Why did oil appear in the air filter on the 16 valve VAZ-2112: causes and repairs

Most motorists check the air filter of their “iron horse” extremely rarely. Such a check is carried out, as a rule, only when the car’s engine begins to openly “play around”, or there are obvious signs of a malfunction of this filter.

It can be very difficult for an inexperienced driver to explain how the lubrication system and the air filter are connected. In fact, everything is quite simple: the crankcase gases that form during the operation of the internal combustion engine may well enter the channel through which air is taken. When fuel burns, these gases are not completely removed from the cylinders, which may be due to the following reasons:

  • coking of car engine systems;
  • wear of sealing rings;
  • operational wear of the motor.

Any of the phenomena mentioned above leads to the fact that a certain volume of gases cannot escape. This leads to the formation of excessive pressure, which causes the destruction of the seal. Leaky and faulty oil seals do not cope with their direct tasks, which is why oil begins to get into the engine.

Reasons for the appearance of oil in the air filter and its housing

Air filter that has absorbed oil

If we take the normal condition of the car, then the air filter must be dry throughout its entire service life. But the presence of oil indicates that there are problems in the mechanical part of the engine. Therefore, we will not consider problems in the electronic control unit, since this part has nothing to do with it in this case . So, let's look at the reasons for this effect:

  1. Compression.
  2. Adjustment of valves.
  3. Crankcase ventilation.
  4. Additives.
  5. Catalyst.

Once the causes have been considered, you can move directly to methods for solving problems, in the order in which they might occur.

Solution methods

The main reason where the problems lie is the valve stem seals. It is through them that the oil enters the pipe, which squeezes the lubricant onto the filter. First of all, it is necessary to replace this particular element. Of course, there are quite a lot of reasons besides valve seals, so it is necessary to dwell on each separately.

Air filter in oil compared to new and clean

Compression drop

A loss of compression may cause traces of oil to be visible on the air filter element. The problem can be corrected quite easily - a small tube with a diameter of 1 mm extends from the brood pipe near the crankcase. It often gets clogged, which causes a drop in compression. Next you need to clean it and put it in place. If you put your finger to the tube and feel that it is being sucked in, then you need to adjust the valves.

The process of measuring engine compression

Adjustment of valves

A fairly common cause, along with valve stem seals, is incorrect valve clearance. A characteristic sign is the appearance of bluish smoke from the exhaust system. To eliminate the malfunction, a simple adjustment of the valve clearances is necessary. This is quite simple and not difficult to do.

Valve clearance adjustment process

Crankcase ventilation

One of the reasons for the appearance of oil in the car air filter is the oil level is higher than normal or its poor quality . So, at an increased level, the crankshaft creates foam, which enters the rest of the system through the ventilation pipes, especially the air filter element.

Oil in the air corrugation that goes into the filter

In order to solve the problem, it is necessary to check the oil level; if it is higher than normal, then the residual amount must be drained.

Also, we unscrew the clamps of the crankcase ventilation pipes and change the tubes. Often everything is replaced because cracks or oil contamination occurs. Blue or black smoke from the exhaust indicates that in addition to the fuel mixture, excess oil is also being burned in the cylinders, which releases soot. It is this that settles and clogs the walls of the crankcase ventilation pipes.

A clogged crankcase ventilation pipe is one of the reasons for oil in the air filter

Additives

Additives are the most controversial issue in use today. There are two opinions: the first is that they improve engine performance, the second is that they have a detrimental effect. So, what's the truth? The truth is that both opinions are half correct.

Thus, the use of additives on an engine that requires major overhaul will actually delay this process due to the formation of a film on the cylinder walls. But! For a functioning engine, this may seem disastrous, since the use of additives leads to disruption of the gas distribution mechanism, and therefore oil will accumulate in the corrugation and air filter, and also disrupt the circulation of crankcase gases.

All kinds of engine oil additives

Catalyst

The catalyst is located in the exhaust gas exhaust system. If the car experiences floating speed, a drop in power, or the engine is difficult to start, then you need to check the air filter to see if there is oil there. This is what can cause failure or destruction of the catalyst.

It is the destruction of the catalyst that can cause oil to appear in the air filter. This is caused by poor ventilation and hoses clogging with soot . You can simply remove the catalyst, or replace it, and clean all the pipelines.

Crankcase valve

One of the factors why the air filter is in oil is the failure of the crankcase ventilation valve. The idea is that the crankcase valve is connected to the air intake pipe via a rubber hose, which uses the engine's natural vacuum to prevent excessive pressure build-up. The valve must be replaced every time the car undergoes maintenance, but not everyone follows this rule and pays attention to it only after the engine begins to openly act up. This malfunction allows oil to pass through the valve, thereby contaminating the pipes and, directly, the filter.

In most powertrain assemblies, the crankcase ventilation valve can be removed by yourself . After dismantling, you should shake it, if you do not hear the characteristic crack of the check valve, this means that it may be the culprit of the oil leak. After replacing the PSV valve, the functionality of the entire system should be checked, usually this is done within 500-1000 km.

Oil in Priora Air Filter Causes

Oil in the air filter : cause, elimination, prevention

into the air filter and often recognize oil particles that get inside only during a scheduled or emergency replacement of this element. However, if the air filter detects oil , the owner must then find the cause and fix the problem.

Oil can also accumulate in the corrugation leading to the filter.

Why does oil get into the air filter?

The main reason for liquid entering the element:

  • When fuel burns in the engine, it produces gases that enter the crankcase. Oil in the air filter. Why? And also the reasons. When a car engine is running properly, gases escape through the cylinders and into the outside environment through the exhaust system. Oil in the air filter: what is the reason and what to do? However, if the engine is faulty or wear is 50-60%, gases enter the air filter and carry oil particles that settle on it.
  • If the piston rings need to be replaced, oil enters the crankcase, ventilation duct and air filter.
  • If the hose used to supply oil is clogged, it is directed into the air filter along with crankcase gases.
  • This can also clog the nipple. In this case, the oil moves along with the crankcase gases.
  • A clogged filter can allow oil to enter the filter. Air filter oil problem. Oil in the air filter of VAZ 2109 2112: why does it get there. Causes of oil. Self-healing methods. Insufficient air enters the vehicle system, causing engine problems.
  • High engine pressure and a dirty exhaust system cause gases to accumulate in the sump in the crankcase and engine, which pass through all pipes, including the air filter and supply oil there.
  • The cause is often worn fillings. In this case, engine oil consumption increases.

conclusions

We figured out why the air filter may end up in oil and what needs to be done in this case. It is important to remember that if oil leaks into the air filter, in most cases the problem lies in the condition of the engine, and troubleshooting cannot be delayed. It is also recommended to inspect the air purifier more often - this procedure will take a few minutes, but you will be able to notice a malfunction in a timely manner and take the necessary measures.

Almost every vehicle owner sooner or later encounters a situation where oil appears in the car’s air filter. This problem occurs especially often in cars with significant mileage, in which the engine is not in the best technical condition. Of course, new cars will not have this problem! But if your mileage goes beyond 200 - 300,000 kilometers, then anything can happen. In general, for those who already have oil, and for those who just want to know, this article...

THE CONTENT OF THE ARTICLE

Let’s try to figure out what reasons lead to lubricating fluid getting into the car’s filter system and what consequences may arise from this. To begin with, guys, I would like to note that these are often really complex breakdowns, so you need to operate the engine correctly, namely, pour good oil and it is advisable to change it more often. Also, use only proven fuel, do not pour “surrogate” at strange gas stations.

How to identify the causes of oil leakage and eliminate them?

A competent motorist will first measure the compression of the car's engine to make sure it is operating normally. The compression values of individual cylinders should be approximately identical (the maximum range of values is one atmosphere). In cases where the spread is higher, the engine should be repaired. If the compression is approximately the same, most likely the hoses through which gases move (crankcase) are clogged. They simply need to be cleaned and then rinsed thoroughly.

As a temporary solution to stop oil from entering the filter, the following scheme can be proposed:

  • disconnect the hose supplying gases from the crankcase from the filter fitting;
  • we turn off the fitting;
  • We remove the crankcase ventilation using a longer hose below the engine.

This solution will give you the opportunity to drive the car a little more. But, of course, repair work should not be postponed - choose the time and take it seriously.

Greetings to all. Please give detailed advice. The thing is that I changed the oil 3800 km ago, filled it with Genesis 5-40, filled it with 3 liters. I decided to check the oil, the dipstick turned out to be dry. I'm panicking

Physical wear of piston rings

The most unpleasant reason for a car owner why the air filter is in oil is wear of the piston rings. Each piston has an O-ring that prevents oil from entering the combustion chamber when moving up and down. If the ring is deformed, the oil will certainly get inside the chamber, where the process of ignition and combustion of the fuel occurs.

A classic sign of worn piston o-rings is a cloud of blue or black smoke when the engine starts and runs.

Worn piston rings can be detected by performing a compression test on each cylinder. This is done by removing the fuel pump fuse and the wire from the ignition to the distributor. A compression tester is then installed in each spark plug fitting. Once installed, an accurate reading will be achieved after the motor has been operated at least six times. The process is repeated for each cylinder. If any of them indicate a low injection level, add a small amount of oil to the corresponding spark plug hole and perform the test again. If compression increases after applying oil, then the piston ring of this cylinder is critically worn and this is the primary source of oil getting into the air filter.

To eliminate this problem, it is necessary to replace the outdated piston rings, which in itself is very difficult and will require dismantling and disassembling the engine. This work is quite labor-intensive and can only be performed efficiently by highly qualified specialists.

If it is not possible to carry out repairs immediately, it makes sense to constantly monitor whether there is oil in the air filter and, if dirty, change it immediately. This will make it possible to maintain engine performance until repair work is carried out and prevent further damage.

How to avoid the problem (prevention, prevention)

Here are the basic preventive rules that will help avoid a situation where the appearance of oil in the air filter is associated with a malfunction of the elements of the cylinder-piston group:

  • Do not miss the deadline for replacing fuel and lubricants. If the manufacturer recommends changing the engine oil every 15,000 km, it is better to change it even earlier, after 10,000 - 12,000 km. This will help to avoid risks associated with the operating mode of the vehicle, seasonality, and the quality of the lubricant;
  • Always change not only the oil cleaner, but also the air cleaner at the same time as lubrication;
  • fill the fuel tank only with high-quality fuel from trusted manufacturers;
  • Buy only certified engine lubricant.

By observing these simple requirements, you can not only improve the quality of the internal combustion engine, but also increase its service life. Additionally, a universal oil trap can be installed on the crankcase gas supply line. This part is inexpensive, but can provide guaranteed protection against lubricant getting into the filter element.

conclusions

The appearance of oil in the air filter of the 16-valve VAZ-2112 can be caused by many factors. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly monitor and check the condition of the air filter, since its operation will determine how efficiently the engine operates.

Drivers rarely check whether the air filter is in order, although this should be done periodically, even if there are no engine malfunctions yet. And during a scheduled replacement, having taken out the cleaner, they are surprised - how did the oil turn out to be in the air filter, because the lubrication mechanism is not connected to the air supply system. But such a connection can arise; it appears as the power unit wears out.

Main reasons

Similar malfunctions can occur in the engine design of a motorcycle, scooter, walk-behind tractor, and even a regular lawn mower. But since we have an automobile site, we will talk specifically about cars.

There are several reasons for the occurrence of these symptoms.

Most often, motorists are faced with the following factors:

  • the oil deflector drain becomes clogged;
  • piston rings are stuck;
  • rings wear out or become deformed;
  • exhaust gas exhaust hoses fail;
  • these hoses simply become clogged;
  • the air filter itself becomes dirty;
  • There is a confluence of several factors.

Engine oil on the air filter is a serious symptom that indicates damage to important components or their incorrect operation.

Now we should briefly go through all the reasons considered. Usually they are observed one at a time. Although it is possible that 2-3 factors simultaneously led to a similar problem. During testing and diagnostics you will be able to understand this.

Topic: What to do if oil is thrown into the air corrugation

If you are faced with this problem, do not immediately panic))))!! One day I came for diagnostics, (the engine was not working), the master was picking at something, checking, and eventually got to the air intake corrugation, took it off and said, the capital work needs to be done. Everything was driven by the engine. I was upset of course (((But I was confused by the amazing facts)))) the car drives very well, does not smoke, the compression is excellent, everything is normal, I was wondering how it was like this ((((( . why do repairs, in general I started looking answers to this question. After studying. so to speak)))) I took off the cover (valve) cleaned everything there, put a fuel filter in the breather hose, IT DID NOT HELP. Well, I still think, I’ll drive until I get up! I drained about 200 grams of oil, and here is the result)))) I’ve been driving for 2 months now, everything is OK. If I weren’t interested, I would have made some capital ((((I personally know two who were scammed((( DON’T LET YOURSELF BE DECEIVED. I hope I helped you in some way)))))

Re: What should you do if you throw oil into the air corrugation?

It also happens that it’s time to change the oil caps, in this case you will also throw oil, and draining 200 grams will not help. But thanks for the advice.

Yes, the caps can, but won’t it smoke?

Added: 2012-08-30 13:12:31

You can check the caps; when you change gears, blue smoke will be emitted from the exhaust pipe))))))

Re: What should you do if you throw oil into the air corrugation?

Now I’m starting to worry. The car suddenly began to smoke, although the engine was running smoothly. Fuel consumption was normal, now I can’t tell if it’s eating oil or not, only 2 thousand since it was changed. The smoke is very acrid, almost bluish. I would be grateful for any help. Yes, I almost forgot, when cleaning the throttle assembly, I also found oil in the corrugation.

How to replace the air filter on a Lada Priora - instructions

For Priora, this is an ordinary “consumable”. You need to know its location and be able to replace it, because this is the simplest operation for maintaining any car. To replace the air filter in question, you only need to follow a few steps:

  1. Open the hood. Find the black plastic box to the right of the engine; this is the housing. For your own convenience, you can remove the negative terminal from the battery and remove the wire block from the mass flow sensor (mass fuel flow sensor).
  2. The air filter housing cover is secured with four screws - unscrew them with a Phillips screwdriver and remove the cover.
  3. Slightly move the corrugated air duct and remove the used consumable. Do this carefully: it is held in place by a rubber seal, so all movements should be smooth. Even if it seems clean and you don’t want to change it, do it: all the dust and dirt will not be visible to the naked eye.
  4. Vacuum the housing housing from sand and dust. Insert the new part tightly in place of the old one, making sure that the rubber is adjacent to the plastic casing.
  5. Place the cover and tighten the four screws. Connect the wire block and the negative terminal to the battery.

Now the fuel-air mixture will contain fewer dust and dirt particles. Priora will again be dynamic, fuel consumption figures will be encouraging, and the engine will not suffer any damage from the operation of the new consumables.

I cleaned everything when I was repairing it, the air flow sensor is still alive, I’m surprised. There are also suspicions about the valve cover (seporator).

VAZ 21114, door 1.6, 16 class. From the very beginning of operation, oil appeared in the air duct. I immediately thought about the “separator” (oil scraper), and it clogged it. The mileage is already 145 thousand, the engine is 5+

The problem is a hundred pounds in the oil scraper, small splashes of oil penetrate through it into the air duct. And you immediately overhauled the engine for the man. But the problem is in the little things

It appears that the mesh on the valve covers leading to the breather is clogged. I had a similar problem

Greetings. You say there was a similar problem? When you cleaned the mesh, did the problem go away?

for 8 valves for 16 meshes no no

At 16 there is a type of separator, with small holes. They also coke well.

Oil seed caps cost 150 rubles! If you have experience in plumbing, I think you can do it yourself! At our work, such a procedure costs 4500 rubles!

did you remove the valve stem seals yourself?

Yes, on Prior a couple of times!

and please tell me the algorithm for replacing them

You take off the head, dry out the valves, without a special puller for the caps, take a long 11mm head with an extension, put it on the cap, stuff it, and pull it off with a movement from right to left! That's it in a nutshell

Is it necessary to remove the timing belt?

Certainly ! it is necessary to remove the Cylinder Head! In short, take it apart until you can see the piston when you look under the hood!)))

I’ve never encountered a timing issue where the marks can then be set. I disassembled a regular 8-valve valve without any problems

Well, since I came across 8 class, I think 16 class will not scare you, the same thing, only two stars and a different rollt! So with today’s technologies (INTERNET) you can do anything, unless of course your hands are completely undermined!)))

No way! If you take it apart, write me and tell me how!))

yeah, got it, well, I’m planning on doing it later in the spring, I guess, thanks

You take off the head, dry out the valves, without a special puller for the caps, take a long 11mm head with an extension, put it on the cap, stuff it, and pull it off with a movement from right to left! That's it in a nutshell

Have you heard about the lace? I only heard, but never tried, you bring the cylinder to TDC, thread a string through the spark plug and dry it out so as not to throw off the head

Damn, this is honestly the first time I've heard of it. This is from the series that one super master told me that in 25 minutes he changed 4th gear without removing the gearbox completely, leaving it to hang only on the drives))

Well, you can’t make a box that quickly, but with a valve it looks like reality, if anyone tries it, they can tell you about the result

Oil in pipe

Check the condition of the oil scraper rings. When the engine operates for a long time, especially under increased loads and slipping, soot accumulates on the rings. The use of various additives can also give this result. Compression rings burn out and stick in the grooves. The internal pressure increases, and oil leaks appear on the pipe inside and even outside. In this case, everything needs to be cleaned and the seals replaced.

Check for the presence of an oil trap in the corrugation. It looks like a set of thin plates or maybe a version of small meshes. In the off-season, the draft in the pipe worsens when you put the lid in the winter position in warm weather and vice versa. To eliminate this drawback, you can install an additional oil separator from Opel, the price of which is around 500 rubles and it works well on a VAZ.

Compression

A thin tube extends from the outlet pipe closer to the crankcase. It has an internal diameter of about a millimeter and clogs quickly. Clean it, then do not connect it, but put your finger on it at idle. You should feel how it is attracted by the rarefied air. If this does not happen, then you need to adjust the engine valve stroke.

The adjustment instructions are complex and require special tools and skills to carry out this work. It is difficult for an amateur to cope with such a task on his own. Therefore, it is better to remove oil in the VAZ 2112 air filter by adjusting the compression, preferably in a specialized workshop. You can find a related video, but it won't answer all your questions.

On engines with 16 valves, the power is greater due to the increased compression ratio, so oil practically does not appear in the air filter of the VAZ 21124 due to weak compression.

Adjustment of valves

If the reason for oil getting into the filter, and from there through the carburetor into the combustion chamber, is due to improper valve adjustment, then when operating at high speeds, the exhaust gases will appear blue in color, and at idle a turquoise tint.

It is necessary to remove the engine from the car frame, open the cover, wash everything and look at the valves. During operation, they gradually wear out, losing their correct shape, and gaps form where they slide along the cylinder. The valves are ground in using a special paste.

You should not use diamond lapping paste, since solid dust particles are not completely washed off and will destroy the surface of the valve head and cylinder when the engine is running. After this, everything is washed with gasoline, assembled, and the gaps are set using a feeler gauge.

Crankcase ventilation

Oil can collect in the bellows of the VAZ 2112 air filter due to poor crankcase ventilation. All hoses must be checked. The valve cover has holes from which tubes extend. One goes to the corrugation on the side. The second, widest one, extends near the location of the dipstick to check the oil level.

Most often, the third, thinnest hose, running from the valve cover to the throttle, becomes clogged. It is this that often causes problems with air ventilation in the crankcase. As a result, oil accumulates in the corrugation of the air filter of the VAZ 21124 and other similar models.

If the small crankcase ventilation channel is clogged, the oil is squeezed out through the breather into the flame arrester and begins to burn due to the high temperature. This can be seen by the bluish or black color of the exhaust gases. When oil burns, it releases soot, which comes out.

Oil in the VAZ 2112 air filter pipe can accumulate if its level in the engine is elevated. The easiest way to check this is with a feeler gauge. In this case, the consumption of lubricating fluids remains normal and the leaks in the air filter are small.

Additives

Additives are designed to improve oil quality. In theory, they always make the engine perform better. In practice, their use is ineffective and many experts from the domestic automotive industry consider it harmful. Additives should complement the quality characteristics of the oil if the engine requires major repairs, but there is no way to do it. But their use can lead to oil accumulation in the air filter, since crankcase circulation is disrupted and the hoses become clogged with soot.

Clogged hose or gas outlet

Very often, due to untimely oil changes, it becomes excessively viscous and is unable to perform the functions assigned to it. As a result, it is possible to detect oil in the air filter pipe. If the oil is not changed promptly, deposits will form in the channel or hose, preventing the free movement of lubricant from the top of the cylinder head down to the crankcase, which creates increased pressure that can push the oil through the ventilation valve.

If oil is thrown into the air filter due to a coked hose, you should remove the worn oil as soon as possible, wash the engine with a special product and fill in new oil. In some cases, additional flushing or replacement of the hose channel may be necessary.

Diagnostics

If on a carburetor or injector oil is thrown into the air cleaning device and the entire filter is in lubricant, the car owner needs to diagnose the problem. First of all, we recommend checking the functionality of the filter device itself. The service life of the element is 10-15 thousand kilometers, while the service life is affected by the pollution of the city in which the car is used. If the filter mechanism is relatively new, it is necessary to diagnose compression in the cylinders of the power unit.

This is done like this:

  1. First, check the valve clearances. If necessary, adjust them.
  2. Start the car engine and warm it up. To obtain more accurate compression data, the temperature of the power unit should be about 70-80 degrees.
  3. Stop the engine and open the hood. Disconnect the high-voltage wires from the spark plugs, and then unscrew them with a special wrench. When dismantling, the spark plugs will be hot, be careful and wear gloves.
  4. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the fuel pipe. To prevent fuel leakage, turn it off.
  5. Find the location where the ignition coil is installed in the car; you need to disconnect the central cable from it.
  6. Now the compressor itself must be installed in the spark plug socket. Diagnostics of the pressure parameter is carried out on each cylinder separately. The check starts from the first cylinder.
  7. Help from another person will be required. The assistant needs to sit behind the wheel and turn the key in the ignition for the starter to start working. There is no need to start the internal combustion engine. When the crankshaft is cranked, diagnostic results will appear on the compressor pressure gauge.
  8. The readings obtained must be recorded on a sheet. The checking procedure is carried out on each cylinder in the same way. If the power unit is operating correctly, the minimum compression parameter will be about 10 kg/cm2. The discrepancy between different engine cylinders should be no more than 1 kg/cm2. If diagnostics have shown that the compression level in some cylinders is better than in others, then most likely the reason for the release of engine fluid lies in poor fit of the internal combustion engine valves to the seats. The problem may be worn compression rings or poor cylinder head gasket seals.
  9. If the diagnostics show that the pressure in each of the cylinders is different or is less than the optimal parameter of 10 kg/cm2, the engine requires a major overhaul. It is necessary to perform a more detailed check of the engine operation. It will be necessary to grind the valves, change the piston rings or cylinder head gasket.
