How to change the steering wheel on classic VAZ 2101 models

The steering wheel in any car is a tool that allows the driver to easily control his “iron horse”. Of course, not only ease of maneuvers on the road, but also the safety of people in the cabin depends on the size of the steering wheel and its “obedience”.

  • How to change the steering gearbox on a VAZ 2106

    Owners of the VAZ 2106 believe that the steering gearboxes of the “sixes” are almost beyond repair. An exception is made only in case of wear of ball bearings, gaskets and seals. Then the car owner disassembles the gearbox and replaces the above parts with new ones. And in case of wear of a worm, gear or roller, there is only one solution: replace the entire gearbox, since it is not always possible to find on sale, for example, a worm shaft from a “six” gearbox or a gear. The reason is simple: the car was discontinued a long time ago and spare parts for it are becoming less and less every year. To remove the gearbox we need the following tools:

    • set of socket heads and wrenches;
    • special puller for steering rod;
    • set of spanners;
    • new steering gear;
    • rags.

    Sequencing

    Having prepared everything necessary, the car should be driven onto an overpass (or into a viewing hole). The wheels of the machine should be securely secured with shoes.

    1. The left front wheel of the car is lifted with a jack and removed. Access to steering rods is provided.
    2. Using a rag, the fingers on the steering rods are thoroughly cleaned of dirt.
    3. The rods are disconnected from the gear bipods. To do this, remove the fastening cotter pins on the rods, then unscrew the nuts with a spanner. After this, using a puller, the rod fingers are squeezed out of the steering bipod.
    4. The gear shaft is attached to the intermediate shaft, which will need to be disconnected. This is done using a 13-mm open-end wrench. The intermediate shaft is moved to the side.
    5. The gearbox itself is attached to the body with three 14mm bolts. They are unscrewed with an open-end wrench, the gearbox is removed and replaced with a new one. After this, the steering system is reassembled.

    Note

    : This vehicle has a non-standard steering wheel. Removal and installation procedures may vary slightly from standard.

    For this operation you will need the following tools: screwdriver, 24 mm socket, extension.

    1. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

    2. Set the front wheels to the straight-ahead position.

    3. Unscrew the three screws securing the decorative trim.

    4. Remove the decorative trim from the steering wheel.

    5. Unscrew the steering wheel mounting nut.

    6. Remove the steering wheel.

    7. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.

    Note

    : After installing the steering wheel, check that it is positioned correctly on the steering shaft.

    What kind of steering wheel can be put on the “six”

    Removing the steering wheel on a VAZ-2107
    Like the entire line of VAZ “classics”, the “six” has the widest possibilities for tuning and replacing various units. For example, if the driver wishes, the factory steering wheel can be replaced with a similar part from any other VAZ model. The only limitation is that you will have to spend a lot of time refining and adjusting the elements.

    The steering wheel from the VAZ 2108 is considered to be the closest in size to the 2106. The owners of the “sixes” themselves do not highly appreciate the feasibility of such a replacement: after all, it turns out that “the awl is changing to soap.” The most popular steering wheels are from Niva, as they are designed for a longer service life and have already proven themselves well in different operating conditions.

    Due to its design features, a V8 steering wheel can be installed on a VAZ 2106 without any problems, but many drivers have doubts about the feasibility of such a replacement

    A little about wooden rudders

    The classic steering wheel on any car is made of plastic. However, installing a wooden steering wheel is considered especially chic among drivers - the car’s interior becomes more presentable.

    However, it should be borne in mind that expensive pleasure will not make the car more pliable to drive - on the contrary, the wooden steering wheel is not suitable for sensitive driving. Therefore, when choosing such a product, you should be more attentive to traffic rules and drive carefully in icy conditions and on wet asphalt.

    The cost of a wooden steering wheel for a VAZ 2106 starts at 4 thousand rubles.

    Products made from natural wood add additional luxury and beauty to the car interior.

    Sports steering wheel

    Sports steering wheels are designed to give the interior a special style, and the car - maneuverability. However, when choosing this type of steering wheel, you should be as careful as possible, because initially the “six” was not designed for racing and drifting, and therefore a sports steering wheel will not be able to guarantee the driver maximum safety during maneuvers.

    The cost of a sports steering wheel starts at 1,600 rubles.

    The sports steering wheel makes driving more precise and faster

    How to disassemble the steering gear of the “six”

    How to level the steering wheel of a VAZ 2107

    If the driver decides not to change the gearbox on his “six”, but only replace the seals or bearings in it, then the gearbox will have to be almost completely disassembled. To do this, you need the following things:

    • large socket head 30;
    • puller for gearbox bipods;
    • flat screwdriver;
    • hammer;
    • vice.

    Sequence of work

    It should be said right away that a puller and a vice are the main tools when disassembling the gearbox. It is better not to start disassembling without them, since it will not be possible to replace these tools with anything.

    1. There is a fastening nut on the gearbox bipod. It is unscrewed with an open-end wrench. After this, the gearbox is installed in a vice, a puller is put on the bipod as shown in the photo, and the rod is carefully moved from the shaft with the puller.
    2. The plug is unscrewed from the oil filling hole. The oil from the gearbox housing is drained into some empty container. Then the adjustment nut is unscrewed from the gearbox, and the lock washer located under it is also removed.
    3. There are 4 mounting bolts on the top cover of the gearbox. They are unscrewed with a 14 key. The cover is removed.
    4. The traction shaft and its roller are removed from the gearbox.
    5. Now remove the cover from the worm gear. It is held on by four 14mm bolts, under it there is a thin sealing gasket, which should also be carefully removed.
    6. There is nothing holding the worm shaft anymore and it is carefully knocked out with a hammer from the gearbox housing along with the ball bearings.
    7. There is a large rubber seal in the worm shaft hole. It is convenient to remove it using a regular flat-head screwdriver.
    8. Using a hammer and a large 30mm wrench, knock out the second worm shaft bearing located in the gearbox housing.
    9. After this, all gearbox parts are inspected for breakdowns and mechanical wear. Worn parts are replaced with new ones, then the gearbox is assembled in the reverse order.

    Signs of breakdown of the gearbox and other elements of the steering system

    Instructions for replacing the instrument panel 2101 with 2106. VAZ 2101 how to remove the speedometer

    The steering gearbox on a VAZ 2106 very rarely fails alone. As a rule, a gearbox failure is preceded by the failure of several elements of the steering system, after which the gearbox itself breaks down. That is why it is better to consider the problems of this system as a whole. We list the most well-known signs of a breakdown of the control system on the “six”:

    • when turning the steering wheel, a characteristic grinding or loud creaking sound is heard from under the steering column;
    • the driver observes a constant leak of lubricant from the gearbox;
    • turning the steering wheel began to require more effort than before.

    Now let’s look at what exactly can cause the above symptoms and how to eliminate them.

    Steering system noise

    Here are the main causes of noise behind the steering column:

    • The clearance on the bearings installed in the steering wheel hubs has increased. Solution: adjust the gap, and in case of significant wear of the bearings, replace them completely;
    • The fastening nuts on the steering rod pins have become loose. It is these nuts that usually cause loud squeaking and grinding noises. Solution: tighten the nuts;
    • The gap between the bushings and the pendulum arm of the steering system has increased. Solution: replacing the bushings (and sometimes you have to change the bushing brackets if they are very worn);
    • The worm bearings in the gearbox are worn out. A grinding noise when turning wheels can also occur due to them. Solution: replace the bearings. And if the bearings are not worn out, it is necessary to adjust their clearances;
    • loosening the fastening nuts on the swing arms. Solution: tighten the nuts after placing the car wheels straight.

    Leakage of lubricant from the gearbox

    A lubricant leak indicates a violation of the seal of the device.

    Oil leaks are clearly visible on the steering gear housing

    Here's how it happens:

    • The seals on the bipod shaft or on the worm shaft are completely worn out. Solution: replace the seals (sets of these seals can be purchased at any spare parts store);
    • The bolts holding the steering system housing cover have become loose. Solution: tighten the bolts, and they must be tightened crosswise. That is, first the right bolt is tightened, then the left, then the top bolt, then the bottom, etc. Only such a tightening pattern can guarantee the tightness of the crankcase cover;
    • damage to the sealing gasket under the crankcase cover. If the above tightening pattern does not lead to anything, it means that the seal under the crankcase cover has worn out. Therefore, the cover will have to be removed and the sealing gasket replaced.

    The steering wheel turns hard

    If the driver feels that it has become very difficult to turn the steering wheel, this can happen for the following reasons:

    • Incorrect alignment of the steering wheels. The solution is obvious: install the car on a stand and set the correct toe and camber angles;
    • one or more parts of the steering system are deformed. Steering rods are usually deformed. And this happens due to external mechanical influences (flying stones, regular driving on uneven roads). Deformed rods will have to be removed and replaced with new ones;
    • the gap between the worm and the roller in the steering gear has increased (or vice versa, decreased). Over time, any mechanical connection can become loose. And worm joints are no exception. To eliminate the problem, the roller gap is adjusted using a special bolt, then the gap size is checked using a feeler gauge. The resulting figure is checked against the figure specified in the operating instructions for the machine;
    • The nut on the swing arm is too tight. The peculiarity of this nut is that over time it does not weaken, like other fasteners, but rather tightens. This occurs due to the specific operating conditions of the pendulum arm. The solution is obvious: the nut should be slightly loosened.

    Adjusting the steering column play

    The need for adjustment occurs after the unit has been restored or when there is a large gap when twisting the steering wheel. If there is a large gap in the mechanism, the wheels remain slightly behind the steering wheel. To adjust you will need:

    • flat screwdriver;
    • Key 19 mm.

    We issue a movement to the center, then we do the following:

      Using a 19mm flat key, unscrew the nut on the top of the steering gear.

    Video: adjusting the steering column play on a “classic”

    How to disassemble the steering wheel yourself

    VAZ 2107 owners rarely disassemble their steering wheels - it is often easier to purchase a new one than to repair the old one. In addition, cheap plastic does not always allow for high-quality repair of the steering wheel.

    The steering wheel removed from the car can be disassembled quite quickly - all you need is a thin flat-head screwdriver:

    1. On the inside of the steering wheel, unscrew the 6 screws that hold the horn button.
    2. Remove the 4 screws diagonally that secure the contact pins.
    3. Unscrew the 2 screws in the center of the steering wheel - they secure the button to the steering wheel through bushings.
    4. Unscrew the 2 central bolts and remove the horn button.
    5. The diagonal bolts can be left on the steering wheel - they are not responsible for anything.

    Standard steering wheel VAZ 2106

    The first generation of the VAZ 2106, which left the factory assembly line in 1976, became a turning point in the development of the entire domestic automotive industry. The model was successful by many standards, but it was not without significant drawbacks.

    So, the steering wheel can be considered a big disadvantage of the “six” (even by the standards of that time). It was made of cheap rubber, and therefore constantly slipped out of the driver’s hands while driving. In addition, the large diameter and very thin rim did not allow the driver to feel comfortable behind the wheel. On later “six” models, the designers eliminated the main drawback of the steering wheel and made it slightly smaller in diameter and thicker for easy grip.

    The thin steering wheel did not provide maximum comfort in driving

    The classic steering wheel for VAZ has a diameter of 350 mm

    Video on installing a Sparco steering wheel on the “four”

    As you can see, removing the steering wheel is not difficult. Even an inexperienced car enthusiast will cope with the task within half an hour, no more. Problems may arise when installing a steering wheel that does not fit the design of the car and the adapter. In such cases, you need to take an individual approach to find the right solution.

    How to remove the steering wheel of a VAZ 2107

    The need to remove the steering wheel may arise for various reasons. It’s worth going into more detail on when and how to do this.

    When to shoot

    The VAZ 2107 steering wheel is a fairly reliable part that does not have to be removed very often. There are practically no parts that can fail. The most common reasons for its dismantling are:

    • Signal button problems. The problem manifests itself in the inability to use the sound signal, which occurs due to a broken contact;
    • appearance. As the car is used, the surface of the steering wheel wears out. To hide signs of wear, car owners use braids, but not everyone likes them. This product additionally increases the diameter of the steering wheel;
    • tuning If the goal is to replace the steering wheel with a more modern and stylish one, then dismantling it cannot be done;
    • repair. Removing the part may also be necessary when carrying out certain types of work on the dashboard, dashboard or horn contacts.

    Removing the steering wheel

    To remove the steering wheel on the “seven” you will need the following tools:

    • knob;
    • head 24;
    • flat screwdriver.

    The procedure is carried out in the following order:

    1. Place the car on a level surface so that the front wheels are level.
    2. Remove the negative terminal from the battery.
    3. We sit in the driver's seat and use a screwdriver to pry up the soft insert located in the center of the steering wheel.
    4. Using a socket with a knob, loosen the nut, but do not unscrew it completely.
    5. We grab the wheel with both hands and pull it towards ourselves. If the steering wheel cannot be pulled off the splines, tap the back side with your palms and knock the product off the shaft.
    6. Unscrew the nut completely and remove the steering wheel.

    Video: how to remove the steering wheel on the “seven”

    To make it easier to install the steering wheel in place, it is recommended to mark the hub and shaft before dismantling

    Replacing the steering wheel cover and slip ring

    Sometimes it is necessary to replace steering wheel parts (slip ring, springs or cover), for example, if they are damaged or malfunctioning. For repairs, you only need a Phillips screwdriver. The process consists of the following step-by-step actions:

    1. Unscrew the screws securing the cover on the back of the steering wheel.
    2. To remove the two middle screws, remove the plugs.
    3. We dismantle the cover and remove the wires coming from the slip ring.
    4. We remove the springs, moving them to a new cover if it is being replaced.
    5. To replace the slip ring, unscrew the fastening screws and remove the part.
    6. We replace the ring or cover and assemble the steering wheel in the reverse order.

    Installing the steering wheel

    Before reinstalling the steering wheel, it is necessary to lubricate the splines, for example, with Litol-24 grease. Assembly is performed in the following order:

    1. We put the steering wheel on the slots, aligning the previously applied marks. If you are installing a new steering wheel, set it as level as possible.
    2. We insert the nut into the head and screw it onto the thread with a wrench.
    3. Holding the steering wheel firmly, tighten the nut.
    4. We replace the battery terminal and try to drive about 50–100 m along a road where there is no other vehicle. This will ensure that the steering wheel is in the correct position. If it is displaced, then unscrew the nut and rearrange the part, moving it 1 tooth in one direction or another.
    5. We put the cover in place.

    If it is necessary to install a sports steering wheel, then the part is first connected to the adapter with bolts, after which it is mounted on the splines in the same way as described above.

    The steering wheel on a VAZ 2107 does not have to be removed very often. However, if such a need arises, dismantling the part is within the capabilities of each owner of this car. Removal requires a minimum set of tools, following step-by-step instructions and a little time.

    Replacing the steering wheel on a VAZ 2104, VAZ 2105, VAZ 2106, VAZ 2107

    Welcome! The steering wheel is one of the most important parts in a car, imagine what it would be like if the car didn’t have a steering wheel?
    Naturally, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to go anywhere with such a car. And that’s not the point, experienced people who have driven different cars know firsthand that if the steering wheel installed in the car is not comfortable, then it is unlikely that you will be able to drive normally in this car. (For example, you can take the VAZ 2101 car; anyone who has driven it with the original steering wheel will understand what’s going on) Note! To replace the steering wheel with a new one, you will need a screwdriver and an extension socket with a “24” socket to unscrew the central nut of the steering wheel!

    Question? Which steering wheel do you like best: Thin, thick, large or narrow in diameter? (Write your answer in the comments)

    Summary:

    What does “correct steering wheel position” mean?

    A car enthusiast should know that there are specifics when installing a steering wheel. Thus, the steering shaft has one double spline, so the new steering wheel can be installed in exactly one position - the correct one.

    To quickly find this “right position”, you need to:

    1. Initially, turn the steering wheel to align the front wheels of the car so that they stand strictly straight.
    2. Place the widest opening between the steering wheel spokes directly in front of the dashboard in the “straight” position.
    3. The “correct position” is also determined by the fact that the entire panel of the car - every lamp and dials - should be clearly visible from the driver’s seat.

    When the front wheels are aligned strictly straight, the large spoke of the steering wheel should be horizontal

    The final point of checking after installing the steering wheel in place is the quality of the signal. If the sound works at any steering wheel position, then the procedure was performed correctly.

    Thus, removing the steering wheel from a VAZ 2106 is not difficult. It is much more important to follow all safety rules and then install a new steering wheel without errors.

    How to remove the steering wheel from the “six”

    Removing the steering wheel in a VAZ 2106 is very simple, but there are some nuances. The entire dismantling procedure will take a few minutes: you need to follow clear rules, otherwise you can make mistakes.

    The method for removing the steering wheel is the same for almost all passenger cars that do not have airbags (the VAZ 2106 is not equipped with them). Some differences in dismantling may be associated only with the fastening parameters of the steering wheel elements, but this is not significant.

    The steering wheel on the VAZ 2106 is fixed to the steering shaft using one large nut. Access to the fixation point can be obtained through a special hole, which is located in the signal button (in the central part of the steering wheel itself).

    As mentioned above, initially the “sixes” were equipped with thin steering wheels, while later models were equipped with thick ones. Today there are practically no old cars left, so let’s look at the process of dismantling a thick steering wheel.

    What tools will you need?

    Even a novice car owner can remove the steering wheel from a VAZ 2106. It is enough to have with you:

    • a screwdriver with a thin flat blade;
    • 24 mm head;
    • head extension.

    Dismantling procedure

    Having prepared the necessary tools and making sure that nothing will distract you from work, you can begin to remove the steering wheel:

    Sit in the driver's seat in the cabin. Use a screwdriver to pry the AvtoVAZ logo badge in the center of the steering wheel and remove it.

    Disconnect the battery, as there is voltage in the steering wheel, and the contacts may short out during operation. Using a 24 mm socket and an extension, loosen the fastening nut through the resulting hole. It makes no sense to completely unscrew the nut, otherwise the steering wheel may suddenly jump out.

    Having loosened the nut, you need to try to remove the steering wheel from the slot, pulling it towards you with both hands. If this does not work, you should forcefully strike the steering wheel several times from the back side.

    It is important that the nut remains on the shaft and does not fly out along with the steering wheel.

    As soon as the steering wheel is freed from the splines securing it and begins to move, the nut can be unscrewed completely and pulled out. After this, the steering wheel itself will freely come out of the groove.

    The new steering wheel is mounted in the reverse order: first, the wheel is put on the shaft splines, and then tightened with a nut.

    The design and principle of operation of the VAZ 2106 steering mechanism

    The design of the VAZ 2106 steering mechanism is very complex. However, it is precisely this that allows the driver to confidently control the car in a variety of situations. All elements of the control system are shown in the figure below.

    The control system of the “six” is very complex and consists of many elements

    Here it should be said about the ease of control of the “six”. To turn the steering wheel, the driver makes a minimum of effort. And therefore, less tired on long trips. The steering of the “six” also has one more feature: play. It is very minor and is not a sign of a problem with the steering system. Play in the “six” steering wheel is a common occurrence; it occurs due to the abundance of various rods and small elements in the control system. Finally, in the latest models of the “sixes” they began to install injury-proof steering columns, which could fold in the event of a strong impact, increasing the driver’s chances of surviving a serious accident. The VAZ 2106 steering mechanism works as follows:

    1. The driver turns the steering wheel in the desired direction.
    2. A worm shaft begins to move in the steering gear, driven by a system of hinges.
    3. The gear mated to the worm shaft also begins to rotate and moves the double-ridge roller.
    4. Under the action of the roller, the secondary shaft of the steering gear begins to rotate.
    5. The bipod is attached to this shaft. When moving, they set the main steering rods in motion. Through these parts, the driver’s force is transmitted to the front wheels, which rotate to the required angle.

    VAZ 2107 steering wheel

    The steering wheel is connected to the steering gearbox through an intermediate shaft. The entire steering design is designed to transfer the rotational force of the steering wheel shaft into a similar rotational force of the bipod shaft. When the steering gear lever turns and the steering linkage is applied, the front wheels rotate.

Steering wheel.17. Upper support tube of the steering shaft. 18. Steering shaft bracket. 19. Left body spar. 20. Turnbuckles for adjusting coupling. 21. Left rotary knuckle

    A car steering wheel is a frame with a hub, rim and spokes. On the VAZ 2107, the steering wheel has 4 spokes, and the rim itself is made of special rubber. The steering wheel size on this car is 400 mm. This diameter is quite large by today's standards, but turning the steering wheel is not difficult. There is a pressure element on the steering wheel that allows you to turn on the sound signal.

    The standard VAZ 2107 steering wheel has 4 spokes and a rim diameter of 400 mm

    Is it possible to install from another car?

    The steering wheel on the VAZ 2107 differs from the steering wheel of the same “penny” or “six” in its more attractive appearance and comfortable grip. If for some reason the standard steering wheel does not suit you, there are options for replacing it with a part from other cars:

    • "Kalina", "Priora", VAZ 2115;
    • products from Chinese manufacturers;
    • steering wheels from the “sport” category of such well-known brands as Sparco, Momo, etc.

    The steering wheel from the Priora in the interior of the Seven looks pretty nice

    It is not recommended to install products from unknown Chinese manufacturers on classic rear-wheel drive Zhiguli cars. This is explained by the fact that such cars are not equipped with a rack, but with a steering gear with a worm mechanism. The absence of hydraulic or electric power steering means that sometimes quite a lot of force must be applied to the steering wheel. When installing a low-quality product, there is a possibility that at some point you will be left with the steering wheel in your hands, which will lead to undesirable consequences.

    Therefore, when choosing a steering wheel, attention should be paid not only to aesthetics, convenience and ergonomics. The steering wheel must also meet safety requirements

    You can be confident in the quality of parts from the Togliatti Automobile Plant and well-known European brands, since all products of these manufacturers are tested.

    Sports

    The sports steering wheel was initially used only in rallies, i.e. for its intended purpose. However, some owners of “Sevens” install such a steering wheel in order to modify their car, to make it different from the standard. Installing a sports steering wheel has the following advantages:

    • space is saved due to the smaller size of the product;
    • the small size of the steering wheel improves the ability to maneuver at higher speeds;
    • attractive appearance.

    A sports steering wheel is installed as a tuning element

    Of the minuses it is worth noting:

    • high probability of buying a low-quality part;
    • automatic turn off of turn signals will not function;
    • the need to purchase a special adapter;
    • there is a possibility of being refused a technical inspection.

    Not everyone likes the classic VAZ steering wheel because of its size. However, it is worth considering that installing a sports steering wheel is not a cheap pleasure.

    Adapter for mounting a sports steering wheel

    Wood

    There are owners of Zhiguli and other “classics” who strive to give the salon a special style and comfort. Therefore, instead of a standard steering wheel, they install a wooden product. This steering wheel is similar in spokes and size to a sports steering wheel, but the rim itself is made of wood. The detail in the interior of the cabin looks quite attractive.

    Installing a wooden steering wheel allows you to give the car interior a special style

    Installation of a sports steering wheel without an adapter on a VAZ 2104-07

    If you are not too concerned about the steering column trim in the cabin, then a tuning product from the Sparco brand, equipped with a quick-release device, can be put in “four” without using an adapter. The essence of the method is to use as the last part the central part of the standard steering wheel with a wide platform and slots, and simply cut off the rest. To work you will need:

    • electric drill with a 6.5 mm drill bit;
    • long M6 bolts – 6 pcs.;
    • hammer and core;
    • grinder with a circle on iron;
    • hex wrench to suit the size of the bolts;
    • caliper, ruler.

    The flange of the quick-release mechanism fits well on the central part of the standard steering wheel

    The first step is to cut out the central part of the standard steering wheel with a grinder and carefully process the edges. Then the order is as follows:

    1. Having taken the dimensions from the quick-release mechanism, where there are 6 holes for fastening, mark the cut part for them. The central holes of both parts must match.
    2. Trim the ends of the cut element so that they do not interfere with the tight fit of the new steering wheel.
    3. Drill holes, having previously marked them with a core.
    4. Bolt the resulting part to the sports steering wheel mechanism.

    Holes are drilled on the old steering wheel for a new flange

    As a result, the splined part of the old steering wheel will serve as a mount for the new one. Then install and configure it as usual.

    Sparco sports steering wheel with the core from the factory steering wheel

    Filling oil into the steering gear

    As mentioned above, the steering gear housing is sealed. Oil is poured inside, which can significantly reduce friction of parts. Any GL5 or GL4 class oil is suitable for a VAZ gearbox. The viscosity class should be SAE80-W90. Many owners of “sixes” fill in the old Soviet TAD17 oil, which also has an acceptable viscosity and is cheaper. To fill the gearbox completely, you will need 0.22 liters of gear oil.

    How to check the oil level in the steering gear

    In order for the steering gear parts to last as long as possible, the driver must periodically monitor the oil level in this device and, if necessary, add lubricant.

    1. The gearbox cover has a hole for filling oil, closed with a plug. The plug is unscrewed using an 8-mm open-end wrench.
    2. A thin long screwdriver or oil dipstick is inserted into the hole until it stops. The oil should reach the bottom edge of the oil drain hole.
    3. If the oil level is normal, the plug is returned to its place, screwed in, and any oil leaks on the cap are wiped off with a rag. If the level is low, add oil.

    Oil filling sequence

    If the driver needs to add a little oil to the gearbox or change the oil completely, he will need an empty plastic bottle, a piece of plastic tube and a medical syringe of the largest volume. It should be noted here that the operating instructions for the machine say: the oil in the steering gear should be changed once a year.

    1. The oil plug on the gearbox cover is unscrewed. A plastic tube is placed over the syringe. The other end of the tube is inserted into the drain hole of the gearbox, the oil is drawn out into a syringe and poured into an empty plastic bottle.
    2. After complete drainage, new oil is poured into the gearbox using the same syringe. Fill until oil begins to drip from the drain hole. After this, the plug is screwed into place, and the gearbox cover is thoroughly wiped with a rag.

    So, the steering gearbox on the “six” is a very important part. Not only the controllability of the car, but also the safety of the driver and passengers depends on its condition. Even a novice car enthusiast can replace the gearbox. No special skills or knowledge are required for this. You just need to know how to use wrenches and strictly follow the recommendations outlined above.

    Purpose of the VAZ 2106 steering gear

    The steering gearbox is an integral part of the “six” control system. And its purpose is to ensure timely rotation of the steering wheels in the direction desired by the driver.

    The steering gearboxes of all “sixes” are made in cast steel housings

    Thanks to the steering gearbox, the effort that the driver spends turning the front wheels is significantly reduced. And finally, the gearbox allows you to reduce the number of steering wheel revolutions several times, which significantly improves the vehicle's handling.

    Steering gear design

    All elements of the steering gear are housed in a sealed steel case, which is produced by casting. The main parts of the gearbox are the gear and the so-called worm. These parts are in constant engagement. The housing also contains a bipod shaft with bushings, several ball bearings and springs. There are also several seals and gaskets that prevent oil from leaking out of the housing. You can learn more about the details of the “six” gearbox by looking at the figure.
