And at the same time, Niva ran wonderfully over potholes, because... There are no roads, and I didn’t ask for money for repairs at all. I drove 54,000 km on it. both city and highway.

The car still has the classic design of the late 70s. True, it is worth paying attention to the finishing of the off-road vehicle, which has become better able to protect the body from sand, dirt and stones. As a result, the owner of an SUV no longer has to worry that, having driven along a dirt road, the car will have to be painted to prevent chips, etc.

A “long” four-door Urban came to us for testing. We tested it both in Moscow, so to speak, not in its on-road environment, and off-road. And now you can really be more confident off-road than on the old Niva. Especially when you drive 50 km from Moscow, where stones and holes on the roads are a common occurrence. On such roads, you will think about how to preserve the paintwork of your expensive crossover. Having bought a Niva, you will be the king of our “beautiful” Russian roads.

Yes, if you buy an Urban 4x4 you will have to endure a loud and low-power 1.7 liter four-cylinder petrol engine. You will also miss various electronic safety systems, from the ESP system to other braking assistance systems. But you shouldn’t demand any modern technologies from Urban. This car was created not to let you down on harsh Russian roads, and not for comfort. So, don’t expect any kind of safety, efficiency or dynamics from the new Niva. Despite the update, it is still the same old classic Niva with the same shortcomings and appearance.

True, with the advent of power steering, driving an SUV has become much easier. Especially in urban environments. Also, do not forget that the new Niva costs four to five times less than the same size Suzuki Jimny. It is precisely because of the machine’s capabilities and price/quality ratio that this model is still popular not only in Russia, but also in the West. The Niva is even featured in Hollywood films as an example of a Russian all-terrain vehicle.

The new Niva is capable of driving through obstacles 65 centimeters high. This is impressive. But, of course, there are problem areas. For example, a low-hanging generator that can fail if it becomes clogged with dirt. Yes, car shops sell special kits to move the generator a little higher, but this is the choice of those whose arms grow from their shoulders, and not a certain place below.

Unfortunately, the Urban 4x4 does not have a very large trunk, with a volume of only 183 liters. But it doesn't matter. If your cargo does not fit in the trunk, it can be placed on the roof, which can withstand up to 75 kilograms of load.

This car will not annoy local residents in remote areas from Moscow. So, going 150 km from Moscow, you will not attract any attention to yourself and envy of the “snickering Muscovites”. Believe me, having driven alone in the same Land Cruiser Prado or 200 model from Moscow even 500 km, somewhere in remote places you will feel out of place fearing for the safety of your property.

It is worth noting that the Urban's handling on asphalt leaves much to be desired. So you need to be careful and attentive while driving this car. So for those who are accustomed to various assistance systems, security, etc. It is worth remembering that there is a direct connection with the car and show your real driving skills.

But, due to the low power, fuel consumption will not be prohibitively high. In the combined cycle, during testing of the car, consumption averaged 9.5-10 liters per 100 kilometers.

During the test, we identified another drawback in the Urban - these are screw-in towing eyes, which replaced the standard ones welded into the side member. The lugs are screwed into such thin metal of the front end that when towing they are simply torn out. And this is very unpleasant when towing on the highway.

We continue the test drive of the Lada 4x4: there have been no major changes in the interior. The plastic is ordinary, relatively soft, and the panel is quite thin. Standard shelves are classic, a standard “glove compartment”, the closure of which is well adjusted.

The main changes are the central tunnel has been slightly redesigned. The Niva 4x4 now has cup holders and an ashtray. They are made in the style of modern cars. Electrically adjustable side mirrors - left and right, they are heated, front windows, air conditioning, heated front seats. It is inconvenient to turn on the air conditioner in one place and adjust it in another.

The Lada Urban has uncomfortable rear seats and very little space. The seats are a good shape, but not really very comfortable. The front seats simply recline forward.

The trunk is opened with a handle on the “blind” rear door (three doors, two front and rear, the second rear door does not open). The door closes quite quietly.

The trunk is roomy. There are about 300 liters here, the shelf can be easily removed. The rear seat backs also fold down quite easily. Then you get almost a cubic meter of trunk space. But before you fold down the seats, you have to move the seat belt forward.

The climate control unit is strange and does not work well. Even with the air conditioning on, the glass fogs up slightly. The control unit for mirrors and power windows is in the “blind spot”, between the seats.

ADVANTAGES OF LADA 4X4 URBAN

Initial reviews of the Lada Urban were cautious and even skeptical - car enthusiasts suspected that all the differences boiled down mainly to plastic bumpers instead of metal ones. Which, moreover, are not very practical, as they are damaged more quickly when driving off-road.

But the new Lada Urban 4×4, firstly, was created, as the word Urban suggests, specifically for the city. Secondly, it is optionally possible to install protection on the bumper if you need to use the car outside the city or simply where the smooth asphalt ends. Thirdly, reviews about the Lada Urban from users began to appear, indicating that the changes in the “good old Niva” affected not only the appearance, that the price of the Lada Urban 4×4 does not only consist of added plastic bumpers.

In the suspension, the front “knuckles” were changed, into which bearings were installed like on front-wheel drive cars, that is, double-row ones. The Niva 4x4 hubs themselves, the outer joint housing and the brake discs have undergone changes and modifications. The upper and lower “fingers” were modified, the front stabilizer mounts and the design of its cushions were changed. This made it possible to eliminate the process of squeezing the pillows out of the holders. The springs were replaced with others and gas-filled shock absorbers were installed. Changes have been made to the design of the front axle. Now he is already independent.

Under the hood everything remains the same. The Niva 4x4 has an injector and a full-size spare wheel. Moreover, it is precisely due to this wheel that the body receives greater rigidity in emergency situations. Due to it, there are practically no crumpled zones in the car. There is also ABS.

1.7 liter engine with 83 horsepower. Fuel consumption in the city is from 10 to 15 liters, depending on driving style, off-road in low gears - from 16 to 20. The engine is small in volume, but voracious. In a combined cycle (50% city and 50% highway) the consumption will be 7-8 liters.

The engine became fuel-injected, but its power remained almost at the same level. That's still 83 horsepower. The engine operates in the upper and middle speed ranges.

A test drive of the Niva Urban showed that it is very unsuitable for off-road use.

A well-known technique is second downshift and “gas to the floor.” The motor is prone to overheating, so you need to carefully monitor the temperature when driving.

The noise protection is strange. The only place where it is is on the inside of the hood. It is not on the engine panel or anywhere else. It is difficult to judge how effective it is - there is already a lot of noise in the car. The only difference between the door handles and the first models is the black paint coating.
