The American automobile manufacturing agglomerate Chevrolet is trying to spread its “tentacles” around the world. And Russia is no exception - Aveo is already firmly rooted in the domestic market and is familiar to every Russian firsthand. The budget category of the car is literally headed by this brand.
Many Aveo owners are even offended by the description “budget”. And this is justified, since the level of comfort and the presence of modern additions in the trim levels are incomparable with other cars in this category.

However, most of the credit goes to the Aveo, which has a short row that doesn't allow much acceleration in the initial stages. And this is the main disadvantage of the Chevrolet Aveo - at speeds over 100 km/h, even in fifth gear, the cabin is very noisy due to the high engine speeds.
In addition, using the Chevrolet gearbox is quite inconvenient - the lever has long strokes and a completely indistinct moment for switching on the speed. It’s not always possible to understand when you can release the clutch and press the gas pedal again - sometimes you have to “re-throw” in neutral in vain. The engine has very high power, which allows it to cross the 100 km/h threshold in a little more than 10 seconds. At the same time, even during rapid acceleration, you can talk in the Rio’s cabin without raising your voice.
The KIA Rio gearbox is also tuned for comfort - its stretched gears allow you to maintain a minimum level of revolutions when driving at any speed. However, on the highway this sometimes turns into unpleasant moments - if you need to make a quick overtake, you have to select the right gear in advance, in which the engine will allow you to safely complete the maneuver. Nevertheless, the KIA Rio is certainly a more driver's car, thanks in part to its excellent combination of comfort and dynamics for a budget car.
Who takes a punch better?
Suspension testing is traditional for our country. KIA Rio, despite being comfortable on smooth asphalt, when the slightest irregularity appears, it begins to transmit shocks and vibrations into the cabin, which are especially acutely felt on the steering wheel. But such rigidity of the KIA is completely justified - thanks to it, the car behaves perfectly both on a straight line and in turns, clearly following the movement of the driver’s hands. In addition, the Rio has no roll during active driving - this has a positive effect on active safety.

What about the Chevrolet Aveo? Its suspension is much softer and allows you to confidently pass small joints of the road surface or cracks in the asphalt. I would like to start the review of these “workhorses” not with the exteriors, but with the interiors - after all, they are the ones that will be constantly examined by members of the family that owns them. The new generation Chevrolet Aveo, from the driver’s point of view, resembles either a motorcycle or a computer simulator. Before the Aveo driver's eyes is a narrow dashboard with a huge tachometer, which has a bright backlight, and a digital speedometer window. The Chevrolet tachometer needle in a calm position looks straight down - like on sports cars, and large numbers and clearly visible scale divisions do not distract you while driving. But with the Aveo speedometer, the situation is much worse - in bright sunlight, the brightness of the LCD monitor is no longer enough, and sometimes it takes a few seconds to understand how fast you are moving.
The interior of the Chevrolet Aveo is modest and tasteful
The center console of the Chevrolet Aveo is curved downwards with a fancy chevron, but this does not in the least reduce its functionality - all the buttons are located correctly, and their view is not blocked by the steering wheel. The Chevrolet Aveo is filled with drawers for small items in which you can store small money, a set of fuses, glasses, and all the essentials - however, an A4 sheet can only fit into the glove box when folded. Sitting in, you feel like you’re in some kind of Volkswagen or Skoda - all around is black and gray plastic, as well as the classic proportions of the front panel. However, when choosing a KIA Rio or Chevrolet Aveo, adults with a calm character will still prefer the first car due to the high quality of materials, as well as perfectly adjusted ergonomics. The sloping silhouette of the Aveo, in which the interior appears to be a kind of hump, is a rather controversial stylistic decision, but this layout is dictated by practicality and the need for rational use of every millimeter of length. It’s worth looking under the Chevrolet front bumper, but here we are faced with an unpleasant surprise - the ground clearance is only 115 mm
. With such an indicator, the Chevrolet Aveo is not only contraindicated to drive onto curbs - it will have to go around every bump on the asphalt swollen from the summer heat.
KIA Rio gives rise to associations no longer with the sky, but with space - and the car somewhat resembles a UFO. The tall rectangular headlights, which are outlined by the lines of the front bumper and L-shaped fog lights, look very stylish. The KIA body lines are practically indistinguishable from the Chevrolet Aveo - the desire for a practical single-volume layout can be seen here too. The small ventilation grilles in the front fenders look somewhat inappropriate - they seem to be alien elements installed in the process of inept tuning. And the KIA Rio's ground clearance is fine - the base 157 mm is enough to ignore small obstacles and move freely in the yard.

The original South Korean registration of the Aveo model is not accidental: after official Seoul liquidated the Daewoo company, its passenger car production division was bought by General Motors. The American corporation decided to produce budget cars for developing countries at Daewoo production facilities.
Since the existing model range of the South Korean company did not suit the new owners, it was decided to develop new models, among which was Aveo. Initially, the car bore the name Daewoo Kalos, and in other markets it was branded under Holden, Pontiac, Suzuki and Chevrolet.
The first generation was shown in early 2002. And by the end of the same year, the car arrived at dealerships in 120 countries. By the way, Aveo was assembled in eleven countries, including Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
The model that replaced the Daewoo Lanos received a new T200 platform (wheelbase 2480 mm), exterior design from Italdesign, and three body modifications - a 3- and 5-door hatchback and a 4-door sedan.
The design of the cars sold in the Asian and American markets was different from that of the models that were sold in European countries. The differences were in the design of the headlights. For the Asian and American markets, Aveo came with separate turn indicators located below the headlight block, and for the European market - integrated into a common block.
The car was equipped only with gasoline engines. Engines of different sizes were offered for different markets. Thus, a line of power units with a volume of 1.2, 1.4 and 1.5 liters was presented on the European market. The 1.6 liter petrol unit was installed on cars sold in North America, Asia, Australia and Ukraine. These engines were coupled with a 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission.
In 2005, the model was facelifted, and manufacturers updated only the sedan.
The dimensions of the car and the wheelbase have increased slightly (by 9 mm). Traditionally, the changes affected the front and rear parts of the car (the shape of the false radiator grille, headlights, rear optics, front and rear bumpers has changed). The Aveo sedan also has different door handles.
Presented in 2007 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the updated hatchback already had the outlines of the future Aveo generation. Where is the Chevrolet Aveo assembled?
The front part of the car was radically redesigned: the radiator grille was divided into upper and lower halves, and a Chevrolet was installed on the bridge separating them. The headlights have changed, becoming broken-rectangular.
The rear brake lights were also updated, with semicircular reversing lights mounted in the center, and semicircular turn indicators above them. To match the new optics, the shape of the rear bumper was changed, in which a stylized false grille appeared.

The presentation of a conceptual model of the new generation of this car took place in 2022 at the Paris Motor Show. The updated Aveo is built on the concern’s fundamentally new Gamma II platform, the base of which is 45 mm longer than that of the previous T200. The model has changed in dimensions. The body length of the sedan increased by 81 mm (from 4318 to 4399 mm), and that of the hatchback by 160 mm (from 3880 to 4040 mm). The car's width has expanded by 25 mm (from 1710 to 1735 mm). And the car added 12 mm in height (from 1505 to 1517 mm).
The exterior design has also changed - it has become more aggressive, primarily due to the new embossed hood of the headlights with separate optics and the “scowling” false radiator grille. It is divided, like the 2007 hatchback, into two halves - upper and lower.
The bumper has a different shape, as do the niches for the fog lights located in it. The wheel arches have become more convex and athletic. The design of the trunk lid, rear optics and bumper has completely changed. The exterior of the hatchback in the front part is no different from the sedan.
At the rear, compared to the 2007 hatchback, there have been noticeable changes: the tailgate and taillights have a different shape.
Dramatic changes have occurred in the interior of the model. First of all, the space in the cabin and luggage compartment has increased (due to increased dimensions) (by 100 liters for the sedan, and by 70 for the hatchback). The interior trim materials and seat upholstery have been significantly improved. The design of the cockpit has changed significantly.
The analog instrument panel was replaced by an electronic-analog one (analog tachometer, digital odometer), and a new steering wheel appeared.
The center console has been significantly transformed with plastic edging on the sides in a “chrome” look. A niche for small items appeared on top, and a new audio system was located in the center. The climate system control levers have also changed, a double-leaf glove box has appeared, in the upper compartment of which there is a connector for an iPod.
In addition, a niche has appeared under the front passenger seat, where it is convenient to put documents. Already in the basic version, the model is equipped with driver and front passenger airbags, an immobilizer, central locking with remote control, air conditioning, and an audio system with controls on the steering wheel.
The new Aveo is equipped with modern, economical engines, including a 1.3-liter diesel engine produced by Fiat (supplied to all markets except the CIS countries). Moreover, the diesel engine is available in two modifications – developing 74 and 94 horsepower, respectively.
Among gasoline engines there are engines of 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 liters. Models with 1.4 liter turbocharged and 1.8 liter naturally aspirated engines are supplied only to the US market.
On the CIS market, the model is available with a 1.6 liter engine, which is combined with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic.

The Engine magazine continues to study the Russian secondary market, selecting inexpensive and interesting options. Having scoured ad sites with the search criterion for the most recent options up to half a million rubles, we came across tempting offers for the second generation Chevrolet Aveo model (T300).
The first Chevrolet Aveo proved to be a simple car, with a not very comfortable interior and mediocre driving characteristics, but at the same time a relatively modern, well-equipped and, most importantly, quite reliable car. All this made the car very popular.
Let us recall that the first generation Aveo competed with the Renault Logan in the mid-2000s, and in many respects it looked noticeably more attractive than the “French”, although it was a little more expensive. For a new sedan with a 1.4 engine in a good configuration with air conditioning, they then asked for 360,000 rubles.
The second generation appeared in 2022, and reached Russia in large numbers already in 2021, with Kaliningrad assembly, which a year later moved to the capacity of the GAZ plant.
The car turned out to be incredibly bold in terms of design: aggressive style, open dual head optics and motorcycle features in the interior decoration immediately attracted a new, younger audience to it. Moreover, the model appeared in the next part of the blockbuster “Transformers”, which further fueled interest in it.
One way or another, the model has gathered her audience, and today she has reached the age when it is customary to switch to something more serious. The first samples of Aveo II are already in their seventh year with a mileage of 150 thousand km, and the most recent copies of 2022, sold before GM left Russia, were just reaching their last kilometers and months of warranty.
Model release location
Chevrolet Aveo is an offshoot of General Motors GM Daewoo. The pilot version of the car was released in 2002. It “reached” Europe in 2005, and officially and fully launched in Russia in 2008. Since then, the Chevrolet Aveo has been crossing Russian roads in three “interpretations”:
- hatchback with three doors;
- five-door hatchback;
- sedan with four doors.
The assembly of third-generation vehicles has become a landmark for Russia. Since 2012, Chevrolet Aveo has been assembled in domestic factories.
A large-unit conveyor was specially designed in Kaliningrad, allowing complex work to be carried out in the automotive industry. It is quite difficult to determine visually whose assembly a particular car is made of. Since all processes are automated and as universal as possible.
The Chevrolet Aveo is still produced at the Kaliningrad plant. However, sales and popularity of the model led to the search for another production site in Russia. As a result, in 2013, the Gorky Automobile Plant officially launched a production process that included all stages.

The car is also produced at the Zaporozhye plant in Ukraine. The model is released under the name ZAZ Vida and all the equipment is completely identical to the manufacturer’s model range.

It is very difficult to determine whose assembly is better - domestic or foreign, until it has been tested for a certain time. Driving style is no less important, because each driver has his own special style, and this also affects the opinion about the car. For the most part, many reviews about the Chevrolet Aveo chassis are unanimous and completely positive. The chassis withstands the “strength tests” of the condition of domestic roads.
Most of the complaints center on the body of the Aveo. Car owners are not satisfied with the quality of the paintwork, which allows corrosion even without scratches and dents. There is also a lot of dissatisfaction with the thickness of the metal, which cannot withstand even minimal collisions with curbs or fences, not to mention collisions.
Aveo is firmly rooted in the domestic market and is constantly strengthening its position. The vehicle's equipment certainly matters. But the concern’s reputation has repeatedly proven that it equips each of its production points with the highest quality equipment with full control of manufacturing and assembly. Therefore, there is no point in doubting that its quality will change depending on where the car is assembled. The main thing is to choose the right configuration and set of functional characteristics.
Better for family
Although the KIARio has very little rear seat room, it is still better for the modern family. In particular, the car will be ideal if you have to take it to school and extracurricular activities, as well as to the sea - they still don’t need a lot of space. Rio is reliable and stable, and also does not bother you with constant engine noise on the highway. But the Chevrolet Aveo is more suitable for individualists who have not yet managed to start a family - they will like the unusual instrument panel, as well as good front seats that allow them to feel confident even during active maneuvers. And the large rear sofa and the considerable size of the Chevrolet will come in handy for outings with friends.
South Korean Americans
Residents of Russia and Europeans, when asked which country produces Chevrolet cars, give a clear answer: Korea.
This is quite natural, since the lion's share of cars currently sold on the Russian and European markets are indeed assembled on South Korean assembly lines and are essentially nothing more than a continuation of the line of budget cars that existed under the auspices of the Korean brand Daewoo.
