How to choose the optimal lubricant for gearboxes
For gearboxes of all modifications of the VAZ 2110, the manufacturer recommends oils of 2 groups:
- SAE80W-85 (GL-4/GL-4/5);
- SAE75W-90 (GL-4/5).
The GL-4 index indicates that the oil is suitable for domestic cars with front-wheel drive. Index value GL-4/5 corresponds to a universal substance. According to the SAE classification, the main quality of the liquid is taken into account - viscosity. These indicators are worth paying attention to when a transmission replacement is approaching. To avoid having to wait for a long time in severe frosts with the clutch pedal depressed and the engine running, it is recommended to use SAE75W-90 fluid all year round. Changing the oil in a VAZ 2110 automatic machine
Replacing the lubricant in an automatic transmission slightly different from replacing it in a manual transmission. Note that replacement must be carried out every 75 thousand km (although in different sources, you can find from 30 to 130 thousand km ). An earlier replacement may be required if there are extraneous sounds and crackling noises in the gearbox.
There are two ways to change the mixture in an automatic transmission:
Partial. When the liquid is drained through the drain hole without removing the pan (or with its removal). At this moment, about half of the total volume - that is, approximately 4 liters . And then you need to add fresh oil to the maximum.
Full. There is a choice here: either do method twice with a break 10-15 km between them mix while driving ) or completely replace the fluid at one time.
To change the mixture in an automatic transmission, the steps are as follows:
- Find the location of the supply hose from automatic transmission fluid radiator fitting disconnect it.
- take the required container ( volume 5 liters) and place the hose in it.
- set neutral and start the engine. Gradually, the waste begins to flow into the prepared container.
Motor operation should be limited one minute. If operated for a longer period of time, the transmission pump may be damaged
- stop the engine.
- Before adding new mixture, remove the dipstick.
- Now you need to fill in 5.5 liters of the mixture. Then, using a syringe , another 2 liters .
- After completing this action, you need to start the engine again and drain 3.5 liters of fluid through the outlet hose.
- stop the engine again. And using a hose, fill in another 3.5 liters .
These steps must be repeated until 8 liters of mixture have been drained through the hose .
When all the actions are completed, you need to drive . And then the mixture level needs to be checked . It is important that the fluid level matches the mark on the gauge. If necessary, liquid must be added.
Level control and required volume
While operating the vehicle, it is necessary to regularly check the oil level in the gearbox. According to the factory instructions, control is carried out once every 15 thousand kilometers, but in practice it is advisable to carry out this operation 2-3 times more often.
To check the level, you need to remove the dipstick located on the top of the box housing next to the thermostat housing. There are two notches on the probe rod indicating the lower and upper limit levels. In a working box, the oil level should be slightly below the maximum level. If the level is insufficient, the oil must be added. To do this, fill in liquid from the same manufacturer and with the same parameters as before. If this information is unknown, then the oil must be changed.

When changing the lubricant, you need to know how much oil is in the VAZ 2110 box. According to factory standards, there are 3.5 liters of oil in the box. The oil volume does not depend on the number of valves on the engine, since the crankcase is the same. Therefore, to replace it, you need to buy a container with the same amount of new oil.
Sometimes, when filling, a little more than 3.5 liters enters the crankcase, but the level does not exceed the maximum permissible value. There is no need to pour more than 3.6 liters of oil into the box, as this causes increased resistance to gear rotation and increases fuel consumption. The second side effect of oil overflow can be squeezing out the wheel drive seals. It is better to pump out excess oil through the dipstick hole using a large-volume medical syringe equipped with a long tube.
Transmission seals
VAZ 2110 gearbox seals are replaceable parts. During checkpoint maintenance the following types of repairs may be carried out:
- Replacing the gear selector rod cuff.
- Replacing the gearbox oil seal on input shaft .
- Replacing gearbox seals, which are located on the front wheel drives .
Self-replacement
So, replacing the fluid yourself is not that difficult if you follow the guide . This will take about 40-60 minutes and the following tools:
- Container for draining waste liquid (its volume is 5 liters);
- Key to 17;
- Funnel;
- A special syringe that is used to fill transmission fluid;
- A clean rag (you can use newspaper);
- Rubber gloves (it is quite difficult to wash your hands of oil);
- New transmission fluid.
Sequence of work
The instructions instruct you to prepare for the work:
- Roll the car onto the pit (or lift)
- Having driven it first so that the box warms up
Note: You can drain the oil without removing the protection, since there is a hole in it. However, then, at the moment the cork is pulled out, the stream will rush onto the protection and spread over it, and from there to the floor, you see, is not very pleasant. It's easier to unscrew the protection and remove it.
- So, we remove the protection, and then proceed to replacement
- It is necessary to install a waste container under the drain hole, taking into account the stream, so as not to miss
- Using a prepared spanner wrench “17”, unscrew the plug from the drain hole
- Remove the plug and drain the oil into the container
- After waiting for it to completely drain (the stream has dried up), screw the plug back into place.
Advice: If the oil we drained from the box contains metal particles, and the oil itself is dark in color, then it is recommended to pre-rinse the box. To do this, pour 1-1.5 liters of flushing oil into the gearbox. Then you should hang up one of the drive wheels, start the engine and engage first gear. Stop the engine after 5 minutes, drain the flush and fill the VAZ 2110 with only new transmission oil (according to the manufacturer’s recommendations)
- Then we take out the dipstick with which we check the level (see the second photo after the heading “checking the level”)
- Wipe the dipstick with a rag
- Then install the funnel and pour lubricant into the hole from the dipstick, or use a syringe
- The VAZ 2110 oil for the gearbox includes 3.3 liters
- We control the level using the dipstick
- Then we return it to its place
The oil change is completed, in total it takes about 15-20 minutes (more than half of the time is spent on the grease draining), if you are too lazy to do it or get dirty, use the services of a service station, if the price suits you, in my opinion it’s easier and cheaper to do everything yourself.
