This article is about the third method. In 2022, the time has come to repair the body of my VAZ 2112 car. Finance sang romances about the new car and I decided to look on the Internet to see what modern equipment exists for repairs and how much it will cost me.

Basic list and price of necessary equipment for car body repairs

  • A carbon dioxide cylinder, preferably 40 liters. (in my case it took two full refills) (from 4 to 7 t.r.)
  • A grinding machine, the criterion for speed is not critical since it is needed at low speeds, but for a power of at least 1000 W, I recommend, of course, a pneumatic machine, these machines are more wear-resistant and do not require time to cool down after long-term operation. (from 800 to 2000 rubles)
  • A drill, preferably from 0 - 2000 rpm, with a power of 500-800 W is enough with adjustable speed. (from 800 to 2000 rubles)
  • Two spray guns, one for priming and the other for paint and varnish chemicals (from 600 to 1000 rubles)
  • Clamps or clamping pliers with gap adjustment, preferably 6 pieces, are needed to fix the thresholds.
  • Grinder for 115-125 mm wheels
  • Grinding machine for discs 115-125 mm
  • Chisel, or a powerful flat-head impact screwdriver.

Repair consumables

  • Sandpaper with grit from 180 to 5000, for different stages of work.
  • 2. Drills with a diameter of 4 to 6 mm, mainly needed for drilling out old thresholds.
  • 3. A sheet of metal 1 - 1.5 mm, you can use metal from old household appliances, often someone throws something away from friends (refrigerator, washing machine, etc.) or dissolve a metal 200 liter barrel, there are many options, if only you could use your imagination, metal necessary for bottom patches.
  • 4. Welding wire, it took me 7 kg for two thresholds and patching the bottom
  • 5. Putty for metal, anti-corrosion and paint and varnish materials, the market is very diverse, if anyone is interested in which ones I used, I will answer in the comments.
  • 6. Paper tape, film for covering parts not subject to painting.
  • 7. Cutting and grinding discs for grinders

Well, I can’t help but remind you about the purchase of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), namely the organs of vision and breathing in the first place, since during this work harmful substances are released and used.

Don’t forget, take care of your health, which you can’t buy with any money.

In this list of equipment, I didn’t include sandblasting because I worked without it, but ideally it definitely wouldn’t hurt, since with such work it’s not often, but still there are places where you can’t get anywhere except with the help of sandblasting, I’m in such places I just used a “zincar” sprayer, which supposedly removes rust and immediately galvanizes, although I’m not a fan of such chemicals, but where could I go?

A car threshold, as everyone knows, consists of 3 parts, internal, external and a threshold amplifier, but when replacing thresholds, few people pay attention to such a detail as the rear heel of the threshold and believe me, it rots at the same time as the threshold, and if you decide to take on such work then I advise you to purchase this part, I also forgot about it, and so as not to order and not wait for another order, since I live in a city where there are no body parts stores and the nearest one where it is possible to purchase is 170 miles away, and I decided to bend this part and bring it out myself, below at In the photo you can see this process, although the cost of the part is quite low; for a VAZ 2112 in 2018 it cost about 400 rubles apiece.

If desired, you can bend and restore almost any part and smooth out all minor defects with a primer, but this process significantly increases the repair time.

Where to start body repair

First you need to prepare the car for work; for the convenience of replacing the thresholds and patching the bottom, I advise you to do the following:

  • Remove all doors
  • Remove the seats
  • Remove air ducts
  • remove the floor covering, the lower part of the covering is also sound insulation and thermal insulation, it is often damp, I advise you to throw it away as rust oxides remain on it, instead buy a new one, I used an old clean carpet.

  • Collect all the bundles and move them away or, if possible, tie them, that is, protect them from damage during work.
  • It is necessary to drain the fluid from the engine when you turn the car over on its side to repair the underbody, unless of course you need it.
  • Disconnect and remove the battery
  • Disconnect the fuel (supply and return) pipes.
  • Drain the fuel tank for safety reasons during operation.
  • Remove the bumper

After the above work, it was time to more carefully assess the damage to the bottom, removing all the insulation, we got to the metal.

After the car is ready for work, you will of course ask where to start, I advise you to start with the thresholds, one by one, after finishing one side completely, move to the other.

I don’t recommend cutting or drilling out two thresholds at once since this is a stiffening rib, I don’t think it’s worth explaining the possible consequences.

But this is if you decide to change both the internal and external thresholds completely, as I did, often many who replace thresholds do not touch the entire internal threshold, but partially repair the threshold itself, cutting out the corroded (rotten) part of the threshold and take the cut out places donor from a new threshold.

Useful tips when replacing a threshold

  • It is easier to bend a metal part according to a layout cut out from cardboard; if the part is complex, bend the sample along the worn part before removing it; if you still have no idea how to bend a complex part according to the layout, then divide the part into several simple fragments for further welding, as shown in see me above using the example of the heel of the threshold in the picture in the article above.
  • Choose a new threshold with a thickness of at least 0.8 mm, this is the manufacturer’s thickness, or I advise you to set it up to 1.2 mm, thresholds with a thickness of 0.6 mm are often found, this is below the manufacturer’s standard
  • As you work, do not forget to treat areas with an anti-corrosion agent that will later be impossible to reach.
  • In place of the factory threshold amplifier, I advise you to cut and install your amplifiers with 3 - 4 mm of metal without making any stiffening ribs, installing them at three points of the threshold, the first under the front pillar, 5 cm away from it, the second under the rear arch pillar, and the third under central pillar, installing all three amplifiers across the entire width of the threshold, 14 cm long, and this is quite enough.
  • If you want to give your car a second life for another 8-10 years, then if possible, remove completely rusty metal and completely re-cook the rotten parts.

  • If you decide to change the entire bottom rather than patch it, then you will also need to remove the torpedo, but from practice I can say there is no need for this, unless, of course, your bottom has completely turned into dust.
  • Do not treat with cheap anti-corrosion agents, for example old-style ones; nowadays the market is diverse and there are more modern and high-quality treatment agents.
  • It is advisable to weld the threshold from the central pillar, gradually leveling and pulling it out using clamps.
  • The distance between welding points is 5 cm.
  • After finishing the work, don’t forget to fill the thresholds with oil anticorrosive, you can pour the oil from the engine, many people think that the oil is ineffective, I can assure you that this is not the case, the only problem is that the oil must be poured every 2-3 years since its protection period less factory equipment.
