The throttle valve is an element of the fuel system of a gasoline engine. These devices supply metered air into the cylinders of the internal combustion engine, thereby taking an active part in the “preparation” of air-fuel mixtures. Their location is between the air filter and the intake manifold.

Uninterrupted operation of a car is impossible without constant “feeding” of the engine with the required volume of oxygen. Note that different power and speed of the car are provided by different amounts of gasoline and fuel. This regulation is precisely what the chokes do. In mechanical control drives, cables are attached to the gas pedals. The driver, by pressing the indicated pedal, forces the cable to stretch and pull behind it a semicircular metal part connected directly to the damper and located, as a rule, on the same axis of rotation with the latter. As a result, the throttle opens slightly or, on the contrary, closes, thereby supplying air or blocking its supply to the pipeline through which it enters the engine. Drivers of cars equipped with mechanical dampers have to regulate the volume of the air-fuel mixture entering the engine, and, accordingly, its power “outside”, that is, by pressing the accelerator pedal. Only low-budget cars can boast of this principle of operation.

Throttle valve for electronic gas pedal (E-Gas)

All modern cars are equipped with electronic throttle valves, which are characterized by the absence of a cable drive, replaced by the so-called electronic gas pedal. Essentially, the operation of the throttle is controlled electronically. When you press or release the gas pedal, the signal from the corresponding sensor enters the electronic control unit - the “brain” of the car, where it is processed and adjusted, after which a command is sent to the throttle model. As a result, the damper changes position, opening or closing the pipeline through which the air-fuel mixture enters the engine. In addition, the throttle changes positions:

  • at the moments of injection and ignition;
  • when the required torque is achieved;
  • at moments when cars start moving or accelerate.

The advantages of a throttle valve for an electronic gas pedal (E-Gas) are obvious. They are due to the fact that the electronic control unit, constantly receiving information from all sensors, promptly responds to the slightest changes in any parameter. As a result, the operation, in particular, of the engine is optimized, which manifests itself:

  • achieving the required torque;
  • economical fuel consumption;
  • stable operation of the engine at idle speed.

In addition, optimal environmental performance of the vehicle is ensured, as well as the safety of its movement.

Large diameter throttle body, 52mm, 54mm, 56mm, 60mm

Before discussing larger diameter throttle valves, we note that the standard unit has a diameter of 46 millimeters. However, larger dampers are available on the market. They are used when tuning the exhaust system of cars in order to increase engine power. A larger throttle diameter allows you to increase the amount of air entering the internal combustion engine cylinders. This entails an increase in the volume of the air-fuel mixture, an improvement in the dispersion of gasoline, as well as its uniform diffusion in the air. As a result, there is a slight increase in engine power. Note that the devices discussed are most effective when installed in conjunction with a zero-resistance filter.

What does it look like?

A common method of tuning a throttle valve with your own hands is to install a throttle valve of increased diameter. For example, on VAZ models the standard damper has a diameter of 46 mm, the tuned one – 54 mm. Of course, you shouldn’t count on a colossal increase in power due to such changes, but such tuning of the VAZ throttle valve can still change the behavior of the car.

The shutter is made from an old one; you just need to bore out the channel and install an enlarged shutter. That's all the tuning of the throttle valve of a VAZ 2110, or another model. In a simple way, the narrowest oxygen supply channel is enlarged.

Types and prices

In total, three modifications of throttle valves are offered for the VAZ 2114 from 2001-2013. These include:

  • Original mechanical ones with a damper diameter of 46 mm - from 990 rubles . (without sensor).
  • Mechanical with an enlarged damper of 52, 54 or even 56 mm (increased engine performance) - from 1,240 rubles .
  • Electronic 46 and 52 mm for 16-valve cylinder heads - from 1,700 rubles .
  • Non-original 4-throttle intake (comprehensive replacement of the standard intake system in order to highly saturate the fuel-air mixture and increase torque) - from 4,300 rubles .

A little theory

Using a standard throttle valve, air consumption measurements showed that the engine consumes approximately 14 kg at idle, and about 22 kg at 3000 rpm. All this, of course, only applies to a fully functional engine. If we take measurements with a modified damper, then consumption at idle speed remains the same, but at the same 3000 revolutions it increases from 22 to 33 kg. This means that the increase in power is only felt at rpm of 2500 and above.

In a word, such tuning of the throttle valve on the VAZ 2110 takes place if the car often moves along the highway. In the city you won’t be able to experience all the delights of the modification.

A little practice

Those who have already resorted to similar tuning of the VAZ 2112 throttle valve note a change in the dynamics of acceleration. In addition, due to greater oxygen filling of the cylinders, and at the same time an increase in power, fuel consumption is reduced. The savings are insignificant, about 0.5 liters, but subsequently this accumulates into a rather noticeable result. Again, the main achievement of tuning is the increased engine power.

Relatively recently, a new throttle valve appeared on sale, the diameter of which is no longer 54 mm, but 56. This means, in theory, that the engine can become even faster.

The downside of such tuning of the throttle valve of a VAZ 2114, or other models, is the need to reflash the control unit for a new throttle valve. However, what can’t you do to make the car at least a little sportier.

How to install a wider throttle body?

So, to install a throttle with a larger diameter, you will need:

  • disassemble the carburetor;
  • remove the old 46 mm damper;
  • put a new one at 54, 56 or 52 mm;
  • manually bore (cut) the gasket;
  • Reassemble everything by lubricating the gasket with automotive sealant (usually red or gray).

Or you can simply replace the gasket with a new one, taking it from the LPG system under 2110; these are sold in almost every automotive parts store and are cheap. But everything will be aligned, smooth and without burrs or oil leakage.

But a 56 mm damper is not recommended. It greatly reduces the speed of air flow, causing insufficient oxygen to enter the cylinder to burn fuel. The 56 mm damper will only be relevant in cars with a gas cylinder equipment system. The throttle itself is installed using a similar method - removing the old one and installing a new one.

And again, the increase only from such a modification in the operation of the car will not give a fundamental change in power. It is better to perform the installation in combination with other methods of tuning an internal combustion engine. Installation on the Priora will not bring any changes, because they already use a 16-valve system. That is, the fuel mixture burns perfectly without unnecessary modifications. A larger diameter throttle valve is simply a waste of money and time for installation work. It is better to modify the factory firmware installed on the on-board computer, and also install a “spider” - there will be more advantages with approximately the same expenses.

It does not matter what type of inductor itself will be used. The main thing is not the cheapest one, which is made of low-quality steel - it wears out quickly and bends (the highest load is generated at the moment the ignition is turned on).

There is another option - to install a two-throttle valve on the VAZ.

Naturally, along with them you will also need a primary factory receiver with an increased diameter (you can do it yourself by modifying the old one, or you can purchase a new one, already prepared for installation). This will actually give the 2114 an increase of about 15-20% in power. Fuel consumption will remain virtually unchanged. In addition to traction, acceleration and idling will also improve (it will stop stalling, even if the engine is cold). But such modifications should already be installed in a workshop. You can purchase all the necessary components, and then deliver them to any auto repair shop for a fee. Installation here is complicated by the fact that you will have to slightly modify the standard mount.

Throttle valve malfunctions VAZ 2114

The mechanism itself is not a complex structure and is designed for the entire service life of the engine. However, some design features of the motor and a number of external negative factors, over time, create obstacles to its normal operation. In most cases, problems with the damper are the result of simple contamination. The reasons for the appearance may be the following:

  • untimely replacement of the air filter, resulting in the entry of dusty, unpurified air;
  • the presence of defects and cracks in the air system and its elements (for example, a defective air filter, a torn pipe), the result is the same - contamination of the air flow;
  • the appearance of carbon deposits and oil residues on the inner walls of the throttle assembly and valve.

The result of the above reasons is the incorrect operation of the unit; the damper may not fully open or close, which directly negatively affects the operation of the engine. Although the filtration and air flow purification process can be controlled, it will not be possible to completely get rid of carbon deposits. Therefore, automakers recommend periodic cleaning of the unit from contamination every 25 thousand kilometers. We believe that this recommendation is completely justified in the conditions of Russian reality, the quality of fuel and the condition of the road surface.

Troubleshooting

Before taking any action, you need to check the VAZ 2114 throttle valve for possible problems.

In order to accurately diagnose a malfunction or incorrect operation of the throttle, there are characteristic signs inherent to it. These are:

  • Instability of engine speed at idle, their unreasonable increase;
  • Periodically stalling engine;
  • Jerking while moving;
  • The discrepancy between the effort when squeezing the gas pedal and the final result (the proper reaction from the engine does not occur, power does not increase, the car does not pick up speed or does it late).
  • Noticeable increase in fuel consumption in standard driving mode.

Please note that the causes of problems can be caused by: - ​​A malfunction of the TPS sensor, as a result of which fuel is supplied to the system in the wrong amount. — Malfunction of the idle speed controller. Therefore, sometimes it is advisable to check these important elements of the system.

What modifications can be made to complement the installation of a wider throttle body?

If possible, you should install modified firmware of the on-board computer, where the ignition start time will be reduced, and the automatic adjustment of the damper will be increased to a more open position when certain engine speeds are reached. You can also install a 16-valve system, like on the Priora. Then it will be possible to regulate the moment of spark supply and opening of the valves for exhaust. These are additional chip tuning capabilities (modifications by changing and upgrading the software of the electronic control unit). And also, if possible, it is better to test the damper in 52 mm, 56, 50. Auto repair shops are sure to have these, and the tests will take at most 20 minutes.

So, installing a new damper is not difficult. But simply replacing it will practically not change anything in the operation of the engine. However, if you expand the receiver and, in general, the entire intake to a wider one, this will already be a major modernization of the engine. Not only the power will increase, but also the speed of acceleration and smoothness when changing gears.

Correction of a factory miscalculation

It is quite common for a throttle assembly to come out of the factory with something that cannot even be called a defect, but can still be attributed to design errors. In theory, air should flow into the space behind the throttle, for which a channel of approximately 2.5 mm is specially made.

But the whole problem is that this channel was pressed against the wall of the receiver, thus blocking the possibility of air flow. A slight modification of the throttle assembly can help in this case.

1 Consequences of throttle valve contamination

The throttle valve contains a sensor that transmits information about its opening to the electronic engine control unit. After this, the ECU regulates the supply of fuel to the combustion chambers. Many VAZ 2112 owners are thinking about increasing the power of their car by improving or replacing this engine unit. After a year or two, the car begins to behave less quickly, the idle speed disappears, and small vibrations begin to spread throughout the body.

Symptoms of a clogged mechanical regulator are immediately noticeable - the engine takes a long time to switch from high speed to idle, even when the gas pedal is suddenly released. This is most felt when you switch to neutral speed or simply coast. This is usually followed by a smooth stop of the engine instead of the standard return to idle. There are also problems with cold starting or, conversely, an engine that is too “heated” will require turning the starter for a long time, which is fraught with consequences in its own way.

Often it is the condition of the throttle valve that affects this. How? The fact is that after 50–60 thousand kilometers, the patch on the damper becomes dirty, and this leads to improper operation of the engine. So before you think about completely replacing or upgrading your throttle body, maybe you should try just cleaning it?
