Turn signal switching circuit (relay)
Before identifying possible problems in the system that allows the turn signals to function, it is worth getting an idea of all its components. First of all, these are, of course, light bulbs.
Then the relay, which is designed only to operate the direction indicators. Switching device along with a safety valve, as well as a special button for activating an alarm.
As for the function of the relay, it is with its help as a switching element that, during the operation of rotary devices, both the lamp is turned on and off.
The relay is activated when it receives data that a short circuit has occurred in the circuit. The signal comes in this case from one of the pointers. It comes from both the rotary switch device and the button designed to turn on the hazard warning lights.
- Thus, when the desired section of the circuit is closed, the functionality of certain light bulbs is ensured. The relay device can be located in different places.
- If on new generation cars it is installed directly in the mounting blocks, then its place in the Lada model is determined behind the dashboard.
- Fastening is carried out with a special ring. It is screwed to the car body using a nut.
- It is assigned the function of mass, the reason why it should always be in a cleaned state. In other cases, the mounting point is a vehicle side member.

- As for the alarm button in case of a possible or real emergency, it is designed to connect all the lamp devices that are present in the turn signal system. The contact group connects all wiring, not excluding those coming from the ignition switch.
In the circuit, the individual elements are connected by “ground” - electrical wiring together with the body of the car.
Using a safety device, the housing is protected from the possibility of short circuits. The fuse has a fusible insert element. If the temperature increases when the current increases, it breaks the circuit, creating the necessary protection for the circuit from the possibility of fire.
How does the Lada Kalina transmission work?
The first generation cars were equipped with a VAZ-1118 manual gearbox, which, like all front-wheel drive manual transmissions, was a deep modernization of the ancient 2108 gearbox from the Soviet VAZ. Since the appearance of the first G8, which we talked about here (What a G8 looks like), its transmission has not undergone any major alterations, retaining not only the advantages, but also the disadvantages of the original unit. Therefore, the problem of lever vibration is unique to this family, including more modern cable gearboxes, but does not affect robotic and automatic transmissions.
The gear shift mechanism of such a box consists of:
- lever (handle, handle);
- backstage;
- drive traction;
- gear selection mechanism inside the gearbox.
When the driver moves the lever to engage a particular gear, the latter moves the rocker, which converts these movements into rotational or reciprocating action. The rod connected to the rocker transmits these influences to the gear selection mechanism, which, in accordance with them, moves the gearbox forks, including the clutch of the required speed.
Common reasons why turn signals do not work
Before you begin diagnostics or repair work, you should take care to disconnect the battery terminal with the minus sign.
Most often, malfunctions can be as follows:
- There is a click in the relay, but the lamp does not light. That is, the turn signal is working properly. The cause may simply be a burnt out light bulb. First, the lamp mount is unscrewed, and then the connector is disconnected to replace it;
- The lamp flashes quickly, which means that it does not meet the power characteristics. It is worth cleaning the contact connections at the same time. Less commonly, the cause is a faulty relay device that requires replacement;
- The problem lies in the relay, if the lamps do not blink, but simply light up. The reason is closure. The relay is changed in such cases;
- If the indicators on only one side are lit, it means that the relay device is changing. However, the cause may be a button, which is checked and, if the contacts burn out, appropriate actions are taken. Quite rarely, the switch device may be the cause.
