Fuel consumption Grant Automatic or Manual • Driving style

Only after leaving the salon, I could say I was shocked by the “robot” - everything that was written about it turned out to be true.

How I chose between Polo, Rapid, Solaris, Rio, Creta and Capture (I don’t think I forgot anyone :)) and why, after testing a bunch of options, I still bought the Vesta Cross station wagon, I described in detail here. Now it's time to share first impressions. First of all, from the long-suffering robot. I’ll say right away that at first we couldn’t find a common language with him, “not at all.”

General opinion of buyers Grants with automatic transmission

Not only the level of fuel consumption, but also the reliability of the corresponding components may depend on this aspect. Here, the manufacturer strongly recommends using only 95 gasoline. It is this brand, according to numerous observations of owners and experts, as evidenced by many reviews from owners, that can extend the time until the next required refueling. We should not forget the fact that the primary and important indicator for fuel is its quality, and not the octane number. Similar to the proverb: “Check seven times, and fill once”!

Test drive Lada Granta with automatic transmission: catching up with time

It may be late, it may be “overseas”, it may not be new, but an automatic transmission has finally appeared on a production domestic car. The Kolesa.Ru portal rode the wave of technical progress on the Lada Granta, the first from Tolyatti to receive an automatic transmission.

To tell the truth, there have been attempts to equip the cars of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant with automatic transmissions before, but it was still not possible to bring them to a victorious end: those transmissions were either structurally unsuitable and were designed for more powerful engines, or they turned out to be too expensive, which in the end greatly increased the cost of the car itself. But a suitable box was still found. It was a four-stage “hydromechanics” from the Japanese company Jatco. Economical and simple, it has been installed on Nissan passenger cars for more than two decades (!) and has proven itself well during this time. But Lada is not Nissan. For now, at least.

The photographs do not deceive: the neat handle of the “automatic machine” is equally pleasant both to look at and to the touch. And you can handle the lever itself with confidence: even if you accidentally move the selector from position “D” to “R” while driving, the box will not break and will engage reverse gear only after a complete stop.

How will a Japanese automatic transmission behave in our car? With this thought in mind, I approached the test car, which I managed to identify from several Grants only by pressing the key fob button - the “automatic” Lada Granta is modest and outwardly no different from its analogues with “mechanics”. And inside, contrary to expectations, there were very few visible changes. It differs from the Lada Granta Norma, which Kolesa.Ru already tested in the winter, only in the addition of a front passenger airbag, air conditioning and an “automatic” set in the form of two pedals and a Logan transmission selector. Otherwise, everything is familiar: the same high and invariably upright driver's position, the same flat springy seats, which even on a flat road, for unknown reasons, make passengers jump funny; motor vibrations with noise, and they retained their signature frequencies. In general, even with an automatic transmission, the Lada Granta will not let the driver get bored and relax. But what about the “box” itself?

It’s hardly noticeable, but the ground clearance of the “automatic” Grant has been reduced by two centimeters (to 140 mm). This event even forced me to give up the idea of climbing onto a high curb for the sake of a spectacular photo, which greatly upset our photographer.

Good. Honestly, it's good. And she moves through the gears quickly and gently, and was not noticed to be excessively thoughtful; even provocations such as sudden acceleration and braking do not confuse her. But it's not just about her. We must not forget that the most powerful 16-valve VAZ engine is diligently chugging along with the automatic transmission. It is precisely thanks to its 98 horsepower that the slightest press on the gas pedal gives rise to a sharp kick - “just right” for heavy city traffic. And it doesn’t matter that the “box” has neither manual nor sports mode: during the entire test, the hand never reached for the button to disable the highest fourth gear in order to give the sedan more dynamics. Now there is no agony even when engaging first and reverse gears - the “automatic” made us forget everything that we cursed at the “mechanics” for.

Brake system

Some complaints from owners of early production (before 2014-2015) of the car were caused by the brake system in this car. The brake pedal was a little stiff and was also “uninformative.” Regardless of the force of pressing the pedal, the reaction speed remained almost the same. At the same time, the pads did not work immediately, so the braking system requires a long time to get used to. Collective appeals reached the manufacturer’s company, and in 2014, at a press conference, the leading tester of the Lada Kalina project, Alexander Teryanov, said that work on adjusting the brake system did not stop. By the way, the work was planned on a fairly large scale:

  • increasing the service brake on the front brake mechanism;
  • selection of the best brake booster characteristics;
  • selection of the best characteristics of the main brake cylinder.

Renault specialists joined this process and set themselves the task of improving the car’s maneuverability and smooth ride of the Kalina and Grant family of cars.

By the way, today, in our fleet there are only Grants produced no older than 2014-2015. And Lada Granta cars with an automatic transmission were purchased by us, one might say, quite recently - manufactured in 2016. Perhaps this is why we currently have no negative feedback from our clients on this issue.

Test lamp method

Unlike classic synchronizers, the new type of synchronizers are much more reliable, and since, according to statistics, the first and second gears are the most loaded, this solution made it possible to increase the reliability parameter of the new unit. Due to the high cost and high fuel costs, cars with a robotic gearbox are in less demand among potential Lada Granta owners.

Motor and gearbox - important technical questions

The updated Granta with 1.6 engines has one big plus in common. The manufacturer has taken care of those owners who do not want to change belts on time or install low-quality components. In this case, a broken timing belt does not cause the valves to meet the pistons. The motors are very easy to maintain and unpretentious. 98 forces turn out to be quite a sufficient power resource for this car, even taking into account the small reserve for the automatic.

The machine gun itself on Grant has the following features:

  • the unit has 4 gears and was developed by the Japanese corporation Jatco, which is known for the most reliable and durable automatic transmissions for all global car manufacturers;
  • the box is simple and reliable, there will be no problems with its operation for a long time, the machine turned out to be very impressive precisely in terms of reliability and potential durability;
  • the automatic switches with slight jolts, this is its factory feature, but several days of travel will bring you to get used to this feature, there is no discomfort and there will not be;
  • the automatic takes a little away from the engine power, but overall everything remains very sane, the dynamics in urban conditions are sufficient for comfortable movement on the roads;
  • there are modes P, R, D and 1, 2 - in the last two cases the box will work only in first or only in first and second gears, respectively, this is very convenient for difficult conditions.

The gearbox and engine were a great match. Unless you have to monitor your consumption, curbing your desire to press the pedal harder. The average consumption in the city is 12 liters. But on the highway, a Granta with an automatic transmission can handle 7.5 liters without much strain. Otherwise, the car remains quite primitive and cheap, but the combination of engine and gearbox is really pleasing. If the company continues to update its most budget car at this rate, it will definitely become a big seller.

Reviews of the Lada Grant automatic... Driving style

By the way, it is the long-term rental of a Lada Granta automatic, as it seems to us, that will allow you to take a closer look at the car and make a more informed decision than any short-term test drive. To tell the truth, there were attempts to equip the cars of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant with an automatic machine before, but it was still not possible to bring them to a victorious end; those transmissions were either structurally unsuitable and were designed for more powerful engines, or they turned out to be too expensive, which ultimately greatly increased the the cost of the car itself.

Design and service life of the Jatco JF414E or AY-K3 machine

Many people mistakenly believe that this is some kind of ancient automatic transmission that is installed on budget cars produced for third world countries. However, this is absolutely not true. It was first introduced only in 2010 as a promising automatic transmission of the new Nissan Micra (March) for the Asian market.

Thanks to its simple and proven design, the machine has earned a reputation as a reliable and unpretentious unit, which, with gentle operation and timely maintenance, can cover more than 500,000 kilometers.

At the same time, the box really does not like sudden starts and prolonged movement at high speed. Therefore, a young and hot driver runs the risk of not driving a car with this transmission until the end of the warranty.

Reviews of Lada Granta automatic

Positive
1.Vladimir: the transmission is functional, picks up from the bottom, picks up speed very quickly from the start at traffic lights.
2.Kirill: a vigorous start from a standing start, which is convenient and practical in megacities. Fuel consumption is 1.0 liter more than the mechanical type, but for me this is not significant.
3.Vyacheslav: the dynamics of picking up the lows is clearly noticeable on the machine. Unlike a number of other brands, including European ones, lethargy is not typical.
4.Ivan: The automatic transmission works quite smoothly, the moment of gear shifting is practically not felt. What is missing is sound insulation. Of course, it is present, but the thickness of the felt upholstery is not enough for complete silence.
5.Sergey: It’s very nice that when you sharply press the accelerator pedal, the “Kickdown” mode, the automatic transmission quickly shifts the gear to a lower position. You can feel the speed of transition when overtaking or sharp maneuvers.
6.Oleg: despite the lack of manual control in the automatic transmission, the manufacturer left manual control for the first two speeds. Very convenient and practical when overcoming road obstacles,
7.Vyacheslav: the machine has a mechanical “Overdrive” button preinstalled; turning it off helps to operate the engine at higher speeds. This is very convenient and practical when overcoming road obstacles, snow drifts, and shallow fords.
Negative
1.Alexander: despite numerous modifications to the Zhatko automatic transmission, vibrations and increased noise at speeds over 100 km/h are still present. This causes discomfort; the driver is forced to raise his voice so that passengers can hear him.
2.Ignat: a 16-valve engine is installed together with the automatic transmission, the maximum torque is set at the “top”. During rapid acceleration, the automatic transmission pulls the torque to the top, the tachometer needle borders on the red zone. At such moments, the roar of the engine in the cabin can be clearly heard.
3.Dmitry: during long climbs, the automatic transmission systematically shifts to lower gears, pushing the tachometer needle into the red zone.
4.Vasily: Unfortunately, Zhatko does not have a manual gear shift mode. This is very inconvenient if you frequently use the machine on rough terrain. Those who live on the periphery will understand me.
5.Vladimir: Zhatko’s gearbox is of the direct type. The “Drive” position is located third from the beginning. To move the selector to the “Drive” position, you need to take your attention away from the road. There is a preset indicator on the dashboard to indicate the current gear, but the display size is very small.
6.Victor: I don’t recommend this type of automatic transmission for the Lada Granta, as it’s already at 45,000 km. Replaced gaskets and solenoids. The torque converter clutches were also damaged.
7.Vasily: my sensors and the electrical ROM board of the automatic transmission “flyed”. The reason is a manufacturing defect. Fortunately, they replaced it free of charge under warranty.

Reviews of the Lada Granta Automatic - the pros and cons of this car Many drivers working with the delivery of products or promotional materials pointed out the problems of traveling in populated areas with poor-quality roads. Moreover, it is more difficult precisely in the cold season, because in the heat the owner only needs to monitor the engine temperature and the operation of the air conditioner.
Reviews of the Lada Granta automatic - the pros and cons of this car According to the manufacturer, the service life of the switching unit is at least ten years, all wiring, terminals and the control board are reliably protected from dust, moisture and low temperatures, which made it possible to expand the temperature range of use of the gearbox . Despite minor shortcomings and problems in the operation of the model, the general opinion is positive and most buyers recommend it to their compatriots.

How does it feel to operate a Lada Granta 1.6 automatic transmission?

Let's be honest, there aren't many expectations from this car. Most potential buyers only expect that the car will drive and not break down. No buyer fully expects comfort and quality of travel from this car. The Lada Granta, in its updated version with an automatic transmission, has made a little progress in providing comfort and ride quality. The car has become more beautiful and comfortable, comfort has increased due to minor changes in design and construction.

But the car still has many disadvantages, and you need to work with them:

  • at a speed of 100 km/h and above, the car unpleasantly moves off the road, the chassis does not want to hold the asphalt, as a result, the car wanders across the entire width of the lane, you always need to catch it;
  • the hum from the engine or gearbox is quite noticeable, and sound insulation will not help here, you need to refine the design and remove extraneous sounds, which are very annoying;
  • the automatic transmission was adapted for this car, and the adaptation from AvtoVAZ is felt - when accelerating smoothly from a speed of 50-60 km/h on the highway, the gearbox begins to behave irresponsibly;
  • the brakes remain very mysterious - you need to spend the first hours behind the wheel of the car carefully, as the braking is either harsh or non-existent, and this is a real problem for the driver;
  • The liftback is a little inferior to the sedan in terms of ride comfort - from the trunk every now and then you can hear the sounds of clicking tools, the spare tire moving in the niche and other mysterious noises.

You won’t be able to make any serious claims against this machine, since its cost speaks for itself. On the other hand, for a poor Russian family, paying 620,000 rubles for a car will be a real problem. So you shouldn’t be fooled by the fact that the car is very cheap. The AvtoVAZ company is managed by the Renault-Nissan alliance, so today these are cars that are designed to make money. And savings on very important and necessary things continue to be present in the manufacturer’s cars.

LadaGranta 1.6 (87 hp)

Especially sharply increased fuel consumption per 100 km can be observed in the cold season.
Along with gasoline, the consumption of other fluids of systems and components (oil, etc.) also increases. For LADA Granta, gasoline consumption in a given time period can increase to 2 liters. The main reason (provided the power system is working properly) is the need to warm up the engine in frosty temperatures. Indirect factors include driving on ice and the type of tires used (studs, Velcro, etc.). Having decided which gasoline to fill, the motorist can go to a gas station to get fuel, where a professional gas station attendant will come to the rescue. However, in some cases he will have to fill the gasoline himself.

In order not to be left without fuel at the most unpredictable moment, it is important to constantly check the fill level of the fuel tank.

Refueling may be required along the way, so you should always have a canister and funnel with you

You should refuel when there is less than half the tank left. Many inexperienced drivers prefer to drive until the light on the dashboard lights up, indicating that the tank is almost empty. This practice is quite risky and can significantly harm the motor system. Gasoline cools the fuel pump, which, if overheated, will simply burst. If the tank is filled according to the rules, you can safely go to the gas station.

When approaching a gas station, it is important to park the car correctly in front of the gas station with the side on which the gas tank cap is located. It is advisable to park the car in such a way that the gas tank and gas station are at the same level. After this, you should unscrew the gas tank cap and insert a refueling nozzle of the appropriate brand into it.

After this, you need to make a payment and indicate how many liters of fuel are required. Returning to the car, you need to press the lever on the gun, then the fuel will be supplied automatically.

At the same time, the motorist must know how to drain gasoline from the tank if he comes across a low-quality product. This can be done in three main ways.

As a fuel tank in any car, including the Lada Granta, there is a special container that allows you to ensure the safety of fuel. In most modern cars, the filling tank is located in the rear part under the bottom. This option was not chosen by manufacturers by chance, since it allows them to achieve the required weight distribution. In the Lada Granta model, the tank is made of plastic.

Advantages • Driving style

In general, they, like many other proprietary flaws such as uneven body gaps, door windows that do not open all the way and a characteristic smell, will not surprise anyone. Besides these features, everything else is an advantage of robotic gearboxes; they are simpler and cheaper to maintain, help save fuel due to the absence of losses in the hydromechanical actuator, they can be moved in tow and get out of difficult places using rocking back and forth.
