Trouble P0523 - Engine Oil Pressure Sensor - Voltage High

How serious is P0523?

The P0523 code is very serious because it can indicate not only a problem with the engine oil pressure sensor, but also a problem with the vehicle's oil system. The car owner may be using the wrong type of oil, or the car's oil level may be too low, for example due to a leak. To avoid serious engine damage, if a P0523 code is detected, it is recommended that you have the fault diagnosed and repaired by a qualified technician as soon as possible.

What repairs can fix the P0523 code?

If, after clearing the code from the PCM and test driving the vehicle, the oil pressure warning light comes back on, have a mechanic check the engine oil pressure sensor wires and connectors. If necessary, the mechanic will repair or replace any damaged components and recheck the system. If the problem persists, the mechanic will check the engine and oil passages. He will also check for leaks. If the engine is seriously damaged, it may need to be replaced.

Diagnosis and problem solving

Make sure the oil level is at the correct level, that it is not diluted with fuel or coolant, or has a thick, tarry consistency. If necessary, add or change the oil before proceeding with further diagnostics.

Perform a thorough visual inspection of the wiring to look for damaged, burnt, disconnected, shorted or corroded wires and connectors. If necessary, repair, clear the P0523 code and rescan the system to see if the code returns.

Checking wiring with a multimeter

Once no visible damage is found, check resistance, ground, and reference voltage. Compare all readings obtained with the data specified in the manual. Replace wiring as necessary to ensure all readings are within manufacturer specifications.

Be sure to disconnect the oil pressure switch from the PCM while checking resistance and continuity to prevent damage to the controller. You should also check the oil pressure switch as it is part of the control circuit.

Checking oil pressure

It is necessary to ensure that the oil pressure is within the range specified by the manufacturer, this can be done by attaching a pressure gauge to the engine. Using a scanner is not recommended because the scanner uses the same information as the PCM.

The PCM and scan tool may indicate an oil pressure condition that is based on incorrect data.

The pressure gauge may take a few seconds to register a reading, but should stabilize after about ten seconds. Record the reading and compare it with the value stated in the manual.

Allow the engine to warm up while watching the pressure gauge. As it warms up, there may be a slight drop in pressure indicated by the pressure gauge. But the oil pressure should not drop below the minimum specified value when the engine is at operating temperature.

Oil pressure readings that are not within acceptable lower limits indicate excessive wear or other mechanical problems within the engine. In this case, simply replacing the oil pressure switch will not solve the problem of error code P0523.

Additional comments for troubleshooting P0523

If the Check Engine light comes on and you notice that the oil pressure is too high, this could indicate a serious problem. We should not forget that the problem may not only be a malfunction of the engine oil pressure sensor (which is often found in older cars with mileage of more than 130,000 km), but also engine damage. If error P0523 appears, it is recommended that you contact a qualified technician as soon as possible to diagnose and resolve the error in order to avoid complete engine failure.

Reviews

Positive
1.Vladimir: Six months have passed since we bought the car, and there have been no breakdowns in such a short time. The fan refused to start several times, the reason turned out to be a bad fuse contact.
2.Vasily: I have been actively using the machine for two years, there are no particular complaints, all units are working as normal. Breakdowns happen, like everyone else, but they are minor and can be easily fixed on your own.
3.Gennady: after two months of the machine being idle, the stove heater began to supply little air. I disassembled it myself, cleaned it, works properly. My recommendations to car enthusiasts: don’t be afraid to repair them yourself.
4.Kirill: I think that Granta is put together with high quality, the price is affordable for a family with an average income. Provided timely maintenance, no problems arise.
5.Ivan: after buying the car, I immediately drained the factory antifreeze and bought good imported antifreeze. Now I don’t know any grief, the stove works like a charm.
6.Dmitry: there were minor defects, I fixed them myself, but they were insignificant and did not affect the performance of the machine.
7.Igor: I’m happy with the car, there are no major comments, as for domestic transport it’s very good.
Negative
1.Victor: Over the two years of active use of the car, I contacted the service station several times under warranty. The fan malfunctioned, then the stove heater. Decided to renovate and sell. Renault Logan is several times better than its domestic counterpart.
2.Vladlen: I’m dissatisfied with Grant’s purchase, I’ve already regretted wasting money several times. The car is not worth the investment.
3.Gennady: a year and a half since purchasing the car, constant investments, purchase of consumables, repairs at service stations.

Conclusion The stove heating system of the Lada Granta is completely copied from the Lada Kalina. There are no complaints about the equipment, everything works properly. In order for the mechanism to serve for a long time, it is necessary to systematically carry out inspection and prevention.

Many motorists save on maintenance, as a result of which the service life is reduced. An important factor is the cloudiness of the antifreeze. The manufacturer recommends replacing it every 75,000 km. Exceeding the interval causes deposits to form at the bottom of the radiator and corrosion begins.

The heating system in the cabin of the budget Lada Kalina model can significantly increase comfort for the driver and his passengers. It ensures that the required temperature conditions are maintained inside the car. Along with such useful options as:

  • "ABS";
  • airbag;
  • electric power steering;
  • electric front windows;
  • front seat heating function,

The design of the interior heater allows the manufacturer to achieve a fairly acceptable level of equipment, which is very worthy for a small-class Lada Kalina model and makes it competitive among its rivals in this segment.

Replacing the emergency oil pressure sensor with your own hands

Preparation of the workplace, necessary tools:

  • Key, head on “19”;
  • Rags;
  • Additional lighting (optional);
  • New pressure controller.

Regulations:

  • We place the car on a flat area;
  • We turn off the engine;
  • Open the hood;
  • We wait until the power unit cools down so as not to damage the skin of the hands;
  • Remove the block with wires from the DBP;
  • Using the key “19” we unscrew the controller from its regular place;
  • We carry out troubleshooting of the seat;
  • We screw in the new controller;
  • We put on the block with wires;
  • We start the engine and check the serviceability of the sensor.

Where is DBP located?

Lada Vesta, as well as X-Ray, is equipped with two modifications of gasoline engines:

Both versions have the same oil pump pre-installed. Obviously, in engines with a large volume, the pump wears out faster, since according to its technical characteristics it is not designed for heavy loads. Engine oil volume is 1.6 liters. 3.4 liters, in the version with a 16-valve mechanism - 4.5 liters. The standard location of the DBP is on the left in the direction of travel of the car, behind the oil filler neck.

Diagnosis of error P0523 and related malfunctions at an authorized dealer: Diagnostic equipment is connected to the vehicle, the vehicle ignition is turned on (the engine does not start). The first step is to determine whether the error is caused by a single failure or is permanent; to do this, the vehicle errors are erased, after which the engine is started.

If error P0523 is entered again, then the vehicle ignition is turned off from the oil pressure sensor, the wiring block is disconnected, after which the vehicle ignition is turned on again and the circuit is checked for a short to ground. Such a test is carried out as follows: first of all, the blocks on both sides of the electrical circuit are disconnected, a special probe is connected at one end to the positive terminal of the battery, after which it is connected to the terminal of the unit being tested; if the probe diode lights up, then the circuit has passed the short circuit test. If there is no short to ground, the oil pressure sensor is faulty. In cases where the circuit passes the short-to-ground test, the diagnostician moves on to the next step.

The vehicle ignition is turned off again, and the harness block X1.2 is disconnected from the controller. After that, the continuity of the circuit is checked between the contact “X1.2/K4” of the block to the controller and the contact of the block to the oil pressure sensor. If the circuit is in good condition, the faulty controller is to blame for the error; in cases where the circuit is faulty, the wiring harness is ordered to be replaced.
