How to determine it yourself

In this case, it is necessary to measure the value A, which indicates the distance between adjacent holes. It can be measured using a regular ruler or more accurately using a caliper. Having received the value of this value, you can easily determine the desired diameter, which is designated as B.

The bolt pattern parameters are the same for most models. In this regard, you can use disks from one model to another. It is very important to observe this parameter; the quality of installation and fastening of the wheels depends on it.

What to consider when choosing

If you choose a size R less than 14, then there is a possibility of reduced ground clearance. If R is greater than 17 inches, friction between the wheel and the vehicle body may occur when driving on uneven surfaces. It must be remembered that the larger the diameter of the disk, the smaller its profile. And this affects the absorption of road irregularities and leads to rapid wear of the suspension.

Recently, there has been a trend towards installing lower profile tires on wheels with R larger than 16 inches. This leads to the fact that the width of the tire increases, that is, the offset of the disk decreases, since the wheel must be moved outward from the center to avoid friction with the body. This gives the car a more sporty look.

The choice of wheels for a car must be approached with all responsibility, not forgetting that the comfort, driving safety and reliability of the car depend on it. And the sporty look of 16 or 17 wheels is more suitable for the summer version.

What kind of wheels are installed on different versions of the car?

Each Skoda car model provides for the installation of wheels with certain sizes depending on the size of the diametrical and center holes. This means that the disks have clearly defined dimensions.

Wheel sizes do not depend on the body shape. For different vehicle configurations and year of manufacture, there are standard wheel options from the Skoda manufacturer itself and acceptable replacements. They have different characteristics and their own designation.

Disk marking includes constant and variable parameters. Let's look at its decoding using an example for the Skoda Rapid Active 5J x 14 ET35. PCD 5100:

• 5J – rim width 5 inches with profile shape “J”,
• 14 – rim diameter in inches, a very important parameter for tire selection,
• ET35 – the offset value is 35 mm, must be correctly selected so that there is no friction between the wheel and the suspension,
• PCD 5100 – bolt pattern with disc fixation with five bolts at a distance of 100 mm.

What wheel size to choose for Skoda of different models

When choosing a wheel size for a Skoda car, you must take into account the parameters and requirements of the manufacturer.

By deviating from the standards stipulated in the technical documentation of the car regarding the installation of wheels and tires, the car owner dooms himself to problems related to safety precautions.

For each Skoda car model, there are requirements for choosing the wheel size depending on the parameters of the diametral and center holes, bolt pattern, and tire pressure.

Skoda Yeti - wheel and tire sizes

In 2009, the Czech company presented a compact crossover car – the Skoda Yeti. At the Geneva Motor Show, a crossover based on the Volkswagen A5 was demonstrated. It is also worth noting that the platform and engine on the Yeti were taken from the Volkswagen Tiguan.

The Czech crossover is equipped with R16, R17 rims. The wheel bolt pattern is 5×112, and the center hole is 57.1 mm. Thus, Yeti is equipped with rims and tires with the following indicators:

• 0J PCD 5×112 ET45 TsO57, 1;
• 0J PCD 5×112 ET45 CO 57, 1.

Fans of large rims can use the R18 with a 5x112 wheel bolt pattern, 8.0J ET43 diameter and 57.1 centering hole. As for the factory tire parameters, the Yeti offers the following sizes:

• 205x50xR17;
• 205x55xR16;
• 215x60xR16;
• 215x55xR17.

Fans of larger wheels can use 225x45xR18 tires. The tire pressure on the Skoda Yeti should be 2.4 bar.

Wheel size on a Skoda Rapid car

The Skoda Rapid car model is considered one of the oldest in the world. Since Czech manufacturers began producing the first series of these cars in the 30s of the last century. At the moment, manufacturers produce 3 modifications of Rapid.

In the line of the Czech brand, this model is located between the Fabia and Octavia cars. On the domestic market, the Skoda Rapid is presented in four trim levels (Active, Style, Ambition, Entry) and with three engine options:

Turbocharged engine with a volume of 1.4 liters and a power of 125 hp. and robotic automatic transmission DSG:

• tires 215x45xR16;
• wheels 7J 16ET35.

If we are talking about choosing car tires for the Skoda Rapid, then it is worth taking into account the standard sizes of the wheel rim. Most often, car enthusiasts prefer to choose tire sizes for Rapid:

• 225x45xR17;
• 205x65xR16;
• 195x65xR17.

At the same time, car tires of the following brands are in demand: Michelin, Pirelli, Nokian, Alutec. It is also necessary to select wheels depending on the season of operation of the vehicle. Standard disk sizes

On a Skoda Rapid car you can install wheels with different characteristics - diameter, width, offset, bolt pattern (drilling), central hole, adhering to the standards set out in the technical documentation. Among these parameters there are constants and variables.

Constants are key and are maintained on all modifications of the Skoda Rapid. These are the first things that should be taken into account when choosing disks. This:

• Bolt pattern - the number of bolts for fastening the disk and the diameter of their location. Bolts in the amount of 5 pieces are located around a circle with a diameter of 100 mm,
• The diameter of the hub, the value of which is 57.1 mm.

Variable parameters change on different versions of the car, they are set by the manufacturer and may have replacement options recommended according to the instructions for the car. These include:

• rim diameter in inches (denoted by R),
• rim width in inches,
• offset in mm – the distance from the mounting plane to the plane of symmetry of the disk (written after the letters ET).

The offset can be zero, negative or positive. It is calculated by the developer with such precision as to ensure the necessary stability and controllability of the vehicle, as well as minimal load on the hub bearings.

What wheel sizes does the manufacturer recommend to install?

The Skoda Rapid NH Facelift 2022 1.6MPi 90 is equipped with 5Jx14 ET35 rims and 175/70 R14 84T tires as standard. Where:

• 5J - rim width in inches;
• 14″ — tire diameter in inches;
• ET35 - disc offset in millimeters.

The vehicle tire marking 175/70 R14 is deciphered as follows:

• 175 — profile width (cross section of the tire) in millimeters;
• 70 - profile height as a percentage of its width;
• R - radial cord winding;
• 14 is the tire diameter in inches.

In addition, information about its load capacity and speed parameters can be printed on the rubber - load index and speed index. The load index is a two- or three-digit number; the speed index is indicated in Latin letters, for example 84T:

• 84 - maximum permissible tire load 500 kg;
• T — maximum permissible vehicle speed is 190 km/h.

Using the recommended tire sizes will help you avoid problems with handling, safety and other difficulties. What non-standard sizes can be supplied? Refer to the table; it indicates possible acceptable alternative sizes for tuning. Although there are other options that we have not described in the table. For example, wider discs of the same diameter. Or install wheels of the same width, but with a larger diameter, which is quite popular among car owners. The choice of discs is huge; you can find copies with the same parameters, but with an overhang 1-2 millimeters more or less. It is not possible to list all the options.

At the same time, the bolt pattern for all types of wheels is the same - 5x100. Thus, all disks are fastened with five bolts and the distance between them is exactly one hundred millimeters. The car's hub diameter is 57.1 mm.

Standard tire pressure is 2 MPa.

Parameters of standard nuts

The bolts that secure the discs are made of zinc-plated steel. They have standard dimensions of diameter M14, thread pitch 1.5 mm and a 19mm socket head in the form of a nut.

The length of the bolts can vary depending on the type of disc: for stamped discs it is 27 mm, while cast discs are secured with bolts 29 or 33 mm long.

When installing fasteners, tightening must be done in order of diagonally located bolts. The bolts should be tightened in several steps to avoid distortion. After installing the fasteners, caps are put on them to protect them from dirt and dust.

The influence of tire pressure on vehicle safety

Important! Beginners to the driving profession should not ignore their responsibilities for monitoring tire pressure, even if they have special equipment with the ability to send signals (icons) on the device about problems with tires.

It’s not for nothing that an experienced driver, before getting into the car, visually checks the condition of the stingrays, sometimes even tapping them with the toes of his shoes. Tire pressure is important:

• to ensure safe operation of the car. Tires with low or high pressure can cause accidents;
• due to deterioration in vehicle controllability;
• because the tires will wear unevenly.

A fairly common phenomenon, especially for Russian operating conditions of the same Skoda Rapid, among the driving fraternity is the unbridled desire to slightly reduce the tire pressure, supposedly in order to increase driving comfort and thereby reduce vibration loads on the suspension elements.

However, again, there are no simple solutions for which there is no need to pay. The thing is that reducing the tire pressure by even one hundredth MPa from the parameters recommended by the factory leads to:

• to increased fuel consumption;
• to rapid wear of the outer sections of the treads;
• to reduce vehicle maneuverability.

At the same time, there are no less problems from overly pumped wheels, where the central parts of the treads are subject to very rapid wear. But such stingrays are most dangerous in hot weather, when they can simply explode while moving.

What kind of disks can be installed?

Wheel rims for modern cars are made of steel, aluminum and light alloys, used to improve strength and performance characteristics. Depending on the method of manufacturing wheels for cars, you can choose from three main options:

• Welded steel parts are stamped parts with high weight, low strength and, accordingly, low price. They are more susceptible to corrosion and deformation than others, but can be repaired. Dented rims can be straightened and returned to working order at a workshop.
• Light alloys are cast and forged, have high strength and anti-corrosion properties. Presented on the market with a variety of design solutions in a modern style. Cast ones do not bend under load, but immediately crack and cannot be repaired. Forged ones can withstand almost all impacts without deformation. The cost of cast and forged wheels is significantly higher than welded ones.

The manufacturer produces several models of stylish alloy wheels of different sizes for its Skoda cars. Below, as an example, a number of names and their designations are presented.

Maximum and minimum acceptable sizes of non-standard disks

Before purchasing non-original wheels for Skoda, you must first select wheels according to the method of their manufacture: forged, cast or stamped. Next, based on the type of engine and year of manufacture of the car, make a selection of disks using the table, which presents Skoda sizes and their analogues. The main parameter when choosing wheels for a Skoda Rapid is the bolt pattern, which must strictly correspond to that set by the car developer.

It is 5x100 mm for all wheel modifications. Based on this indicator, other disk parameters are selected. The developer recommended minimum and maximum variable sizes.

Variable indicators must correspond to those specified for Scoda Rapid and have the following values:

• disc diameter from 14 to 17 inches,
• width from 5 to 7 inches,

Discs

Just for Rapid, the Skoda team noticeably limited the possible options. As original, in all trim levels, the following are provided:

• 6.0J x 15 inches.

But in the initial versions they are stamped steel, and in the top version they are light alloy cast. The budget-friendly steel wheels are covered with Tecton branded decorative caps.

Also, light alloys can be installed as additional equipment, in which case one more size is possible:

• 6.0J x 16 inches.

In the standard size of 15-inch wheels, 3 options of alloy wheels are offered for an additional fee, 2 Alaris and Matone.

The 16-inch ones are presented in 2 variants of Stratos, or rather, one, but in different colors, black and silver.

What disks can be installed?

In practice, non-standard wheels with sizes from 14 to 17 inches are also installed on Rapid. However, in this case, in addition to problems with warranty service, it is worth taking into account the change in the car’s behavior on the road.

On high tires, the car will lose precision control, reactions to turning the steering wheel will become “smeared”, reminiscent of problems with worn steering.

Low-profile tires on 17-inch wheels are suitable if the vehicle's driving range is limited to ideal asphalt. In potholes, the sidewalls of such tires are often damaged, and weakly damped impacts from the road quickly wear out the suspension.

If the overall rolling radius of the wheel increases, you have to pay in terms of dynamics, and if it decreases, the ground clearance (ground clearance) also decreases. Regarding the choice, cast or stamped wheels, the former are better in terms of performance properties, the latter are cheaper and more repairable.
