The most common and relatively inexpensive sedan from a domestic manufacturer is the Lada Granta and its basic version. According to the tasks of AvtoVAZ, this car was supposed to act as a replacement for the Lada fifth and seventh models, which had already become a classic of the Russian automobile industry. Especially the Standard package.
This Lada Granta car is the basic one in the line of new sedans produced in Togliatti. The first copies began to go on sale at the very end of 2011. At first, its cost was 229,000 rubles. This was the basic version. However, from April 1, 2012, it increased by 10,000 rubles. Then AvtoVAZ representatives said that the price increase was caused by inflation. But some experts are of the opinion that the rise in price is primarily due to the high demand for this brand of car, what is included in the car and what are its characteristics?

The official presentation to the general public of the new Grant should take place at the Moscow Motor Show, which opens at the end of August this year. In addition, the manufacturer is preparing another version of the Lada Granta City, which will appear in the near future.
The cheapest standard version of the Lada Granta is the most popular among buyers. Its important qualities are simplicity and ease of use.
Unlike more expensive assemblies, the “Standard” model does not have additional comfort or safety systems. But it is great for daily commutes and long family trips.
Vehicle positioning
Here a question may arise about the positioning of the Standard package. This car is as simple as possible and it is well bought by people over 30 years old.
Everything is as simple and effective as possible
The simplicity of the design and familiar components from previous models make it possible to service the car yourself. Many car owners are used to this.
Dimensions and power parameters of the standard Grants
The inexpensive Lada Granta standard equipment includes dimensions that fully correspond to other cars from this series. The length of the body is 426 cm, the width is 170 cm, and the height is only 150 cm.
The wheelbase of the car is 247.6 cm, the front and rear tracks are 143 and 141.4 cm. The trunk volume holds as much as 520 liters, which allows the car owner to transport fairly large cargo. The gas tank volume is 50 liters.
The power plant in the Lada Granta standard equipment is an 8-valve engine with a volume of 1.6 liters. The engine power is 80 hp, and the engine runs on 95 grade leaded gasoline.
Fuel consumption for the modification is about 7.6 liters in mixed mode and about 10-11 in the urban area. The car is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. The maximum vehicle speed can reach 165 km/h, and acceleration to 100 is 12.6 seconds.
Prospects
These are the main configurations of the Lada Granta, but the VAZ concern did not stop there. Observing the sales of Granta, manufacturers came to the conclusion that the experiment was a success, and it is slowly displacing even Kalina from the market. Many en masse work as taxis and for the official needs of their employees. Therefore, the Lada Granta 2013, which can be equipped in Standard, Norma and Luxury formats, has acquired a hatchback modification. This is already a completely modern car, which is systematically taking its place on Russian roads. Young drivers, and especially women, fell in love with the Granta for its elegance and style.
Additional installations and features of interior equipment Grants “Standard”
The initial equipment of the Granta Standard cabin is quite modest, but this in turn is a kind of advantage. The buyer, if desired, will be able to ideally re-equip the vehicle for personal use and supplement it with everything necessary.
When purchasing from a car dealer, you can find out the cost of all installations and their availability. And since the price of the car itself is quite small, with a minimal investment you can buy everything you need and even re-equip it yourself. The most popular modifications among new owners of the standard equipment are the following:
1. Passenger handrails.
2. Central locking.
3. Airbags.
4. Anti-theft alarm.
5. Lamp lamps for the rear row and trunk.
6. Rear seat headrests.
The car is initially equipped with ISOFIX child seat mounts and special latches for locking the rear locks. Additionally, the standard Lada Granta equipment to provide increased protection includes an immobilizer that allows you to lock the vehicle systems. The vehicle is equipped with daytime running lights.
The rear seats have a common design without a 40:60 split, and a special automotive fabric with increased strength and wear resistance is used as a cover for the seats. Like all other models in this series, there is a sun visor for the driver.
Popularity
In general, it becomes clear that the Lada Granta has firmly taken its position in the automobile market, and in the coming years it is unlikely to be supplanted by another domestic car. VAZ’s pricing policy is slowly changing, and the simple “Grants” package is becoming cheaper. In addition, the most economical car enthusiasts buy a car directly from the manufacturer’s factory, which allows them to save about fifty thousand in their wallet. At the end of 2013, the Lada Granta, along with such a car as the Hyundai Solaris, was recognized as the most popular car of the year.
Transmission
Three types of gearboxes have been developed for Lada Granta FL cars: - mechanical - automatic - robotic
The five-speed manual transmission causes virtually no complaints from most users and is installed on cars with an engine of 87 and 106 horsepower.
An automatic transmission is only available with 98-horsepower engines. This is the gearbox that most owners of Lada Vesta family cars dream of, who, for lack of a choice, are forced to travel with a robotic gearbox.
The robotic gearbox is available on cars with engines of 106 horsepower. It is too early to judge how reliable this box is, however, given the experience of Lada Vesta car owners, it is worth thinking several times before purchasing a car with this mechanism on board.
Ease of driving
All the best developments and traditions of AvtoVAZ in the field of ensuring the comfort of Lada cars are reflected in the new Lada Granta. Each of the 5 passengers in the cabin will have enough space and will not feel “squeezed.” The ability to fold the rear seats in a 2/3 ratio will significantly increase the luggage compartment.
For ease of driving, the Lada Granta is equipped with the following options:
- Multimedia system with touch screen;
- Effective interior ventilation and heating systems operating almost silently;
- Shelves and compartments for storing small items;
- Larger exterior mirrors for maximum visibility;
- A heating system for the front seats and air ducts extending to the feet of the rear passengers;
- Robotic automatic transmission with sensitive settings and very soft gear shifting.
In addition, thanks to new engine mounts and improved sound insulation, driving is virtually silent.
Security measures
The safety of the driver, passengers and pedestrians for the new Lada Grant is also not an empty phrase. The car more than meets all modern domestic and European requirements. This is expressed in the following options:
- Reinforcement of the body for the safety of those in the car;
- Seat belt tensioners;
- Seat belts for rear seats;
- Headrests;
- Daytime directional lights;
- Anti-lock braking system and power assist for emergency braking;
- Safety dashboard;
- Thoughtful shape of the front of the car to ensure pedestrian protection;
- Stability control system.
Impression from the salon
Since there is no variety of textures in the interior, the details are in a basic black color, it looks gloomy. But it doesn’t look repulsive, if only because it’s well assembled. AvtoVAZ was finally able to get away from crooked gaps and terrible build quality. The situation has changed dramatically for the better.
Look at the gaps, the quality of the fit - nothing sticks out anywhere, everything is in its place. The most important thing is that if previously there were a huge number of complaints about all sorts of squeaks and squeaks in the car interior, now there are none. This directly indicates that the build quality has improved.
There are no head restraints in the rear. There is no lighting for passengers or handrails in the interior headliner. The front seat backs have no pockets. The back of the rear sofa is indivisible and reclines completely.
Lada Granta in the Standard configuration is currently the cheapest car on the Russian market. Moreover, there are simply no analogues in this price category. The set is as simple as possible. It contains only the very minimum that is necessary to move from point A to point B, nothing more.
What do you think of this package? Maybe you think something should be added or removed from it.
Heart failure
Granta has been produced since 2011; the editorial machine rolled off the production line in 2012. Its engine is the simplest - an eight-valve engine with a lightweight connecting rod and piston group. The only bells and whistles are air conditioning and electric front windows. An excellent option for checking the extent of progress over seven years of life. We pitted two brand new Grants against the editorial worker - a sedan with a manual transmission and a liftback with an automatic transmission.
Simultaneously with the restyling, AVTOVAZ switched to “plug-in” 1.6 engines. New pistons will no longer come into contact with the valves in the event of a timing belt break. Welcome to the “non-stick”: the editorial sedan showed us the consequences of a broken timing belt. And the point here is not in saving on maintenance, but in the quality of components.
Reliability? It is unlikely that replacing the pistons had any effect on it.
The traction and power characteristics have not changed. The basic eight-valve engine with 87 horsepower is surprisingly peppy - it’s enough for the city. If the car is not heavily loaded, it will not fail on the highway. For trips with the whole family and with a full trunk, it is better to take the 16-valve version with 106 hp. - all other things being equal, it is only 15,000 rubles more expensive.
Granta found herself in a privileged position relative to Vesta. I'm talking about the updated robotic gearbox version 2.0 with accelerated gear changes, “creeping” and “winter” modes. For Vesta, such a robot is available only with a 1.8 engine, but it is already installed on the 106-horsepower Granta 1.6.
I haven’t driven the robotic Grant yet, but I believe that the gearbox setup is not fundamentally different from West’s, and therefore I won’t dissuade you from this option.
And I drove a car with a classic Jatco four-speed automatic transmission to my heart's content. It is still paired with an intermediate 98-horsepower engine. The Japanese gearbox and the VAZ engine have developed a friendship: delays during switching are minimal, the electronics quickly understand what the driver wants. This is the best power unit from the entire Grant range. But it’s a bit expensive: the surcharge for a robot is 30–40 thousand (depending on the configuration), and for a manual transmission it’s 55–65 thousand. Imported oats are expensive these days!
The updated Granta is noticeably quieter, even taking into account the “crickets” that have multiplied in the editorial machine over the years. Improved sound insulation appeared several years ago (our sedan did not get this) - first on cars in top trim levels, and later on all Grants and Kalinas. But restyling also made its contribution. Now there are felt fender liners in the wheel arches, which reduce the level of noise penetrating into the cabin.
