VAZ-2114 is a very common car in Russia. This car is loved for its maintainability and low maintenance. The car will not require a lot of money if it breaks down. But, unfortunately, sooner or later the VAZ-2114 engine “check” will light up on the instrument panel. Don’t be upset or panic – most of the reasons can be eliminated with your own hands. In today’s article we will look at why the “check” light on the VAZ-2114 is on, as well as how to solve this problem. This information will be very useful.
Electronic control unit
The Lada-2114 device has an electronic control unit. This mechanism directly affects how the VAZ-2114 engine operates. The “check” may light up periodically. This is due to a software problem. Also, the light comes on due to the accumulation of various errors during operation.
So, the “check” light on the VAZ-2114 is on, and the engine is working properly. How can this problem be solved? The simplest solution is to reset errors by connecting the scanner to the diagnostic connector. But if this action did not help, and the “check” is still on on the VAZ-2114, you need to change the software to a newer one. From the factory, the ECU is equipped with the “January” firmware. Now there are many versions of it, including custom ones. To use the new firmware, you need a K-line cable and a tablet or laptop. But you need to be able to download the software correctly.
The “CHECK ENGINE” light comes on. VAZ 2114
- Maybe Mickey Mouse chewed the wiring a little or the chips oxidized. take off the chips and spray with VD. and leave a piece of bread in the glove compartment for Mickey Mouse)))))))) just don’t close the glove compartment))))))))
- “resetting errors” is not a cure! First of all, check the “logical masses” on the engine, and they are located in the place on the engine where the distributor was located on the carburetor. The control unit is a fairly reliable thing, even when filled with antifreeze, which constantly happens on Kalina, after washing and drying it works as if nothing had happened, but it doesn’t like “snotty” food. Think about it, can everything fail at once? Contact a qualified electrician. Of course, the block may malfunction, but this is extremely rare
- Maybe not on topic... but the Check light came on, I became wary, and when ignited it lights up, goes out and after a couple of minutes it lights up, both at idle and when driving... But what killed me the most was that after 2 hours the brake hose on the left front burst! this is not interconnected in any way, but I was lucky that I was walking no more than 80, listening to the engine, at the crossing I started trampling the floor)) The day before it was a birthday, it was raining, we drank well, I don’t remember how we got there and where we stopped?! at once, suspiciously.... betrayal does not recede))
Before this, my speedometer dropped to 0 at speed, and then rose... maybe the speed sensor was flooded, it’s at the bottom of the box, because of this sensor, the check might be on??
Z.Y. There is no BC and no finances to purchase it, although I plan to soon
- Today I changed the heater on my VAZ 2115 and picked up the pump from the service center. The check light came on and the speakers began to make a terrible noise when I turned off the ignition key. I remove the radio panel and there is no noise and there is some kind of crap with the signaling system. I have a Jaguar autostart, tell me what could be the reason, maybe the wiring is messed up.
Spark plugs, BB wires, coil
If a VAZ-2114 car stalls, the “check” is on, or the engine “troubles” at idle, you need to pay attention to the ignition system. The main elements are spark plugs and high-voltage wires. Often on domestic cars there is a breakdown of spark plugs or wires. It is necessary to check these elements for serviceability and replace if necessary. The best way to check is to install a pre-made set of spark plugs or wires.
This way we can narrow down our search. If even one spark plug is faulty, it is better to replace the entire set. Otherwise, there is a high probability that the breakdown will happen again, only on a different cylinder. It is also recommended to check the spark plug gap between the central and side electrodes. Over time, this gap increases. The normal value should not exceed 1.3 millimeters. If the gap is larger, it can be corrected by bending the side electrode closer to the central one. If the distance between the electrodes is too large, a spark is difficult to form. Part of the fuel mixture will simply go into the air. Typically, the service life of spark plugs is 20 thousand kilometers. Some people install iridium ones because they last longer. But as motorists say, there is no point in overpaying. The characteristics of the internal combustion engine will remain the same, and the cost of such spark plugs is equivalent to three or four sets of regular ones, which are no worse.
Less often on a VAZ, the ignition coil itself fails. At the same time, the “check engine” lamp lights up on the instrument panel. The engine may stall, start poorly, or stall. The coil cannot be repaired and must be replaced completely with a new one. As for the wires, you can check them by measuring the resistance.
Cylinder failure
If the engine operates stable or unstable, it is recommended to check the cylinder. Its malfunction is associated with breakdown of the spark plugs, oxygen sensor and ECU. The cylinder can fail instantly or gradually. In the first case, the VAZ engine suffers, fuel consumption increases, engine power decreases, and vibration increases.
If the vehicle is not repaired in a timely manner, the engine may fail. This is explained by the fact that gasoline is constantly supplied to the broken cylinder, which is mixed with oil and goes into the crankcase. With a long process, the latter substance liquefies, losing its properties. The parts of the power unit begin to work in emergency mode, wearing out and forming chips.
If the check is flashing and the VAZ engine is shaking, then you must follow the following recommendations:
- start the power unit;
- open the hood lid;
- remove the wires from the spark plugs one by one.
The next step is to inspect the spark plugs for condition and performance. To do this, you will need to unscrew the spark plugs with a special key. If there is smoke on the head, and the electrode is clean and intact, then the motor tripping is due to dust getting into the cylinder. In this case, it is recommended to check the air supply system through the filter.
If the burn is on the entire head, and the electrode is completely burnt out, then detonation combustion has occurred and the ignition system has been emptied. If the head is covered with smoke, but the electrode is intact, then the mixture enters the ignition system late. By assessing the condition of the spark plugs, it is possible to determine the exact cause of the failure of the cylinder. To check the performance of spark plugs, it is recommended to use the “spark” method. If it breaks through, then the check continues. If there is no spark, then the spark plugs are replaced with new analogues. A good spark requires starting the VAZ and tracking the dynamics of changes.

Pump
We are not talking about water, but about fuel. If it malfunctions, the car may behave strangely, and a “check” will also light up on the panel. Usually the cause is low blood pressure. The filter may be clogged. Both need to be examined. This is a coarse and fine filter. The first is a mesh near the pump, and the second is located separately from it and has its own housing.
It also happens that the pump itself burns out. This is especially true on cars with HBO. Some owners do not turn off the gas pump when switching to gas and, in addition, drive with an almost “dry” gas tank.
The engine stalls, the check light flashes or lights up: the main reasons
Let's start with the fact that injection engines are equipped with special catalyst devices for cleaning the exhaust. At the same time, the catalytic converter is a rather vulnerable and at the same time expensive element, and all sorts of malfunctions in the engine create a risk of damage.
As a rule, the check flashes when there is a risk of damage to the catalyst. In this case, the simultaneous tripping of the engine means that one or more cylinders are not working or are not working correctly. In practice, this means that the fuel in the problem cylinder does not burn completely, after which it enters the exhaust system.
As a result, the remaining unburnt fuel burns out in the area where the catalyst is located, since the temperatures there are very high. Fuel also gets on the catalyst itself, causing it to fail.
It should be added that the check also often lights up in the event of failure of any ECM sensors. One way or another, it is quite obvious that the “check” in the vast majority of cases indicates either problems with the electronic engine control system itself, or the risk of damage to the catalyst due to malfunctions of the internal combustion engine.
It is important to understand that the engine tripping indicates a non-functioning cylinder. In this case, the check is flashing not due to the failure of any ECM sensor, malfunction of the exhaust gas recirculation system or poor fuel in the tank, but rather signals to the driver about a direct threat to the catalyst
In a nutshell, fuel that is not burned and gets into the outlet causes a special sensor (lambda probe, oxygen sensor) to send readings to the ECU indicating deviations from the norm. The control unit begins to try to correct the situation, but taking into account the tripping, it is simply not able to adjust the operation of the motor so that everything returns to normal. As a result, fuel consumption increases, while the engine operates unstably, idle speed fluctuates, etc. In some cases, the motor “falls” into emergency mode.
This feature of engine operation is primarily aimed at preventing burnout or melting of the catalyst. The catalyst itself consists of small honeycomb cells. If unburned fuel intensively enters the exhaust and burns out in the catalyst, the element will simply melt.
This melting will lead to the fact that exhaust gases will not be able to pass normally through the catalyst, that is, a plug appears in the exhaust pipe. Naturally, the engine will “suffocate”, power will drop, the engine may not start at all, etc.
Also, the catalyst will no longer be able to clean the exhaust, and toxicity will increase. There is only one way out in this situation - repairing the engine to eliminate the main cause of the engine tripping, and only then replacing the expensive catalyst with a new one. To minimize risks, a special program is programmed into the ECU, which involves operating the engine in emergency mode.
Oxygen sensor
This is one of the most common reasons why the “check” light is on on the VAZ-2114. All Ladas of this model leave the factory with a catalyst. As a result, an oxygen sensor is needed for its proper operation. The ECU uses it to determine which ignition timing to set next, as well as the composition of the mixture.
If the sensor stops providing information or sends incorrect data, the ECU will take average values as a basis, and a “check” will light up on the instrument panel. What is the solution to this problem? Many people simply place a fake one. The best option is to install a mechanical blende. It screws into the standard hole and simulates the operation of a lambda probe. The ECU constantly receives the same, normal lambda value. Such a sensor will no longer be able to break, since it has a special coating.
conclusions
It is quite simple to determine the reasons for the appearance of the “Check Engine” icon on the dashboard of the VAZ-2114, because the main problems are: the computer, the fuel system and bad gasoline.
Dashboard without receipt
If the motorist is unable to identify and fix the problem on his own, it is recommended to contact a car service center. Of course, you will need to spend a certain amount of money, but auto repairmen will do everything quickly and efficiently. It is worth warning that any diagnosis of this malfunction begins with checking the ECU, and if the car enthusiast does not understand this process, it is worth contacting professionals so as not to disrupt anything in the operation of the car.
Catalyst
If the car's mileage is less than 100 thousand kilometers, most likely it still has a catalyst. By this time, it may already become clogged and not perform its direct function. Inside the catalyst there are small honeycombs on which carbon deposits accumulate over time. As a result, the gases cannot leave the combustion chamber normally, and the engine “suffocates.”
What is the solution to this problem? It's simple: instead of a standard catalyst, a flame arrester or just a straight pipe is installed. Another, most cost-effective solution is to remove the ceramic core of the catalyst mechanically. Access is provided after opening the case with a grinder, after which the hole is welded. This will not harm the engine. The maximum that will change is the smell of exhaust gases and their toxicity. But since we do not yet control any environmental standards, owners of used VAZs and foreign cars are completely getting rid of catalysts. The cost of a new element is more than 20 thousand rubles, and they are almost out of stock.
Why is a warning system needed?
A panel that flashes periodically or is constantly on, which depicts an engine outline, or has the inscription “Check Engine” can be translated as “check the engine.” Its appearance warns the driver about emerging problems in the power unit. Most of all, its appearance worries novice drivers, but there is no need to be afraid, you just need to diagnose the engine and then eliminate the identified faults. The first such blocks were connected to an on-board computer; its main purpose was to control the carburetor of the power unit.
Cars are constantly improving, and so are electronic control units. Now they control other systems, such as ignition, supply, formation of a combustible mixture, engine speed, and other parameters. As a result of this modernization, the reasons for the control unit to react have become many times greater, so it has become much more difficult to understand the reasons for the appearance of warning signals, and sometimes it is completely impossible to do without special equipment
According to the regulations, spark plugs need to be changed every 15-20 thousand kilometers. Many new products can last longer, but here you should take into account the fact that the car is operated carefully and is always refueled with high-quality gasoline, which is not always possible. Therefore, it is worth doing everything in advance.
Another very important point is the type of candles. As a rule, the car's operating books indicate all the necessary parameters, including the spark plugs that should be used for a given engine. Many drivers neglect these regulations and become frustrated in the future. For injection engines, special spark plugs are produced, the parameters of which must correspond specifically to your car. Try to keep an eye on this when purchasing new ones.
The second ignition element is a module that replaced the distributor. It eliminates the need to adjust the lead angle, as was done before. However, the module can also cause certain malfunctions. An electronic malfunction leads to a violation of the desired angle, which leads to various consequences:
- Increased fuel consumption
- Dips when pressing the gas pedal
- Popping sounds in the exhaust system
- Deterioration in dynamics
- Long engine start
These were the most common reasons why the check for a VAZ 2114-2115 might light up. We wish you good luck on the roads!
Mass fuel flow sensor (MAF)
This element is available in any injection VAZ. It is a plastic element, inside of which there is a thin platinum thread. When the driver turns on the ignition, voltage is applied to this thread, which increases the temperature due to high resistance. When the engine starts, the air that enters the pipe cools this thread. As a result, resistance and voltage change. This information is read by the controller. This is how the control unit “finds out” how much air has passed through the mass air flow sensor.
If the sensor is faulty, the ECU puts it into emergency mode. At the same time, a “check” lights up on the panel. Indirect signs of a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor are:
- Unstable engine operation at idle.
- Long-term start of the internal combustion engine.
- Poor acceleration dynamics.
- High fuel consumption.
What to do if the VAZ-2114 is not? The sensor cannot be repaired and must be replaced entirely.

If the car is equipped with HBO
Some owners install gas equipment on their VAZ. If a fourth generation system is installed, it will definitely interact with the engine electronic unit. If the pressure in the gas line drops or the gearbox malfunctions, a yellow lamp may light up on the panel. It is recommended to carry out further diagnostics at a specialized service station.
We also note that cars with gas equipment have their own “check”, a gas filter. Sometimes they forget to change it. The recommended replacement interval is 30 thousand kilometers. In many ways, the condition of this filter depends on the quality of the gas being charged.
Why does the check light up? The most common and common malfunctions
So, we figured out the general scheme. Now let's look at what problems lead to the check light coming on and the engine stalling. Often a p0300 error occurs, which indicates that a misfire (misfire) is occurring. There are several reasons for these omissions, and to determine them it is necessary to carry out a step-by-step diagnosis, taking into account certain individual symptoms.
You should start by checking the ignition system. The most common cause of tripping is the failure of spark plugs and armored wires. Candles can wear out their service life, break down, or become heavily contaminated. Armored wires suffer from insulation damage and breakdowns. One way or another, the result is either no spark at all, or there is a spark, but it’s weak.
If everything is in order with the spark plugs and wires, you should pay attention to the ignition module or ignition coils, which may be shorting. In this case, it is better to entrust the check to experienced specialists, since unprofessional actions lead to the fact that you can burn the switch or damage other important elements. Having dealt with the ignition system, you need to check the power system
As a rule, incorrect operation of injection nozzles or malfunctions in their operation lead to combustion of the internal combustion engine. At the same time, the check will light up or flash
Having dealt with the ignition system, it is necessary to check the power system. As a rule, incorrect operation of injection nozzles or malfunctions in their operation lead to engine tripping. At the same time, the check will light up or flash.
The best option would be to check the injectors on a special stand. Such diagnostics allows you to determine the need to clean, repair or replace injectors. At the same time, specialists check the power supply to the injectors, the condition of the injector O-rings, etc.
As for compression, a burnt-out valve often leads to an unexpected decrease in the indicator. If the valve burns out, the engine starts to run rough. In this case, tripling is constant and occurs in all modes of engine operation. Engine thrust drops significantly, and significant excess fuel consumption is observed.
Please note that in this case you cannot drive the car, as there is a high risk of damaging the catalyst and oxygen sensor (lybda probe). To confirm the diagnosis, you need to measure the compression, and to solve the problem itself, you need to remove the cylinder head, troubleshoot the head and change the valve.

How to protect from water when washing
The best remedy is, of course, not to wash the engine. But how to remove oil stains? There are several ways. The most neutral one, which does not lead to consequences, is to buy a grease remover from dishes in a store, spray it on and wait a few minutes until everything drips down. Then use a compressor to thoroughly blow through all engine parts. But no moisture or water.
The second way is to mix a little gasoline with mallow - a product that many car mechanics use to wash their hands, pour this mixture into a spray bottle, spray it on the engine and also air dry.
The car owner's reaction to the indicator's operation
It is worth immediately understanding that the light of the check does not always indicate some kind of malfunction.
How to recognize a problem signal:
- If it flashes when you start the engine and immediately stops, everything is fine, just check the operating parameters.
- If it lights up and does not go out for a long time or lights up constantly, there is something wrong with the engine. But the reason may not be serious, so you shouldn’t panic right away. Of course, a critical breakdown cannot be ruled out either.
What can cause the engine to run unstably?
Most often, the “check” can blink and the engine may run unstably when the fourth cylinder of the injector, which has 8 valves, fails. However, this formulation is incorrect, the reasons may be the following:
- problems with the spark plug;
- low compression in cylinders;
- the valves have not been adjusted for a long time (they do not fit tightly);
- the injectors are clogged or overfilled (they will have to be replaced);
- spark plug wire breakdown;
- ignition coil malfunction;
- The crankshaft sensor is not working correctly;
- the electronic control unit has failed;
- the timing belt is misaligned (or it has completely fallen off);
- Air filter contamination.
All these reasons lead to the failure of the cylinder and the appearance of characteristic signs of a malfunction.
In this case, problems can occur simultaneously or after a certain period. Pay special attention to the following signs:
- increased engine vibration during operation - the operation of valves, rotating parts of the power plant and transmission is disrupted;
- an increase in fuel consumption and a change in the nature of exhaust gases (they will contain unburned fuel);
- reduction in engine power and reduction in vehicle maneuverability.
