A burning battery light on the VAZ instrument panel indicates that the battery is discharged or that the light bulb has a malfunction. If it lights up at the moment when the car refuses to start, it is necessary to look for the cause on the spot. If the indicator turns on while the engine is running, do not turn off the ignition immediately, try to get to a place where it will be convenient to remove and install the battery. There is a possibility that you will have to get a generator. The optimal stopping place would be a garage with a lift or pit.
There may be several reasons why the battery on a VAZ is discharged, why the light on a VAZ 2107 is on. Let's look at them, as well as ways to solve problems.
The battery charging light is on
When you start the engine, many different lights come on on the dashboard, one of them is the battery charging light.
Ideally, it lights up as soon as you start the engine and goes out after a while. This indicates that the generator and all its circuits are fully operational and the battery receives a charge of 13.7-14.3 Volts, that is, it is charging. However, various breakdowns often occur due to which the light bulb continues to glow, glows dimly, or does not light at all. To deal with such malfunctions, you need to understand a little about the design of the generator and the principle of its interaction with the battery.
A little theory
On our website Vodi.su we have already described in detail the design of a car generator. Let's just say that electricity is generated in it by the rotation of the crankshaft. As the speed increases, the voltage also increases, but it must be within the limits indicated above, otherwise the battery will be overcharged, which threatens the electrolyte boiling and sulfation of the plates.
To prevent this from happening, a relay regulator is installed in the rotor excitation circuit, thanks to which a stable voltage is supplied to the battery.
The signal from the generator to the warning lamp is transmitted through a fuse, which is also located in the generator itself. Accordingly, the light stays on until the generator starts working and transmits voltage to the battery.
The charge from the generator passes through:
- diode;
- regulator;
- generator brush;
- slip rings;
- winding and wiring.
Thus, if at least one of these elements does not work correctly or fails, the readings of the light bulb cannot be trusted, although charging may be supplied to the battery.
Why is the battery charging light on?
There can be a lot of reasons. So, if after starting the engine the warning light continues to burn at full intensity, most likely the alternator belt has stretched and needs to be replaced. At the same time, you can hear characteristic sounds from the engine. On Vodi.su we have also already told you how to tighten or change a belt.
The second common cause is poor contact at the battery terminals or at the terminals from the generator. Contacts oxidize over time and need to be cleaned.
Failures in the mechanical part of the rotor: the bearing fell apart, the bushings flew off. You will have to completely remove the generator, disassemble it and replace broken parts. Fortunately, you can always find a repair kit of three bushings for a VAZ-2107 or other domestic cars on sale.
Failure of the diode bridge, relay regulator. In this case, you need to check them with a multimeter, or contact a specialist. Repairs often cost more than purchasing a new generator.
Over time, graphite brushes also wear out and need to be replaced regularly. When they are worn out, the charge is not transferred to the winding, and accordingly the light bulb begins to glow dimly, although the charge is transferred, but very weakly. Use a voltmeter as a guide. If the brushes are not changed in time, the battery will constantly be undercharged, which can lead to gradual shedding of the plates.
Generator diagnostics
First of all, the voltage is measured at the battery terminals. If it is lower than required, you need to check the entire circuit step by step:
- belt tension level;
- measure the voltage at each of the generator terminals - at each terminal it should be half as low as at the battery;
- check fuses, relays, diodes;
- check the resistance in the dashboard, the quality of soldering of wires.
If it turns out that the breakdown lies in the generator itself, it will have to be removed and also checked. In particular, they first check the relay regulator, then measure the resistance of the rotor field winding using an ohmmeter. It should not be lower than 4.5 ohms. Also, using the tester, you can determine whether the winding circuit is open.
It is clear that such malfunctions cannot be avoided. However, there are simple tips to help extend the life of the generator:
- first of all, regularly check the quality of its fastening - constant vibrations lead to mechanical damage;
- Clean external surfaces from time to time;
- check the belt tension, tighten if necessary;
- quality of the rotor bearing - remove the belt and spin the rotor, it should rotate smoothly, without play or clicks.
You also need to monitor the quality of the connection of the wires to the generator and voltage regulator.
Thus, a lit battery charging light while the engine is running is a serious reason to make a diagnosis. Please note that it can also light up if you have installed a lot of additional equipment - subwoofers, lights, lights.
Troubleshooting
If you have identified the reason for the activation of this indicator, it’s time to start eliminating it. Below are the main problems and methods for solving them:
- You can eliminate the weakening of the belt or its rupture by adjusting the degree of tension or resort to replacing it;
- in order to clean oxidized terminals, it is enough to clean them using fine-grained sandpaper;
- in the event that the battery is discharged as a result of prolonged operation of electrical appliances with the engine turned off, it is enough to recharge it;
- If there are various internal damages, you should contact a specialist.
Faults such as failed “brushes” and generator wires, as well as broken windings or broken relays cannot be eliminated by repair. In this case, it is advisable to replace the spare part.

Some useful tips
To avoid problems associated with a faulty battery charging circuit, use the following tips.
- Pay more attention to your car's dashboard. This way you will know not only about the charging status of the battery, but also about the operation of other systems and mechanisms.
- Check the alternator belt regularly. The correct operation of the entire on-board network when the engine is running depends on its condition and tension. If you find the slightest defect in the belt, do not delay replacing it.
- Don’t be lazy at least once a month to check the voltage supplied by the generator to the battery terminals. If any discrepancies with the recommended values are detected, perform a full diagnostic of the on-board network.
- Periodically conduct a visual inspection of the condition of the battery terminals and generator terminals. Having discovered their oxidation, clean them with fine sandpaper and treat them with a liquid like VD-40.
- Do not allow water to get on the generator, battery and relay regulator. It can cause a short circuit in the electrical circuit. It is better to entrust engine washing to specialists.
- When repairing the battery charging circuit, avoid using spare parts that raise doubts about their quality.
On a VAZ 2107 the battery charging lamp is on, but there is charging: reasons and what to do
The car dashboard contains not only analog gauges, but also various indicators. One of the main indicators is a battery icon, which lights up red when the ignition is turned on, and goes out as soon as the engine starts. If the battery charging lamp on a VAZ 2107 lights up after starting the engine, this indicates a malfunction of the generator. If the generator is working properly, and the battery is charging, and the lamp is on, then the reasons for the indicator light need to be looked for.
Generator jammed
If there is no rotation inside the generator, the unit must be replaced.
Problems with the generator will also manifest themselves through dim headlights. If the battery is working properly, the engine starts trouble-free when the ignition is turned on, and there are no external manifestations of generator malfunctions, you should not disassemble it for the sole reason that the light is on.
On a VAZ, it sometimes indicates a glitch in the light bulb itself, especially if the car is not new. The most rational option would be to contact a reliable electrician. An alternative is to regularly measure the voltage at the terminals and observe, especially when the ignition is turned on. In-depth diagnostics of the generator is advisable when external signs of its malfunction appear (dim light, low voltage at the terminals, burning smell).
Reasons for the battery charging light to glow
Such bulbs are available in VAZ 2107 injection and carburetor type cars. If, after starting the engine, the indicator in the form of a battery continues to light on the instrument panel of the VAZ 2107, then the owner’s first opinion is that the generator is faulty. This is a correct opinion, and in order to find the exact cause, you will need to carry out diagnostic measures. The reasons for the glow of the lamp on the instrument panel are:
- Weakening of the tension of the generator belt, as well as its wear and damage.
- The fuse link burns out.
- Malfunction of the relay regulator or rectifier (diode) bridge.
- A break occurs in the generator winding.
- Poor contact at the battery terminals.
- Abrasion of graphite brushes on the generator.
- Lack of ground contact.
You cannot operate a vehicle with a glowing battery indicator on the instrument panel. At any moment, the battery can be discharged, since it is not receiving charge from the generator, and the car will simply stall. How long a vehicle can drive with a faulty generator depends on the quality of the battery, its charge and the vehicle’s electricity consumption. Typically this period of time ranges from 10 minutes to 2 hours.
What can a constantly burning battery charging lamp indicate?
Another situation that some owners of domestic cars are familiar with is when the VAZ 2107 battery charging lamp is on, but charging is in progress. What could be the reason, how dangerous it is, and how to eliminate it, we will find out further.
When the battery light is on, but there is charging, the reasons are also hidden in the malfunction of the generator. The car battery has an operating voltage of 12V, and to charge it requires 13.5 to 14.4V. In this case, the battery will be charged, and the lamp on the parting panel will not light up when the engine is running. If the indicator lights up after starting the engine, then there is a high probability that the generator is delivering insufficient voltage to the battery (that is, below 13.5V). If, when measuring the voltage at the battery terminals with the device while the engine is running, the device shows a value of more than 12V, but less than 13.5V, then you need to sound the alarm and start troubleshooting.
Malfunctions in the timing belt
The belt may be torn, stretched, or simply wet.
Timing belt drive
- A belt that is torn or shows signs of physical wear must be replaced.
- Loose, without signs of wear - tighten it. A correctly tensioned belt should not bend by more than 1.5 cm when pressed.
Important! Excessive timing belt tension will damage the generator bearings, which will require time-consuming and expensive repairs. The deflection should be 1-1.5 cm.
- If there is moisture, dry it.
Why does the VAZ 2106 – 2107 battery charging light not light up?
Often owners of VAZ 2106 - 2107 wonder why the battery indicator light does not light up when the ignition is turned on . This is a fairly common problem on classic. And almost everyone has encountered such a manifestation of a malfunction in the car’s energy system.
And it’s one thing if such a malfunction occurs in the summer and 100 meters from the house. Such a breakdown is much more dangerous in cold weather on a country road, especially at night. Therefore, you need to know the causes of the problem, as well as how to fix it. There are several reasons for a light bulb to fail. You'll have to check all the options, fortunately it's not difficult. Basic electrical knowledge is sufficient.
Burnt out battery indicator light
A fairly common cause of this problem is lamp failure. This is perhaps one of the simplest breakdowns, but it is not always harmless. It is advisable to replace the light bulb as quickly as possible. If there are problems with it, you will not be able to identify the problem with the generator in a timely manner. Which will lead to the battery being discharged at the most inopportune time. Thus, driving with a burnt-out lamp is highly not recommended.
Battery charge indicator light VAZ
You should also consider the design features of your car. Most generators have a built-in resistance. This allows you to generate energy even when the charge control lamp is burnt out. On some cars, the lamp itself plays the role of resistance.
This can be found on some modifications of the VAZ 2112, as well as many old foreign cars. In this case, when the light bulb burns out, the generator stops producing current. If your car has this structure, you should always have a spare lamp.
Low battery
Another common reason why the battery warning light does not light up when the ignition is turned on in a VAZ 2106 - 2107 is a weak battery.
If, at the same time that the battery light does not light up, the dashboard instruments do not turn on or are dimly lit, then this is a clear sign of a low battery. The problem can be “cured” by simply charging the battery.
Good battery
However, not all so simple. The discharge of a car battery may not occur because the owner did not have time to charge it in time or forgot to turn off the headlights. A problem with a battery becomes dangerous if the cause lies in the generating device. As you know, the battery must be charged while the car is moving, otherwise it will discharge quite quickly. And this function falls on the generator. But if the latter is faulty, then problems arise.
Thus, a seemingly trivial reason may indicate a damaged car generator, which performs many useful functions. Obviously, a thorough diagnosis should be carried out, the cause should be found and eliminated.
Where to look for a problem and how to fix it
As we have already found out, a burning battery charging light on the battery charge indicator indicates that the generator has broken down and is no longer charging the battery. However, there is a situation when the charging light on a VAZ 2106 car is on and does not go out, but the battery is still charging. The reason for this is also the incorrect operation of the generator or a breakdown in its connection circuit.
Most often, this situation occurs due to the fact that the voltage to the generator is less than normal. So, the nominal battery voltage is 12 V, and charging requires a voltage from 13.5 to 14.4 V.
Broken contacts on battery terminals
If the battery terminals are oxidized, their resistance increases, so the charging current decreases. Often in this case the indicator light lights up dimly.
Cleaning the battery is carried out in the following order:
- disconnect the wires from the battery. First, unscrew the black wires going to the negative contact. Then you can disconnect the cables from the positive terminal, they are red;
Disconnecting the cable from the battery
- wipe the battery with a damp cloth;
- to prepare the cleaning liquid, dissolve 30 grams of soda in 500 ml of water;
- dip an old toothbrush into the prepared solution and clean around the terminals with it, especially carefully in places where oxides form;
Cleaning the terminals
- remove the cleaning liquid from the terminals and wipe all treated areas with a dry cloth;
Removing cleaning fluid
- screw the cables into place.
Cable installation
Alternator belt tension is loose
During prolonged operation, the belt may stretch, its tension will weaken and it will begin to “slip.” In this case, it needs to be tightened or replaced. To tighten the belt you need:
- using a 17mm wrench, loosen the nut securing the position of the generator to the bracket;
Loosen the nut that secures the position of the generator on the bracket
- Using a 19mm wrench, loosen the generator rod nut;
Loosen the generator rod nut
- tighten the belt. If you can't do it manually, you can use a mount;
- tighten the nut securing the generator to the adjusting bracket;
Checking the belt tension
After everything is done, you need to check the belt tension. To do this, press the belt branch with a large screwdriver. The deflection between the engine crankshaft and the pump should be in the range from 12 to 17 millimeters, and between the electric generator and the pump - from 10 to 17 millimeters. If the belt tension is too high, bearing wear will increase and the belt may break.
Video “How to replace an alternator belt”:
Frequently occurring malfunctions: Poor contact of the generator output with ground. To diagnose this malfunction, you need to check all contacts connecting the generator housing to ground. The breakdown can be eliminated in the same way as in the case described above with oxidation of the battery terminals. The indicator lamp relay has failed. The reason why the indicator lamp may light up may be a breakdown of the relay. In this case, the voltage at the battery terminals required for charging will be present when the engine is running, but the light will still be on. In this case, you need to remove the relay, disassemble it and clean the contacts. If cleaning does not help, replace the relay.
Generator faults
If one of the rectifier bridge diodes fails, the generated voltage will decrease. The check is carried out in the following order:
- The rectifier bridge plate (housing) must be connected to the negative terminal of the battery.
- Connect one terminal of the test light to the positive terminal of the battery, and the other to the output of the diode.
- The light should not be on. If it lights up, the diode bridge is broken.
Continuity of the diode bridge
It is not difficult to troubleshoot problems associated with the control lamp. The main thing is to find the reason, and then you won’t have to go to a service center and pay money for repairs.

Hello everyone, this is the Auto Manual, and today in the “Do-it-yourself repair” section we will talk about malfunctions of the battery, generator, on-board network, as well as other reasons why the battery light comes on on the dashboard.
Each of you has probably noticed a little red box on the instrument panel indicating the battery. We all know that it lights up when you turn the key in the ignition and goes out when the engine starts. Why is this happening? When you insert the key and turn it in the ignition, automatic diagnostics of almost all engine systems (ABS, ESP, Airbag, Check Engine, etc.) occurs; after a successful self-test, the indicators go out, which indicates the serviceability of one or another system. The same is with the battery, when it is ok, the indicator goes out, in case of problems with the battery, the battery lamp lights up.
In this article, I will talk about why the battery light is on, as well as malfunctions that can cause the battery light to light up.
Blown fuse
A failed dashboard light may be caused by a blown fuse. In this case, several devices usually fail at once. If such a symptom appears, you just need to check the fuse. It is located in the mounting block.
Mounting fuse block VAZ 2107
You can find it using the diagram on the block cover. To check, the fuse is removed from the mounting block. The easiest way is to install a known good fuse. If this is the reason, then the light should light up when the ignition is turned on. You can also check the fuse by measuring the resistance with a multimeter.
What else to check
- Voltage regulator;
- Generator rectifier unit;
- Diodes;
- Generator for broken windings;
- Generator brush assembly;
- Contacts on the terminals of the generator, mounting block.
A malfunction of any of these elements leads to the fact that the charging system is inoperative and the VAZ 2107 battery is not charged.
Let's continue... Diodes are checked with a test light or multimeter. If one of them is broken, the entire rectifier will have to be replaced.
A light bulb may burn out due to a faulty electrical circuit.
A problem with the circuit that powers the battery light can be caused by several things. Let's consider everything.
So, problems with contacts are becoming quite common. Usually this situation occurs in the spring, after cold weather. During the winter months, moisture accumulates on the connectors, causing the formation of oxides. This makes the contact much worse, as a result of which the indicator stops turning on.
Electrical circuit diagram of VAZ 2107
As a rule, this problem does not appear immediately and is not stable. In other words, the light bulb may light up one time and not another time. The solution to this problem is to clean all connectors. They should be treated with a grease specifically designed for this purpose.
The light bulb may burn out due to an open circuit. To make sure of this, you should arm yourself with a multimeter. The device checks the circuit to determine the faulty section.
Fuse relay is faulty
Another possible problem is a faulty relay. Some car modifications are equipped with a relay that monitors the battery charge light on the instrument panel. As soon as the relay fails, the indicator does not work either.
Fuse relay VAZ 2107
To test the relay, you should arm yourself with a multimeter. They measure the current at the positive output of the relay. If the voltage is less than 6V, then there is clearly a problem with the generating device. If the value is even higher, then the relay is faulty. It needs replacing.
Thus, finding out the reason why the battery light does not light is extremely important for adjusting the indicator and protecting the car from more serious malfunctions.
Before starting diagnostics
An important point in deciding why the VAZ 2107 or 2106 battery charging light is on is the very fact that voltage is supplied to the battery from the generator. In other words, if it does not reach the battery at all, there is nothing to be surprised about. The lamp must light in such a situation. But if the battery charging light is on, but there is charging, it will be a little more difficult to solve this problem.
Our first priority is to determine whether voltage is supplied to the battery. This is not at all difficult to do, especially since this requires only one device - a voltmeter or multimeter turned on in its mode. We start the car engine, raise the hood and measure the voltage at the battery terminals with the generator running. If all elements of the system are working properly, the voltmeter should produce 13.6-14.2 V, and no less. This is a working indicator for normal battery charging. If the voltage is below these values, then there is some kind of malfunction.
Checking fuses of VAZ 2106 - 2107 with a multimeter
You also need to know how to check a fuse in a car with a multimeter because in some cases replacing it does not eliminate the malfunction; the circuit needs a more thorough check. Usually its failure is visible to the naked eye, but in some cases the break can be detected only after an instrumental check. To do this, use a car tester or even a simple voltmeter to measure direct current.
- We attach the probes to the fuse.
- Next, using simple manipulations, we melt the wiring inside the fuse. Therefore, we made a non-working fuse out of a working fuse. What won’t you do for a good article!? :-). Again we apply the probes to the fuse and look at the behavior of the multimeter.
- The resistance is infinitely large, we do not hear any sound signal like “peep”. The fuse is broken. It can be thrown into the trash bin.
