Selection and replacement of Renault Logan shock absorber struts phase 2

Renault Logan rear shock absorbers, under certain conditions, may be subject to greater loads than the front struts. So that once again, when returning from the dacha with a trunk full of potatoes, or when transporting several bags of cement in a car for home repairs, you do not encounter the problem of failure of these parts, you must take care in advance of installing high-quality struts on the rear axle of the Renault Logan car. This article will discuss in detail not only the issue of choosing products, but also their correct installation. In addition, every Renault Logan owner needs to know how to recognize the signs of a malfunction in time.

Replacing rear struts Renault Logan

Both shock absorbers on Renault Logan, both front and rear, are responsible for correct load distribution.
The key parameter is the total weight of the vehicle with all cargo and passengers. In this case, the springs must be in a compressed position. When shock absorbers work correctly, the wheel moves vertically and horizontally, ensuring smooth movement of the car along the road surface. Without the above conditions, of course, the car will sway while driving and behave “dangerously”. The “symptoms” described above may also be associated with other breakdowns in the car. In this regard, if you are not sure that the problem is in the shock absorbers, contact your nearest service station or workshop.

When it comes to checking and repairing shock absorbers, it is extremely important to identify the breakdown in time. So that you can adequately assess the situation yourself, without visiting a service center, here are a few obvious symptoms that indicate that the car needs to replace the shock absorbers:

  • After hitting uneven sections of the road (potholes, potholes or potholes), the car sways for a long time.
  • The front or rear of the car rises asymmetrically relative to each other when accelerating quickly.
  • The rear wheel row “bounces” on uneven surfaces, and the car’s controllability is lost.
  • When braking hard, the front of the car tilts forward slightly.
  • Renault Logan does not hold the road well when making turns, the natural stability of the car when turning is disrupted.
  • While driving, uncharacteristic knocks, creaks and grinding noises of parts in the area of the wheels and suspension are heard.

The signs described above almost certainly indicate that the rear shock absorbers have failed. This can be caused by several reasons: wear and tear due to age, rust or corrosion from driving in wet and rainy areas. The only correct solution for the symptoms described above is to completely replace the Renault Logan rear shock absorbers.

Another common sign of failure of this suspension unit is extraneous noise. In this case, pay attention to the following reasons:

  • There is insufficient lubricant in the shock absorber. In this regard, the integrity of the oil seal may be lost. Here a quick external inspection will be sufficient to identify oil on the surface of the shock absorber.
  • Internal structural damage.
  • Deformation, modification or damage to the external part of the part: the spring or rod itself.
  • Loss of the required level of fixation on the suspension. Check that all elements are securely fastened. Otherwise, retighten the fasteners.
  • The wear of the suspension elements has reached a critical stage when they cannot cope with the applied load. The only solution in this situation is immediate replacement.

Naturally, the expression “prepared is forearmed” also makes sense in car repair. One way or another, understanding the problem, having a plan to solve it and a full set of supporting tools is 90 percent of success. At this stage, you should have already decided on the purchase of the shock absorbers themselves. As for the tools that you will need when replacing Renault Logan rear shock absorbers yourself, these are:

  • Jack. Without this assistant, virtually no repairs are carried out.
  • Penetrating lubricant. Needed to lubricate the assembled part.
  • 18mm socket or convenient modern wrench. You will need it to remove the fasteners.
  • The wrench is a universal T-shaped wrench that can be used to handle even very strong bolts.
  • A 6- and 16-open-end wrench is the most classic wrench there is. The design of the shock-absorbing casing allows you to reach the fasteners not only with a bolt wrench, but also with a regular one.

Prepare these tools before starting work. This will save time and get the job done as efficiently as possible.

Also, to carry out such work you will need the following tools:

  • A set of spanners and open-end wrenches.
  • Hexagon - asterisk at “6”.
  • WD-40 lubricant or liquid wrench.
  • Spring ties.

With such a small set of tools, you can easily replace the racks.

The rear suspension on Renault Logan has a more complex design than the front. And this difference is justified, because the load on the rear axle of the car is stronger, so a stronger and more elastic mechanism is required to dampen its vibrations. Springs alone are no longer enough.

The design of the rear shock absorbers is of a semi-independent type, and Logan consists of the following elements:

  • Torsion beam - all suspension elements are attached to it in one way or another;
  • Two levers that serve as the main components of the support. The durability of the entire system largely depends on their strength;
  • Two hydraulic shock absorbers on each wheel, containing cylinders filled with a special mixture of viscous liquid and gas, and a free-moving piston inside. The last element is not monolithic - it contains so-called bypass valves. Thanks to them, the liquid is able to flow into that part of the cylinder where its pressure is lower;
  • On the outside, the shock absorbers are wrapped in steel springs, increasing the elasticity of these devices.

Almost all malfunctions of these elements are in one way or another related to their wear. You can slow down this process - to do this you just need to follow all the rules for operating the car. But often this does not work out. Being a family car and multifunctional, Logan is often overloaded. And he has to drive on roads that are far from ideal.

The most common shock absorber failures are:

  • Sagging of springs. The reason for this malfunction lies in the fatigue of the steel from which these elements are made. The sagging can be uniform - in this case, the rear of the car will also sag along with the shock absorbers. If these parts wear unevenly, the car will fall on one side or another. Also, this malfunction will make itself felt by an occasional knocking sound while the car is moving, especially on uneven roads. If the springs are tired, not only overloading, but even simply fully loading a car can be deadly;
  • Shock absorbers leaking. The symptoms of this malfunction are the same as when the springs sag. The only difference is that leakage of working fluid from two cylinders at once is extremely rare, so more often than not, when there is a leak, the car begins to gradually roll over on its side. This malfunction is also dangerous because, in addition to loss of vehicle stability, it is fraught with accelerated wear of the spring of the faulty shock absorber. That is why it is so important to contact a car service as soon as possible to fix it. If the cause of the leak is a worn oil seal, just installing a new one will be enough, but if the cause is wear or deformation of the cylinder or its body, then a complete replacement of the rear shock absorbers will be required;
  • Deflection or breakage of shock absorber struts. Most often, this type of malfunction is a consequence of systematic vehicle overloads and excessively fast driving on bumpy roads. One of the symptoms is uneven wear on the tread of the rear wheels. Be that as it may, the only possible repair in this case is replacing the rear struts with Renault Logan;
  • Deflection or breakage of the torsion beam. The reasons for this are the same as the repair method: replacing a failed part. And although the cost of a new beam is small, the total cost of repairs can be quite high, because to do this you will have to completely disassemble and dismantle the rear suspension of the car, and this procedure is long and quite labor-intensive.

Repair of any complexity of rear shock absorbers begins with diagnosing the entire suspension mechanism of the car. Firstly, this is necessary for an accurate determination of the malfunction, and secondly, for an adequate assessment of the technical condition of the entire suspension. It is no secret that a malfunction of any of its components, even a minor one, can cause other breakdowns.

It often turns out that completely replacing Renault Logan rear shock absorbers is more expedient than restoring the functionality of the old ones, both from an economic point of view and from the point of view of the quality of repairs. Moreover, the shock absorber of this car is a non-separable structure.

Of course, if necessary, you can remove and replace any of its elements, but you cannot expect that the reliability of the unit will remain the same.

According to the experience of car service specialists, replacing Renault Logan rear struts is the only alternative to a broken or bent element. Of course, it can be straightened and welded, but the strength and reliability will no longer be the same.

Fortunately, these parts can also be replaced individually. However, the car repair procedure itself involves complete disassembly and dismantling of the rear suspension, so the cost can be high.

Preparing for replacement: what tools are needed

In order to replace the front struts on a Renault Logan, you will need the following spare parts:

  • New racks.
  • Support cups.
  • Anti-dust covers - are a special “corrugation” that protects the stand from dust and its particles.
  • Rubber support.
  • Bumpers - ensures the shock-absorbing properties of the rack.
  • Bearing set.
  • Self-locking nuts - for attaching the new strut to the lever.
  • New springs for the shock absorber - they should be replaced only in cases where the old elements are broken or no longer meet technical requirements (sagged).

In stores selling spare parts for the front suspension of Renault Logan, there is a so-called “repair kit”, which includes: a support bearing, a support and a washer. Video of replacing the rear struts of Renault Logan. Server Halilov. Good afternoon, guys, can you tell me what kind of impact wrench you have? Such a kit should be purchased only when all elements require replacement.

Choosing shock absorbers: original parts and high-quality analogues

Selection of spare parts always causes inconvenience to the vehicle owner. A number of questions that arise during the replacement process will make even the most experienced driver think: original or Chinese equivalent, choose a cheap option or spend money, take new spare parts or “real” used parts? As you can see, even in such a seemingly simple situation as replacing rear shock absorbers on a Renault Logan, nuances may arise.

Sequential order of replacing front struts

The Logan rear shock absorber is not a very difficult part to replace. At the slightest hint of malfunction or breakdown, of course, it is necessary to replace it. We have prepared a detailed guide for you, according to which you can easily cope with the replacement yourself:

  1. First of all, place the car above the inspection hole. Use a jack to raise the rear wheels.
  2. There is a protective cover on the protective arch located at the rear. It needs to be dismantled.
  3. The shock absorber rod is secured with a special nut. Use a 16 key to remove this protective element. After this you will be able to remove the washer.
  4. Raise the car a few more centimeters. There is a fixation bolt located right under the shock absorber clamp. By removing it, you will be able to remove the last protective element - the shock absorber support.
  5. The spacer sleeve and rubber cushion, located exactly under the rod, can be removed very simply after unscrewing all the fasteners described above.
  6. Then you have to remove the washer and the buffer, which is located right next to the protective casing.
  7. Behind them is a protective cap. Don’t be surprised, because the shock absorber is an important part of the suspension, so it is not without reason that it is protected by a number of protective elements.
  8. Replace the shock absorber and follow the steps described in this chapter in reverse order for installation.

As you can see, replacement is as easy as shelling pears. By following the recommendations that we have collected in this material, there is a high probability that you will complete the repair quickly and efficiently.

  1. Place the car on a flat surface. Replacement of rear struts Replacement of front struts (shock absorbers) Renault Logan. You can pre-install wheel chocks or bricks under the rear wheels.
  2. Open the hood and, using a 21mm spanner, securing the rod against rotation with a hexagon, unscrew the strut retainer nut.

In order to unscrew the nut, you need to fix the rod using a hexagon.

This nut only needs to be loosened and not unscrewed.

To make it easier to unscrew the nut, you should treat it a little with lubricant.

Regular inspection and replacement

Like any other auto part, shock absorbers have a number of factors that one way or another affect their wear. Among the most common:

  • The condition of the road surface on which the car is moving.
  • Driving style of the car owner.
  • Weather conditions and, in general, the presence and frequency of precipitation falling in the region where the car owner lives.

Therefore, the better the operating conditions, the longer the Renault Logan rear struts will last. However, the modern realities of the condition of roads in most regions of our Immense region indicate the opposite. The quality of the road leaves much to be desired, so the optimal period before replacing the rear shock absorbers will be 30-35 thousand km. If you are a careful driver, and the roads in your city are like the best examples from Europe, then feel free to move the time slider to 50-60 thousand km.

Fortunately, the rear shock absorbers are not divided into right and left, which at least somewhat simplifies the purchasing process. In the second generation of this popular car, the “bad roads” set disappeared. It all comes down to one single question: should I buy shock absorbers for a station wagon or a sedan? In the first case, you need to choose elongated parts, while in the second with a large stroke of the rod. Below are the article numbers for the main original parts for Renault Logan:

  • 562106313R (red marker), 562103901R (yellow marker) - parts with a rod stroke of 24-24.5 cm. The cost ranges from 2000 to 2600 rubles.
  • 8200953294 (gas), 8200742812 (oil) - spare parts with a rod stroke of 24 cm, the cost of parts does not exceed 2400 rubles.

If you think that analogue shock absorbers are no less high-quality and reliable parts than original spare parts, then this part of the article is for you. We have selected a number of parts that have proven themselves on the market as reliable and durable spare parts:

  • 19122472 – Bilstein shock absorbers. They are in the price range from 2000 to 2200 rubles and are characterized by increased wear resistance.
  • 315530 – parts from the manufacturer Sacsh. Equally high quality, but cheaper spare parts. The price varies from 1900 to 2100 rubles.
  • 343418 is a product of Kayaba. The cheapest parts from our recommendation list. Suitable for both first and second generation cars.

We have smoothly approached the question of what rear shock absorbers will Renault Logan install? Original or their substitutes? Of course, if you are a careful driver and spend the vast majority of your time within the city, then we strongly recommend choosing the “original” part. If you plan to save on replacing this suspension element, then the Chinese Kayaba will do. Without sin, we can say that it is a very high-quality option for quite reasonable money. As practice shows, Kayaba's product is the most popular among owners of the 2nd generation Renault Logan.

Step-by-step instruction

Replacing shock absorbers on Renault Logan must be done sequentially, first one, then the other. If you unscrew both shock absorbers there is a risk of damaging the brake hoses.

1. Open the trunk and remove the trim from the sides.

2. While holding the rod from turning, unscrew the upper nut securing the rear shock absorber.

3. After unscrewing the nut, remove the washer and shock absorber rod cushion.

4. Jack up the wheel on the side where you are changing the shock absorber. This is necessary in order to remove the load from it.

5. Spray with penetrating lubricant and unscrew the lower rear shock absorber mounting bolt.

6. After unscrewing the bolt, remove the rear shock absorber.

7. Remove the spacer sleeve with the lower support washer from the old shock absorber and remove the buffer with a protective cover.

We wash it all and inspect it for damage. We change it if necessary.

8. We pump the new shock absorber. To do this, put the shock absorber in the working position and press the rod with your hand 10-15 times.

9. We put a buffer with a cover and a spacer sleeve with a lower support washer on the new shock absorber.

Diagnostic methods

You can diagnose the rear shock absorbers of a Renault Logan phase 2 yourself in a garage or on a parking lot. For this purpose, it is enough to rock the car from the side of the wheel whose shock absorber strut may be faulty. If, after the mechanical impact on the car has ceased, the body continues to make vertical movements for some time, then this “behavior” of the suspension will indicate a malfunction of the part.

In this way, you can check all the car’s shock absorbers one by one, including the front ones.

How do you know when it's time to think about replacing your front shock absorbers?

The photo shows leaks in the shock absorber strut on the first generation Renault Logan

To find out whether the front struts need to be replaced, you don’t need to be an expert in this matter; the behavior of the car will speak for itself. The suspension of the Renault Logan car is designed in such a way that, first of all, there will be a feeling of vibration in the body when driving even on small uneven road surfaces, and this effect will be especially pronounced when there are changes in speed. Entry No. 159.

You can carry out your own diagnostics by visually checking the condition of the struts for leaks, and also when each side is alternately rocked, the car will randomly “dangle”, reminiscent of the movement of a boat on the waves.

We inform you in advance that replacement of the front struts is carried out only in pairs, therefore, all spare parts and accessories are purchased for both the left and right sides. This is done so that after all the work has been carried out, it is ideal to carry out the wheel alignment operation.

conclusions

As you can see for yourself, there is nothing complicated in carrying out such an operation as replacing the front struts on a Renault Logan. Replacing the thermostat on Renault Logan - instructions and. It is enough just to strictly adhere to the instructions and strictly follow the order of work.

In order to significantly increase the service life of shock absorbers, we recommend installing a front suspension stabilizer. This option reduces the load on the entire suspension and, therefore, extends the service life of all elements as a whole.

When replacing the front struts, the use of spring ties is, in principle, not necessary. When the rod is unscrewed from the support bearing, the spring fully expands and does not shoot out, but it is better to check, i.e.

“If the spring has turned by hand with force, then you can safely” - hand over the spring for scrap metal (sagged)…

I can’t say that my car began to behave differently... But there are small smudges on the struts, smaller than in the photo at the beginning of the article... Tell me, if even small smudges appear, it is better to change the struts immediately or you can still drive on such .

How to install inserts

To increase rigidity and increase ground clearance, many car owners prefer to install spring inserts on Renault Logan, which will prevent the car from sagging on the roads. They are made of dense material that can withstand increased loads. There are several types of spacers for springs:

  • Interturn insert - is easy to install and versatile, but does not allow you to increase ground clearance, but only makes the car more rigid and increases its ability to withstand loads;
  • Spring spacer (regular or adjustable). Requires more complex work, but allows for increased ground clearance. However, installing this element is impractical if the springs are worn out.

Shock absorbers must be replaced in pairs. In this case, the replacement process occurs one by one. Do not remove two shock absorbers at once; this may cause the rear suspension beam to lower too low and damage the brake system pipes.

    1. Engage forward gear and install wheel chocks (shoes) under the front wheels.

    2. Using a jack, lift the rear wheels of the car and install the rear of the car on strong support stands.

Do not install supports under the rear suspension beam. When removing shock absorbers, the suspension must be unloaded.

    3. Open the trunk.

    4. Remove the side trim of the trunk.

    5. Holding the shock absorber rod from turning with a wrench, unscrew the rod securing nut.

    6. Remove the washer from the rod.

    9. Remove the shock absorber from its mounting sockets.

    10. Remove the lower rubber cushion and spacer from the shock absorber rod.

    11. Remove the spacer sleeve from the pillow.

    12. Remove the washer from the rod.

    13. After this, remove the rubber protective cover and compression stroke buffer from the shock absorber rod.

    14. Separate the protective cover from the compression stroke buffer.

    15. Remove the protective cap from the shock absorber.

    16. We examine all parts of the shock absorber for damage. If necessary, we replace defective parts with new ones.

    17. We install the shock absorber vertically and lower and raise its rod several times until it stops. The rod must move without sagging, jamming or knocking. If such defects are detected, the shock absorber assembly is replaced. In addition, you need to pay attention to the fastening thread of the rod. If it is damaged, the shock absorber is also replaced with a new one.

    18. Install the shock absorber in the reverse order of removal.

The upper shock absorber mounting nut and lower shock absorber bolt are only fully tightened with the vehicle parked on the ground.

    19. We lower the car to the ground and rock it several times, applying great force. This is necessary for the shock absorbers to return to their working position.

    20. Tighten the bolt of the lower fastening of the shock absorber to the rear suspension arm with a torque of 105 Nm, and the nut of the upper fastening with a torque of 14 Nm.

    21. In the same way we replace the second shock absorber.
