It is then that we remember the existence of these miracle devices that can so easily and effortlessly do all the dirty work or simply provide us with normal visibility in the rain, necessary for safe movement.

According to the “law of meanness,” the wipers will stop working exactly at the moment when it rains, snows, or when the glass needs cleaning. But this doesn’t make it any easier; the fault needs to be eliminated, but before that it wouldn’t hurt to find it. In practice, it turned out that finding the reason why the engine does not start is much easier than understanding why the rear wiper of a VAZ 2109 does not work. To be honest, at first, I didn’t even know where to start and what to actually check, the mechanism is as simple as “two rubles” and what -there can be no failures, but the fact remains that the wiper does not work and does not react to anything.

3. Remove the blade arms from the windshield wiper rollers

Note. If the lever cannot be removed by hand, unscrew the lever securing nut without unscrewing it completely so as not to damage the thread. Using pliers, pull the lever off the shaft splines, completely unscrew the nut and remove the lever.

4. Remove one protective cap from both sides.

5. Unscrew one nut of the upper bracket fastening on both sides.

6. Remove the rubber leveling washers from both sides.

7. Open the hood and disconnect the wiper wiring harness connector. Then move the heater fan to the right along the compartment in front of the windshield (see “Removing and installing the heater fan”), otherwise it will interfere with the removal of the windshield wiper.

8. Remove the cover of the relay and fuse mounting block by releasing the cover latches.

9. Remove all relays from the block so that they do not interfere with removing the windshield wiper.

10. Remove the bolt from the lower fastening of the windshield wiper bracket.

11. Squeeze the plastic wire holder and remove it from the hole in the body.

12. Remove the holder from the wires so as not to lose it.

13. Remove the rollers of the windshield wiper mechanism from the holes in the body.

14. Move the windshield wiper so that its motor is in the wide part of the compartment in front of the windshield (heater fan installation location). Turn the windshield wiper and remove the wiper motor from the compartment. Slide the wiper towards the relay and fuse box and remove it from the compartment.

15. Unscrew the nut securing the windshield wiper crank...

16. ...and remove the crank from the gearbox shaft by prying it with a screwdriver.

17. Remove the three bolts securing the gearbox with the electric motor.

18. Remove the two screws securing the electric motor wires and disconnect the wires from the thermobimetallic fuse. Remove the engine from the bracket.

19. Remove the retaining ring from the gearbox shaft.

20. Remove the adjusting washers from the gearbox shaft.

Note. Mark the shims so that when reassembling you install them in the same places and in the same quantity.

21. Remove the three mounting screws...

22. ...and remove the gearbox cover.

Warning! When disassembling, do not unscrew the adjusting screw, otherwise the axial clearance of the armature shaft will be disrupted.

23. Remove the panel from the gearbox.

24. Remove the reduction gear.

25. Remove two screws (the second is located behind the gearbox housing)…

26. ...and remove the two cage nuts.

27. Remove the gear housing with brush holder from the electric motor housing.

28. Remove the armature from the engine housing. After disassembly, blow the motor housing with compressed air to remove carbon dust.

29. Remove the retaining rings from both rollers of the windshield wiper mechanism...

30. ...and adjusting washers.

31. Remove the rods from the wiper bracket and remove the adjusting washers from both shafts.

32. Remove the O-rings from the grooves on both sides of the bracket.

Note. Further disassembly of the rod system is impossible, since the rods are of a non-separable design: 1 – crank; 2 – short thrust; 3 – rod joint; 4 – rollers of the windshield wiper mechanism; 5 – long pull.

33. If the brush springs are damaged or have lost their elasticity, replace them.

34. Check the ease of movement of the brushes in the brush holder. They should move freely without jamming. Replace worn or chipped brushes. When replacing, solder the leads of the new brushes to the brush holder

35. Clean the collector with fine-grained sandpaper if it is dirty or has marks, scratches, etc. If the commutator is badly worn or burnt, replace the armature or gearbox with electric motor assembly. If you find traces of jamming on the armature journals, clean the journals with fine-grained sandpaper.

36. Replace a gearbox with severely worn or broken teeth.

37. Straighten bent rods. If this is not possible, replace the linkage assembly.

38. If the splines or threads of the rollers are damaged, replace the rod assemblies.

39. Clean burnt or oxidized contacts of the self-stop mechanism with fine-grained sandpaper.

40. Replace torn, cracked or loose rubber cushions and other rubber parts.

41. Reassemble and install the windshield wiper in reverse order, taking into account the following:

make sure that when installing the armature into the housing, a thrust ball is installed in the shaft recess;
