Oil selection

In this matter, it is best to follow the manufacturer’s advice, because it is with a specific type that the factory guarantees the best engine performance. A list of recommended fluids for replacement is located at the end of the vehicle's owner's manual. It is recommended to fill the VAZ 2114 car with semi-synthetic with a viscosity of 10W-40. Which specific manufacturer to choose is a personal matter for the motorist. But it should be taken into account that you will have to pay a large amount for a promoted brand (after all, advertising costs a lot of money).

The first oil change on a VAZ-2114 was always performed after break-in. And if we were talking about an authorized service, Rosneft products were poured into the engine - semi-synthetics with a viscosity of 5W-30.

For topping up, Rosneft Premium or Rosneft Maximum oil was recommended, but with a rating of 5W-40 or 10W-40.

When replacing, it is better to fill in the same thing, or rather, semi-synthetic “Maximum”.

You can go around the recommendations. But then the new oil must be used as a flushing oil: the system is refueled, then it is necessary to drive 30-50 km and perform a second change. The choice itself must be within the limits initially determined by AvtoVAZ:

  • API quality: SL, SM or SN;
  • Quality according to STO (RF): AAI-B5 or AAI-B6;
  • ACEA ash class: A3/B3 or A3/B4.

Viscosity is selected depending on the climate:

  • -40 – +30: 0W-40;
  • -40 – +25: 0W-30;
  • -30 – +25: 5W-30;
  • -30 – +35: 5W-40;
  • -25 – +25: 10W-30;
  • -25 – +35: 10W-40;
  • -20 – +45: 15W-40;
  • -15 – +45: 20W-40.

In VAZ 2114 cars, the oil and oil filter must be changed after every 15 thousand kilometers. The replacement process is quite simple, and for this it is not at all necessary to contact a car service. All you need for replacement is a 17mm wrench, a container to collect old oil, a rag, fresh oil and a new filter.

Before you start changing the oil, you need to warm up the engine to 700C. Only after this do we drive the car into a pit, overpass, or simply jack it up so that we have access to the crankcase drain plug. We place a prepared container under the plug to collect the waste.

1. Unscrew the filler cap.

2. We climb under the car and find the crankcase plug to drain the oil.

3. Unscrew it using a 17 key.

4. Wait until all the oil has drained into the container.

5. Screw the drain plug back.

6. Determine the location of the filter. It is located on the rear side of the engine (as viewed from the hood), to the left of the manifold.

7. Unscrew the filter by turning it counterclockwise. If it is impossible to turn it, and there is no special puller at hand, you can pierce its body with a screwdriver and turn it, using it as a lever.

8. Remove the old filter and put it aside. Fill the new filter with fresh oil to the brim.

9. Install a new filter.

10. Pour new oil into the neck. We control its level using a dipstick.

11. Tighten the neck plug.

Turn on the ignition, start the engine, wait until the oil pressure light goes out. Check the level and add oil if necessary.

How often to change the oil

The frequency of changing engine oil in 2114 depends primarily on the operating conditions of the vehicle, the oil itself, and also on the mileage. If the engine has traveled more than 150 thousand km, we recommend replacing it every 10,000 km or even earlier. Some motorists change their oil even after 8,000 km. This way they extend the life of their car’s engine.

The oil filter must be changed at every oil change. The old used filter is disposed of; its re-installation is undesirable, since it has already exhausted its service life.

If you have just purchased a car, or do not know what kind of oil is filled in, we recommend that when changing the oil, you first fill in the flushing oil. The cost of flushing oil is about 400 rubles, and the flushing time is about 15 minutes. Very often, when flushing the engine, the flushing oil drains out black, which indicates oil deposits. If black oil drains out during flushing, we recommend flushing again.

What kind of oil should I use?

Properly selected motor lubricant is the key to long-term operation of the VAZ 2114. But how to choose the right oil for the engine of this vehicle? When choosing a lubricant for the VAZ 2114, it is recommended to pay attention to the following characteristics:

  • Viscosity of technical fluid (depending on the time of year);
  • Quality of motor lubrication. When purchasing oil for a VAZ engine from a reputable manufacturer, you should beware of counterfeits;
  • Suitability of a certain brand of technical substance for use as a lubricant for the VAZ 2114 engine.

Oil change intervals

The frequency of oil changes directly depends not only on the total mileage, but also on the condition of the car. So, if the car is completely new, then the first replacement should be done after a run of 3,000 km (at this time, units and parts are still being run-in, as a result of which a larger than usual amount of metal particles is formed).

It is recommended to perform the second oil change on a new car after another 6,000 km (that is, after 9,000 km of total mileage).

The third, and all subsequent replacements, can be performed every 15,000 km (with intense loads on the engine, for example, with a sporty driving style, or oil of not the best quality - every 10,000 km).


Oil filler neck

The above rule for the first and second oil changes also applies to an engine after a major overhaul and to a car with a replaced engine.

If the car was purchased secondhand, then it is recommended to change the oil immediately, regardless of the assurances of the previous owner. This is due to the fact that it is impossible to determine “by eye” how long ago it was replaced with great accuracy, and operating a car with old oil is highly not recommended due to the possible consequences for the engine.

Contrary to popular belief, changing the oil rarely when you rarely use your car is not a good idea. Even if half the required mileage has not been completed in a couple of years, it is still recommended to replace it during this time. This is due to the fact that during long periods of inactivity, the oil mixes with condensate, which leads to the formation of an active medium and faster wear of the engine.

It should also be noted that the oil should be changed depending on the season.

So, they distinguish:

  • summer;
  • all-season;
  • winter.


Popular brands of oil for VAZ 2114

Moreover, each of them is divided according to the extreme permissible temperature indicators (all of them are indicated directly on the canister, and it is they who are recommended to be guided by when buying oil for use in a particular region).

All-season oil can be used only in southern and middle latitudes, and in the latter only in the absence of severe frosts (for most such oils - not lower than -20 C). The use of this (and, especially, summer) oil at extremely low temperatures can cause its excessive thickening and, as a result, damage to moving units.

The most optimal oil recommended for use in VAZ cars in Russia (with the exception of the regions of the Far North) is semi-synthetic 10W-40.

Instructions

  1. We warm up the engine to 45-50 degrees. Warm oil has better fluidity and will drain better from the engine during a complete replacement. Our task is to remove as much as possible the old dirty and used fluid that no longer has useful properties from the engine and fill it with new one. If a lot of old dirty oil remains in the crankcase, it will be swept away with the new one and will worsen its beneficial properties. Warm up the engine for 5-7 minutes before starting, this will be sufficient.
  2. For easy access to the drain plug (and in some models the oil filter is also attached from the bottom) and the bottom of the car as a whole, you need to jack it up or drive into an inspection hole (the best option). Also, some models may have engine crankcase “protection” installed.
  3. We open air access to the crankcase by unscrewing the filler cap and dipstick.

  4. Place a large container (equal to the amount of oil being poured).
  5. Unscrew the drain plug with a wrench. Sometimes the drain plug is made like a regular “bolt” under an open-end wrench, and sometimes it can be unscrewed using a four- or hexagon. Don't forget to wear protective gloves, the oil will most likely wake you up warm, but you need to be careful. After unscrewing, you need to inspect the plug for thread defects; if this occurs, the plug needs to be replaced. Also, when replacing, ideally the washer (usually copper) is also changed.

  6. We wait about 10-15 minutes until the waste flows into a basin or cut-off plastic canister. The most common oil drain. Drain carefully - watch your hands, wear gloves.

  7. Optional but very effective! Flushing the engine with a special liquid is not included in the maintenance regulations and is not mandatory - but. By getting a little confused, you will be much better at flushing out the old, black oil from the engine. In this case, wash with the old oil filter for 5-10 minutes. You will be surprised at the black oil that comes out with this liquid. This liquid is very easy to use. A detailed description should appear on the flushing fluid label.
  8. Changing the sedum filter. Unscrew the oil filter. Often, it can be unscrewed by hand. Sometimes it does not give in and you need to use a special puller. As a last resort, you can drive a screwdriver with a hammer into the filter (you should still throw it away anyway). Impregnating the filter with new oil before installation is a mandatory procedure. Lack of oil in the new filter before starting the engine can cause oil starvation, which in turn can cause filter deformation. Overall this is not a good thing. Also remember to lubricate the rubber O-ring before installation.
  9. Fill in new oil. Having made sure that the drain plug is screwed in and a new oil filter is installed, we can begin to fill in new oil using the dipstick as a guide. The level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. Also, you need to remember that after the first start of the engine, some oil will leave and the level will drop.

  10. In the future, when the engine is running, the oil level will probably change; be careful during the first few days of operation. Recheck the oil level using the dipstick after the first start.

What kind of oil to pour

If the sub-zero temperature in winter in the area where the vehicle is used can reach -30 °C, then you can use a 5W-40 standard lubricant.

There is no specific brand that produces a lubricant and has an absolutely positive reputation. The more popular the brand, the higher its price. Therefore, the driver is free to choose any of the available options.

The main thing to remember is that an advertised and branded lubricant will be more expensive than a less popular one, but which has the same properties.

Engine oil volume

The engine installed on the VAZ 2114 is a well-proven, but at the same time quite old engine solution for the car.

It began serial production in 1994 with the following characteristics:

  • Maximum power - 78 hp. With;
  • Engine capacity - 1499 cm3;
  • The required volume of engine oil per 1 ton of weight is 50 g.

Where to pour oil


Before changing the oil, you need to find a hole on the car’s engine called a “dipstick”. It is located almost under the vacuum seal, near the clutch cable.

To make it easier to find it, look at the photo on the right with the location of the dipstick. For greater convenience, you need to use a flashlight, which will greatly facilitate the search.

This dipstick will help determine the amount of liquid remaining in the reservoir. But it is worth remembering that in order to accurately determine the required volume, all measurements should be carried out when at least 10 minutes have passed after the vehicle has been parked.

If this is not the first time that the lubricant in the engine has been changed, then it is worth using the same type of lubricant as usual. It is also necessary to monitor the level of the filled liquid, since if you pour more than about 0, this will entail an increase in lubricant consumption due to its flow through the oil seal and gasket.

Another point is the location of the work. The area must be perfectly level, which will allow you to determine the exact amount of liquid drained and filled.

Replacing the filter

You need to remove the old oil filter, which is located at the rear of the engine on the passenger side. In most cases, you can unscrew it by hand, but if you cannot do this, use a special key. Otherwise, you can resort to one proven method that all experienced car owners have heard of: pierce the filter housing with a screwdriver and unscrew the filter, using it as a lever.

After unscrewing the filter, make sure that there is no rubber left in the seat on the engine, and if there is any, remove it. Pour a little clean oil (about 150-200 ml) into the new filter and lubricate the rubber gasket. Screw the filter in as far as it will go, but don’t overdo it – it’s better to do it by hand.
