Alternator belt Lada Priora 16 cl with air conditioning

The popular domestic Lada Priora, from the very beginning to this day, has been produced in a variety of configurations, and this, among other things, also depends on what type of drive the so-called auxiliary units are installed on. As an example, we can recall a car with an electric steering system with a conventional alternator belt tensioning mechanism, and in order to change it, it takes no more than 10 minutes, because the design is exactly the same as in the 10th generation versions of the Lada.

If you take a car with a configuration that includes power steering and air conditioning, then the trajectory of the belt will be different, even replacing the alternator belt will be different from the usual one. Below we will look at what the differences are.

Priora alternator belt size

To choose a Priora alternator belt, you need to check whether the car has air conditioning and what brand it is. You can find the difference between the Halla and Panasonic systems by the following points:

  • The extreme right regulator (responsible for air speed) on Panasonic has more than 15 positions, while Hull has only 4.
  • When you press the middle Panasonic button, the air conditioning and windshield defogger mode are turned on. On Hull this button does not function (a plug is installed).

There are also differences under the hood: with the Panasonic system the hose is rubber, with the Hull it is aluminum.
The Priora generator belt with air conditioning without power steering for the Halla system and the Panasonic system is marked 6РК1115.

Without air conditioning, there are two options:

  • without power steering, a 742 mm drive is installed;
  • The alternator belt on a Lada Priora with power steering without air conditioning is set to 1115 mm.

In what cases does a car need to be replaced?

In what cases is it necessary to check and change the belt on a Lada Priora 8 or 16 valves, which belt is better to use, how to tighten the tensioner correctly?

First, let's look at the main signs of wear:

  1. First of all, the check is carried out if the strap begins to whistle. The whistle usually appears when starting the engine, increasing the speed, or activating electrical equipment. Sometimes fixing the problem involves tightening the strap by tightening the tension roller. If the tension is normal, there is a possibility that one of the drives, for example, a compressor or generator unit, is jammed. Also, the whistling may be due to wear of the bearing elements of the Conder clutch; all worn bearings must be replaced.
  2. With the motor turned off, you should carefully inspect the device. If it is clear that the strap has lost its elasticity or has become damaged in the form of cracks, delamination or tears, this indicates that it will soon have to be replaced.
  3. Looseness may also be due to wear on the tension roller.
  4. The car begins to shake when the electrical equipment is activated. This problem happens very rarely and usually in such cases car owners have no idea what to do. Reduced traction and shaking can be caused by high loads on the car's electrical network.
  5. The low battery indicator began to light up on the dashboard, and you are sure that the battery itself is functioning normally and is fully charged. But keep in mind that this problem may also be associated with wear of the component parts of the generator set, for example, brushes or rotor (video author - Vladimir Z).

Belt life

Drive manufacturers claim that the alternator belt for the Lada Priora is 16 cl. without air conditioning it can last 120 thousand km. This is acceptable if all systems work flawlessly and no external factors affect this part of the car. But in reality this is not the case; the operation of the belt is affected by many things, including temperature changes.

Recommendations from experts and Prior owners boil down to the fact that it is better to change the drive every 50-70 thousand km, provided that high-quality spare parts are used.

Principle of operation

When you turn the ignition on, current from the battery enters the field winding through the brush assembly, where a magnetic field appears. When the crankshaft rotates, the rotor goes into rotation. The magnetic field passes through the stator winding and an alternating voltage is generated at the output. Having reached a certain rotation speed, the excitation winding begins to be powered directly from the generator.

Basic faults

Why does the generator not charge the Lada Priora car? There may be several reasons:

  • the diode bridge is damaged;
  • the turns of the stator winding are closed;
  • slip rings wear out;
  • the pulley is damaged or worn out;
  • the wires of the charging circuit are damaged;
  • the bearing is destroyed or worn out;
  • the voltage regulator is damaged;
  • The current collecting brushes wear out.

In all of the above cases, repair of the Lada Priora generator will be required.

Alternator belt problems

There are several main signs that it is time to change the alternator belt on the Priora 2172. And if some of them are harbingers of small costs, then some can lead to costly repairs.

Why does the alternator belt whistle?

One of the obvious causes of whistling is water entering the drive. The rubber becomes wet and may make a long-drawn sound when moving for a few seconds. From a heated engine, the moisture quickly dries out, and the squealing should disappear. If the sound appears on a dry, hot day, it means that the drive itself has stretched and should be replaced or the tensioner rollers tightened.

Also, squeaking can occur in winter, during cold times, when the rubber becomes hard and adheres less tightly to the working surfaces. The same heat from the engine makes it more elastic, and it takes its original shape, pressing against the generator pulleys.

Another reason for the formation of a whistle is the simultaneous inclusion of all electrical appliances in conjunction with the air conditioner. If the drive has been in use on the car for some time and has even minor defects, then such a load will be accompanied by an audible sound.

Why does the Priora alternator belt slip?

In addition to water, due to which the drive temporarily loses tight contact with the rollers, its slippage is also affected by the belt mileage. If the new spare part is pressed very tightly against all the rollers, then over time the rubber stretches and may slide when the engine starts. A similar effect is formed due to cracks that appear on the surface of the drive during operation.

Why does the alternator belt “eat”?

A problem that does not occur often, but causes confusion among many car owners - the drive begins to become shaggy on one side. This is due to the destruction of the pulleys, which for various reasons stop working stably. Increased scrolling resistance under load causes the belt to move slightly from side to side, touching other surfaces.

Why does the alternator belt fall off?

If in one case the drive can be “eaten up”, then in another case it can fly off. This happens due to clogging of the working surfaces of the drive and pulleys. Dirt gets clogged, compacted tightly and creates an uneven surface, causing the belt to slip and move out.

A weakened belt tension can also affect belt failure. This happens either due to wear and tear of all elements involved in the drive (their service life is coming to an end), or due to the installation of low-quality components.

Generator malfunctions and ways to eliminate them

There aren't many problems. They come in two main varieties.

Type of faults

Signs

The generator and battery always work together. For the battery, the generator is the only autonomous power source, which allows it to remain as a backup power source for the on-board network when the generator is not working. In turn, by constantly recharging the battery, the generator makes it possible to start the engine at any time.

Generator malfunctions do not occur out of nowhere; there are usually preconditions for breakdowns. And the owner has the opportunity to correct the malfunction in a timely manner. Otherwise, the generator will need to be repaired on Priora.

Difficulty starting the engine

Problems with starting the propulsion system directly indicate problems with the generator. If it malfunctions, the battery experiences a constant lack of charge, which means it does not have enough power to rotate the engine flywheel through the starter. A discharged battery is the main result of a generator breakdown. A malfunction of this device can result not only from a lack of charge, but also, conversely, from overcharging. Such phenomena arise due to the failure of the relay regulator, i.e., current is generated in much larger volumes. This leads to boiling of the electrolyte in the battery banks and, as a consequence, to failure of the battery.

When to change the alternator belt

Whether the Priora alternator belt needs to be replaced with or without air conditioning can be determined by several signs:

  • The permissible mileage has reached 70 thousand km (it is advisable to visually inspect the drive every 15 thousand km).
  • When examining the inner working surface of the belt, there are cracks, abrasions, and tears.
  • After adjusting the roller, the belt tension remains insufficient.

It's also time to change the belt if you feel vibration in the drive.

Snapshot1111

We tighten the belt until the cutout of the outer race coincides with the rectangular protrusion of its inner sleeve and tighten the roller mounting bolt to a torque of 34–41 Nm. Excessive belt tension reduces the service life of both the belt itself and the bearings of the coolant pump, tensioner and guide rollers. Insufficient belt tension leads to its premature failure and can cause irregular valve timing and, as a result, lead to contact of the pistons with the valves and expensive engine repairs.

We turn the crankshaft two turns until the marks on the camshaft sprockets align with the cutouts on the rear timing cover and check that the rectangular protrusion of the inner bushing of the tension roller coincides with the cutout of its outer race. If necessary, repeat adjusting the belt tension. If belt defects are detected or if there is a significant discrepancy between the position of the protrusion of the inner bushing of the tension roller and the cutout of its outer race (by more than half the width of the protrusion), the belt should be replaced. You should also change the belt if traces of engine oil are found on it (before installing a new belt, you need to eliminate the cause of oil getting on the belt), when replacing one of the rollers or the coolant pump.

The belt check was shown on a vehicle with air conditioning. If there is no air conditioning on the car, then the alternator drive belt should be removed, as shown in the article “Checking and replacing the Lada Priora alternator belt”.

What to do if the alternator belt breaks

Anything can happen on the road, and we cannot exclude those moments when, for some reason, the generator drive breaks. If this happens, you can carry out a simple procedure to replace it with improvised means and go to a service station or auto store to purchase an original spare part.

A strong rope or women's tights folded into a narrow strip are suitable as a substitute for the drive.

  • We lower the tensioner to the limit to facilitate installation of the temporary drive.
  • We put a rope on all the rollers.
  • We return the tensioner to its original position, checking the deflection of the rope (it should not be more than one centimeter).

On cars without power steering or air conditioning, the replacement method is slightly different:

  • Loosen the top nut of the generator.
  • We tighten the tension bolt to bring the generator closer to the engine.
  • We install the rope.
  • We unscrew the tension bolt, moving the electric generator away from the engine.
  • Having achieved the required tension, tighten the upper fixing nut.

If this happens within the city, and the car has a good battery, you can immediately go to a repair shop or store. The battery charge lasts for 20-40 km, but to be sure of covering such a distance, you should turn off all electrical appliances.

Tension with adjuster bar

Securing the generator using a strip

This method is used for older cars (for example, “classic” VAZs). It is based on the fact that the generator is attached to the engine using a special arc-shaped strip, as well as a bolt and nut. By loosening the fastening, you can move the bar with the generator relative to the engine to the required distance, thereby adjusting the tension level.

Actions are performed according to the following algorithm:

  • unscrew the fastening nut on the arc-shaped bar;
  • Using a pry bar, we adjust the position (move) of the generator relative to the engine;
  • tighten the nut, fixing the new position of the generator.

The procedure is simple, it can be repeated if you were unable to achieve the required level of tension the first time.

How to lubricate the alternator belt tensioner roller

Lubrication of the roller is necessary so that the bearing moves more easily and does not create additional resistance to the movement of the drive. This can be done without removing the roller itself. Initially, select a lubricant:

  • lithium lubricants (most often used “Litol-24” or “Ciatim-221”);
  • CV joint-4 is best manifested in medium and high temperature conditions;
  • synthetic lubricants are not washed out by water, therefore they are recommended for regions with high humidity.

Having chosen the product, you can begin to lubricate the roller:

  1. Using a flathead screwdriver, carefully remove the boot from the tensioner.
  2. Fill the syringe with no more than 1 cubic meter of lubricant.
  3. Insert the needle into the gap from the boot and move it around the entire circle, smoothly squeezing out the contents of the syringe.
  4. Start the engine so that the lubricant is evenly distributed on the roller.

After this, turn off the engine and replace the boot. Excess lubricant should be carefully removed with a cloth or sponge so that it does not get on the belt during operation.

How to tighten the alternator belt on a Priora

If the drive, after inspection, is in good condition and does not require replacement, but the driver is bothered by noise from the generator (short-term squealing), try changing the belt tension.

If the Priora is 8-valve without additional equipment, then tensioning is carried out by an adjusting bolt located on the generator. Turning clockwise will increase the drive tension.

When it is necessary to tighten the alternator belt on a 16-valve Priora with air conditioning, adjustment is carried out using a belt tensioner. This video has two holes for a special key (if you don’t have one on hand, you can make a bracket to size from any bendable metal). It is necessary to insert the key and slowly turn it either toward you or away from you, depending on whether you want to tighten or loosen the drive.

Important feature of Lada Priora

When planning to solve an issue related to a belt or alternator with your own hands, it is important to consider one point. This is the equipment of the car.

The thing is that Lada Priora can be without power steering and air conditioning. And the procedure for carrying out repair work largely depends on this.

So the replacement instructions need to be considered taking into account whether the Priora has air conditioning or power steering or not.

Alternator Belt Adjustment

How to tighten the alternator belt on a Priora 2170 is described just above; you need to check that its tension is correct:

  • It is necessary to create pressure on the drive between the camshaft discs (you can press hard with your finger) and see how much the belt bends. The permissible deflection is 5-6 mm. If the drive does not flex, you should loosen the tension; if you push it with your finger more than one cm, you need to increase the tension.
  • There are special marks on the roller that you can use to guide you when adjusting the tension. This applies only to a correctly selected new belt and at the time of its initial installation.

If the adjustment is incorrect, the following points appear:

  • Weak belt tension creates a voltage dip (the battery icon on the dashboard lights up, the headlights shine dimly).
  • If the drive is overtightened, the generator bearing will be under too much load and will operate with a loud hum, and will also quickly fail.

Replacement instructions with power steering

Since the power steering pulley in this modification is at a low height, the creators ran the generator belt around the engine mount. This makes it a little more difficult to do the DIY change.

Tools

  • tension key;
  • a set of keys;
  • jack;
  • set of heads;
  • WD40 liquid.

Stages

  1. Use WD40 to moisten the bolts that secure the motor mount and bracket.

    These bolts need to be moistened with liquid

  2. After about a quarter of an hour, you can begin to unscrew the bracket nut.
  3. Let's jack up the wheel.
  4. Next, we place some object under the motor and remove the wheel.
  5. We lower the car a little.
  6. Unscrew the tension roller.
  7. Bend the belt.
  8. Now you can unscrew the bolts that secure the pillow.

    These bolts need to be unscrewed

  9. Next, we lower the car so that the engine begins to hang out.
  10. The cushion moves towards the motor.

    Moving the pillow

  11. Now you can change.
  12. Next, we lift the car with a jack so that the power unit lowers. We do this carefully so that the belt and pillow do not move.
  13. Tighten the bolts and nuts.
  14. We put on the wheel and lower the car.

At this point, work on the model with power steering can be considered completed.
