How to decipher error codes on Nissan and perform vehicle diagnostics

Qashqai 1st and 2nd generations are equipped with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive (4WD). The complexity of a modern car means that the car owner cannot keep track of the correct operation of all components and devices. To help him, a self-diagnosis system has been created. For example, if a problem with the SRS system is detected, a corresponding code appears. This is why it is so important to know what Nissan Qashqai error codes indicate. The fault can be read through the OBD I diagnostic connector located under the steering column. It is also displayed by flashing the Check. In order for the car to perform self-diagnosis, it is necessary to carry out the following manipulations:

  • turn on the ignition;
  • wait 3 seconds;
  • press the gas 5 times, each for 5 seconds, and release the pedal;
  • wait 7 seconds and turn the gas to the floor for 10 seconds.

If everything is done correctly, the check icon begins to flash; as soon as this starts to happen, the gas pedal can be released. This is how the procedure has looked since 2016.

Nissan Qashqai errors on the dashboard

The fault code consists of five values - a letter and 4 numbers. The letter indicates the type of defective system. For example, P - about a malfunction of the transmission or variator, or a breakdown of the catalyst. The second is about the specifics of the error. Third - about the type of breakdown. And the fourth and fifth are the serial number of the malfunction. You can read the code using a special scanner.

Every time you start the car, it undergoes self-diagnosis, as evidenced by the exclamation mark in a yellow triangle burning on the dashboard.

Car diagnostics

Of course, without checking the vehicle, reading codes and decoding them is in principle impossible. Therefore, today you will learn how to diagnose your Nissan on your own and how to correctly decipher code combinations in order to correct them in the future.

Nissan Qashqai car

Before you start checking your car, you need to know where the corresponding connector is located in your Nissan. To do this, you will need to refer to your Nissan owner's manual. In most cars, the diagnostic connector is located on the left side of the dashboard under the steering wheel. It may be hidden by a plastic cover, so to get to it, remove the cover with a screwdriver.

  1. To begin, turn on the ignition and pay attention to the dashboard. If you are sure that there are malfunctions in the system, and the Check Engine light does not light up, then you need to check the functionality of the light diode.
  2. Open the diagnostic connector and connect the IGN and SNK clamps with a jumper.
  3. Wait two seconds and remove the jumper. So the system went into diagnostic mode.
  4. Now you need to start the engine. The Check Engine and ECU lights will flash on the instrument panel. The breakdown combination itself in this diagnostic mode will be presented in two-digit form and is determined by the blinking of the lights. First you will see the LED flash for 0.6 seconds: this means tens. Next, the lamp will blink for 0.2 seconds. Eg? code 24 will be represented by a double flash of 0.6 seconds duration and four single flashes of 0.3 seconds duration.
  5. Then repeat the procedure of closing the jumpers on the diagnostic connector again. Wait a few seconds and remove the jumper. This way you can read the next fault combination.

Diagnostic adapter for checking Nissan

Please note: when diagnosing yourself, you may have an incomplete picture of breakdowns. A more accurate check of a vehicle for breakdowns can be done using specialized equipment. In this case, you will need a computer or laptop, a special adapter that will need to be plugged into the diagnostic connector, and software. This procedure can be carried out at a service station: of course, you will have to pay for this service, but you will know exactly what the problem is.

Removing Qashqai errors

If the system fault is resolved, it becomes necessary to reset the fault. To do this, you need:

  1. As soon as a code indicating an error appears, hold down the gas pedal for 10 seconds and wait for four zeros on the odometer.
  2. Turn off the ignition.

To reset the code in the control unit's memory, you need to disconnect the battery for 10 seconds.

If the airbag error appears, you need to:

  1. Insert the ignition key.
  2. Press the brake and hold it in this position until the end of the procedure.
  3. Turn the key.
  4. Wait until the icon goes out.
  5. Turn off the ignition immediately.
  6. Wait 3 seconds.
  7. Repeat steps 3 to 6 three times.

How to check?

One of the main reasons to diagnose a Nissan car is the illuminated Check Engine icon on the instrument cluster. To read error codes, either a special scanner is used, connected to a connector in the vehicle’s on-board network, or a special self-diagnosis system. Deciphering Nissan error codes will allow you to identify the failed unit and carry out repairs.

On some Nissans, for example, the Sunny model, owners are unable to enter self-diagnosis mode. To read errors on them, an ELM scanner is used, which is inserted into the diagnostic connector. Error data is transmitted to a regular laptop or smartphone.

Auto Selection 24 RF shows in this video the diagnostics of a Nissan Murano.

Reading errors in self-diagnosis mode

Launching the diagnostic mode on the Nissan Primera P12 is done as follows:

  1. Turn on the ignition and wait 3 seconds.
  2. Press and release the gas pedal 5 times within 5 seconds.
  3. 7 seconds after the last press, fully press the gas pedal again and hold it for 10 seconds.
  4. If everything is done correctly, the Check Engine icon will start flashing on the Nissan Primera P12 instrument cluster.
  5. Release the gas pedal.
  6. The blinking icon indicates error codes in four-digit format. The first digit of the code is shown in long flashes, followed by the digits of the second character, etc., which are shown in short flashes. There is a 2 second break between the display of numbers. The number of flashes is equal to the value of the number in the error code, except for the number 0 - it is indicated by ten flashes. If there are several errors, they will be displayed sequentially.
  7. You can reset errors by pressing the gas pedal for 10 seconds while remaining in diagnostic mode. The Check Engine icon will show code 0000.
  8. Turn off the ignition.

For example, error code 1514 (open in the engine idle speed control signal circuit) will be displayed as:

  • 1 - one long flash, then a pause of almost 2 seconds.
  • 5 - five short flashes with an interval of 1 second, after which there will be a pause for 2 seconds.
  • 1 - one short flash and a pause for 2 seconds.
  • 4 - four short flashes every 1 second each.

Error codes are read in the same way on the following Nissan models:

  • Tiida;
  • Almera H16 and Almera Classic;
  • Laptop;
  • Ixtrail;
  • Qashqai;
  • Teana;
  • Murano;
  • Navara.

The video (author Nikolai Nikolaevich) shows the procedure for reading errors on a 2007 Nissan Tiida.

On the earlier Nissan Primera P11, the procedure for reading errors is different:

  1. Simultaneously press and hold the daily mileage reset and clock settings buttons.
  2. Turn on the ignition and release the buttons.
  3. Self-diagnosis will start, during which the speedometer, tachometer and fuel level needles will simultaneously move from the minimum reading to the maximum and back.
  4. The error code is displayed on the odometer screen by pressing any button on the combination - the first press shows the software version, the second will display the error codes directly on the screen.

It should be remembered that engine errors on P11 are not read this way. Another procedure is used for this:

  1. Turn on the ignition.
  2. Open the cover of the fuse box in the driver's left foot area.
  3. Place a jumper in the diagnostic connector between the IGN and CHK contacts. On pre-restyling P11s, it is necessary to close the rightmost contacts in the top row. On restyled P11 144, the leftmost and rightmost contacts in the bottom row of the block are closed.
  4. After two seconds, remove the jumper.
  5. By flashing the Check Engine light, you can determine the error code. Long flashes give the first character of the code, short ones - the second. The number of flashes corresponds to the meaning of the symbol. On the restyled P11 144, the error codes will already be four-digit.
  6. Turn off the ignition.

On a right-hand drive Nissan Winroad, equipped with a mechanically driven gas pedal, errors are also displayed by closing the pins in the diagnostic contact. The connector has a slightly different appearance.

Nissan Qashqai: check engine light comes on - how to clear the error

If you have diagnostic equipment, determine the reason for the appearance of the icon. Depending on the specified code, the action plan will develop. If you erase the error without taking specific steps to eliminate the causes, the check icon will reappear.

Modern scanners

Launch CReader V
Car scanners are devices whose task is to detect a malfunction. The electrical appliance market offers devices designed for a specific car brand. There are also universal options.

Control over the engine is provided by the OBD-II standard, with which the popular Launch CReader V device works. Text information about problems is displayed on the LCD display, and the scanner can also create graphs. Thanks to this, the driver monitors the parameters of the internal combustion engine (for example, air consumption when the engine speed changes). Users note the cost of the auto scanner, accuracy, and intuitive interface. The disadvantage is that it is limited to the specified standard.

ELM327

Cheap diagnostic devices of Chinese origin are more often found under the name ELM327. The prototype was developed by an American company and is designed for professional diagnostics. Chinese analogues connect to smartphones or PCs via a USB port or via Bluetooth. Among the advantages of the scanner are an abundance of diagnostic programs for devices based on Windows OS, Android and IOS, low price, and ease of connection. The downside is the amateur level software. The device is also unsuitable for recoding a car's ECU.

Autocom CDP Pro

Another device is the Swedish prototype Autocom CDP Pro and its cheap Chinese analogues. Clones are not inferior to the original in terms of the abundance of diagnostic functions; difficulties arise when updating the software (Chinese updates, so diagnostic efficiency is reduced). An easy-to-use scanner, as users note, often breaks down.

Common error codes starting with the letter C

This indicates that problems have arisen with the chassis or chassis as a whole.

C1130

There are several problems from which the following error may appear on the Qashqai screen:

  • failure of the engine control module;
  • malfunction of the ABS drive or ABS computer;
  • lack of signal to the CAN bus;
  • fuse failure.

C1143 - malfunction

Evidence of a breakdown of the wheel speed controller. The reason may be a poor sensor connection.

S1111

Lights up if there is increased voltage to the exhaust air temperature sensor.

S1210

Appears if the ABS exhaust valve is broken and requires replacement.

Qashqai J11 chassis error: settings

If the car refuses to drive at a speed after 30 km/h, then most likely there are problems with the engine. This is a designation for various breakdowns associated with the power plant of a car with a CVT since 2014. Additional diagnostics are required.

Nissan Primera check light is on: how to clear the error

The icon on the dashboard lights up when a serious breakdown occurs in the electronics of the vehicle’s power plant. There could be a lot of reasons for this - the indicator does not indicate a specific problem. To understand what exactly happened, you will need to enter self-diagnosis mode or use diagnostic equipment. Next, you need to find and eliminate the cause of the breakdown and only then perform a reset.

Group B faults

This letter in the code indicates that the car owner has encountered a malfunction in the operation of Airbag airbags, power windows, door locks and other body components.

B1049 - error

The airbags are faulty. First of all, check the contact of the system sensors.

B1054 - Qashqai code

It indicates damage to the cable located under the upholstery on the steering column - check it with a multimeter. The airbag icon often lights up along with the error number.

Reset Qashqai airbag error

This is especially often required for modifications of 2007-2008 with a 2 liter engine. If such an error appears, to remove it you need to:

  • insert the ignition key;
  • press the brake and hold it in this position until the end of the procedure;
  • turn the key;
  • wait until the icon goes out;
  • immediately turn off the ignition;
  • wait 3 seconds;
  • repeat steps 3 to 6 three times.

To prevent the situation from recurring, it is worth checking the connector under the passenger seat. Perhaps there is a loose contact there.

State of Health (SOH) - state of “health” of the battery

This indicator, which I already mentioned above, demonstrates the battery’s ability to accumulate and hold electricity. Measured as a percentage of a new battery.

The operation of the battery is accompanied by an increase in internal resistance and this is due to the chemical processes occurring inside the drive. Some of the energy of the electric battery begins to be spent on heating it, and in simple terms, the battery begins to age. It is by the state of the “health” of the electricity source that you can find out how much the device has lost its condition. Obviously, the closer the SOH is to 100%, the better for the owner of a Nissan Leaf.

If any of the above parameters deviate from the ideal by more than fifteen percent, we can safely assume that the battery has expired and needs to be replaced.

When it comes to the condition of the battery, one cannot help but pay attention to the fact that when transporting an electric vehicle from America or other long-term storage, SOH will lose approximately 4-5%. At the same time, this does not mean that the drive has become worse and has become unusable. The explanation here is simple: the controller, due to lack of functioning, begins to give slightly false readings. What can be done in this situation? In principle, everything is the same as in the case of a vehicle equipped with a classic internal combustion engine - you need to drive the car! That is, just drive an electric car in aggressive mode. Second: you need to charge the electric car several times to 100% and ensure it is discharged, at least to the minimum number of bars in the menu of the remaining percentage of battery energy.

You can also use a software-level reset of the drive. If you carry out a similar maneuver in the summer, the battery will begin to give out its real performance in an accelerated mode. But if a car enthusiast decides to carry out such an event in the cold season, then he will have to wait until the ambient temperature exceeds +10 degrees. Only in this case, you will see the real indicators of the most expensive component of any modern electric car.

The display shows several more parameters, one of them is the total voltage at the battery output.

You can also see the number of “accelerated” recharges during the entire driving time of the Nissan Leaf.

Group U

This letter indicates that the failure indicates improper operation of electronic modules or digital data buses.

Error U1000

The user guide states that it indicates invalid or missing data for the primary identifier. Simultaneously with the error being displayed, the Checker and ESP lights light up.

The main causes:

  • damage or short circuit of the CAN bus controller circuit;
  • problems with the engine control microprocessor;
  • problems with the CAN bus connection to ground.

Causes

Despite the fact that deciphering the code P0744 means problems with electrical equipment, the appearance of a warning is not necessarily associated with electrical faults. This may indicate the presence of one or more of the following failures:

malfunction or poor contact at the connection of the solenoid valve responsible for locking the torque converter;

increased contamination of the transmission fluid;

clogging of variator filters;

clogged valve body channels, which prevents oil circulation;

oil pump malfunction or damage to the pressure relief valve body;

broken or damaged wiring.

It is possible that other mechanical equipment of the Nissan gearbox has failed. In rare cases, message P0744 may indicate a malfunction in the engine or transmission control units.
