Life hack: spark plugs for Priora - fault diagnosis, replacement, price

When buying spark plugs for a Priora with a 16-valve engine, they usually create a reserve for themselves so that they can install a new one immediately after one of them becomes faulty. If you manage to start the car with one faulty spark plug, then failure of the remaining parts will result in the car refusing to start.

In general, let’s immediately dispel the myth that 8-valve engines require some other spark plugs for a Priora car. In 16th grade, like in 8th grade, the same is given. Changing the spark plugs on a Priora is easy; in this article we will tell you how to do it, but that's all: The price of components for a Lada Priora car is not high - so I advise you to change them more often. To avoid more serious repairs. Because, having acquired carbon deposits from bad fuel, this will affect the engine by friction. Priora, like other cars, requires attention. Replacing oils and components.

Thinking about which spark plugs are best to install on a Priora, many refuse to believe in the miraculous power of analogues, installing only standard parts in their car, because the manufacturer swears that they will not harm the car. But every time a car owner sees the painfully familiar color of soot, he prepares to replace the ignition elements. I will say the following - on a Priora, a lot depends on gasoline and even driving style. It will be healthier to refuel at a good gas station, but that’s not all. You need to drive the car not only sluggishly, but sometimes give it a normal load. Moreover, it is better to do this periodically.

There is nothing difficult about changing the spark plugs in Priora yourself. This is a routine operation that is comparable to replacing headlight bulbs. It is recommended to check the gap between the electrodes from time to time. It is better to look for spark plugs for Priora in advance. When purchasing a set of elements for a Lada Priora car with 16 valves, try to compose it from the same models - so that there are no differences “in the row”.

Basic faults

The time has come to explain why it is worth carrying a certain supply of candles with you for the Priora. Don’t even store them in the garage or at home, but put them under the trunk lid so you don’t have to worry about anything when a critical situation occurs. When the “spark” doesn’t go after a hard day at work, you definitely won’t be eager to walk to the nearest auto parts store.

You can determine the malfunction of the Priora spark plugs by the following signs:

  • Starting the engine is difficult (that is, the starter rotates, the fuel-air mixture is supplied inside the chamber, but there is still no spark; the engine will start if you turn the starter for a long time).
  • Fuel consumption has increased (there may be several reasons for this phenomenon, but if at least one more reason from the list appears, it is worth inspecting the ignition unit).
  • The proportion of carbon monoxide coming out of the exhaust system has increased.
  • The engine power has decreased (this is especially noticeable during acceleration - there is no usual “traction” and good acceleration).
  • The engine is misfiring, which means one of the cylinders is not working - simply because “its” spark plug did not give a spark, the mixture did not ignite.
  • Usually the spark plug is changed every 15,000 km (for many this is one year of driving with their favorite car), but they can be “flooded”. This is a more serious problem that will take a little longer to deal with.

What does carbon deposits on spark plugs indicate?

The first picture shows a working candle with a little soot. A small deposit on the insulator and electrodes may be caused by bad or poorly functioning PVN (armored wires), a rich mixture or an ignition delay

The second picture shows a candle with a brownish-yellow soot; sometimes there are candles with a glossy insulator without soot, as if polished. The reason for this may be the use of fuel with a high octane number that is not suitable for the car.

If overheated, the spark plug will have a white insulator with small black deposits and premature electrode erosion. The reason for this may be ignition advance, or a spark plug that is not fully wrapped.

If the spark plug electrode is melted or partially deformed, this indicates premature ignition. This leads to loss of engine power, as well as rapid engine wear.

Manufacturers and prices of analogues

It is not always possible to find a standard set of spark plugs for the VAZ-2170 in the nearest stores. Therefore, you can install four new parts, in accordance with the number of cylinders under the hood. The choice of elements, thanks to other manufacturers, has become more diverse:

  • Bosch (manufactured in: Russia) au17dvrm. Price – about 250 rubles per set;
  • Denso (Japan) w20epr. Price – 140 rubles per piece;
  • Brisk (Czech Republic) lr15yc. Four pieces – 300 rubles;
  • NGK (Japan) bcpr6es. One piece – 150 rubles;
  • NGK (Japan) bcpr6es price per unit – 200 rubles;
  • Bosch (Germany) fr7dcu. One piece – 100 rubles;

The advantage of iridium or platinum spark plugs is their service life, which is longer than conventional spark plugs. If conventional spark plugs require replacement after 30 thousand km, iridium spark plugs can last up to 60-70 thousand km.

After purchasing spark plugs, we recommend checking them. You can do this yourself, if you or someone you know has the device, or in a car service center at a special stand.

Replacing spark plugs for a Lada Priora car with 16 valves

To replace spark plugs on a Lada Priora car, prepare a special socket wrench with a “10” head.

Priora is a car sensitive to the gap in the spark plug, this can affect fuel consumption and traction. For 16 cl motors, a gap of 1 cm is measured by the factory. It is important to check the gap between the electrodes before installation.

This is usually checked with a round probe that looks like a coin. Of the Russian coins, only 10 kopecks more or less fit this role - their thickness is 1.25 mm. This gap will increase as the engine runs.

Remove the negative voltage from the battery, and then put the car on the handbrake so that nothing interferes with the work. Replacing spark plugs on a Priora is done in 5 steps, see them below:

  1. remove the plastic casing;
  2. unclip the wire block clamp, disconnect them from the ignition coil;
  3. remove the coil mounting bolt, then pry it off with a flat screwdriver and remove it;
  4. there is a candle in the well - this is what is needed now. Remove it using an extension cord.
  5. put a new part in place of the old one.

Instructions for replacing spark plugs on a 16 cl engine

So, if we are replacing spark plugs on a 21126 engine, then before removing the plastic decorative cover, it is necessary to remove the absorber purge valve from it. The photo shows that the valve simply lifts up and moves out of the way.

Remove the absorber purge valve

Next, remove the plastic decorative cover and see in front of you 4 ignition coils, which are mounted on spark plugs. To get to the spark plugs you will need to unscrew all the coils.

Removing the decorative cover

We disconnect the plugs from the coils, and using the E8 sprocket, unscrew each of them. We take them out of the block and you can start replacing the spark plugs. For a 16 cl engine, the spark plugs come with a “16” thread, so we take a 16 wrench and carefully unscrew each spark plug. If the replacement is made for the first time, the spark plugs may “go tight”.

Disconnect the pads from the ignition coils

Unscrew the coils

We take out the coils

We take out the spark plugs and install new ones. They should be tightened first by hand, so as not to damage the thread, and only then with a wrench.

We take out the old ones and install new spark plugs

The tightening torque for the spark plugs on the Priora is 25–30 Nm. There is no need to pull the thread too hard

After replacing and tightening all the spark plugs, install the ignition coils and reassemble in the reverse order. Look at the old candles, we have already written above about their soot and what it can mean.

Which spark plugs are best for Priora/Kalina/Granta?

If you have problems with the engine (for example, the engine is difficult to start, troits or jerks), then you should start looking for the problem with the spark plugs. Not only the cold start of the engine, but the operation of the engine as a whole will depend on their quality. Do you know what spark plugs to put on Priora/Kalina/Granta?

Recommended spark plugs for Priora/Kalina/Granta . The manufacturer recommends using domestic spark plugs A17DVRM and A15DVRM or their imported analogues. Depending on the engine model, different spark plugs are used. For example, spark plugs on a Priora have 16 valves: AU17DVRM, and for 8 valves: A17DVRM. The price of spark plugs depends on the manufacturer and region. Approximate cost 200-500 rub. per set.

Types of spark plugs . Spark plugs can vary in the number of electrodes: single-electrode (standard), multi-electrode. And also by type: Regular (standard), iridium, platinum. The manufacturer recommends using conventional single-electrode spark plugs for VAZ.

The service life of spark plugs depends on operating conditions. In accordance with the maintenance regulations for Lada Priora, Kalina and Granta cars, spark plugs should be changed every 30,000 km. However, in some cases (for example, when starting the engine in severe frost), new spark plugs can be damaged by filling them with gasoline. Advice: do not throw away old candles, but use them in such cases.

By the way, the owners of the tenth family of VAZs in the survey “which spark plugs to install” identified the best spark plugs: NGK, Denso and Brisk. And the review/test of spark plugs by ZaRulem magazine identified other leaders:

Instructions for replacing spark plugs on an 8 cl engine

Unlike a 16-valve engine, there is one module (ignition coil) on an 8-valve engine, and not on each spark plug, so the process of replacing spark plugs here is less labor-intensive.

Remove the plastic decorative engine cover, if present.

We remove the PVN (high-voltage wire) tips from the spark plugs. To avoid confusion, you can replace the spark plugs one by one.

Remove the tips from the spark plugs

To prevent dust and dirt from getting into the candle well, we clean the area next to the candle.

Using a 21 mm spark plug wrench, unscrew the spark plug, take a new one, screw it in and tighten it. Before installation, you can check the spark plug gap. For injection cars, it should be 1.0-1.1 mm.

The tightening torque of the spark plugs is 30-40 N*m.

After replacing all the spark plugs, check whether you have connected the PVN correctly; if so, you can start the engine and check the operation of the spark plugs.

NGK V-Line spark plugs have a unique V-shaped notch on the center electrode, which allows the igniting spark to jump to the outside of the electrode, where the air-fuel mixture accumulates in large quantities.
