How to replace the air filter on a VAZ 2110 and 2112 with your own hands?

Filters used in Lada Kalina

Viburnum uses three types of filters that are responsible for cleaning its liquid or air.

Viburnum filter:

  • Fuel;
  • Oily;
  • Air;

These categories include the following filters.

Fuel:

  • Fuel pump mesh;
  • Fine fuel filter;

Oil:

  • Oil purification filter;

Air:

  • Engine air filter;
  • Cabin filter;

Each of these filters strictly performs its own functions, and contamination of each of them negatively affects the operation of the area in which it is installed.

Do regular maintenance - help the engine!

Of course, this applies primarily to stable oil changes after a certain period of time and replacement of all kinds of filters according to the mileage of the car. And today we will talk about such a device, without which the work of the entire engine would be difficult. Of course, we will talk about the air filter.

What is an air filter for?

This filter is no longer helpful to you.

The engine air filter serves for timely air purification, as well as the formation of a fuel mixture in the engine. According to statistics, for every 100 kilometers driven, a car is capable of consuming from 11 to 16 cubic meters of atmospheric air, which undoubtedly contains particles of dust and dirt. And if there was no air filter in the car, then premature repair of the engine would be guaranteed.

Fuel filters Kalina

The fuel filter is responsible for cleaning the fuel before it enters the combustion chamber of the car. The viburnum has two fuel filters, one for coarse fuel purification and the second for fine purification.

Fuel pump mesh

The mesh installed on the fuel pump is called a coarse fuel filter; popularly it is also called a “diaper”. This part largely protects the fuel pump from large particles of debris that end up in the fuel tank with gasoline. Sometimes the mesh becomes dirty, which leads to problems with the car.

It is necessary to change the fuel pump mesh every 50,000 km, but it often happens that the mesh becomes dirty much faster due to the low quality of automobile fuel in our country.

Replacing the fuel pump mesh Kalina

Fuel filter

This filter is located under the bottom of the car near the rear beam, and is secured with a clamp. Its purpose is to clean the fuel from particles of debris that have passed through the mesh of the fuel pump. After the fuel filter, gasoline directly enters the combustion chamber through the nozzles, that is, after the filter, gasoline should come out more frequently without any debris.

You have to change the fine fuel filter a little more often than the fuel pump mesh, namely every 30,000 km, but many car owners advise replacing it before every winter, so as not to have problems with starting the car in cold weather.

Symptoms of clogged Kalina fuel filters

There are several symptoms that clearly indicate that one of the fuel filters is dirty and requires urgent replacement.

Symptoms:

  • Loss of engine power (the car does not gain its former speed, the dynamics have worsened);
  • Difficulty starting the engine after idle time;
  • The car starts and immediately stalls;
  • You have to turn the starter for a long time to start the internal combustion engine;

How to check?

You can check the frequency of the fuel system by measuring the fuel pressure in the fuel rail; if the filter is clogged, the pressure will be much lower than the required values (3.8-4.0 kgf/cm). It should also be remembered that low fuel pressure in the system can be caused by an old faulty fuel pump, a broken RTD and injectors leaking fuel.

Filtron - 354 rubles

The filter is not made in the most accurate way, with flashes, although the side of the frame is closest to the original design. There are stiffening ribs. The sizing is high quality and complete. The paper is darker than other filters, which may indicate heat treatment.

Air filters

These filters are used in Kalina to clean the air entering the cabin and engine. Both filters are made of paper and do not last very long; their service life depends on where the car is used. If the car is used on gravel or country roads, the service life of these filters is sharply reduced.

Engine air filter

This filter is installed in the engine compartment in a special box and serves to clean the air necessary for the operation of the internal combustion engine, which is subsequently mixed with fuel to form a fuel mixture.

The filter must be replaced every 30,000 km, but if the car is used on dirt roads, it is best to replace this part with a new one a little earlier at 20,000 km.

Symptoms of a clogged engine air filter

When the air filter in a car becomes clogged, the following symptoms appear:

  • Engine power is lost;
  • Engine starting deteriorates;
  • The car engine stalls spontaneously;
  • No idle;

If such symptoms appear on your car, you need to check the air filter for frequency; if it is very clogged, and you don’t have a new filter at hand, you can pop it and put it in place. This will be enough to complete the train and buy a new filter.

Replacing the Kalina air filter

  • Unscrew the 4 bolts securing the air filter box cover and remove it;
  • Install a new filter and close the lid;

Cabin filter

It is installed in front of the stove fan and serves to protect it from debris, as well as to clean the air from harmful gases and various odors. The cabin filter also helps protect air ducts from contamination.

Symptoms of a clogged cabin filter:

  • The flow from the air ducts becomes noticeably weaker;
  • The stove or air conditioner loses its effectiveness;
  • An unpleasant odor appears from the air ducts;

If such malfunctions are detected in your car, you need to clean or replace the cabin filter.

Test method

The air filter test bench is built according to the ISO 5011 standard used to test these components - and uses all testing methods.

The filter being tested is installed in its original housing (ideal for testing). Next, using a fan, the injection of rarefied air is simulated, as during normal movement. The air flow should be what the engine uses at rated power.

The first parameter is the initial resistance. (auxiliary, directly involved in determining dust capacity) It demonstrates what resistance the filter has to air flow, how “easy it is to breathe” for an engine equipped with such a filter. Its value directly determines the life of the filter element. The higher this value, the lower the resource. The initial resistance depends solely on the design of the engine air path, the size of the window covered by the filter element, the material used to make the curtain, and its parameters (the size of the corrugations and their number). Since the comparative tests used the same housing, adapters and feeder, the factors determining the initial resistance were the curtain material, the dimensions of the corrugations and the quality of workmanship.

The second parameter is dust capacity. This is, in fact, a resource as such. This parameter has no lower limit. In principle, there is no upper one either, but the higher this indicator, the better. The car manufacturer regulates it with the requirement “not less than...”. The key factor determining this parameter is the filtering surface area of the curtain. As an integral indicator, it evaluates its shape, geometry and dimensions. The second most important factor is the properties of the curtain material (air permeability, average and maximum pore size). The division into “first” and “second” factors is very arbitrary in importance, since they largely influence one another. Geometry is determined earlier during design purely chronologically, which is why in this description this factor is declared first.

The third parameter is filtration efficiency. It shows how much dust supplied to the input was retained by the filter. The higher this parameter, the better. In terms of significance, it is more important than the previous two; when comparing filter elements, it is rated first, and only with equal efficiency values can these elements be compared in other respects.

Kalina oil filter

An oil filter is used to clean the oil from debris that has been cut off during engine operation, such as chips or scale. The filter is a cylinder inside, which has a special oil-resistant filter paper, passing through which the oil is cleaned. The filter also has a check valve that retains oil and prevents it from draining from the cylinder head.

The oil filter must be changed every time the engine oil is changed.

Symptoms of a poor quality or clogged oil filter

On Kalina, if the oil filter is clogged, the following malfunctions are possible:

  • Loss of oil pressure in the internal combustion engine;
  • Noisy operation of the internal combustion engine;
  • On 16-valve engines, knocking of hydraulic compensators is possible;

If your car shows such signs of breakdown, you need to change the oil and filter.

BIG Filter — 297 rubles

The most affordable filter from the St. Petersburg manufacturer. The housing seal is made of polyurethane foam, although it is molded unevenly. The last parameter is officially allowed, since it does not affect the operation of the filter in any way. There are no complaints about the gluing; there are stiffening ribs on the plates. The paper is thick, phenolic impregnated. With the exception of not the most careful pruning, no savings are visible.

Procedure for replacing the filter on VAZ 2110, 2111 and 2112

Before replacing the filter, you need to pay attention to the associated electronics and electrical wiring. To avoid problems with this, you should de-energize the battery by disconnecting one of the terminals from it. Then, even if water gets on the wiring or a bare wire is accidentally touched by your hand, there will be no problems.

Changing this important system for a car - whether on an injection engine or a carburetor - is a very quick job, it only takes 5-10 minutes.

Tool preparation:

  • Ten wrench;
  • Curly screwdriver;
  • Directly filter;
  • Rags or rags.

Mann-Filter — 653 rubles

The geometry of the filter layer is noticeably different from the original: a larger cross-section with semicircular edges is a signature feature of Mann-Filter. This indicates the manufacturing technology used by a particular company and does not affect the quality or functionality of the filter. Longitudinal stripes on paper indicate the inside/outside during manufacturing. The curtain is perfect, the sizing is complete, without any gaps.

Do-it-yourself Federal Tax Service

This method works on a car with a carburetor where the air filter housing is shaped like a pan. As far as we know, air enters the case through a small hole.

The filter housing is cut completely so that when installing the filter, air can flow evenly from all sides. This will make it easier for the motor to breathe. This method can only be used in the warm season, since in the cold season the engine may not start due to cold air.

Champion - 510 rubles

High quality and carefully made filter. A complete copy of the original both in terms of seal and plate. The first thing that catches your eye is white paper (this is the original color of the raw material with acrylic impregnation; any color shade indicates the use of phenolic impregnation or heat setting).

Paper impregnation can be acrylic (white) or phenolic (yellow). Dark color means the filter has been heat set to hold its shape. True, the last parameter is more relevant for fuel and oil filters, where the working surface directly interacts with a dense liquid.

Carburetor engine

The technology for changing the filter on a carburetor engine is the same. Only the lid is removed in a slightly different way.

  1. Using a wrench, you need to unscrew the nut in the middle of the lid and unfasten the 4 fastening latches on the sides.
  2. Next, the cover is also removed (there is no pipe, so you can safely put it on the ground), the old filter is removed, the housing is cleaned of dirt, and a new part is installed.
  3. The cover is placed back on the body and secured with a nut and side fasteners. Be sure to check whether the lid fits tightly to the body. If the fit is not tight, gaps will appear. Through which untreated dirty air will enter the engine.

Bosch - 591 rubles

The production is generally of high quality. As with the Fram, there is some minor flash. Thin paper was used, resulting in an increased number of corrugations. Again, this is a company-specific technology choice and does not affect quality. However, from experience we can say that the use of thin paper reduces dust holding capacity. The gluing is continuous, but the corrugation is uneven, the pitch is uneven - the working surface can collapse when air flows.

The Truth About the Zero Resistance Filter

Many have heard about such a filter, but not everyone has tried it in practice.

Unlike the factory filter element, the zero filter has a different air resistance, a different appearance and methods of fixation.

Manufacturers note that the use of such a filter increases the torque and power of the power unit. Consequently, this has a positive effect on the dynamics of the car and the operation of the car at upper speeds.

In practice, this corresponds to reality, because installing a zero-resistance filter is considered the first and most affordable measure for tuning a VAZ 2110 engine. Since this is a “ten”, the cost of zero-resistance filters for it is at an affordable level, so such a purchase cannot be called a luxury.

The nulevik has some features that are extremely important to know about.

  • Such a filter is replaced more often than with a conventional element.
  • Its price is noticeably higher, which leads to an increase in financial costs for maintaining the car.
  • If you do not want to change the element, it can be washed and impregnated with special compounds. But they are also expensive.
  • Nulevik fills the fuel assembly with air more efficiently, and the mixture burns more efficiently. And for better combustion, more fuel is required. Consequently, the presence of a nulevik influences the increase in fuel consumption.

Zero resistance filter

Sakura — 710 rubles

The most expensive of the tested filters and the only one that was additionally wrapped in cellophane. Plastic frame without stiffeners, just like Mahle. As in the case of Bosch, thin paper was used, but everything was done carefully, with minimal fraying and complete sizing.

Fram - 477 rubles

The design is standard, corrugated paper is not subject to sticking, the quality of sizing is ideal, the polyurethane seal and plate are made like the original. A small flash along the edges of the working surface does not affect the functionality of the filter. The plastic frame is a little simpler than on the original.

Mahle — 648 rubles

The filter is made sloppily, with the largest amount of flash. There are no stiffening ribs on the frame - this affects acoustic comfort; in real conditions, such a filter can “hum.” Moreover, the plate itself is polyamide, not polypropylene, that is, made of more expensive plastic. There are no complaints about the curtain, everything is well glued.

Injection engine

  1. This type of engine has a round filter. Changing the filter element must begin by removing the cover from the main body. To do this, you need to unscrew all four fastening screws. It won't be possible to completely remove the cover and put it away so it doesn't interfere because of the interfering pipe, so you can just put it next to the engine. Just make sure that it is not hot, otherwise the plastic case will melt.
  2. Next, the old filter that has become unusable is carefully removed and a new one is put in its place. Just first you need to take a rag and clean the case from the dust that has accumulated there. Otherwise, all this dirt will immediately begin to clog the newly installed new cleaning element. When installing, you need to pay special attention to the corrugation of the new part. The location must correspond to the arrows marked on the inside of the filter and be located along them.
  3. Then the cover is put back and tightened with the same bolts. It is advisable to install it hermetically so that no dirt or dust gets inside. You can select and use a good rubber seal.

Where is the air filter element located and what is it?

The VAZ-2110 air filter is located in the engine compartment of the car. Where is the cabin filter of the VAZ 2110 and what is it like. Depending on the type of motor, its housing may have a different appearance. How to replace the oil filter and that this is the same Kia, so that the pads fall into place and. In carburetor engines it is made of metal and has a round shape. The VAZ-2110 air filter (injector) is placed in a rectangular plastic housing.

The filter element itself also has a different shape: for a carburetor it is round, for an injector it is rectangular. How to replace the air filter. VAZ 2112, 2111 -. It is made from a special porous material, compressed into an accordion.

The filter housing for injection models is connected to the engine using corrugations. This is a kind of air duct through which already purified air enters the device where the fuel mixture appears. air filter is a thick corrugated rubber hose. For carburetor models, the filter element housing is installed directly on the carburetor.
