Timely control of the level and change of lubricant in a VAZ 2022 car extends the service life of all internal components and units of the unit. When purchasing a car, owners need to familiarize themselves with how often the oil in the VAZ 2107 gearbox is changed and how to carry out this process themselves.

Frequency of lubricant replacement
According to official regulations, changing the gearbox oil on a car with a carburetor or injection engine should be carried out every 60 thousand kilometers or once every three years. It all depends on what happens faster. There are other nuances that affect the frequency of changing the lubricant, for example, the characteristics of the oil used. If the owner fills the gearbox of his car with low-quality fluid or motor oil instead of transmission oil, then the frequency of its replacement will be significantly lower. In this case, the structural elements of the gearbox may be destroyed from the inside.
Technical regulations on the amount of transmission substance
Transmission fluid is monitored every 10 thousand km, i.e. during the next maintenance. Before checking the amount of substance, you need to let the car sit for a while. During this period, the transmission fluid will have time to flow down the walls of the box. If the fluid level reaches the edge of the lower edge of the filler hole, then its volume is quite sufficient, and the oil is not replaced or topped up.
How much transmission oil will be needed when completely replacing it directly depends on the type of gearbox. According to the technical instructions, the following volume of liquid is established:
- for 4-mortar – 1.35 l;
- for a 5-mortar – 1.6 l.
Experienced drivers advise filling the 5-mortar with lubricant slightly above the set level - “as much as it will fit.” To do this, lift the car from the driver's door with a jack. Then add 250–300 g of liquid. This will ensure reliable lubrication of the 5th gear gear. There is no need to be especially afraid of increased pressure on the seals, since excess pressure is released through the breather.
What oil is better to use?
Now let’s look at what kind of lubricant should be poured into the 5-speed transmission of VAZ 2107 cars. In classic cars, the manufacturer recommends using a fluid that meets the GL-4 or GL-5 standards. In this case, the viscosity classification of substances poured into the box should be 75W-90, 75W-85 or 80W-85. Most car owners use oils that meet the GL-4 standard. Such fluids are intended for vehicles with stepped transmissions operating at high speeds and low torque. Also, the use of oils is allowed at low speeds with high torque.
GL-4 class transmission fluids contain a high content of additives designed to improve the technical characteristics of the fluid.
Car owners often add such oils for the winter to ensure good viscosity in cold weather. One of the optimal fluid options is Shell Spirax S5 ATE 75W-90 lubricant.
User Lesha Master in his video showed how the procedure for replacing transmission fluid is performed on classic VAZ cars.
About types of transmission oils
Modern industry offers a wide range of different fluids, and the quality of the gearbox depends on the correct choice. At the moment, there are three types of oils: synthetic, semi-synthetic and mineral water . Each of these mixtures has its own set of characteristics and properties.
Mineral transmission is the most budget option. This oil has good lubricating properties, but has a significant drawback. In extreme cold conditions it freezes very quickly .
Unlike mineral water, synthetics and semi-synthetics have a higher price. In addition, such oils thicken less at low temperatures and are excellent for use in severe frosts. Synthetic and semi-synthetic oils also differ from each other. The consistency of semi-synthetic liquid is thicker than synthetics. It is great for cars with high mileage. Synthetic oil is better used for new gearboxes, as it is thinner and can leak if there are even the smallest defects in the seals.
When choosing products, first of all, you need to pay attention to viscosity. SAE index indicates .
SAE standards, transmission fluids are divided into the following categories:
- Summer oil (marking consists of numbers only).
- Winter mixture (in its designation it has the English letter W - winter ).
- All-season liquid. The marking of such a lubricant consists of two numbers, which are separated by the letter W. This oil can be used all year round.
Synthetic and semi-synthetic oils that have the following viscosity classes are suitable for the gearbox:
- SAE80W85 is an all-season liquid with a temperature range from -35 °C to +35 °C.
- SAE75W90 is a mixture used at any time of the year with a recommended temperature range from -40 °C to +35 °C.
- SAE75W85 is a multi-season oil, designed for work within the range of -40 °C...+45 °C.
In addition, when choosing transmission fluid, you can come across the API . It implies the systematization of lubricants according to their quality, application and performance characteristics. There are 7 groups in total, but only two are the most popular.
the VAZ 2107 gearbox, the manufacturer recommends the following groups of transmission fluids:
- GL-4. This oil is characterized by the presence of a large number of additives. It is used for gearboxes that operate in high gears at low torques and in low gears at high torques.
- GL-5. This fluid was developed for hypoid gears with high axle displacement. It has proven itself well when working in harsh conditions.
Level control and required volume
Experts recommend monitoring the transmission fluid level in the gearbox at least every 10 thousand kilometers.
As for how many liters are poured into the gearbox, the volume of the device depends on the number of stages:
- the volume of five-speed units is 1.6 liters;
- Four-speed gearboxes need 1.35 liters.
If you need to add lubricant, you should first check its level in the system. This should be done after the engine and gearbox of the car have cooled down, so that all the oil has time to drain from the inner walls of the transmission.
The stages of work will be as follows:
- The vehicle is driven into a pit or overpass.
- Using a rag or wire brush, clean the drain and filler caps from dirt. You also need to clean the surface of the crankcase around the plugs.
- Using a 17mm wrench, unscrew the filler cap located on the unit body.
- There is no dipstick for checking the level in the VAZ 2107 gearbox. Therefore, a screwdriver can be used to measure the amount of lubricant in the transmission system. If the oil volume is normal, then the fluid level should be at the lower edge of the filler hole.
- If the diagnostics showed that the amount of lubricant is less than required, then the liquid should be topped up and the cap should be screwed on tightly. If the oil level is critically low, you need to diagnose the condition of the gearbox shaft seals. If there are drops of transmission fluid on the gearbox housing, it is necessary to check the integrity of the unit. Check the quality of fixation of the transmission housing covers, tighten the nuts if necessary. If the seals or gaskets on the gearbox are worn out, they need to be replaced.
User Sergey Redko in his video talked about how much oil can go into the transmission of a VAZ 2107 car.
Checking the oil level
Every few months, before or after long trips, it is recommended to check the gearbox oil level. To check the level, you need to use an inspection hole or a lift. Using a seventeen wrench, unscrew the drain plug. Using a screwdriver or other object, we check the controlled volume of lubricant. It should reach the bottom edge. If the level is low, the required amount is added with a syringe. If there is a strong drop, it is important to check the gearbox shaft seals. Oil sweating is allowed. The appearance of drops on the box housing indicates damage to the gaskets or loosening of the fastening nuts.
We change it with our own hands
You can change the transmission oil in the 5th or 4th gearbox of a VAZ 2107 car with a carburetor or injector engine with the help of specialists or yourself. Below we will look at how to change and fill in new grease with your own hands.
Preparation
To replace the lubricant, you must prepare the following:
- a special syringe with a tube for pouring oil into the unit;
- a cut-off bottle or other container with a volume of up to two liters into which the waste liquid will be drained;
- wrench 17;
- hexagon 12;
- fresh oil to fill the system;
- rag.
User Alexey Romanov made a video in which he demonstrated in detail the process of replacing transmission fluid in the domestic “Seven”.
Stages of work
Change the lubricant as follows:
- The change procedure is performed on a warm car. This will allow the hot transmission fluid with all wear products to exit the unit faster. But be careful, because on a warm vehicle the fluid temperature can reach 90 degrees.
- Using a wrench, unscrew the oil filler cap on the transmission unit.
- Before changing the lubricant, the used substance must be drained. To do this, find a drain hole and place a container under it into which the waste will flow. Using a hex wrench, remove the plug.
- After this, the procedure for draining the old fluid will begin. Wait about twenty minutes, during which time the lubricant should leave the system.
- Then clean the drain plug and replace it.
- If, after draining the waste oil, it is noticed that the old oil is dark, almost black, and has signs of wear in the form of metal shavings, we recommend flushing the unit. Since some deposits may remain in it, which will mix with fresh lubricant. For flushing, you will need about one liter of new oil and the same amount of kerosene. Pour the mixture into the unit and screw on the oil filler cap. After this, turn on neutral speed and start the power unit of the car. Let the engine idle for about five minutes, then turn it off. Repeat the draining procedure and screw the hole cap back into place. If there are deposits left in the drained fluid, the flushing process can be repeated.
- Now open the filler plug and add new lubricant to it using a syringe with a tube connected. Fill the gearbox with enough oil so that the level is at the lower edge of the oil filler hole. Then the plug needs to be screwed into place.
- Start the engine and let it run. You can perform a check ride. After this, diagnose the gearbox under the car for leaks. If there are oil leaks, it is necessary to determine the cause and eliminate it.
1. Find the drain plug and drain the old grease
2. Fill the unit with fresh oil using a syringe, monitoring its level
The process of changing the oil in a VAZ 2107 gearbox
After choosing the oil, you can proceed directly to changing it. So, for the process of changing the lubricant itself you will need:
- New gear oil, selected taking into account all recommendations.
- 12 mm hex key.
- 17mm wrench.
- Container for draining used lubricant. Alternatively, you can use a plastic bottle, cutting off the top.
- ·Dry cloth.
- Brush with metal bristles.
- Special grease syringe (grease gun). If you don't have a grease gun on hand, you can use a funnel with a long flexible tube attached to it.
Consequences of untimely replacement
What can result from an untimely oil change in the VAZ 2107 gearbox:
- The box will be louder. Extraneous noise will appear, uncharacteristic of the gearbox. This may happen when the engine is cold, but as the engine warms up the sounds will disappear. Or the transmission may be noisy regardless of the temperature of the power unit.
- When changing gears, a crunching sound or other extraneous sounds may occur. Failure to change the oil in a timely manner will result in it losing its properties and being unable to properly lubricate the internal parts of the gearbox. Replacing the substance often solves the problem of crunching.
- Faulty gearbox bearings. If the lubrication is poor, bearing mechanisms will operate under high load conditions. This will cause the parts to wear out faster and soon fail. Wear products from bearings and other elements can clog the oil channels, which will affect the increase in pressure in the lines of the transmission system. As a result, the lubricant will begin to squeeze out the oil seals and seals. This problem can lead to a transmission fluid leak.
- The appearance of vibrations during operation of the gearbox. Often the vibrations disappear as the engine warms up, but it is possible that they remain and do not disappear. It is not a fact that the problem is related specifically to the quality of the motor fluid. Perhaps this is a consequence of the use of used oil, which has lost its properties, which led to wear and failure of some structural elements of the unit.
- One of the most serious consequences is gearbox failure. If the car is constantly used with used oil, this can lead to breakdown of the unit. The gearbox will need to be repaired.
Equipment and tools
What equipment will you need to change the oil:
- A container for draining used oil - for example, an old bucket or basin.
- 12mm hex wrench.
- Socket wrench 17 or socket 17.
- Protective rubber gloves to avoid getting burned.
- Oil filter puller - it’s not always possible to unscrew it by hand.
- Syringe for filling oil.
- Watering can for pouring oil.
That, in fact, is all that is required.

How to change: main stages of the process
Successful replacement of the transmission fluid in the gearbox occurs after a trip of more than 5 km. This is necessary for the liquid to warm up. Change the transmission oil by immovably fixing the car on an overpass or inspection hole.
Operations are performed according to the following instructions:
- use a 17 key to unscrew the filler hole plug;
- Use a 12mm hex to unscrew the drain plug;
- drain the waste liquid (remember safety precautions - the substance may be hot);
- clean plugs and holes from contamination;
- tighten the drain plug;
- using an oil pump or its equivalent, you need to fill in the required volume of new fluid (as a rule, pour until the lubricant begins to pour out of the filler hole);
- tighten the plug that closes the filler hole.
Since the same oil must be poured into the gearbox and rear axle gearbox, it is better to change it in these units at the same time. 3 liters will be enough (1.3 liters fits in the gearbox).
