable drive with your own hands

Since 2013, almost all front-wheel drive VAZ cars are equipped with a “cable” gearbox. In Grant sedans, it replaced a less reliable unit designated as “2190”. In addition to the fact that the drive became a cable drive, other changes appeared. The new box is called “VAZ-2181”, and the volume of its crankcase has been reduced from 3.3 to 2.3 liters. Here we discuss how to change the oil in a Lada Granta gearbox with a cable drive.

A rare case: the “2181” gearbox began to howl at 800 km. There is confirmation in the video, and the problem was solved by changing the oil.

Oil change tool

So, before changing the oil in the gearbox, you need to make sure you have all the necessary tools . Below is a list of those:

1. Open-end and spanner wrenches (size - 17, 19, 22, 24); 2. Flat screwdriver; 3. Container for used oil (canister or bottle of 4 liters or more); 4. Plastic container 1.5 liters; 5. Cutting object; 6. Jack; 7. Metal brush; 8. Clean rags; 9. Sealant (optional).

It is also advisable to have some kind of stands for the car in the form of bars and protective gloves for your hands.

Instructions for changing the oil in the VAZ 2181 (90) Granta gearbox

So, you have equipped yourself with all the necessary tools and now you can begin to directly replace the lubricant in the gearbox. In this instruction, we were guided by the fact that you will have to perform all the actions in the garage without an inspection hole. If there is one, then the replacement will be somewhat easier and simpler. It is very convenient to carry out all operations on a lift or overpass, but this is ideal.

First you need to familiarize yourself with all the filler and inspection holes of the transmission. Especially for this, we have prepared a drawing with the location of the required filler spots, on which the number 1 indicates the filler hole, number 2 the control hole, and number 3 the drain hole.

Now let's look at the procedure step by step:

1. The very first thing to do is warm up the gearbox. We start the car and drive a few kilometers so that the used oil warms up. This is done because heated oil has a more liquid structure and drains better.

2. Now cut out a piece of plastic in the previously prepared container so that the used oil flows there (picture below).

3. Use a jack and lift the right side of the car.

Important! Make sure that you have wheel chocks in advance so that the car does not roll spontaneously and is indestructible. Also place a block under the car and loosen the jack. This will securely secure the car and protect you from trouble.

4. We crawl under the car and find the drain hole. If there is a crankcase protection, then, as a rule, a special technological hole is made in it for changing the oil. If the protection is solid, then it will have to be removed. When the hole is found, use a metal brush to clean it from dirt and dust. After cleaning, wipe the plug and the area around it with a clean rag.

5. Use the key “17” to unscrew the drain plug. We first install the prepared container under it. When the used oil runs, be careful because it is warm and can burn your hands, so work only with gloves and long sleeves. We wait about 15 minutes for the old oil to completely drain out.

6. While the “working off” is draining, you need to free access to the car’s filler plug. To do this, disconnect the battery terminal. After this, unscrew the mounting screws of the air filter housing. We also disconnect the mass air flow sensor terminal and all other wires (hoses) that may interfere when removing the housing.

How to make a replacement?

Many owners go to a service station to change the oil in the box of Lada Grants. This is a good solution, since all the work will be done for you by experienced specialists, but they will have to pay a certain amount. If you want to save money and don’t want to part with your hard-earned savings, you can handle the oil change in Grant yourself. Read about the selection of oil at the link.

The process of replacing lubricant in an automatic transmission is more complicated than in a manual transmission, but even a beginner can easily cope with this task.

Choosing oil

Let us immediately note that the automatic transmission of the Lada Granta is filled with oil that does not require too frequent replacement, since it has good performance characteristics and guarantees uninterrupted operation of the unit throughout the entire service life of the machine. Consequently, on Grants with an automatic transmission, an oil change is required only when repairing the unit. Reusing old grease in this case is strictly prohibited.

On sale you can find different types of lubricant compounds suitable for the Lada Granta automatic transmission, but experts recommend using Genuine EJ-1 ATF from JX Nippon Oil and Energy Corporation.

It is important to note that all parts of the Granta automatic transmission should be wiped only with lint-free paper. Even the smallest foreign particles penetrating into the box can greatly harm it, for example, by clogging the throttle openings. This will inevitably lead to a deterioration in the performance of the transmission, up to its complete breakdown.

What will you need for the job?

To change the oil in the automatic transmission of Lada Granta you will need a simple set of tools:

  • key to 10;
  • ring key 19;
  • hexagon 5;
  • new oil;
  • smooth fabric;
  • empty container for draining old oil.

Let's start replacing

It is recommended to carry out work on replacing old oil on a special lift or in a pit - these are the most convenient options. You will need to do the following:

  1. Unscrew the drain bolt using a 19mm wrench (number 2 in the diagram).
  2. Using a 5mm hexagon, unscrew the overflow plug (number 3).
  3. We substitute the prepared container and drain the waste liquid.
  4. We screw the overflow plug into place and then tighten the drain bolt, after installing a new sealing washer.
  5. When changing the oil in the Grants gearbox, you will need about 1 liter of fluid.
  6. Next, you need to pull out the dipstick to check the level and pour one liter of new fluid into the hole.
  7. Check the fluid level to ensure it is between the min and max marks.

Replacement in manual transmission

In a Lada Granta manual transmission, changing the oil is even easier, but it is also important to be able to choose the right lubricant, taking into account all the existing subtleties.

Which liquid should you choose?

Of the domestic oils in the Lada Granta manual transmission, you can use Lukoil TM 4. It is important to know that the viscosity class depends on the region in which the car is operated - 75W-(80, 85, 90), 80W-(85, 90).

Among the domestic brands of oils for Granta manual transmissions, you can use Lukoil TM4. The viscosity class of the fluid must be selected taking into account the region in which you operate the vehicle. The most universal are considered:

You can also use the following brands of oils:

  • TRANS KP;
  • THK TRANS KP SUPER;
  • Rosneft KONENIC;
  • THK Trans KP-2;
  • NOVOIL TRANS KP;
  • SHELL TRANSAXLE OIL.

Tools for work

To change the oil in a Granta manual transmission, you will need a certain set of tools, including:

  • key to 17;
  • funnel;
  • new transmission oil;
  • hose;
  • container for draining old oil 5 liters;
  • rags.

Replacement stages

To change the oil in a Granta box, you need to do the following:

  1. Drive the car into the inspection pit, but warm up the transmission first so that the oil becomes thinner and drains better.
  2. Clean all surfaces near the drain plug from dirt. For Granta you will need approximately 3.1-3.5 liters of transmission fluid in the manual transmission.
  3. Using a 17mm wrench, unscrew the drain bolt and drain the old fluid into a container, and then screw the plug into place.
  4. Pour new fluid into the box using a hose and funnel inserted into the dipstick hole.

As you can see, there is nothing difficult in changing the oil in the box of a Lada Granta, and doing the work yourself will help you save money and eliminate queues at the service station.

Possible difficulties with changing oils

Some Lada Granta owners may have difficulty purchasing Tatneft gear oil. But if it is not sold in a given region, you can safely switch to the chemistry of any other of the previously mentioned manufacturers. For automatic transmissions, it is not advisable to purchase NISSAN Matic D if it is impossible to buy NISSAN Matic Fluid S. In such a situation, ATF NISSAN Fluid Matic J is suitable.

Possible difficulties with changing oils

In addition, the problem of counterfeit auto chemicals has not yet been resolved in our country. Such transmission fluids are especially dangerous for a robot or automatic machine. Therefore, you should buy chemicals from trusted places. In this case, you can check with the seller for the availability of documentation for the product confirming its authenticity.

Possible difficulties with this procedure also include the eternal struggle of some owners with howling in the manual transmission. There is no point in solving this problem by pouring “mineral water” or oil thicker than recommended. On the contrary, it is worth pouring good quality synthetic fluid. This will help reduce the noise a little. But there is no need to add additives and apply other tips from the Internet without the recommendation of a specialist. It has been proven that these sounds have virtually no effect on the service life of the unit. They basically only cause acoustic discomfort to the car owner.

Sometimes partially replacing the fluid in a machine at a technical center is not cheap. But this procedure can be performed independently if you have a garage and some experience.

Standards and factors

How much lubricant will be used depends on its quality, viscosity, operating conditions and driving style. On average, according to the manufacturer’s documentation, the consumption per 1000 km for the Grant will be as follows:

  • 8 valves, engine capacity 1.6 l, power 87 hp: consumes 50 g;
  • 16 valves, motor models of all varieties: consumption 300 g.

Engine oil can be consumed more intensively - a whole list of factors affects:

  1. Overflow of lubricant;
  2. Clogged or faulty filter;
  3. Oil viscosity. The seasonal variety is used up faster than the all-season variety. But the last one is more likely
  4. loses viscosity;
  5. Malfunction or high degree of wear of engine components: pistons, cylinders, pumps;
  6. In a new or overhauled engine, the increased oil consumption is explained by the grinding of the elements. When it ends, consumption should return to normal.

In some cases, the reason for high expenses may be difficult to determine. But eliminating the problem is an urgent and extremely important task. Delaying it usually ends in the need for expensive and major repairs.

Timing for replacing the engine oil in Lada Granta Liftback

The manufacturer, in the operating instructions, indicates the following maintenance intervals:

  • Maintenance – 1 (technical inspection): 2000 – 3000 km;
  • TO – 2: 15000 km;
  • TO – 3: 30,000 km;
  • TO – 4: 45,000 km;
  • TO – 5: 60,000 km;
  • TO – 6: 75,000 km;
  • TO – 7: 90,000 km;
  • TO – 8: 105,000 km.

Engine oil volume in Grant Liftback Regardless of the engine modification: 8, 16 valve, the amount of fluid is 3.5 liters. 3.30 liters are poured directly into the engine, and 100 - 150 grams into the oil filter during the process of replacing consumables.

Type of engine oil (8 and 16 valves) What kind of oil to fill in Granta Liftback: since the range of engines complies with Euro - 4 standards, the minimum acceptable class is semi-synthetic, viscosity 10W - 40. However, the manufacturer does not prohibit filling “synthetics” with viscosity index: 0W – 40, 5W – 40. As necessary, the owner can fill in seasonal, winter, summer oils, abandoning the all-season type 10W – 40.

Problem of choice

So, what kind of oil is better to fill in the Lada Granta? The manufacturer of the line advises using semi-synthetic lubricants produced by Russian manufacturers. The most common are Lukoil and Rosneft 5W-30. They are the ones that are poured at dealership centers during maintenance. However, some grant makers are in no hurry to follow AvtoVAZ’s recommendations. Therefore, they use analog lubricants.

Semi-synthetic, mineral water or synthetic

Many car owners have their own point of view about which oil is more appropriate for the Lada Granta. Semi-synthetics and mineral options do not quite suit them. Pure synthetics have clear advantages over the alternative.

  • Synthetic oils have higher temperature stability.
  • At subzero temperatures they retain better fluidity. Accordingly, in cold weather the engine starts faster.
  • Synthetics have higher anti-friction properties.
  • The lubricating properties of such oils are more powerful, due to which the engine life is increased and fuel consumption is reduced.

Common mistakes

  • There is no need to chase the “GL-5 quality class”. When using oils of this class, gears are better preserved, but the durability of synchronizers is reduced. The reason is the presence of “additives” and “supplements”.
  • Decide when to change the oil in the Lada Granta box. The winter replacement option is not the best. Oil thickens in the cold, but we don’t need that.
  • You need to warm up the box while moving. There is an option “gas to the floor while standing in neutral,” but it is very ineffective.

Algorithm: how to change

The engine oil in Grant is supposed to be changed every 15-20 thousand kilometers. The range is determined by the degree of load on the car. The higher they are, the more often the lubricant should be changed. The amount required for replacement varies depending on the type of transmission. A system with an automatic requires 4.4 liters of oil, for a car with a manual – 3.2.

You can change the engine oil yourself. It looks like this step by step:

  • Warming up the engine to operating temperatures.
  • Installing a car on an overpass or inspection hole.
  • Power plant shutdown.
  • Removing the crankcase protection (if you have a 16-valve model).
  • Removing the plug from the filler neck.
  • Cleaning the drain hole around the perimeter.
  • Removing the plug on the pallet (you will need a 17 mm or hex key).

  • Draining used oil.
  • Return the plug to its place.

  • Cleaning the filter housing.
  • Fill the new filter halfway with oil. O-ring lubrication.
  • Installation of a new filter.
  • Add oil through the top neck. The total volume is 0.5 liters below normal.
  • Checking the lubricant level with a dipstick. This is carried out no earlier than 3 minutes after filling.
  • Test start of the engine, monitoring the absence of leaks, re-checking the lubricant level, topping it up if necessary.

Manipulations should be carried out in protective gloves - the drained oil is characterized by a high temperature.

Transmission Lubricants

Now let’s figure out which oil is more suitable for the Lada Granta box than others. The performance of the car depends on it to the same extent as on the engine. To maintain operational functions, certain rules must be followed.

  • Check the lubricant level in a timely manner. The frequency for cars with manual transmission is every 15 thousand mileage, for cars with automatic transmission – every 5 thousand. Sometimes there is a need for intermediate checks: if oil leaks are found on the crankcase.
  • If the oil level drops, top up to normal.
  • After traveling 70-75 thousand km or after 5 years of low-intensity use of a car with an automatic transmission, the lubricant must be replaced. If the Lada Granta is equipped with mechanics, the first change is carried out after 2 thousand kilometers, the subsequent ones - every 10-15 thousand kilometers traveled or annually.

What kind of oil is used in Liftback from the factory?

By default, the manufacturer fills in the break-in fluid before the first maintenance. Class - mineral base. The fluid must be replaced upon reaching a mileage of 2–3 thousand km. Subsequent operation of the machine with break-in oil is extremely unsafe for the functionality of the engine. Oil consumption Lada Granta Liftback Regardless of the quality of assembly and components, the power unit consumes oil. The natural needs of the engine are at the level of 100 - 150 ml / 1000 km. Exceeding the permissible range indirectly indicates the presence of a malfunction.

Classification by temperature conditions For clarity, we indicate the data in a tabular version:

MarkingTemperature
5Woptimal for the climatic region – up to (-35℃)
10Wmoderate temperatures up to (-30℃)
15Wup to (-25℃)
20Wup to (-20℃)

Manual or automatic transmission

As for what kind of oil to pour into the Lada Granta gearbox, the answer to the question is determined by the type of box. First of all, mineral lubricants are only permissible for mechanics. And then: experienced users do not recommend resorting to them. They are completely unsuitable for a machine gun.

Car owners have managed to figure out which oil in the manual transmission of a Lada Granta performs ideally. The list includes:

  1. Lukoil TM 4;
  2. Tatneft Translux TM4-12;
  3. Shell;
  4. Rosneft Konenik;
  5. Novoil Trans KP.

There is also an opinion on the question: what kind of oil to pour into the Lada Granta automatic transmission? The best lubricants are recognized:

  1. Genuine EJ-1 ATF;
  2. Semi-synthetics produced by Lukoil
  3. Nissan ATF Matic—S.

When adding oil, use the same lubricant that was used before.

What transmission fluid to buy

Stores may offer you different options for transmission fluid, but not every one is suitable for the updated manual transmission of the Lada Granta. At the factory, Tatneft Translux with a viscosity of 75-85 is poured into it. We recommend that you choose oils with a viscosity of 75 to 90, as this is the best option for our climate.

In the store, it is important for you to find original oil of one of the brands:

  • Trans KP from TNK (you can purchase something similar, but marked Super);
  • Konenic;
  • Shell Transaxle Oil;
  • Rosneft;
  • Lukoil TN4;
  • Novoil Trans KP;
  • Trans KP2 from TNK.

Changing the oil in the Granta gearbox

How to fill a Lada Granta with oil into a box is again determined by the type of gearbox. Let's start with the mechanics.

  • The car is driven onto an inspection hole or overpass. Preferably after a long trip.
  • The protection is removed from the drain; the edges are carefully cleaned with a wire brush.
  • The plug is screwed off, and the waste is poured into an unnecessary container.
  • During the process of draining the battery, the terminal is unscrewed, the fasteners securing the air filter are unscrewed, the air flow sensor and all hoses with cables that interfere with dismantling the housing are turned off.
  • The filter moves to the side.

  • The drain hole is clogged with a lid.
  • The dipstick is removed from the filling hole and a funnel is placed in its place. Oil is poured through it.
  • With the Lada in a strictly horizontal position, the level of transmission fluid is measured. The insufficient volume is replenished, the excess is drained. Drops and streaks are wiped off with a clean rag.
  • Everything dismantled is put back in place in the reverse order.

At the end of the work, a test drive is done with gear shifting, and the oil level is measured again. If necessary, it is corrected.

When changing the oil in an automatic transmission, the initial steps are the same: warming up the automatic transmission, placing the car on a ramp. Your further actions are as follows.

  1. Using a 19mm wrench, unscrew the drain bolt.
  2. The overflow plug is removed with a 5mm hexagon.
  3. The waste liquid is drained.
  4. A washer-seal is installed (necessarily a new one).
  5. The plug and bolt are returned to place.
  6. A short drive is made to warm up the oil. Its temperature should fluctuate between 60 and 80 degrees.
  7. Without turning off the engine, the gearbox first switches from position P to position 1, and then back. In each position, the lever must be held for approximately 5 seconds.

A control check of the lubricant level is also carried out with the car body strictly horizontal. During the oil change process, all elements are wiped dry with paper or a lint-free cloth.

How to recheck the oil level

Remember, the test is always carried out on a warm automatic transmission! Since the oil in an automatic transmission takes longer to warm up, you need to warm the box up to operating temperature. When it reaches the desired temperature, the fan will turn on, which cools this liquid once or twice. Carry out the test only on a flat surface!

  1. First, start the engine and apply the brake.
  2. You need to check all transmissions.
  3. Shift into gear "P". Then move it to position “1”. Then from “1” to “2” and so on until you have checked all the gears. At this time the engine is running.
  4. With the engine still running, pull out the dipstick, wipe it and try to check the level. If the automatic transmission is not warmed up, then use the Cold marks, and if it was warmed up, then Hot. These inscriptions are located on different sides of the probe. To see them, remove the engine air filter housing.

Feedback from grantmakers

By the way: the Lada Grant has various engines. On the most inexpensive trim levels there are eight-type ones, and the drain plugs are unscrewed with a hexagon. In non-budget configurations and a cable box - key 17. This must be kept in mind! Alexander Vasilievich

It’s unlikely that you can change the oil in a quarter of an hour! The dirt and oil must be allowed to drain thoroughly: you remove the filter, then wait for half an hour and let all the dirt go away...

It took quite a long time to choose from oils. At first there was a long digging through a large number of reviews on forums, information on websites for Grant, but I finally settled on Liqui Moly 5W-40. This is one hundred percent synthetic. The company has also been verified by reviews; many have been using it for a long time and recommend it.

Many people do not have the habit of paying attention, when changing engine oil, to the oil filter and also to its manufacturer. in vain! Even when you have the most expensive oil, your car can suffer because of this filter. In non-original ones (as an option: in general, it’s not clear whose production) the reduction valve may get stuck, and there will be a constant oil starvation of the engine. Therefore, carefully buy filters, take proven brands, from a spare parts supplier that has been tested by time and reviews. Basil

The best motor oil. does it exist?

  • Frequent driving on bad and dusty roads, including off-road, which is not provided for by the vehicle’s capabilities
  • Regular driving at high speeds, sudden maneuvers, non-compliance with traffic regulations, including aggressive driving style
  • Constant temperature changes, rapid climate change, dirt and slush on the roads
  • The driver makes mistakes in shifting gears, and as a result, it overheats

This is not to say that the Lada Granta is not at all suitable for such conditions. Russian owners sometimes have to subject their car to high loads, given difficult climatic conditions. But it must be borne in mind that this will negatively affect the beneficial properties of the oils. As stated above, it will become unusable ahead of schedule. Therefore, it would be advisable to reduce the replacement frequency by two or three times - for example, change the oil every 50 or 40 thousand kilometers.

In addition, it would be a good idea to check the level and condition of the fluid in a timely manner so that you can make a timely replacement.
