Changing the oil in a “Tens” gearbox (gearbox) is a simple and inexpensive procedure, the regularity of which directly determines the durability of the gearbox. Owners of VAZ 2110 cars need to have information about how much oil is in the VAZ 2110 box, how to check the level and how often to replace it.

When should you change?

According to the factory instructions, the service life of the oil in the VAZ 2110 gearbox is 75 thousand km. As practice shows, if a car is used in conditions of sudden temperature changes and in city traffic jams, then the frequency of oil changes should be reduced to 35-40 thousand km.

In addition to the scheduled oil change, there may be situations when the fluid should be changed immediately. A signal for an urgent oil change is the presence of metal dust or particles in the oil on the dipstick rod or noticeable thickening of the oil, not associated with its low temperature.

What criteria should you use to choose oil?

The oil poured into the gearbox of cars of the “tenth” family must meet the factory requirements:

  1. Viscosity according to the SAE standard 80W-85 or 75W-90 (the first number with the letter W in the designation describes the characteristics of the liquid in winter, and the second number corresponds to summer parameters).
  2. Complies with API GL-4 standards to protect copper-based alloy synchronizers from the aggressive effects of additives. The standard stipulates the possibility of using oil in gearboxes that have bevel pairs with hypoid gearing and operate under medium loads. The use of GL-4+ and GL-5 lubricants with an additional additive package is prohibited, since the wear rate of synchronizer rings increases.

It is allowed to fill the crankcase with mineral, synthetic or semi-synthetic oils. The advantage of mineral-based materials is their low cost; synthetic lubricants are recommended for use in regions with temperatures from -40 °C.

Semi-synthetic ones have a low freezing point and an expanded package of additives that protect contacting surfaces from accelerated wear. When switching from one type of oil to another, flushing the gearbox housing is not required, since the fluids are compatible.

Which oil is better to choose?

The factory instructions allow the use of oils that meet API standards - SG, SH, SJ. Depending on these parameters, the behavior of the oil in winter, at fairly low temperatures, differs. The lower the initial viscosity parameters, the lower the temperature the oil will withstand. For the winter, many owners of VAZ 2110 with an injector fill in standard 75W-90 oil.

Oils recommended by the car manufacturer include:

  • Valvoline Durablend 75W-90;
  • BP Energear HT 75W-90;
  • TNK Trans KP 75W-90;
  • Lukoil TM 4–12 80W-85;
  • Lada Trans KP 80W-85.

All the oils listed above comply with the API GL4 standard. Currently, the most commonly used brands are Lukoil, ZIC, Mannol. The final choice of oil type remains with the car owner. Many reviews give preference to ZIC G-FF 75W-85 oil.

The manufacturer does not have any special requirements for the use of oil with GL4 or GL5 standards. The oil should not have a class lower than GL4, and the use of more expensive GL5 oil is possible and depends on the desire of the car owner. There are a number of opinions that GL5 oils contribute to more intensive wear of synchronizers.

Factory standards of the VAZ 2110 gearbox

The designers of the VAZ 2110 automobile plant, when developing the concept of a variable speed gearbox, made an important conclusion:

  • The optimal replacement of lubricant in a manual transmission should be done after the car has driven 60 thousand kilometers.

There is no point in draining or adding oil prematurely, since the factory filling is designed for the specified mileage. The lubricant is replaced in emergency cases when water gets into the gearbox housing, a gear or other part breaks off.

Level control and required volume

While operating the vehicle, it is necessary to regularly check the oil level in the gearbox. According to the factory instructions, control is carried out once every 15 thousand kilometers, but in practice it is advisable to carry out this operation 2-3 times more often.

To check the level, you need to remove the dipstick located on the top of the box housing next to the thermostat housing. There are two notches on the probe rod indicating the lower and upper limit levels. In a working box, the oil level should be slightly below the maximum level. If the level is insufficient, the oil must be added. To do this, fill in liquid from the same manufacturer and with the same parameters as before. If this information is unknown, then the oil must be changed.

The video from the author of AVTOSERVISE SERGO clearly demonstrates topping up and checking the oil level.

When changing the lubricant, you need to know how much oil is in the VAZ 2110 box. According to factory standards, there are 3.5 liters of oil in the box. The oil volume does not depend on the number of valves on the engine, since the crankcase is the same. Therefore, to replace it, you need to buy a container with the same amount of new oil.

Sometimes, when filling, a little more than 3.5 liters enters the crankcase, but the level does not exceed the maximum permissible value. There is no need to pour more than 3.6 liters of oil into the box, as this causes increased resistance to gear rotation and increases fuel consumption. The second side effect of oil overflow can be squeezing out the wheel drive seals. It is better to pump out excess oil through the dipstick hole with a large-volume medical syringe equipped with a long tube.

Types of oils

First of all, you need to look at the instruction manual. VAZ 2110 gearbox

At the moment there are three types of liquids :

  • mineral
  • semi-synthetic
  • synthetic

The best option for the “ ten ” would be to choose synthetic fluid. It is perfect for operating the vehicle under any loads and conditions. Synthetics have excellent viscosity at different temperatures. Its main drawback is its high price.

An alternative to synthetic fluid is semi-synthetic . This mixture contains a mineral component. But, due to the addition of innovative additives, performance and physical properties are improved. And the presence of various chemical additives helps to reduce the shortcomings .

Mineral oil is preferred due to its low price. But it does not tolerate long-term and heavy loads .

Some drivers mix synthetic and mineral lubricants in the hope of getting semi-synthetics . This cannot be done, such a “cocktail” can have unpredictable consequences for the gearbox.

DIY oil change instructions

The oil change procedure is very simple and does not require special knowledge or tools. Any car owner can do it with his own hands. Before starting work, it is necessary to warm up the car and gearbox by driving at least 15–20 km.

Required Tools

After warming up the box, you will need to prepare tools and consumables:

  • an empty container with a capacity of at least 4 liters for draining used oil;
  • key of any type with a size of 17 mm;
  • rags;
  • a funnel with a hose with a diameter of no more than 10-12 mm;
  • canister with fresh oil.

Algorithm of actions

The procedure for changing the oil is as follows:

  1. Place the car on a horizontal pit or overpass.
  2. Remove the dipstick from the gearbox housing.
  3. If the engine and gearbox protection is installed below, it must be removed.
  4. Wipe the lower part of the crankcase with a rag and use a 17 mm wrench to unscrew the drain plug.
  5. Place the container and drain the oil. Complete draining of the oil takes at least 15 minutes.
  6. Wipe the plug and threads with a clean rag.
  7. Screw the plug in by hand and tighten it with a wrench.
  8. Install a hose with a funnel into the dipstick hole and fill in approximately 3.3 liters of fresh oil.
  9. Wait a few minutes for the oil to drain into the crankcase and check the level.
  10. If necessary, add oil or pump out excess.
  11. After 200-300 km, re-check the level and make sure there are no oil leaks through the drain plug or box seals.

Transmission seals

VAZ 2110 gearbox seals are replaceable parts. During checkpoint maintenance the following types of repairs may be carried out:

  • Replacing the gear selector rod cuff.
  • Replacing the gearbox oil seal on input shaft .
  • Replacing gearbox seals, which are located on the front wheel drives .

What will happen if you don't change?

Failure to promptly change the oil in the gearbox significantly reduces the life of the unit. Transmission oils contain a whole range of additives that effectively remove corrosion products on steel gearbox parts and facilitate the operation of bronze synchronizers. Over time, these additives lose their properties and wear of parts increases with old oil. In addition, the oil serves to remove heat from gearbox components; the older the lubricant, the worse it provides heat removal. Metal particles generated during operation of the box will also have a negative effect. They will get into the bearings and contact spots of the gears, increasing their wear.

Self-replacement

So, replacing the fluid yourself is not that difficult if you follow the guide . This will take about 40-60 minutes and the following tools:

  • Container for draining waste liquid (its volume is 5 liters);
  • Key to 17;
  • Funnel;
  • A special syringe that is used to fill transmission fluid;
  • A clean rag (you can use newspaper);
  • Rubber gloves (it is quite difficult to wash your hands of oil);
  • New transmission fluid.

Summer oils

Summer transmission fluids are used in the warm season (which follows quite logically from the name). This type is great for use in areas that have noticeable temperature differences between seasons.

Summer lubricants have the following markings:

  • 90W
  • 140W
  • 250W

Required volume of oil in the VAZ 2110-2112 engine

So, since the days of the old carburetor engines from 2108, nothing has changed fundamentally, and therefore the filling volumes in the engine remained the same. Even if we take into account the 16-valve modifications of the VAZ 21124 engines, the cylinder block is essentially the same, the pan is the same size, which means the engine oil level remains the same 3.5 liters.

It is noteworthy that 8-valve engines are no different. But still, when replacing, you should pay attention to the MAX and MIN marks on the dipstick. Since first of all you need to pour a little oil into the oil filter, say 300 ml, then 3.2 liters remain in the filler neck.

But if you take into account the fact that it is impossible to drain all the oil when changing, then it is better to use the dipstick so that the level is between the MIN and MAX marks.

Substitution rules

Drain and fill plug

  1. Oil is added to the transmission depending on the time of year. That is, in the warm season, summer is poured, in winter - winter, plus there are all-season compositions.
  2. Follow an important rule for preparing the transmission for changing the lubricant, which requires mandatory pre-warming of the vehicle.
  3. Use exclusively certified transmissions with a quality guarantee.
  4. Check the condition of the oil in the gearbox after every 10 thousand kilometers traveled.
  5. Optimal operating conditions for increasing the service life of the gearbox are smooth acceleration, the use of a standard braking system, as well as driving at a speed of 100-120 kilometers per hour (highways, highways, but not within the city).
  6. Use the correct gear shift pattern, do not overspeed, and depress the clutch pedal smoothly.
  7. If you cannot find the oil specified in the instruction manual, look for a composition that is as close as possible in terms of parameters. With the current range of transmission fluids, this is not a problem.

What is the best oil to put in a VAZ 2110 box and how to replace it yourself?

Currently, the domestic market offers a huge number of motor oils intended for gearboxes. The driver must be able to choose the right one and know how to pour it into the box himself.

Before visiting an auto store, you should carefully study the manual for the VAZ 2110 vehicle, in which the manufacturer gives recommendations regarding the quality of fluid suitable for filling into the gearbox.

Today, world-famous manufacturers present the following types of gearbox oil to domestic car enthusiasts:

  1. Synthetic;
  2. Mineral;
  3. Semi-synthetic.

How to choose oil

For a VAZ 2112, what oil to fill in the gearbox is the most pressing question that is asked more often than how to fill and where to fill the oil. To extend the service life of the gearbox, it is recommended to use only high-quality oil purchased from a company store and recommended exclusively for your gearbox:

  • Some enthusiasts are sure that it is possible to pour motor oil into the gearbox instead of transmission oil; in fact, for the VAZ 2112, what kind of oil is poured into the box matters
  • This is a big mistake, in Soviet times of shortages, it was difficult to find transmission oil on the open market for Soviet cars
  • But motor cars were easier to find on sale, and drivers began to use them at checkpoints.
  • Now, with a huge selection of transmissions, it is recommended to use exclusively transmissions, and those recommended by the manufacturer individually for each model
  • Our considered model of VAZ 2112
  • And for the VAZ 2112 it is prescribed to use transmission oil in the box, this will allow you to extend the service life and avoid additional problems with the gearbox
  • However, the main criterion when changing the oil in a gearbox is the condition of the lubricant; if a poor quality one is used, it is better to perform the next change earlier, before irreparable consequences arise for gearbox parts
  • A transmission running on such oil may crunch or click when gears are engaged, and subsequently such operation leads to breakage of transmission parts
  • The question for the VAZ 2112, which oil to pour into the box, remains relevant
  • Here you should listen to the recommendations of the car manufacturer; according to his recommendation, GL-4 oil, according to the international API classification, is ideal
  • For example, shell 75W90 meets this standard; it is on the list of acceptable ones by the manufacturer, which means it is suitable for the VAZ2112

How much to fill

It would be logical to determine the volume of oil before pouring it into the gearbox. According to official data from AvtoVAZ, the volume is 3.5 liters including the oil filter. Please note that the specified volume of fluid is added only after the gearbox has been completely flushed of old oil, various dirt deposits, including metal shavings. In the case of the VAZ-2110, this procedure can be performed in a garage. To do this, you will need a special flushing compound, which is introduced into the gearbox after draining the old oil. The fluid is circulated throughout the transmission system when the engine is turned on. Then the flush is drained and new fluid is added. You need to pour oil until it begins to seep out of the filler hole. After making sure that the level is sufficient using a dipstick, close the hole tightly.

Replacement Regulations

Gear oil is a consumable material that has a certain service life. The period of action of the beneficial properties of this liquid depends on operating conditions - climatic factors, road conditions, driving style, as well as the oil itself. The product must have compatible properties and be designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. Thanks to this, even under the influence of negative factors, high-quality oil will last as long as possible, according to official regulations.
