After 5 years of driving a 16-valve engine, I switched to an 8-valve engine - I’m telling you about my observations

Today I want to share my observations with you. Let's not beat around the bush, but get right down to business. The first car I traded was a VAZ 2112 with a 16-valve engine.

At one time my parents gave it to me. At that time, I still had very little understanding of cars. For me, the main characteristics were engine power and car dynamics.

This was quite enough for me in the “twelfth”. I even considered the 16-valve engine to be the best of its kind. Although he repeatedly gave me “surprises”. And this manifested itself in a torn timing belt and bent valves. I don’t even remember how many such unpleasant moments there were.

After five years of using the car, to put it mildly, I’m tired of always digging under the hood. And I wanted something new. This time the choice fell on the brand new Kalina. And from the first day of using the car, I was pleasantly surprised. If we compare the two cars, I would like to highlight some points.

How to convert an 8 valve engine to a 16 valve Installation features

The bolts may be visually very different from each other, but do not be alarmed. Modified bolts must be used.

Such bolts have the following characteristics:

  1. The diameter is equal to an 8 valve bolt;
  2. The length is 16 valve.

To make it easier for these bolts to fit into the hole, they should be pre-drilled. If you install the modified bolts according to all the rules and as carefully as possible, then the reliability of the engine can only be envied.

When the car owner thinks that he is not able to perform this operation on his own, then it is better for him to seek help from qualified craftsmen with sufficient experience. They will definitely do everything right and as it should be.

An additional option to increase the power of the car is to tune the exhaust manifold. This is a great way to increase the power of your vehicle a little more.

Cylinder head modification

Installing a 16-valve engine on a VAZ 2109 will be much more difficult if you replace individual parts.

You will need:

  • A 16-valve cylinder head with a corresponding receiver (the kit must include a manifold with a knock sensor, a throttle valve and a pressure switch);
  • another fuel supply system: gas tank, fuel line, ramp with suitable injectors;
  • electronics kit - wiring, controller;
  • new sensors for thermostat, oil level, crankshaft position, phases;
  • mechanics: thermostat, pulleys for the camshaft, pistons with finished rings and pins, connecting rods, pulley for the crankshaft;
  • complete replacement of the exhaust system;
  • power supply: generator with suitable tensioners, generator drive;
  • other parts: throttle pipes, idle speed regulator, housing for the oil pump with a cast-in mounting location for the crankshaft sensor.

All parts must be suitable in power to work with a 16-valve engine and injection system. The kit is impressive, and there is even more work to complete the VAZ 2109 with 16 valves. Engine conversion begins:

The motor is ready for use.

It’s easier to install a power unit from a VAZ 2112. Of course, you will need a crane to pull out the engine itself, but this is nothing compared to the work that will have to be done to modify the “nine” unit.

Quite a lot of drivers are interested in how difficult it is to install a 16-valve engine on a VAZ 2109. After all, such engines are more efficient than the standard ones installed on the VAZ. This power unit makes you feel much more comfortable on the road. After all, engines with 16 valves are more modern. Such a rework is the most justified and logically sound.

At the same time, it practically does not require complex equipment; there is no need to bore the block and do other things. At the same time, all work is carried out quite quickly and without any interference.

can be done in 2 ways. Each has its own pros and cons. Therefore, you can choose one of these methods:

  • Installation of the whole unit;
  • Replacing the cylinder head.

The final choice depends on your goals and capabilities.
If you have a complete and serviceable engine, you can install it. Otherwise, when buying parts from scratch, it is better to install a new head. To remake your "nine" it is best to use a motor from a VAZ 2112

. They are almost identical. The differences are only in small details. But these nuances are precisely what make this engine more modern. What is important for you is that this engine fits perfectly into the mounts. In this case, you can even use the original box and clutch basket. Next, we will analyze these methods in more detail.

Engine Installation

Let's start with the simplest option - installing a whole motor in the "nine". To do this, in addition to the unit itself, you will need a steel or copper fuel pipe and a gas tank. It is advisable to take the engine with a body kit. So it will cost much less. The installation work is carried out in the following way:

  • First, the old motor is dismantled, here everything happens according to the usual scheme;
  • We are preparing the new engine for installation. To do this, you need to replace all consumables. Usually they change seals, gaskets, belts;
  • The power unit is put in place and attached to the pillows;
  • They installed a tank from 2112. It fits perfectly. The difference is in the design of the fuel pump and the presence of sensors. If you don’t have such a tank at hand, you can leave your original one. But you will have to install an external fuel pump from the Volga
    ;
  • The next step is to install the fuel line. It is best to use copper tubing. It's more flexible. If you decide to install steel, then heat it on fire before fitting. This will allow you to bend it as needed without any problems;
  • Wiring is being installed. On cars younger than 2002, no modifications will have to be made. There is already a hole for the wires coming from the injector, as well as other elements necessary for fastening. If the car is older, you will have to cut the hole yourself. Studs are placed under the bottom for attaching the absorber and gasoline filter;
  • The wiring will have to be redone. Some sensors have short wires. In this case, we lengthen them;
  • To install the generator you will have to buy new mountings, otherwise you will not be able to install it;
  • The box won't fit a little. You need to try it on and grind off the extra corners with a grinder. It's a matter of a couple of minutes;
  • The starter installed on 2109 has 11 teeth, it will not converge with the flywheel. Therefore, replace the bendix, take one with 9 teeth;
  • The exhaust system will also have to be overhauled and adjusted.

In general, the work of installing such an engine is not too difficult.
In practice, it is not too different from replacing a conventional power unit. Replacing the cylinder head

Compared to replacing an engine, this work is more complex. However, both options have common actions. This applies to installing the tank and connecting the wiring. But there are also enough differences; the work is done as follows:

  • First, the engine is removed from the car and disassembled. To do this, remove the cylinder head, pan, dismantle the pistons;
  • New pistons from 2112 are installed. They have more reinforced connecting rods, and they also have recesses for the valves;
  • Replace the fuel pump;
  • Shorten the cylinder head mounting bolts. 12 holes are drilled in the new cylinder head;
  • A hole of 8 is drilled in the block and a thread is cut

Tuning is not just about changing the appearance of a car, as many people think. In fact, revisions often concern the technical component. Someone makes changes to the exhaust system, changes elements of the factory engine.

But there is a more drastic, expensive and interesting option - change the engine. With the new engine you get different technical characteristics, increased power, increased maximum speed, better acceleration.

Replacing a motor is a fairly serious step that requires thinking through every stage, from choosing a new motor to the consequences that such work may result in.

Maintenance


This power unit is not demanding on service, so the oil in the VAZ 2115 engine is changed every 15 thousand kilometers, and it is possible to use inexpensive semi-synthetic and mineral oil.

We only note the need to replace the timing belt, which is done every 50 thousand kilometers.

One of the serious shortcomings is the lack of hydraulic compensators, which forces the car owner to adjust the valve clearance manually every 10 thousand kilometers.

To perform this service work, the valve cover must be removed and the clearances measured and adjusted. This is quite a complex service job and it is difficult to do it yourself.

Conversion of an 8 valve engine into a 16 valve VAZ 2114

During the process of improving the engine, it is necessary to modify the bolts. They are used to secure the 16 valve head. To modernize a VAZ engine, there is no need to change the cylinder block, but the head still needs to be changed. In order for each bolt to fit securely into the head mounting hole, it should be adjusted not only in diameter, but also in length.

Important information. The holes that can be found in the gasket also need some work. They should perfectly match the size of the bolts. If this is not done, the level of engine reliability will decrease significantly.

After this you should change:

  • first the pistons;

This must be done while assembling the cylinders.

Now it’s time to refine and adjust the wiring.

It is important to see the difference in the structure of 16 valve pistons from 8 valve pistons. In addition, the location of the sensors also differs. This means that it may be necessary to extend the wiring.

After the engine is assembled, the wiring needs to be finalized. If the car owner would not like to incur extra financial expenses, then he needs to leave the ignition module, and then connect the module using high-voltage wires. This is the easiest way to save money, so don't ignore it.

What's new and what remains from its predecessors

The VAZ 2115 has an adjustable steering column, effective interior heating and an on-board driver warning system about closing the door locks, leaving the ignition key in the lock, the level of oil and coolant in the engine, and extreme wear of the brake pads. If you compare the appearance of the VAZ 2115 and the VAZ 21099, you can immediately notice that the updated model differs in many respects. The design of the car has become more interesting; it fully complies with modern requirements and the main trends in the automotive industry. The car acquired a streamlined shape and smooth lines, the front and rear parts of the car have changed. The shape of the hood has become more convex, and the headlights and fenders of the car highlight the updated design. The roof and doors remained the same as the progenitor of this model - VAZ 21099. The rear and front bumpers were painted in body color. An additional “stop” signal has been created on the trunk spoiler in the VAZ 2115 model. The volume of the luggage compartment has become significantly larger due to a change in the shape of the trunk lid, which opens the opening all the way to the bumper.

In addition, new elements appeared: door moldings, the same color as the body, and fairings on the sills. Updates are also obvious in the lighting technology of the VAZ 2115 model, one of which is fog lights. Such changes will certainly be appreciated by even the most demanding motorists. The improvements carried out had a positive impact on the popularity of the VAZ 2115 model. The car fully complies with all the criteria and trends of modern automobile fashion. Experts note that the design update also contributed to improving the aerodynamic performance of the VAZ 2115.

In order to perform this simple operation, the engine must be disassembled. It is worth warning that many parts will have to be replaced.

These include:

  • antifreeze tube;
  • oil pump;
  • oil sump;
  • various sensors;
  • crankshaft and much more.

Despite the impressive list, the method described below will really help make the car even more powerful than before.


Reworking the VAZ 2114 engine

Electrical equipment has also been improved. Now the car's package includes: electric windows for the front doors, as well as fog lights and heated seats (only on “luxury” modifications). All versions are equipped with an on-board monitoring system that allows you to monitor the proper operation of lamps, oil level, brake pad wear, and the level of coolant and washer fluids, directly from the driver’s seat. At high speeds (namely 180-200 km/h) the road holds up well. The cross-country ability is very good for its class, the car is light and tall. Spare parts and repairs are relatively inexpensive. The trunk is very large, which is good.
