Replacing the rear struts of a VAZ-2110 with your own hands - features, diagram and recommendations

The rear shock absorbers of the VAZ 2110 are characterized by an increased service life compared to the front struts. Typically, rear struts last twice as long as front struts. In this case, replacement of the rear shock absorbers on a VAZ 2110 is required if the following signs of malfunction appear:

  • obvious knocking in the area of the rear shock absorbers when driving on a relatively flat road and when driving over uneven surfaces;
  • when hitting even small holes, the rear axle suspension “breaks through”;
  • the rear of the car becomes less stable when cornering, braking, etc.

If necessary, you can replace the rear struts of a VAZ 2110 yourself in a regular garage. The procedure for replacing racks is not complicated, but a number of nuances need to be taken into account. Read more in our article.

Replacing shock absorbers

Tools and materials you will need

1. Straight screwdriver; 2. Special key for holding the strut rod; 3. Wrenches (open-end and ring) wrenches of sizes from 6 to 22 mm; 4. Heads sizes from 12 to 22 mm; 5. Special puller for ball pins of tie rod ends; 6. Special devices for compressing the front strut spring; 7. Rust solvent WD-40.

Replacing front shock absorbers

Front shock absorber replacement procedure:

1. Unscrew the nuts securing the upper shock absorber supports to the upper body cup in the engine compartment: 2. Release the upper supports; 3. We release the outer tie rod ends (using a special puller for tie rod ends); 4. Unscrew the bolts securing the lower part of the front strut from the steering knuckle; 5. Take out the stand; 6. Disassemble and assemble the stand; 7. We carry out assembly work.

We begin the work with the upper nut of the shock absorber rod, which can only be unscrewed using a special wrench for the rod or a 6 mm wrench. Without this counter key, the rod and nut will rotate inside the shock absorber cup. But often the “6” key doesn’t help, so it’s preferable to use the special one that you can borrow from a mechanic you know.

You should also ask the same mechanic friend for a special device to hold the strut spring during disassembly during the work. Or it could be a set of special clamps or grips. Without such a puller or set, all your work will go to waste; you will not be able to replace the shock absorbers on your VAZ-2110. After you have freed the shock absorber rod, you should release the upper support (bearing), it is held in place by three nuts on top of the body cup.

Before proceeding with the lower mount, the outer tie rod end must be disconnected from the strut. Often the ball pin of the tip is stuck, which is why you will need either a special puller, or that same WD-40 liquid and a heavy hammer. Mechanics also use a special drift made of soft metal so as not to damage the threads of the steering ball pin.

The lower fastening of the strut to the steering knuckle of the front hub axle consists of two bolts, one of which is eccentric; through it, in particular, the camber of the front wheels of the VAZ-2110 is adjusted in the car.

The freed rack is removed.

To replace the strut insert (the shock absorber itself), you just need a device or devices that will tighten and fix the strut spring in a compressed position.

Rear shock absorber replacement procedure:

1. Unscrew the nuts securing the upper shock absorber supports to the upper cup of the body in the passenger compartment (trunk); 2. Unscrew the lower bolts securing the rear shock absorbers to the rear beam; 3. Take out the stand; 4. Disassemble and assemble the stand; 5. We carry out the assembly work in reverse order.

The procedure is the same except for the need to compress and fix the spring. Using a 17 mm bent spanner, unscrew the top nut of the strut, holding the rod with a special counter wrench. Remove the spring and support washers and the upper rod cushion, and unscrew the bolt securing the strut to the rear beam from below. The stand is removed. We also inspect all rubber-to-metal connections and replace them with new ones if necessary.

After intervention in the design of the front suspension, the camber of the steered wheels of the VAZ-2110 should be adjusted. After intervention in the rear suspension design, wheel alignment inspection is not required.

What racks are better to install on a VAZ 2110? How to change struts on a VAZ 2110?

Disassembly and assembly of the unit

Replacement of the rear pillars of the VAZ 2110 is carried out on any flat area on the street or in the garage; an inspection hole is not needed here. To disassemble the unit, you need to prepare the following tools and devices:

  • jack;
  • wooden stand of the required height;
  • curved spanner wrench size 19 mm for unscrewing the rod;
  • a set of open-end wrenches of standard sizes;
  • standard plumbing tools (pliers, hammers, screwdrivers);
  • wheel key;
  • aerosol lubricant WD-40;
  • gloves, rags.

It is better to carry out assembly and disassembly work with gloves to avoid minor injuries when loosening or tightening threaded connections. Replacing the rear struts 2110 begins with disassembling the luggage compartment side of the car. It is necessary to remove the rear seat fasteners and unscrew the seat belts, as well as dismantle all interfering decorative panels. Stuck threaded connections are sprayed with universal lubricant WD-40. The further sequence of work looks like this:

  1. The upper support of the rear pillar is unscrewed. To do this, unscrew the nut using a 19 mm curved spanner wrench, and hold the rod with a special or open-end wrench. In VAZ 2112 cars it is possible to unscrew the nut with a 19 mm open-end wrench.
  2. The wheel bolts are loosened, the car is jacked up and the wheel is removed. Don’t forget to secure the car with available anti-roll bars.
  3. A wooden support is placed under the bottom of the VAZ, and the jack is released and installed under the rear wheel hub.
  4. Using 17 and 19 mm wrenches, the lower support of the rear pillar is unscrewed, the bolt is removed and it is removed together with the spring.

To replace the shock absorber, the unit will have to be completely disassembled. You will need to remove the spring, the upper support washer, the boot with the upper cover and the compression stroke buffer. Then all these parts are rearranged onto the new rack. The rubber spacer also changes regardless of whether it knocks while driving or not.

Reassembly does not cause any difficulties. Only at the beginning you need to show dexterity to bring the rod back into the upper hole. Then the lower rack mount is aligned along the holes by pressing the hub from below with a jack. The bolt is put in place and tightened, after which the rest of the assembly is done.

Sometimes old racks can be restored and can serve as a backup option in case the new ones break down. Repair of the shock absorber is possible if it has not received mechanical damage to the body, the rod is not bent, and very little oil has leaked from it. The movement of the rod must remain free, without jamming, otherwise the shock absorber must be discarded. Remember that restoration rarely gives a good effect; about half of the repaired racks fail quite quickly.

In any car, including the VAZ-2110, important elements, the main purpose of which is based on the absorption of energy transferred to the body during driving, are struts.

Both rear and front struts help reduce vibration when driving on uneven roads. And since the condition of the road surface in our country, unfortunately, cannot be called satisfactory, these elements are subjected to heavy loads, which damages the rack.

Experts under no circumstances recommend continuing to operate a car with worn struts, since the analyzed element is responsible not only for a comfortable ride, but also for safe movement. Among the most basic tasks that racks must perform are the following:

  1. Extending the performance characteristics of the vehicle's chassis.
  2. Act as shock absorbers while driving.
  3. They help create comfortable conditions for drivers and passengers, especially if the trip is on uneven road surfaces.
  4. If the repair and installation of shock absorbers is carried out correctly and the springs are installed correctly, car owners will be able to independently minimize the braking distance and prevent the body from swaying when the car bounces.

Factory components

So, in order to figure out which struts are best installed on a VAZ 2110, you should first understand why many owners of domestic cars are not satisfied with standard factory struts. After all, it is reasonable to believe that the native components created by design engineers should, like no other separately produced elements, function ideally in each specific Russian car. However, in life everything happens completely differently, and car enthusiasts are often looking for new shock absorbers for their Priora or Kalina.

The replacement is primarily due to the low endurance of factory devices. After a short time, the device begins to collapse. This happens even while driving on an almost smooth road surface, not to mention the “ideal” Russian highways

The modern car enthusiast continually drives around potholes and bumps, occasionally driving into them through negligence. This aspect “helps” to shorten the life cycle of shock absorbers by half or three times

The manufacturer installs exclusively oil struts on Priora and Kalina. This part has one significant drawback - when driving at high speed, the car begins to sway. When turning, as experienced Lada car owners note, an unpleasant feeling is created when the driver begins to feel as if the car is moving on only two wheels. Those who prefer driving faster than 100 km/h try to find a high-quality replacement for original parts.

Why do they put spacers on the rear struts?

It so happens that a loaded “ten” touches the fender liners with the reverse wheels. To increase ground clearance and solve this problem, motorists install so-called. spacers for the rear struts of the VAZ 2110, which are placed between the lower plane of the shock absorbers and the brackets of the rear yoke (beam).

With an increase in rear clearance, the following vehicle characteristics change:

• position of the RD (pressure regulator) of the rear brake circuit; • vector of the direction of light of the front optics; • castor (angular distance of the axial inclination of the rotation of the front wheelset in the longitudinal section).

If the first two positions are subject to independent adjustment, then the angular distance must be installed at a specialized enterprise.

Signs of faulty shock absorber struts

How to check how bad the shock absorber is? In fact, there is only one (correct) way - on a special vibration stand, where the computer will show as a percentage the degree of efficiency of each of your four shock absorbers. According to reviews from service technicians, even new struts for cars “just from the showroom”, this degree of efficiency can be 70-75%, and this is the norm. If 50% of their efficiency is lost, the racks must be replaced or repaired.

A “dying” stance can also be determined in this artisanal way: you need to grab the wing and swing the car to the maximum amplitude that you are capable of. When you stop these physical exercises, the wing should freeze in its original position without recoil or vibration. Secondary vibrations, even barely noticeable to the eye, after you have released the wing, indicate a malfunction of the strut.

Signs of malfunction:

  • deterioration of the shock-absorbing properties of the suspension;
  • obvious stains on the rack housings;
  • Suspension knocks when driving.

Knocks

You should approach this issue wisely, study the replacement procedure in a video, consult with specialists, and be sure to review the operating manual for your car.

Knocks occur for various reasons from the rear, so this should be looked into in more detail.

  1. If knocking noises are observed when driving on uneven ground, the shock absorbers have apparently failed. The only solution is to replace with new ones.
  2. If you see that the rubber bushings of the levers are worn out, change the suspension.
  3. When the spring settles, it must be replaced.
  4. A knocking sound is likely a sign of a loose shock absorber or worn rubber eye bushings.
  5. When the rear suspension is overloaded or damaged, knocking noise also occurs.
  6. If the bushings of the suspension arms are destroyed, the rear axle moves and a knock appears.
  7. When knocking is observed from the suspension arms, it is recommended to replace them with new ones.
  8. Knocks can also be determined by how busy the rear part is. Empty the trunk and do not seat anyone in the second row. This makes it easier to figure out what the reason is - shock absorbers or springs.

Step-by-step instructions for replacing the front struts in a VAZ-2110

Replacing the front struts on a VAZ-2110 with your own hands always involves a preparatory stage, which consists of installing the car on a flat area, preferably asphalt, so that during the repair process you can be sure that the car will not move or sit in the ground.
Belaying is carried out using wheel chocks; the handbrake must also be applied. Armed with a jack, you should jack up the VAZ-2110 and remove the wheels. Replacing the front struts is impossible without dismantling the old model, which is done in the following sequence:

  1. Slightly unscrew the M19 nut going to the shock absorber rod, then get rid of the cup cap. Gradually loosen the 3 M14 nuts that secure the posts.
  2. Now inspect the stem. It may have a slot at the top or be made in the shape of a square. Hold the shock absorber rod with a wrench, slightly “undermine” it, and pry up the nut that secures it.
  3. To avoid defects and mechanical damage, the brake hose should be routed through the bracket on the rack; this hose must be equipped with a holder.
  4. Get rid of all the nuts that secure the strut to the steering knuckle.
  5. Disconnect the cotter pin located on the nut securing the steering joint to the strut.
  6. Now that the fixing nut is set aside, use a special press used in machine repairs to remove the tip from the socket in the form of a cone.
  7. Using a bronze drift, knock out the bolts that secure the block and connect it to the steering knuckle, move it along the cheek of the strut and locate it at the bottom.
  8. Place the suspension by passing it through the wheel arch, finishing with one on the outside.
  9. Replacing the front struts at this stage comes down to clamping the resulting strut in a garage vice with copper inserts.
  10. Mount the puller that is responsible for the tie and get rid of the suspension springs.
  11. Slowly tighten the springs, making sure there is even tension so as not to damage the part. Do this until the springs no longer create pressure on the support cups.
  12. Unscrew the nut and remove all the pad parts. Replacing a damaged shock absorber with a new one will take 5 minutes, and the assembly itself and installation in the space reserved for the front struts is carried out in the reverse order.

Order of Operations

Removing old shock absorbers and installing rear struts of the VAZ 2114 and other models can be done without an inspection hole or overpass - just jack up the car. But before you lift the car, you need to remove the assembly plugs located in the trunk. So:

You need to remove the trunk shelf, bend back the upholstery and use a screwdriver to pull out the plug. The rod nuts are located under them; they need to be unscrewed and the washer and plate removed.

Now you need to jack up the car. This is necessary so that the lower rack lock is accessible. This bolt is most often tight, so it is better to pre-coat it with a special lubricant. If after this you cannot unscrew the fastener, you need to knock it out with a smaller bolt.

Now you can remove the stand, be sure to support it - it may fall. It's easier to do this if you move the end towards the rear of the car

Note! After dismantling the stand, a rubber gasket remains in the glass. It needs to be removed because the material has lost its elasticity. A new spacer must be installed, which is purchased separately from the assembly.

A new spacer must be installed, which is purchased separately from the assembly.

Now you need to remove the spacer sleeve, shock absorber cushion and bushing, remove the cover from the casing, and remove the bump stop from the rod.

You can begin installing the new unit. The rod element must be fully extended. We install the bushing, cover, its cover, and bump stop on the rack. The spacer and spring are assembled after all other parts. On a note! It is advisable to bleed the shock absorbers before assembly. This will increase their functionality and service life. The procedure is performed by turning the device over. This will allow the oil to spread evenly throughout the entire assembly.

Installation is performed in reverse order.

Then all the above operations are repeated on the other side of the machine. Difficulties may arise during assembly:

  • if the unit does not want to be placed in its normal place, you can use the jack beam;
  • if the old parts have lost their integrity, they need to be replaced, if they are in order, wipe them with kerosene;
  • if the support bearing comes out separately during dismantling, this is normal;
  • to install the spacer without any problems, you need to glue it to the spring with masking tape;
  • Some experts believe that when final tightening the fasteners, you first need to remove the car from the jack.

Which racks are better to install on VAZ 2110, 2112, 2114 and 2115 Detailed analysis

  • Oil-based, sometimes called hydraulic, are quite soft. They are well suited for people who prefer a measured, not fast ride. And also for those who, for whatever reason, often drive on dirt roads;
  • Gas ones are tougher. They prevent the car from swaying at high speeds and when cornering. But, using them on a primer quickly leads the suspension to a deplorable state;
  • Gas-oil ones have average performance between both types of racks.

  • Soft-Drive is the softest shock absorber offered by the manufacturer; in terms of driving performance, they are practically no different from the original ones. The car will still rock, but their service life will be much longer;
  • Sport. The rigidity of these racks is almost 80% higher compared to the original ones. In this regard, they perfectly hold the road. But, when traveling over bumps, the movement will not seem too comfortable to you. This line includes shortened racks designed to lower the car;
  • The X-Drives are quite rigid and do a good job. The manufacturer recommends them for use in the northern regions of our country;
  • The standard is perhaps the toughest of the entire line. The disadvantage is that the oil freezes even in slight frost. It takes a considerable amount of time to “roll out” the car.

  • EXCEL-G is a gas shock absorber strut. It uses nitrogen. As a result, the knot turns out to be quite soft. This will be appreciated by those who like a comfortable and not too fast ride;
  • Ultra SR are sports shock absorbers. With their help, the car holds the road perfectly. Possible use in conjunction with low profile tires. And also together with tires that have a radial tread pattern;
  • Premium is a hydraulic shock absorber. It is a complete analogue of the factory one. But, at the same time, it is made of higher quality materials. And what is typical, it lasts much longer.

  • Highway, these are quite rigid racks. This indicator ensures optimal cornering at high speeds. This model is popular with buyers. Not very suitable for driving on dirt roads;
  • The standard ones are distinguished by good performance, both in the heat and in extreme cold. Perfect for car enthusiasts from regions with harsh climates;
  • Comfort Optima is the most popular rack of the entire line. This is due to their versatility. They are medium hard. Therefore, they are suitable for almost any road surface and driving style;
  • Sports are the toughest stances. They are practically not intended for driving around the city. But at the same time, they perfectly keep the car from swaying in the sharpest and most dangerous turns.

SS20 devices

The Russian Lada Priora or Kalina will be perfectly suited to products from a domestic Samara company, which has been manufacturing a huge number of products that contribute to the tuning of Russian vehicles for several years. SS20 racks have an optimal price-quality ratio. To choose the right part, you need to know which shock absorbers are available in a standard version and which in a shortened version:

  • The rigid Highway unit will allow you to easily enter a turn even at high speed. It makes sense to avoid purchasing for those who constantly drive on dirt roads;
  • the Standard model is characterized by excellent performance in any weather, which is why it can become the best option for motorists from areas where harsh climates dominate;
  • The Comfort Optima variant is the best-selling product due to its versatility. It is characterized by medium rigidity, which will provide a comfortable ride on all types of roads with any driving style;
  • Sport parts naturally fall into the category of the stiffest struts. Such devices are not adapted for driving within the city, but they hold the car well even during sharp turns.

Faceted Glass Day in Russia

The history of a product is stored not only in historical facts, but also in the memories of people whose everyday life is integrally connected with it.
They drank sparkling water from it right on the street, tea on trains, for which they put a cup holder, and drank alcoholic beverages. The Soviet cut glass has become a housewife's assistant in the kitchen. It helped to accurately measure the number of grams of a bulk product or milliliters of liquid. Therefore, it is not surprising that later a date was set when the holiday of the cut glass could be officially celebrated. This is one day a year - September 11, on which the first glass came out of the Gus-Khrustalny glass factory assembly line. Although there is no documentary evidence of this fact. Russia timed this day to coincide with the All-Russian Day of Sobriety. Which can become the countdown date for giving up a bad habit for everyone.

Which stands are better?

Each car owner decides this question for himself. Some people replace the factory (or failed) struts with softer ones, because the factory ones seem too hard to them and they want more comfort. Another is dissatisfied with the factory ones, because he believes that his VAZ-2110 is too soft on them, “does not steer, does not handle, in short, the car is like “jelly on the road.” Such a buyer chooses tougher ones for himself. In sports, for example, extremely stiff shock absorbers are used, as well as thicker springs, so that the wheels do not leave the road surface during the race, even for a split second. For the sake of controllability, comfort is sacrificed, and athletes even get rid of silent blocks.

Selecting new parts

It is not difficult to purchase a rear shock absorber for a VAZ 2112; there is a fairly large selection at any auto store. The question is what type of rack to choose. There are 2 types of them:

  • conventional hydraulic (oil);
  • gas-oil (gas).

Parts of the first type are cheaper and handle road unevenness much more smoothly. When the car is operated without special loads and with a quiet driving style, oil shock-absorbing elements can last quite a long time, provided that you do not come across a fake. Gas-oil shock absorbers are more expensive and behave more rigidly, which improves car handling and is a definite plus for an aggressive driving style. In addition, they last longer when used under increased loads.

To avoid purchasing low-quality products from unknown manufacturers, you should choose products from brands that have proven themselves on the roads of Russia:

At the same time, it is necessary to take into account that products of these brands are most often counterfeited in underground workshops. Therefore, it is better to buy parts from official sales representatives of these manufacturers. The same applies to VAZ 2110 springs, which sometimes change due to shrinkage from loads.

If there is an obvious malfunction of one of the shock absorbers, it is recommended to replace both elements.

There is no point in changing them one by one; you will only waste money and time on replacement. Using an old rack together with a new one will cause rapid wear of the latter. A “bad” part will handle irregularities much worse than a new one, which will put a double load on it. An exception is a situation where, for various reasons, a new shock absorber installed recently has failed. Then it makes sense to replace only it.

Hydraulic, gas or gas-hydraulic

Our client is left with three types of shock absorbers, each with its own positive and negative features. The hydraulic springs have a two-tube coaxial design filled with oil. When the piston moves, oil is forced from the inner tube into the outer tube. This is a more developed and reliable development. Advantages of oil shock absorbers:

KEY-DOP

  • price. A long-used development allows manufacturers to significantly reduce production costs;
  • greater smoothness;
  • short length;
  • less damaged by external influences;
  • low internal pressure - as a natural result, there is no need for painstaking sealing of the rod;
  • performance with some loss of oil.

There are also disadvantages:

  • bad cooling. Due to the design (pipe in pipe), they overheat under enormous loads, which leads to deterioration in the maneuverability of the machine. Cavitation - the formation of gas bubbles mixed with oil, increases the load on other parts of the car's stabilizing system, allowing for accounting (software), and rapid wear of shock absorbers and suspension failure;
  • a sharp decrease in maneuverability at high speeds. The reason is the slow response of the shock absorber;
  • at low temperatures they become hard;
  • unnoticeable decrease in performance. The gradual deterioration of technical characteristics is not so noticeable to the driver - painstaking monitoring of the condition of the shock absorbers is required;
  • great inertia. The slow reaction of the rod movement does not allow for excellent damping when driving on bad roads.

Hydraulic twin-pipe front strut shock absorbers are much better suited for measured, even driving on solid roads. They provide greater comfort in the cabin with a smooth ride, but are not suitable for driving on bad roads and extreme driving.

Which racks are best to put on Lifan Solano.

Another type is gas struts (springs). The working fluid here is gas. The design is single-pipe, the gas is under significant pressure (up to 20 bar).

First, about the pleasant things:

  • the highest degree of maneuverability at all speeds and on virtually any surface;
  • no cavitation effect;
  • best cooling;

Of the negative properties, we note:

  • highest price. The complexity of design and production increases the cost of gas shock absorbers;
  • they are longer;
  • huge shock loads on the car body. If you have an old VAZ, then installing gas struts is not recommended;
  • a low level of smoothness of movement means comfort.

Gas struts are the choice of those who love high-spirited driving, off-road driving and extreme driving.

In gas-oil shock absorbers, in addition to the working fluid (oil), there is naturally also a compensatory body - gas separated from the water by a floating piston. Springs of this type have the following distinctive features:

  • no cavitation;
  • up to 20% shortest braking distance;
  • small angle of inclination when turning;
  • reducing the effect of aquaplaning;
  • not bad cooling;
  • reliable and durable - requires infrequent replacement;
  • decent ride properties.

Negative points include:

  • highest price;
  • it may be necessary to replace the springs with weaker ones;
  • possibility of damage to the housing and jamming of the piston.

  2. To increase the force, use wrenches with a long handle. You can use an extension made of steel pipe.
  3. When working with stuck fasteners, do not use ratchet handles or torque wrenches. First, “break” the jammed nut with a regular wrench.
  4. When working on suspension components, do not tighten fasteners immediately. Tighten the nuts lightly and lower the vehicle to the ground (without a jack or supports), then apply final tightening using a torque wrench.
  5. If you do not have enough experience in carrying out such work, take photographs of the disassembly process. This will help to correctly assemble the unit after repair.

Removing and replacing the front shock absorber strut of the VAZ 2110

The time comes when the front struts of the “tens” work out their service life, and then such products must be removed and replaced with other, serviceable parts. The process includes the following steps:

  1. We place the car on a level surface, put stops under the rear wheels, turn on the parking brake and use a special key to loosen the upper fastener of the shock absorber rod.
  2. We dismantle the hub, after which it is time to remove the steering rod with ends. After this, we dismantle the shock absorber as a set.
  3. Mark the position where the adjustment bolt is located.
  4. We sequentially dismantle the upper and then the lower fasteners.
  5. We put the removed fasteners next to the workplace.
  6. We move the steering knuckle to the side, allowing the rack to move freely in a vertical plane.
  7. We dismantle the upper fasteners and release the shock absorber included.
  8. We place the tensioning mechanism on the suspension springs.
  9. We disassemble the shock absorber strut and replace defective elements.

The actual process of dismantling and installing this tens suspension element takes about an hour.
