The Lada Granta model range was launched in May 2011, when mass production began. The solution of the rear part of the body with a sloping rear door is beneficial for two reasons: on the one hand, there is no overlap with the hatchback from the Kalina line, on the other, the owners receive a fairly roomy body.

Not forgetting about budget restrictions, engineers and designers nevertheless made many changes, turning the three-volume body into a two-volume one. The original front bumper with black inserts made the car visually wider - a useful modification for a B-class representative with high ground clearance and a high interior. The sedan will soon get the same detail, but with one exception: the Granta in the “Standard” configuration will retain the same unpainted bumper. Side mirrors have been changed. In the top-end configuration, they were equipped with double turn indicators, as has already been done on the Priora. Later, the same mirrors will appear on the three-volume vehicle.

Against the background of a completely redesigned stern, not everyone will pay attention to the rear doors of the liftback. They are distinguished from those on the sedan by the window sill line raised by 12 mm and the upper edge lowered by 8 mm. The profile has become more dynamic, but the ceiling above the second-row passengers has dropped slightly. Looking ahead, I note that with a height of 186 cm, I did not feel any discomfort in the gallery.
Features of external and internal design
VAZ 2191 is the first car with a liftback body from AvtoVAZ, and one cannot help but note a very successful debut. The appearance is much more attractive than the sedan; the more rapid lines do not deprive the car of its elegance. New front and rear bumpers, painted in body color, have a stylish design and give the car a modern look. The liftback body has less hydrodynamic resistance than its counterparts. The clever shape of the sloping roof prevents splashing on the rear window, cleaning it with air flow. New limiters on the front doors with a fine-tuning effect, which allows you to close the doors securely and easily without effort or slamming. One of the significant advantages of this car, rightfully called a family car, is the presence of a large trunk, the volume of which is 440 liters.
The interior of the VAZ 2191 is not much different from the Lada Granta sedan, but there are a number of improvements. The seats have high-quality upholstery with decorative inserts; thanks to the elastic pile of the fabric, it better supports the driver’s back when cornering. The seats, as well as the steering wheel, can be adjusted to suit your anatomical features.
The most expensive equipment - luxury prestige - is equipped with:

The rear of the body is completely original, with the exception of the trunk floor, which was taken entirely from the sedan. During the work, there were various proposals, including the use of flashlights from the three-volume Granta. They approved another option and, in my opinion, they made the right decision. Unified optics would save pennies, because all the other elements were developed from scratch anyway. And it turned out quite harmoniously.

What is the trunk volume? If loaded “under the curtain” - 430 liters. But the sedan is indicated as much as 480 liters! Does the liftback really have 50 liters less? No! The thing is that AvtoVAZ changed the measurement method: they estimated the capacity of the sedan trunk with balls, and placed volumetric cubes in the cargo compartment of the liftback. The second method gives a smaller result, but is more correct from a practical point of view. If you use one method, the difference will be approximately half as much. Don't forget that you can fold the rear seat, and then the luggage compartment capacity will increase to 760 liters - this is more than that of the Kalina station wagon (670 liters)!
Disadvantages of the model
There are no perfect cars. You need to understand the purpose for which you are buying a car. When operating a premium car in off-road conditions, it will have no fewer disadvantages than a crossover when driving on the autobahn. The second important indicator is the price-quality ratio. You have to pay for comfort. The complexity of manufacturing, materials for interior decoration, sound insulation and other options for a luxury car will cost much more than for a budget car.
However, all versions of the Grant liftback have common disadvantages. First of all, this is very poor sound insulation of the wheel arches and especially the roof. When driving on gravel or a wet road, you get the feeling that your feet will be drenched in water, and when it rains, you get the feeling that there is a metal basin above you instead of a roof. The design of the window lifts is not well thought out, the windows do not open all the way, which is especially inconvenient when paying for parking or opening the barrier when entering a parking lot.
The noise level of the gearbox is quite high, however, this is typical for all VAZ models. The size of the digital information displayed on the on-board computer display is insufficient, you have to strain to read the values, this distracts attention from the road. Other minor shortcomings can be easily tolerated.
The Lada Granta liftback, conceived by AvtoVAZ designers as a budget family car, almost meets the ideal combination of price-quality criteria. This is certainly a step forward for the Russian automobile industry. The car has fairly good technical characteristics, high passive safety, is economical, has a stylish modern design and a very comfortable interior.

Drive with little blood
The technical content depends on the configuration of the liftback. The “Standard” version has the suspension from the previous generation of Kalina, a “long” steering rack (such cars do not have an amplifier) and minimal sound insulation. In the “Norma”, which already has an EUR and a “short” rack, the front suspension has increased caster, and the sound insulation package has also been expanded. Finally, “Lux” can boast of stiffer suspensions and the most complete set of anti-noise. Therefore, two “Grants” in different configurations turned out to be very useful in the test. There are no revelations on the Norma: the omnivorous chassis is combined with a retuned, but still far from ideal, electric booster. In addition, the VAZ team mentioned a new vacuum booster and master brake cylinder. I also did not notice any global improvements in braking.

Price categories for modifications vary slightly. True, the standard equipment is richer and allows you to move comfortably and completely safely around the city, outside populated areas.
The standard model includes a petrol 8-valve engine with an output of 87 hp. It is complemented by a 5-speed manual transmission, which works great at any time of the year.
Normally, two types of engines are installed: 8 and 16 valves. The car's power is 87 hp. and 106 hp The fuel consumption itself is 7.3 liters in mixed mode for normal, standard and luxury. The ground clearance for all three modifications is 16 cm. This figure is quite enough for comfortable driving on country roads.
The safety conditions in both normal and standard are very similar. For example, ISOFIX child seat mounts and special door locks are available in all trim levels, as they are aimed at safe driving for the whole family.
Having a standard immobilizer allows you to protect your vehicle from theft. And for normal movement on any routes, the Lada Granta Liftback configuration includes an ABS system.
The interior equipment of the cabin has a slight difference. For example, the basic version uses reinforced fabric seat coverings, while the standard version can be equipped with seats made of special automotive fabric.
The rear row in the improved models is divided; an additional external temperature sensor and time indicator are built-in. In both trim levels there is a lamp for the luggage compartment.
An addition to the standard is the presence of not only a driver's airbag, but also a front airbag for the passenger. In addition, power steering and the ability to customize the location of the steering rack allow you to reconfigure the car individually for each driver.
Another feature of the Lada Granta Liftback standard equipment is athermal glass, which does not allow the interior to get too hot while driving under the hot summer sun. Useful introductions included electric front windows, central locking, and a cabin filter.

Impatiently, I change to Lux and am not disappointed. Well, firstly, the presence of additional sound insulation is noticeable. The chassis is stiffer, but there is no discomfort. The car has become more pleasant and reliable to drive, having stopped dancing on bumps. The amplifier settings are the same, but there is no need to adjust the trajectory with an empty steering wheel. Plus there is less roll in corners. Although a couple of times I still remembered a car with a conventional suspension. True, this happened on very “dead” asphalt.
