When the vacuum regulator spring is weakened, at low and medium loads the ignition timing increases.

If air is sucked into the cavity where the spring is located (if the diaphragm is damaged), then the ignition timing will decrease at low loads. Like a centrifugal regulator, a vacuum regulator is usually checked for serviceability using a synchronograph.
