This category covers all other situations where keys are used to steal a vehicle. For example, thieves may obtain the VIN and register the specific vehicle they want to steal and contact an unscrupulous dealer for duplicate keys.
- Taking a car without the owner's consent (7%)
This is when a driver you know (friend, family member, work colleague) uses a car without the owner's permission. A classic example is a teenager breaking into his parents' car, getting into an accident, and then trying to hide his unpleasant actions by reporting the theft.
- Keys stolen during a robbery (5%)
It is quite unpleasant when a criminal confronts you and threatens you, and in a rude manner demands your car keys. This can happen while you are in the car (hijacking), just getting in or out of the car. In this situation there is no need to resist. After all, life is more valuable. You just need to hand over the keys to the robber and thereby save your life.
This usually happens in a situation where the “buyer” transfers funds to the seller and drives away in the purchased car. In advance, the dishonest seller makes a duplicate of the keys, and when the buyer leaves with the purchased car, the seller tracks the new location of the car he sold.
- Car theft by towing, tow truck (2%)
Thieves can use a tow truck to steal cars. A parked vehicle can be broken into (to remove the parking brake) and physically moved to a pre-prepared, visible location (often an underground garage) and then sold for parts.
There are several things you can do to reduce the risk of your car being stolen. When leaving the car, close the windows, lock the car and take the keys with you. Don't leave valuables in plain sight in your car unattended - it's an open invitation to thieves. There is no need to use magnetic holders for spare keys, which are usually installed on the bottom of the car. Thieves have full knowledge of these “secret” hiding places.
If possible, park your car in well-lit areas. Turn your wheels toward the side of the road to make it harder for a thief to tow your vehicle. If you are parked in your own garage, lock the car, close the windows and lock the garage. Make sure your garage windows are protected too. If your car has an alarm or other anti-theft device, be sure to use it even at home. You can use additional anti-theft devices for more reliable protection.
If circumstances require you to leave your vehicle unattended for an extended period of time, consider immobilizing the vehicle—forcibly. You can temporarily remove the distributor rotor, pull out some ignition fuse or other important part.
Don't think that because you drive an old car that you are somehow protected from theft. In fact, older cars are often easier to steal. These cars are not equipped with immobilizers. However, such cars can be sold profitably - in parts. When it comes to car spare parts, it wouldn’t hurt to engrave a personal identification number or VIN on the car’s parts and accessories. You can even engrave your VIN on windows.
The theft, as a rule, is planned in advance, and even before the theft is committed, the criminal has prepared a place for selling someone else's car. For criminals, the most attractive cars are those that are in great demand and popularity among the population. This is due to the fact that such vehicles can be sold most profitably.
Based on 2022 data, a rating of the theft rate of private cars within Moscow and the Moscow region was compiled. This list takes into account many factors, ranging from the region to the specifics of a particular car.
The ranking of the most stolen cars shows not only the weakness of security systems and the popularity of a particular model among car thieves, but also which car owners are least concerned about safety.
When choosing between an expensive car or a cheap but easily accessible car, the criminal will most likely choose the second option. After all, having discovered the presence of an anti-theft system, most will abandon the hacking attempt, switching their attention to a simpler target.
There is a strong connection between a specific region and the frequency of thefts, determined by several factors. Most of all it depends on the size of the population living in the region. The more people there are in an area, the more frequently carjackings occur there. So, in a city with a population of 1 million people, the loss of a premium car, such as a Bentley or Rolls-Royce, will not be as noticeable as if it happened in a small town where thefts of budget models are more common.
There is no single source for collecting and analyzing statistics on theft. The rating is a complex of data collected from three main places:
- Traffic police statistics are considered the most reliable source, since most victims at the hands of criminals first turn to law enforcement agencies.
- Companies providing security installation services require this information to improve their products. In particular, they focus on vehicles equipped with anti-theft systems, and more specifically, the number of stolen vehicles relative to failed thefts. These data clearly show the effectiveness of certain security systems.
Which cars are least popular among car thieves around the world?
According to statistics, since 2006, the number of stolen cars has decreased by 13% annually. We've compiled a list of the models that are least likely to be stolen, so you can relax if you own one of these cars.
1 . INFINITI EX35
Next on the list is the Infiniti EX35. This model is equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 297 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, and for the 2011 model year the car is equipped with a seven-speed automatic transmission. The Infiniti EX35 was the first production car to offer Around View Monitor (AVD), an in-vehicle option that uses small cameras mounted on the front, side and rear to allow the driver to see the vehicle from above while parking.
2.MAZDA MIATA
Coming in at number nine on the list of least stolen cars is the popular Mazda MX-5 Miata, a lightweight two-seat roadster with rear-wheel drive and front engine. The 2011 Miata is part of the third-generation model lineup launched in 2006. Miata enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the debut of the next production model, which is currently being developed with Alfa Romeo. How this model earned such disfavor among car thieves is anyone's guess.
3. TOYOTA PRIUS
Another hybrid on our list. The likelihood that a Toyota Prius will attract the attention of burglars is very low, at least that's what the statistics say. The Prius, the first mass-produced hybrid car, has become the most popular hybrid car on the road and has recently sold more than three million units worldwide. But we are not talking about successful sales of the model, but about the lack of trust in hybrid cars on the part of car thieves. Read the reasons above.
SUBARU FORESTER
The Subaru Forester takes sixth place in our ranking of the most unstoppable cars this year, with a rate of 0.1 thefts per 1,000 units produced in 2011. The fourth generation 2011 Forester marks the model's transition from a traditional minivan to an SUV. Yes, the Forester has evolved over the years and, essentially, we now have a mid-size crossover.
5 . LEXUS CT
Opening with our “top” car, the Lexus CT, is an entry-level hybrid. The CT 200h is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 98 horsepower and 105 Nm of torque, paired with a 134-horsepower electric motor with 153 Nm of torque. According to the latest data available today (2012), there were only 0.2 thefts per 1,000 units produced. 6. VOLVO XC60
It probably won’t be news to anyone that Volvo cars are considered the safest, but now the company can confidently say that their cars are the least likely to be stolen. The 2010 XC60 from the Swedish automaker opens our top five. Most recently, Volvo gave the 2014 XC60 a minor update that tweaked the crossover's design a bit but kept the same 240-horsepower, 3.2-liter V-6 under the hood. The sportier T6 model is available with a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that produces 325 horsepower.
HYUNDAI VERACRUZE
Hyundai Veracruz ranks fourth in the ranking of the most anti-theft cars in the world and is the only Korean-made car in the top ten. Production of the crossover ceased in 2011; Hyundai replaced it with the new Santa Fe model, which can now comfortably accommodate seven passengers. Reason for car theft in Moscow
The most in demand are spare parts for rare car brands, as well as original spare parts. Many car owners do not skimp on original car parts. First of all, we are talking about models that are no longer in production.
In addition, stolen cars are sold for scrap. This means that scammers have another source of income. Cars that are no longer usable or simply abandoned by their owners are at greatest risk. Such cars are generally located far from parking lots. Cars can be easily accepted at special points not only to receive ferrous metal, but also non-ferrous metals. Cars are disassembled into small parts, so that they simply cannot be recognized.
In order to receive a ransom for returning a stolen car to its owner, third parties may act illegally. Owners realize that redemption will cost 30-50% of the price of the car. Otherwise, the car will be sold for scrap. There are also cases when car owners themselves stage a theft, and this is done to obtain insurance. In this situation, spare parts are sold. To implement such a plan, outsiders are involved, but this does not prevent the owners from successfully implementing such a scheme.
