Lada Granta, Lada Priora and Lada Kalina 2nd generation cars are equipped with the same type of gearbox. If we are talking about “mechanics” (manual transmission 2180 and 2181). An automated transmission (AMT or “robot”) is also built on this basis. Let's look at the process of changing gearbox oil in detail.

What is the volume of oil in the Priora gearbox and why is it important?

Excess oil in the Priora box (16 valves), as well as in any other transmission, leads to the fact that the excess lubricant begins to press on the oil seals and begins to leak through them. Moreover, after the problem appears, the leak does not disappear even after the level is normalized, so the overflow is followed by a drop in the level with all the ensuing consequences. In this regard, during filling, it is necessary to know exactly how much oil is in the Priora gearbox right now.

The oil in the gearbox lubricates the rubbing parts, reducing their wear rate, and also protects the mechanism from overheating by transferring excess thermal energy from the gears to the aluminum body of the unit, which also serves as a radiator. Therefore, every owner of this car should know how much oil is in the Priora gearbox in order to avoid underfilling or overfilling of lubricant.

What will happen if you don’t change it in time?

If the car owner does not change the lubricant in a timely manner, faster wear of the internal parts of the unit occurs. When an oil loses its characteristics, it becomes the reason why it cannot perform its duties.

This is fraught with the following consequences:

  1. The friction components of the transmission operate under high loads, which leads to their rapid wear and failure. Bearings are the first to break because these parts work under heavy load.
  2. When worn, metal dust flakes off the bearings, which can clog the lubrication system lines. Because of this, the pressure in it increases greatly, which leads to the squeezing out of oil seals and seals. This ultimately causes a leak.
  3. As a result of wear of the bearings, sounds uncharacteristic of the operation of the unit will appear. The driver may also feel vibrations from the gear lever.
  4. Due to problems associated with the operation of the unit, difficulties arise when changing gears. Sometimes the gearshift lever is knocked out of its set position. When changing gears, there may be a crunching noise and extraneous noise.

If internal parts wear out, changing the oil in the Priora gearbox will not solve the problem at the root. Damaged transmission components must be replaced.

How to replace it yourself?

You can change the oil in the gearbox of a VAZ Priora 16 valve model of 2015 and other years of production with your own hands.

Tools and materials

The procedure for changing the substance occurs using:

  • wrench 17;
  • fresh lubricant;
  • a syringe with a connected transparent tube;
  • containers into which you will drain the “working off”;
  • clean rags.

You can learn about changing the lubricant yourself and all the nuances that the car owner will encounter during the task from the video shot by user ValeRiaN.

Stages of work

How to drain and fill fresh oil in a Priora gearbox:

  1. The car is driven into a garage with a pit, onto a lift or onto an overpass. This is important because you will have to gain access to the underside of the car.
  2. Depending on the fasteners, use a screwdriver or wrench to unscrew the engine mudguard fastenings. Set the splash guard aside.
  3. Locate the drain hole on the vehicle's transmission. Place a container under it. Unscrew the plug of the control or filler hole, if there is one, or remove the dipstick from the neck, this will reduce the pressure in the lubrication system when draining the “working off”. If access to the dipstick is difficult, remove the air filter housing and move it to the side.
  4. Using a wrench, unscrew the drain cover. Be careful when unscrewing. At first, the oil will come out of the system in a thin stream, but after the plug is completely unscrewed, it will begin to flow under great pressure. Use gloves. It is advisable that when draining the fluid the engine is not cold, due to this the substance will be more viscous and will drain out of the transmission faster.
  5. While the oil is draining, visually assess the condition of the drain plug. If it is too dirty, clean it of debris and wear and tear. Check the condition of the seal; if it is badly worn, it is recommended to replace the part. Otherwise, you may encounter a problem with lubricant leakage.
  6. When the liquid has drained, assess its condition. If the gearbox is functioning properly, it should be free of metal dust and other impurities. The presence of deposits indicates contamination of the unit, so it is recommended to wash it. To clean the transmission, the filler hole must be closed and flushing is performed using a special product. There is a large selection of such liquids; the product is purchased at a car store. To flush, pour about 1.3 liters of cleaner into the gearbox housing. Then the front part of the car must be hung, for this the wheels are placed on a jack. Start the engine and engage first gear, press the gas. Due to the fact that the front of the car is raised, you can drive in first gear for several minutes. After this, the procedure for draining the waste fluid from the system is repeated. If the flushing oil is too dirty after cleaning the unit, the procedure must be repeated. After this, wipe the drain and fill plug again.
  7. Remove the dipstick from the inspection neck to check the level.
  8. Now you can fill it, it is done through the control hole. You must pour fresh oil into the transmission using a syringe with a connected pipe, otherwise you will not be able to refuel the unit. One end of the hose is inserted into the control hole, on the other side the liquid is supplied into the system using a syringe. About 3.1 liters of oil is poured into the gearbox, the volume of the substance is controlled by the dipstick.
  9. When the filling procedure is completed, install the meter in place. Reinstall all previously removed components in reverse order. When the process is complete, take a test drive of the machine and check the lubricant level again.

Remove the dipstick from the inspection hole of the Priora gearbox. Unscrew the cap and drain the used oil from the box. Pour fresh lubricant into the unit, monitoring its volume by the level of the dipstick.

Preparatory activities

Changing the oil in a Priora gearbox consists of three stages: preparation, draining the waste and filling with new lubricant. Let's look at them in more detail. It should be remembered that the waste must be drained when the box is warm, it is better to do this immediately after a trip. Otherwise, you will have to leave and drive 2-3 km; idling the engine will not warm up the box. At the preparation stage, you need to collect some tools and available equipment:

Changing the lubricant in the Lada Priora gearbox

  • open-end wrench 17 for unscrewing the drain plug;
  • a container for used lubricant with low sides; usually a plastic canister with the side cut off is used;
  • a light source (an LED flashlight can be used) if there is insufficient lighting in the inspection hole;
  • a funnel for filling with a hermetically sealed tube 0.6-0.8 m long;
  • rags;
  • latex gloves;
  • protective glasses.

We drive the car into the inspection hole so that the left wheel is as close as possible to the edge of the hole; here the help of another person will be useful. This is necessary for more convenient access to the drain hole, which is located on the left side of the Priora gearbox housing. We secure the car with a handbrake or a wheel chock. If your vehicle has a sump guard installed, it will have to be removed. Now you can begin the replacement operation.

What boxes are on Priora?

The Lada Priora car was produced for 11 years, from 2007 to 2022, during which time the gearbox was changed several times, and in recent years they even began to install a robot, that is, a robotic transmission. Here is a list of gearboxes that were installed on this car, as well as engines with which the boxes were mounted:

Gearbox modelBrief description of the transmissionEngine model and power (hp)
VAZ 2170Old style rocker gearbox21114 (80), 21116 (87), 21126 (98)
VAZ 2180New model rocker gearbox21127 (106)
VAZ 2181Rosovaya21116 (87)
VAZ 2182Robotic (AMT)21127 (106)

The VAZ 2170 was inherited from the Lada Priora from the discontinued tenth family, so it is an ordinary tenth box with minor changes, so the unit retained all the shortcomings of the original device. By 2013, when it became clear that the manual gearbox (manual transmission) did not meet the expectations of prior drivers, AvtoVAZ engineers modernized it and assigned the new unit the number 2180. The engineers managed to reduce the noise of the unit and slightly increase its reliability, but the price for this was reduction of the maximum permissible torque.

In 2012, AvtoVAZ engineers developed a new transmission, which took into account previous mistakes, resulting in a unit that was devoid of most of the shortcomings of previous manual transmissions, especially lever rattling. Another reduction in the maximum torque did not become a problem, because by this time it was possible to establish the production of powerful high-speed small-volume engines, so they began to install this unit on some Priora models.

In 2014, based on the 2181 transmission, Russian and German engineers (ZF concern) developed a robotic unit, which, although it retained the mechanism of the original box, operated in automatic mode thanks to electric drives (actuators). Nevertheless, the unit turned out to be not very successful, although truly successful robotic gearboxes are extremely rare around the world. Therefore, since 2014, potential Priora buyers have had a relatively large selection of transmissions, but there was no full-fledged automatic transmission.

Why is the correct amount of oil important?

The operating principle of a manual transmission is based on the transfer of kinetic energy between rotating gears, one of which is part of the input shaft, and the second, if necessary, is connected to the secondary shaft through a synchronizer. When certain gears are connected, the gear ratio ratio of the gearbox changes, and therefore the speed of the vehicle. The transfer of energy is accompanied by friction and heat, both factors can quickly destroy the thin layer of hardened metal on the surface of gears and shafts, so high-quality lubrication of rubbing surfaces is very important.

The effectiveness of these processes directly depends on how much oil is in the Priora gearbox. When the lubricant level is optimal, it is evenly distributed over all rubbing parts, reducing friction and removing excess heat from them. If the amount of oil in the Priora gearbox is lower than required, the following happens:

  • The amount of lubricant on the rubbing surfaces decreases, which causes wear of the thin layer of hardened metal to sharply increase (shaft bearings suffer the most).
  • The lubricant foams, causing its ability to remove heat from gears and bearings to drop sharply.
  • Due to the increased temperature, the oil quickly ages, which leads to a deterioration in its lubricating properties, as well as a decrease in viscosity (the lower the viscosity, the more liquid the lubricant becomes, which means the protective layer between the rubbing parts becomes thinner, which leads to an increase in their friction against each other friend).

Oil for gearbox "Priors"

At first, the drop in level does not manifest itself in any way, but when the wear of the thin hardened layer of metal reaches a critical value, the gears and bearings begin to howl at high speeds. The higher the rotation speed and the greater the wear, the louder the sound will be, so after the whine appears, adding oil will not correct the damage done, and there will not be many hundreds or thousands of kilometers left before the transmission is repaired or replaced. Therefore, it is very important to regularly, at least once a month, check how much oil is in the Priora gearbox in order to avoid a drop in the level and the negative consequences caused by this. If you eliminate the cause and add lubricant immediately after a leak, the unit will not suffer damage.

Moreover, after the problem appears, the leak does not disappear even after the level is normalized, so the overflow is followed by a drop in the level with all the ensuing consequences. In this regard, during filling, it is necessary to know exactly how much oil is in the Priora gearbox right now.

What kind of oil and how much should be poured into each box?

Lukoil TM-4-12 oil with a viscosity of 75W80 to 80W90, corresponding to API GL-4, is suitable for all boxes, because this is what is poured at the factory. Instead, you can use any semi-synthetic of the same viscosity that has the appropriate API approval. The main problem that arises when choosing a transmission fluid is that AvtoVAZ is not interested in the service life of this unit for too long, because then they will be able to sell less other transmissions. Therefore, in the question of which oil is best to choose for a Priora gearbox, it is necessary to rely on the opinion of professional mechanics and experienced prior drivers (as Priora owners are often called).

According to experienced prior drivers and professional car repairmen, it is better to fill the Priora box (16 valves) with the following brands of oil:

  • "NOVOIL TRANS KP" - 80W-85.
  • "ROSNEFT" KINETIC - 80W-85.
  • TNK "TRANS KP" - 80W-85.
  • TNK "TRANS KP SUPER" - 75W-90.
  • "TRANS KP-2" - 80W-85.
  • SHELL TRANSAXLE OIL - 75W-90.

Oils and manufacturers

For any Lada Priora model, the oil volume in the gearbox should be (liters):

  • 2170 – 3,5.
  • 2180 – 3,1.
  • 2181 – 2,2.
  • 2182 – 2,25.

These values must be adhered to.

How to check the oil level after filling

Some experts advise pouring oil into the Priora gearbox in the same volume that was drained, however, this approach has a significant drawback - it is not known whether the level was maintained, so if there was not enough oil, then the insufficient level will remain after filling, which means , very soon the unit will fail. Most gearboxes have a dipstick that shows the lubricant level; if you have one, pull it out, wipe it with a clean, lint-free rag and insert it all the way into the box. Then pull it out again and check the oil level.

If there is no dipstick, or it has been worn off by the teeth of the gears, then use the inspection window on the left side of the transmission housing - as soon as the level reaches the optimal value, the lubricating fluid will begin to flow out through this hole, this will help you find out how much oil is in the Priora gearbox.

Replacement frequency and lubricant selection

The manufacturer has determined that oil changes in the Priora gearbox are required at intervals of 75 thousand km. This is a fairly large gap, designed for the fact that synthetic-based oil will be poured into the box. The conditions in which the vehicle is operated often dictate a reduction in this interval. For example, the car constantly “walks under a trailer” or with increased loads on the transmission.

Then it is better to remove the oil level dipstick as often as possible and monitor not only the lubricant level, but also the technical condition: contamination and fluidity, especially if the service mileage is more than 50 thousand km. Another reason for early replacement of the lubricant in the box can be buying a car second-hand without marks in the service book. The answer to the question of what kind of oil to pour into the Priora transmission should be sought first of all in the car’s operating instructions.

Traditionally, AvtoVAZ recommends products for use. Lubricant produced by the same company is poured into the gearbox of new VAZ cars; it acts as a break-in and flushing lubricant until the first maintenance; after replacing it, you can select a product from another company. Here are brief recommendations on how to choose the right gear oil for the VAZ 2170.

  1. The viscosity grade must correspond to that specified in the operating instructions.
  2. It is not recommended to use mineral based oil. The service mileage determined by the manufacturer is accepted for synthetic or semi-synthetic oils. When pouring mineral water, you will not be able to correctly determine the service interval, because the mineral base deteriorates faster than the synthetic one.
  3. It is preferable to purchase liquid lubricants from official dealers located in your city. This may also be useful in an unusual situation, when you need to add oil to the gearbox due to a leak. A sales representative will help you choose the right brand of oil for topping up.
  4. You should not add various additives and additives to your gear oil. As a rule, all the necessary additives are already present in the lubricant; nothing else is needed.
  5. Before purchasing, you should read reviews about this product. This can be done on the Internet, filtering out rave reviews from agents selling lubricants.

Changing the Priora gearbox oil: volume, consequences of overflow

The manufacturing company recommends changing the gearbox oil every 75 thousand kilometers or every 5 years. We described in detail the list of oils suitable for pouring into the box in one of the articles on our website.

General recommendations for selection

If you bought a new Priora from an official dealer, the gearbox is filled with temporary lubricant Lukoil TM 412, intended for break-in. After a certain time during maintenance, the lubricant must be replaced with a new one that meets all the parameters specified in the vehicle manual. For example, you can use Castrol 75W90 Syntrax Universal or ZIC 75W90 GF TOP.

Necessary tools for work

Changing the oil in a Priora gearbox will require you to use the following set of items and tools:

  • a set of keys;
  • gloves;
  • old canister or 5-liter bottle;
  • watering can;
  • lift or pit;
  • new oil in a volume of 3.5 liters of class GL-4;
  • rags.

As you understand, transmission fluid is located inside the Priora gearbox. The unit itself is bolted and attached to the car engine. You can see it by opening the hood and looking at the bottom of the engine. A dipstick comes out of the gearbox, designed to check how much oil is in the Priora gearbox at a particular moment.

When to change the oil?

As we said, the oil in the Priora gearbox is changed at least every 75 thousand kilometers. At the same time, experts advise reducing the frequency to at least 50 thousand kilometers, which is due to the harsh operating conditions for cars in our country.

When draining the liquid, be sure to check it for metal shavings and other foreign matter. They indicate wear of the mechanism, and in this case you need to change your driving style, or you will not be able to avoid a major overhaul of the gearbox, which is very expensive.

The process of changing the oil in a Priora box

Since the gearbox is located near the engine, when the engine is running, both units heat up, including the oil. It is better to change the oil when the engine is warm, since in this case the liquid becomes more fluid and drains better from the most secluded corners, and all contaminants come out with it.

Thus, if your car is cold, take the time to start it and take a short drive for 10-15 minutes.

Idling does not count, since in this case the gears of the gearbox do not work, and the gearbox will remain cold even after the engine warms up to operating temperature.

Drain the oil

When starting work on replacing the fluid, you need to find out the required volume of oil in the Priora gearbox and buy lubricant in the store. Next, crawl under the bottom of the car and unscrew the drain plug, first replacing the prepared container. The used liquid will begin to drain. If necessary, you can dismantle the protection if you have one.

The oil will pour out quickly at first, and then the process will slow down. To speed up the process, pull the dipstick out of the upper hole, which will create a vacuum and the oil will completely drain.

Filling with new fluid

Before pouring new oil into the gearbox, do not tighten the drain plug and pour literally 50-100 g of lubricant into the filler neck so that it pours out from below, washing out the remaining old oil.

Screw the drain bolt into place and thoroughly wipe everything with a rag, removing any smudges. Clamp it with a key and start pouring lubricant, but do not overdo it, otherwise you will have to drain it again or suck out the excess with a syringe.

Pour out the lubricant gradually, checking the level with a dipstick.

What is the danger of overfilling the gearbox?

You need to figure out what the consequences of overfilling the oil in the Priora gearbox can be? First of all, the lubricant will begin to foam, the pressure in the system will increase and the oil seals and rubber seals will be damaged. Oil may also begin to escape through the dipstick hole.

To avoid oil overflow, do not rush to fill the box with the entire volume of lubricant recommended by the manufacturer. Fill most of it and leave the car for 10 minutes until the oil drains completely down, and then check the level again. If necessary, add fluid to the maximum mark.

First oil change in a used car

Having bought a used Priora, you will not be able to accurately determine what kind of oil was poured into the box. In this case, we recommend flushing the system with flushing oil. It must be filled according to the instructions described above, start the engine and change gears. The machine should run for 5-6 minutes, after which the engine can be turned off.

Drain the flushing fluid through the drain plug from below and fill the system with new oil that meets all the necessary parameters. This way you will ensure a long service life even for a gearbox with high mileage.

Variety of choices

Types of gearbox oil

With all its advantages, synthetics still act as a “provocateur” of leaks through auto gaskets at too high temperatures. Here, mineral competitors undoubtedly win. But they age much faster, and, therefore, they need to be poured more often. Which is not always beneficial. Semi-synthetics also have their place. It is lower in price and not bad in quality. Which oil is better is a solvable question. Mostly by experience.

Gearbox Lubricant

Oil viscosity is assessed by temperature level. At high temperatures, kinematic viscosity is measured, at low temperatures, dynamic viscosity is measured. The first determines the fluidity of the liquid, the second determines the rate of its thickening. Based on this data, we determine which one to pour.

SAE viscosity grade is from 75W-80 (90) at ambient temperatures from -40 to +350 C. If the lowest temperature is 260 C, then the viscosity is 80 W-85. At low temperatures no more than -12 degrees, and above zero reaches 45, the viscosity corresponds to: 80 W-90.

The main task of lubrication is to help the transmission element function better in both heat and cold.

And here you need to understand the principle of operation of a car’s manual transmission. During the operation of this unit, friction pairs are formed. And it is the lubricant of the required quality, flowing into these same vapors, that promotes the dynamic operation of the main gear and controls the entire box as a whole.

Gearbox of a Lada Priora car

Noise or crunching noise, as well as the squealing of gears when changing gears, indicates the low quality of the fluid used.

The Lada Priora operating instructions will tell the car owner what to pour into the working element. The dealership also has an advantage on this path. When deciding which oil to give preference to, you should not neglect the advice of experts. And it will be the right choice!

Lada Granta, Lada Priora and Lada Kalina 2nd generation cars are equipped with the same type of gearbox. If we are talking about “mechanics”, then this is the famous manual transmission 2180-2181. An automated transmission (AMT) is also built on this basis. And the Jatco automatic transmission from Nissan is currently installed only on the Lada Granta and Kalina 2. Let's consider the process of changing the oil in the 2181 gearbox and automatic transmission in detail.

Changing the oil in manual transmission and AMT

The oil change in the gearbox of Lada models should be done every 75 thousand km, or after 5 years, whichever comes first. The process is not complicated and will take no more than an hour.

About the volume of oil in the gearbox . Depending on the type of manual transmission, different amounts of gear oil may be required:

  • Manual transmission with traction control drive - 3.1 liters.
  • Manual transmission with cable control drive or AMT (robot) - 2.25 liters.

You will need : a set of keys, new gear oil, an empty container, a funnel and a hose. Warm up the oil in the gearbox (drive 5-10 km) so that it becomes less viscous.

Procedure:

  1. We find the drain hole on the gearbox housing from the bottom of the car and unscrew it using a “17” wrench.
  2. We drain the old gear oil into an empty container, which we place under the drain hole.
  3. We fill in new transmission oil through a hose that we insert (depending on the type of manual transmission): instead of a dipstick (for convenience, the air filter housing can be unscrewed and moved to the side), or instead of the reverse switch, which we unscrew with a “22” key.

Attention! If the oil drained from the gearbox is dark in color and metal particles are visible in it, the gearbox should be washed. Pour 1-1.5 liters of special flushing oil into the box crankcase. With one of the front wheels hanging, start the engine and shift into gear. After 5-7 minutes, drain the flushing oil and fill with clean transmission oil.

Depending on the type of manual transmission, checking the oil level in the gearbox is carried out:

  • using the dipstick (the oil level should be between the MIN and MAX marks).
  • through the inspection plug (the oil level should be at the lower edge of the inspection hole).

In this regard, during filling, it is necessary to know exactly how much oil is in the Priora gearbox right now.

How many liters of oil are in the Priora box: manual transmission and robot

According to the advice of car enthusiasts, when replacing, it is worth filling 4 liters at once, and the technical regulations indicate that only 3.2-3.5 liters should be poured into a manual transmission. The automatic transmission is filled with 2-2.5 liters. Checking the oil volume in the gearbox of a Priora car (16 and 8 valves) is carried out not only if there is a suspicion of its deficiency, but also after replacement. This way you can test yourself.

There are two marks on the engine dipstick - maximum/minimum. The principle remains the same: if the marks are somewhere between two marks, everything is fine with the gearbox, and if they are stuck at a minimum, it’s time to top it up, or even think about replacing it - so that the transmission works with fresh fluid.

From experience: when I poured 3.5 liters, when I turned on the reverse gear, the synchronizers creaked - after pouring more than 200-300 grams, this grinding noise went away when turned on.

View from the outside

A convenient and comfortable Priora car is one of the budget representatives of the sedan class. Manual transmission two-shaft, 5-speed. The box is assembled from three parts (sealant is placed between them): clutch housing, gearbox housing, rear cover.

A magnet located in the clutch housing socket holds metal debris and shavings. The drive gears of the input shaft are meshed with the forward gears. Oil is supplied to the driven gears through the hollow secondary shaft. It houses the forward gear synchronizers.

This unit is well assembled. And the synchronizers on the main switches are proof of this. Their operation is clearly adjusted, which reduces wear on the mechanical connection and noise when shifting gears. Accordingly, more durable operation of the Priora gearbox is ensured. But while monitoring the oil level, we should not forget that the quality of Russian roads leaves much to be desired. And this is one of the reasons for more frequent lubricant changes.

Leaks on the gearbox housing are also a motivating signal to action.

In order to check the transmission oil level, you must first place the car on a flat surface. Wait until the engine cools down completely. Remove the dipstick from the hole in the top of the box. Wipe it with a clean dry cloth and put it back

Then take out the dipstick again and pay attention to the marks located on it. The level should reach the maximum value

Visually assess the quality of the work. The main thing is not to miss the time when you need to pour new oil into the box.

Checking the lubricant level in the Lada Priora gearbox with a dipstick

The oil itself has two components: a base and an additive package. If the chemical composition of the base (base) is responsible for the property of the material, then additives correct the performance characteristics. This includes maintaining a certain temperature. The working fluid must not foam!

Playing the role of a lubricant, the oil also serves as a “broom”, cleaning the gearbox from technical debris.

You will need to: remove the engine protection, prepare the “17” head, funnel, hose and warm up the gearbox (it is recommended to change the transmission oil after a long trip).

To drain the Priora transmission oil, clean the area around the drain hole from dirt. Place a container with a volume of at least 3.5 liters under the drain hole. Then..

  1. Unscrew the drain plug using a 17mm wrench.
  2. Wait until the oil drains into the container. Then screw the plug back into place.

To fill the Priora box with oil:

  1. Use a funnel with a hose attached to it.
  2. Pull out the dipstick for checking the oil level in the gearbox.
  3. Add oil in small portions, checking the oil level using the dipstick.

The manufacturer recommends changing the oil in the Priora gearbox every 75,000 km. mileage

How much oil is in a Priora box? From the factory at the gearbox it is about 3.3-3.5 liters. transmission oil. However, if you fill in a little more, for example, 4 liters, then the box will be quieter. It is recommended to check the box for leaks after some time; if it is sealed, then there should be no leaks.

Step-by-step instruction

  1. We warm up the engine and let it run for 10 minutes, then turn it off;
  2. It is necessary to place an empty container under the drain hole - we will pour the old grease into it; The container should be placed under the drain plug and remove all oil from the system
  3. Use the key to “17” to gradually unscrew the plug; the work must be done carefully; the oil will be hot; Unscrew the plug carefully
  4. Now you need to wait until the liquid completely leaves the 16-valve system. We tighten the plug, the next step is to replace the oil filter;
  5. If you have a special key, you can easily remove the filter. You can also try doing this by hand. If the filter does not budge, take a sharp screwdriver, pierce the housing and use the tool as a lever; Unscrew the oil filter using a special wrench or manually
  6. Before installing a new filter, you need to fill it with oil (about half) and lubricate the gasket with it. This is done to prevent “starvation”, that is, the engine will not run dry. We install the new component and tighten it;
  7. Now you need to fill the oil: unscrew the neck, it is located under the hood. Fill in about 3.2 liters and check the fluid level using a dipstick. If the level is between MAX and MIN on the dipstick, then you can tighten the plug. If there is a shortage, you need to fill in another 0.5 liters and check the volume again; Pour oil into the engine system and check the level with a dipstick
  8. We start engine 16, it should run for 5-10 minutes at idle speed. Sit behind the wheel and watch the lubricant pressure indicator; it should stop working immediately after starting the engine. While the power plant is operating, you should examine the places where the work was carried out. It is necessary to ensure that there is no damage to the system;
  9. We turn off the engine, wait 5 minutes and check the level. If it drops slightly below normal, add fluid;
  10. Done, engine fluid replacement is complete.

What oil is better to use?

At the factory, during the production of cars, specialists fill in transmission fluid Lukoil TM 412, but its use is allowed only for running in the car. According to the manufacturer's recommendations, after some time the car owner should change the substance to a more recent one, taking into account the parameters specified in the service manual. The manufacturer advises using synthetics or semi-synthetics that correspond to the viscosity class 75W-90.

But here a lot depends on the region of operation, especially if you add oil for the winter:

  • 75W - such a product begins to crystallize at a temperature of -45°C, but its thickening occurs already at -30;
  • 80W - the oil loses its properties at -15°C, as it begins to thicken, but the liquid completely solidifies at -30;
  • a liquid with a viscosity class of 85W thickens already at -10°C, and it can solidify at a frost of -15.

As consumer reviews show, many car owners use Castrol 75W-90 Syntrax Universal or Zik Top oil with the same viscosity class. It is possible to use products from other manufacturers; it is important that the liquid is of high quality.

The RamaZ-Life channel provided a video that describes the problem of noise appearing from the gearbox of a Lada Priora car.

List of recommended oils for Priora

The Tolyatti Automobile Plant prematurely gave its answer: “what to fill.” A whole list has been compiled of what can be poured into the Lada Priora gearbox with justification - a link to standards that confirm the quality of the product of each manufacturer.

The list of recommended automotive lubricants for the Lada Priora gearbox is as follows:

  • Rosneft KINETIC 75W-90 from 40 to 35; 80W-85;
  • Novoil Trans KP 80W-85;
  • Lukoil TM 412 75W-80, 75W-85, 75W-90, 80W-85, 80W-90;
  • THK Trans KP 80W-85; THK Trans KP Super 75W-90;
  • Tatneft Translux TM4-12 75W-85;
  • Shell Spirax; Shell Transaxle Oil 75W-90;
  • Trans KP-2 80W-85.

An important clarification regarding API groups: for almost all oils this is GL4, with the exception of Rosneft Kinetic 75W-90, Shell - they correspond to GL 4/5. The difference in viscosity is as follows:

  1. 75W is the degree of viscosity at which the crystallization (freezing) temperature is -45֯С, and begins to thicken at -30֯С;
  2. 80W is the degree of viscosity, which corresponds to a crystallization temperature of -30°C, and it begins to thicken at -15°C;
  3. 85W is the degree of viscosity for which crystallization begins at -15֯, and already at -10֯ it thickens.

Quality of transmission oils

Kinetic viscosity promotes the movement of oil into friction pairs. The main gear is loaded in pairs. The highest indicator is at 100° C, where there is ideal operation of the gearbox elements and friction vapors. Lubricants with strong viscosity create conditions for increased temperature, increased resistance and pressure.

Lubricant is squeezed out through the gaskets. The kinetic viscosity index is significantly low and affects the transmission in general. Dynamic viscosity - at low temperatures, in winter the shear resistance of the grease is performed. This is a rather bad indicator for transmission operation.

Pour point is a value that shows the hardness of the oil in the cold season. However, even during hardening, there is a possibility that the wheels will turn without torque. Viscosity index is an indicator that characterizes the change in viscosity of a transmission lubricant in relation to temperature. If you want your car to behave normally on the road, then you need to monitor the gearbox. Constant checking and maintenance of technical condition are very important in the operation of car components.

The transmission oil in the Lada Priora gearbox is checked according to the maintenance regulations after 15,000 km and when leaks are detected on the gearbox housing. To check, the machine must only be in a horizontal position, on a level plane. The motor must cool down. There is a hole at the top of the gearbox for the oil level indicator (dipstick). There are marks on it that will show the amount of oil.

Classification scheme for various brands of oils

To get accurate readings, the meter must be dry. The dipstick needs to be wiped with a rag, inserted into the opening, then removed again. The oil indicator should be at the maximum marking line. This will be the optimal value for Priora.

What is needed to perform maintenance?

The process of changing the lubricant itself is simple and takes about an hour. If desired, you can do it yourself, without using the services of service stations and auto repair shops. For this you will need:

  1. A garage with a pit, a lift or an overpass.
  2. Wrench 17.
  3. Fresh transmission oil.
  4. Syringe with a transparent tube.
  5. Containers for used oil.
  6. Rags.

If maintenance has not been performed for a long time, a special cleaning agent will be added to the list of necessary materials. It is poured in front of the transmission oil and the box is washed with it.

Useful conclusions

  • If you fill a Priora with a fuel oil that does not match the viscosity parameters presented, problems will arise;
  • Typically, if the car is new, the owner wants to maintain the warranty for maintenance and oil changes. The advice in this case is this: do not fill in any oil other than mineral or semi-synthetic;
  • If the owner cannot find high-quality vehicles on his own, it is recommended to contact dealers;
  • Customer reviews are an important factor influencing the independent choice of oil;
  • Do not use additives or other “high performance” lubricants.

When is it necessary to change the oil in the Lada Priora gearbox?

The manufacturer recommends that on all Lada Priora cars with a manual transmission, change the lubricant after every 75,000 km or once every five years with little use of the car.

However, experienced car owners say that an oil change in the Priora gearbox is required more often - after every 30,000 - 40,000 km.

The following vehicle malfunctions are a signal for such maintenance:

  • Crackling or crunching sounds when applying reverse gear;
  • Poorly functioning second or third gear;
  • Minimum oil level when measured with a dipstick;
  • Performed manual transmission repairs, replacement of seals, gaskets, and other repair work.

Cars with an automatic transmission require replacing or topping up the oil in the box only when the car is being repaired, since the entire required volume is supplied by the factory upon release and is not consumed during operation.

Recommended AvtoVAZ oil for Lada Priora

Not all car enthusiasts know, but the oil in manual transmissions also needs to be changed at a frequency clearly indicated by the manufacturer.

Of course, unlike automatic machines, where deviation from the scheduled replacement dates is fraught with the appearance of problems quite quickly, mechanics are more resistant to untimely renewal of the lubricant.

However, abuse of timing for changing transmission oil will at a minimum lead to a reduction in the service life of manual transmission parts, and in severely advanced cases can cause serious damage.

Lukoil TM-4

What kind of oil should be poured into the gearbox of a Lada Priora? Under factory assembly conditions, different oils were poured into the manual transmission at different times. The main criterion by which it was selected was the class according to technical conditions (or GOST).

For Priora, the manufacturer recommends using TM-4-12 class lubricant. This gear oil has successfully passed all tests in the factory laboratory and has been approved by the manufacturer as suitable for use in manual transmissions.

How much oil should I pour into the Priora engine?

The oil volume recommended by the manufacturer for the Priora engine, both 8- and 16-valve, is 3.5 liters. This is what is considered the norm and it is highly advisable to adhere to these values.

  • If you fill less than required, you can get oil starvation under critical loads on the engine, which will lead to rather sad consequences
  • With an increased oil level in the internal combustion engine, negative aspects may also be present - up to the release of “excess” through the seals or the crankcase ventilation hose into the inlet pipe of the air filter

That is why it is better to follow the factory recommendations. If the engine begins to consume oil, there is no need to pour in excess, as they say - just add a certain amount as needed.

Replacement

The replacement procedure itself should take place after the car has been driven for a long time so that the oil is not very thick. And the box itself warms up well during this time.

The operation should be carried out like this:

  • Remove the Priora engine protection;
  • Clean the crankcase drain hole from dirt;
  • Unscrew the plug, placing some container in advance;
  • Wait until the lubricant is completely drained and screw the plug back on;
  • Fill in the required amount of fuel fluid (the amount that is drained is the same amount that is added). The level is checked with a special probe.

How much oil is in the gearbox on a Priora?

If we take the well-known old gearbox model from 2108, then despite all the modernization of the internal part - shafts, gears, synchronizers - the filling volume remains the same and is 3.1 liters.

But even many official factory-approved operating manuals share the opinion that it is best to add a little more for better lubrication of the fifth gear. If according to the instructions the required level in the box is considered to be about 0, then in real operating conditions it is better to fill it slightly above the level, about 5 mm.

Also, if you notice that the oil level in your Priora’s gearbox is gradually decreasing, this most likely indicates a possible leak through the seals. It is worth carefully inspecting the lower part of the crankcase for such problems, and eliminating them if they occur.

How often to change

The factory's recommendations for changing the oil in the Priora gearbox are clearly indicated: once every five years, or every 75 thousand km. The parameter that occurs first is taken into account. This lubricant service life is assumed when the car is operated under normal conditions.

It is recommended to shorten the period between subsequent replacements if there is one of the factors complicating operation:

  • more than 50% of car use occurs in urban mode, where frequent gear changes occur;
  • driving on sandy or snowy terrain;
  • towing trailers or another factor that requires the Priora transmission to operate under increased load;
  • using the vehicle in a climate zone with extremely low or high temperatures.

How much to reduce the oil change period in the Priora gearbox if the above factors exist? There is no exact answer. The best option would be to periodically check the condition of the lubricant.

How often to check the oil level in the box and after how long to change it - video recommendations

There are several methods. One of the simplest and most widely available is the drip test method. There is a lot of information on this topic on the Internet, so we will not separately analyze the methodology within the framework of this article.

Some drivers don’t bother, but simply update the lubricant in the box more often. Moreover, the service life is reduced to 30-40 thousand mileage between subsequent replacements.

It is also necessary to take into account the quality of the lubricant used. If it is ordinary mineral oil, then it is better not to delay it beyond the scheduled time.

Attention! As practice has shown, after 75 thousand kilometers, mineral-based lubricants decompose quite strongly and turn into useless slurry. Semi-synthetics and synthetics have a much longer service life. Especially if negative operational factors impacted with minimal intensity.

How to buy original oil

Surely many have encountered suspiciously high discounts on any products from well-known brands that are associated with almost nothing. As a rule, such discounts operate almost constantly and this is due to the fact that the oil is not original. This can be easily checked at the purchase stage.

When purchasing a product at a surprisingly low price, be sure to look at the GOST and certificate. If you are not completely sure, then simply enter the numbers printed on the packaging into a search engine. There you will find detailed information about the product. For any well-known and trusted brand, searching for information will not take more than a minute.

If you ignore this basic thing, then there is a risk of purchasing low-quality oil, which not only will not help correct problems with the transmission and gearbox, but will also worsen the existing situation. You should especially not miss this rule when contacting a previously unknown auto shop.
