If the bushing is deformed, it must be replaced. In the event that the cardan is loose, as well as in a situation where the hole in the lever axis is worn out, a complete replacement of the link will be required, that is, a repair kit will not be able to solve the problem.

If drops of transmission oil are visible under the car, this often indicates that the seal is leaking. As a rule, problems with the VAZ 2110 rocker seal appear in the form of a crunching noise when switching.

As for replacing the oil seal, the car needs to be driven into a pit or raised on a lift. Next, you should inspect the rubber boot. If it is not sealed or is torn, traces of oil will be visible.

Then you should bend the boot, disconnect the cardan and thus gain access to the cuff. Now the cardan is removed from the lever, after which it is disconnected from the rocker. After removal, you can get to the oil seal and then use an awl or hook to remove the gearbox cuff.

Next, you should press in a new oil seal (in home-made conditions, installation is carried out using a stopper from a plastic bottle). If the oil seal is installed successfully, you can proceed to reassembling the entire mechanism, not forgetting to put the boot in place.

Finally, we note that it is also important to carry out adjustments and settings after repairs.

Replacing the gearbox ball joint race

First, we unscrew the torque rod from the ball joint (in common parlance a butterfly), then the “butterfly” itself from the car body. The exhaust system will interfere a little.
Next, you will need to remove the gear knob: first the cover (by picking it up around the perimeter with a flat-head screwdriver), and then the gear knob itself (by pulling it up from the lever). Unscrew the locking bolt.

From the bottom of the car, remove the “butterfly” along with the gearshift lever. We release the gearshift lever by removing the retaining ring of the hinge cage.

Installation process

Let's analyze the installation of the Priora short-stroke rocker with our own hands step by step.

First you need to pull the knob and cover off the box lever. The knob on the lever is not fixed, so it is enough to apply a certain force to remove it.

Using a key set to “13”, loosen the clamp and separate the gearbox lever rod from the cardan.

To release the lever, we release the ball from the spring mechanism, which is necessary to activate the reverse gear with locking. To do this, remove the locking ring.

It is strictly forbidden to sharply pull the lever upward when trying to release it.

Slowly, carefully remove the retaining ring.

We take out the spring and then the lever with the ball inserted into the plastic frame, as well as the locking ring.

The plastic mandrel includes two parts: the lower one, located on the right and the upper one, located on the left, cylindrical in shape. There is a slit at the top. This component fits onto the gearshift lever. At the bottom there is a lever ball. The upper part wraps around the lower part so that the grooves match.

We take out the lever and rod from the interior. For convenience, you can separate the lever from the rod, although this is not at all necessary.

Using a “10” wrench, unscrew the left bolt on the cardan and pull off the rubber boot.

The driveshaft from the Priora differs in length from the driveshaft of the Viburnum. It is necessary to shorten the stem of the viburnum, depending on its type.

We insert the cardan from the viburnum. Lightly lubricate it with lithol from the inside. When screwing in the bolt, you do not need to tighten it.

We insert the rod through the interior. It is advisable to do this not alone, but to take someone as an assistant. Let one hold the elastic band in the cabin, through which the thrust passes, while the second gradually stretches the thrust.

Next we assemble the lever:

— We put the rod back on the cardan shaft. — We equip the spring mechanism again (we also lubricate the ball with lithol). — We center the lever (we fix it in a comfortable position). — Tighten the clamp on the rod.

After the installation procedure, adjustment of the VAZ backstage is necessary. This is necessary to eliminate possible problems with gear shifting. The adjustment can be done either with the help of an assistant or independently, but the latter option will require considerable patience. To adjust the VAZ 2110 gearbox rocker you will need:

  • standard set of tools;
  • a brush with metal bristles for cleaning joints;
  • cotton gloves;

  1. First of all, try by hook or by crook to engage first gear.
  2. Place the car on an overpass, turn on the handbrake, place additional supports under the wheels to avoid the car moving.
  3. Do not turn off first gear on the transmission.
  4. At the bottom, find the clamp that holds the rocker and secures it. To do this you will have to crawl under the hood. You shouldn't have any problems finding the gearbox. The clamp needs to be loosened.
  5. Now return to the salon. Your task is to move the box lever as far as possible to the left. If you start to pull the handle forward or backward, the drawstring will most likely come off. You don't need it.
  6. Get back under the car and tighten the clamp back.
  7. In many cases, simply shifting the rocker relative to the cardan shaft by literally a few millimeters is enough.

How to make it yourself

  1. first you need to raise the attachment point of the piece of iron, which is located from the gearbox to the lever, which is located inside the cabin;
  2. Next, we disassemble the ball joint (if desired, you can completely dismantle the old link);
  3. next step: free the ball from the plastic claws that secure it. To do this, you need to unclench the metal ring. Next, we disconnect the rod and drag it inside so that it passes through the cover, which is responsible for protecting it from dirt. The clamp located near the gearbox should be loosened in advance. This way you can make your work easier;
  4. at the penultimate stage you need to cut off the excess parts using a grinder. A piece of metal pipe should be welded into the base of the rod, which will have a wall thickness of approximately 3 millimeters. It is necessary to use only identical pieces to ensure that there are no distortions. The rod itself needs to be lengthened by about 2-4 centimeters;
  5. at the last stage, you need to adjust the reverse gear locking mechanism, due to the fact that after adjustment the part may not coincide with the plate on which it is attached. To correct this situation you need to: remove the plate and adjust the hook. On the plate mounting bracket there is a cutout with which the hook occurs. You need to adjust the plastic hook or simply upgrade it using a file or similar means.

After that, you simply put on the cover for the manual transmission, the knob and try the modernized VAZ shifter in action.

Changing the backstage for a VAZ 2110-2112 -2170 (Priora) car is carried out according to the same scheme. In this case, instead of welding, you will need to install a freelance short-throw rocker from another car. It should be noted that the replacement option is a more expensive option in price, since replacing it yourself is more problematic. If you already have experience working with transmissions, then purchasing and replacing parts yourself will cost about 1,000 rubles.

A more reliable way would be to install a rubber or plastic washer. It will take a little longer, but the effect will be more effective. To make a repair, the following is required:

  • soft plastic, you can use a regular glass jar lid;
  • file;
  • scissors;
  • screwdriver;
  • keys for “10” and “13”.

This repair involves removing the casing from the gearshift lever and lifting it up; the lever itself does not need to be removed. Afterwards, you need to unscrew the nut, using the Phillips bit to unscrew the screw. You can use a screwdriver and push it through the side of the tunnel. Then unscrew two more nuts with a “10” wrench. Cut out a washer from plastic. The most important thing remains, you need to insert these washers into the mechanism.

The process itself will not be easy, since the hole is very small. The washers are inserted along the left and right sides of the bushing. It will have to be sharpened; the thickness of the washer is only 1.5 mm. Place oil-resistant rubber rings onto the bushing axle on both sides. The parts need to be slightly compressed. This repair will allow you not to hear the ringing noise for a long time, and the speeds will switch much smoother.

Remember: the tighter the nut on the gear shift knob is tightened, the harder it moves. All these types of manipulations can more likely be attributed to masking defects rather than repairs. The main thing is to find the cause of the vibration. You may have to replace the entire repair kit for the rocker or modify the linkage joint.

To get rid of all this, you need to carry out a simple procedure for adjusting the gearbox rocker, especially since adjusting the rocker will take you no more than half an hour.

The gearbox slide is necessary to prevent random switching of gears due to the simultaneous movement of the sliders. If a high-quality homemade CC or a part from Kalina is installed, then no manipulations with the plastic are necessary. It is also recommended to install sports synchronizers along with the CC, since the load on them increases after such tuning.

The best solution would be to buy parts from Kalina, but some drivers prefer to take KK from a VAZ 2114, that is, a “native” part. In addition to the standard set of tools, you will also need a grinder. Replacement is carried out as follows:

  1. Inside the car, it is necessary to remove the platform, which blocks access to the transmission and gearbox parts. The platform is held in place by 5 bolts;
  2. From the bottom of the car, loosen the clamp that presses the cardan and the rocker; Unscrew the 5 bolts holding the backstage platform
  3. You need to remove the boot from the gearbox hinge and remove the mount;
  4. Further, the installation depends on which rocker was chosen as a replacement - the standard one from the VAZ 2109-2114 or from Kalina. After installing the standard CC and cardan from the Kulisa, the part may not fit into the seat. This can be corrected with the help of an angle grinder;
  5. The size of the cardan is best determined by the standard element. After the adjustment, you need to check whether the short-stroke linkage is hitting the body. If everything is installed correctly, then you need to tighten the clamp;
  6. The next step is to adjust the new part, which is done in reverse speed. It is necessary to switch the gearbox to reverse gear and set the lever to the R gear position. It is best to place the lever closer to the driver's seat. Done, the replacement is complete, now the tuning can be checked on the road. Instructions for making a CC with your own hands

It’s worth making the rocker yourself if you have experience in repairing and upgrading car parts. A high-quality short-stroke rocker will work no worse than the unit from the Lada Kalina. For manufacturing you will need the following elements:

  • RPP from VAZ 2114.
  • Axle and bushings from 2114 (included in the gearbox repair kit).
  • Tube with a diameter of 15 millimeters.
  • Ball nut.
  • Cardan from Lada Kalina.

The first step is to cut off the ball from the RPP, the lower edge of which should be cleaned under the pipe. Next you need to weld a 15mm pipe. A regular nut should be welded to its lower edge, and a ball nut should be welded to it. The cardan from Kalina must be attached to the gearshift lever. Parts such as bushings and axles are simply replaced with new ones from the VAZ 2114 (preferably they should be new).

Is it possible to independently manufacture a short-stroke rocker?

Despite the fact that the cost of a short-stroke stage is not so high, many people prefer to make and install it themselves, which, in general, is not so difficult to do. The work takes time:

  • a piece of pipe with a diameter of exactly 15 mm;
  • the gearshift knob of the car for which the curtain is made;
  • ball nut;
  • conversion of the rocker with an axle and bushing;
  • cardan from the steering mechanism.

The work itself on manufacturing the short-stroke stage takes about two hours. The ball is cut with the gear lever, its lower edge is adjusted so that you can install a tube, which will have to be scalded thoroughly. A nut is welded to the lower edge of the pipe and a ball is installed. After this, the cardan can be installed on the gear shift lever.

The whole process may seem a little complicated to some, but if it is carried out under the “supervision” of an experienced mechanic/mechanic, the success of the endeavor is guaranteed. It is possible to turn a standard car scene into a short-term one without having to disassemble it. To do this, you need to lift the fastenings of the “piece of iron” running away from the gearbox all the way to the gearshift lever. This does not mean that this procedure will make the gearbox truly sporty, but the play of the lever will decrease slightly.

  1. Turn on first speed.

  3. Turn the rocker drive counterclockwise until the gearshift lever begins to rest against the plastic reverse speed stop.
  4. Tighten the clamp and check how everything works.

Method No. 3 - adjusting the scenes in neutral.

If you do not have a plastic stopper, the adjustment is made in neutral gear.

To adjust the neutral position of the gearshift lever, you need to accurately calculate the depth of the shift of your gearbox to the driveshaft of the VAZ 2110. Sometimes such manipulations result in the appearance of annoying rattling of the lever.

If adjusting the rocker does not lead to anything and there is still a problem with switching, replace the rocker completely or ask for help from specialists.

It would seem that such an element as the backstage cannot be modified or modernized, because everything here is extremely simple. However, tuning is also possible here, we’ll talk about this in this article, and as an example we will have a VAZ-2110 car. Many car owners prefer to change the standard rocker because it has too long a stroke; instead, they install a short-stroke one. This is good because the clarity of switching improves and less time is spent on it, but at the same time, car enthusiasts for some reason forget that the rocker needs adjustment.

If there is no adjustment, the driver will soon feel difficulty changing gears. It is recommended to do the work together with an assistant, although, if desired, you can do everything alone.

In this case, the owner of the “ten” replaced the rocker, did not adjust it, and had problems when shifting from reverse to fifth gear. The adjustment can be done in different ways; we will consider several options with you.

1. In the first case, the adjustment is made in reverse gear. We switch the box to reverse mode, then climb under the car and tighten the clamp. 3. Remove the gear lever trim.

4. After fixing the gearshift knob and the gear selection rod, fix the adjusting bolt.

Why does the gearshift lever rattle on Kalina?

The main reason for this problem lies in the very design of the attachment of the lever to the rod. To put it mildly, it is not perfect, but it can be corrected at minimal cost and in just a few minutes of time.

So, first you need to lift up the lever casing, and then unscrew the fastening nut, which is already shown in the photo below almost completed:

When the bolt is removed, we also remove all the washers and the metal sleeve. And this whole damn thing looks like this in parts:

So, the reason for the rattling is that when connecting this entire structure, a small gap appears between the parts, which is the source of strong vibration.

To achieve a smaller gap, it is necessary to slightly grind off the metal bushing, which prevents these washers from being compressed more tightly. I would like to warn you that you need to grind very carefully and very little, literally 1 mm. If you overdo it, then the lever will move with very great effort.

As a result, after connecting the bushing with washers into a single structure, as was shown first, we get a picture when this gap has decreased:

I messed up a little and sanded a little more than necessary (which I warned about above). As a result, when the fastening nut is tightly tightened, the lever moves tightly when switching. But I loosened this nut a little, literally half a turn - it shouldn’t come off!

When everything was done, I started the car and gave good speed, and there were no sounds from the lever. But to be sure, I decided to take a ride. I accelerated to about 70 km/h in third gear and left the gas pedal. Previously, in this situation, the rattling was simply terrible, and the only salvation from this was a hand on the lever! Now there is not a single hint of extraneous sounds or vibration.

Anyone who has not yet eliminated a similar defect on their Kalina can use this advice, just grind the bushing minimally. It’s better to improve it a second time than to screw it up the first time!

Many owners of the Lada Kalina very often have the following problem: when accelerating, as well as when braking the engine, the gear lever begins to rattle. A similar problem arose with my Kalina after about 15,000 km of operation.

This increases comfort when operating the car, and also slightly increases the service life of the gearbox, since clearer engagements mean coordinated operation of all mechanisms.

To replace the rocker, it is not necessary to remove the entire mechanism. The main task is to disassemble the ball joint from the outside (unclench the steel ring of the support, spread the plastic legs and remove the ball). Then you should disconnect the rod from the support, and then use welding to weld a piece of pipe and a piece of sheet metal to the rod.

You will also need to lift up the hinge with the hook. This will avoid failures and unclear gear shifts. If everything is done correctly, the short-throw rocker will require more effort when engaged, but the smoothness and clarity of gear engagement will be noticeably improved.

As you can see, if problems arise with shifting gears, replacing the rocker on a VAZ 2110 is a last resort. In fact, problems can often be resolved by setting up and adjusting the rocker, as well as overhauling the mechanism and replacing individual worn parts (you need a VAZ 2110 rocker repair kit).

Before starting disassembly, it is important to make sure that the gears are difficult to engage precisely because of malfunctions of the backstage. The fact is that malfunctions of the clutch or the gearbox itself can also have similar symptoms
