Replacing brake discs on a Lada-Kalina - removing and installing discs

For braking, among other parts, brake discs are needed. During movement, they are at rest and are blown with air. When the driver presses on the appropriate pedal, the pads are pressed and the vehicle slows down. Over time, due to friction, parts wear out. Timely replacement of consumables eliminates the risks:

  • the piston jams (the pedal may fail);
  • the product will burst (the wheel brakes will fail).

VAZ cars only have front disc brakes. Therefore, even the failure of one element will affect the length of the braking distance, significantly increasing it.

Recommended replacement intervals are every 60-100 thousand km. You can also navigate by the pads - they “walk” half as much.

Symptoms of malfunctions

To determine a breakdown, you need to listen to the operation of the brake system - if the car pulls to the side when stopping, this indicates the presence of a malfunction. But you need to immediately make sure that the wheels are inflated to the minimum pressure and the pads are in good condition. Check the thickness of the brake disc - for a working one it should be more than 17.8 mm. If less, then you need to change the disks. Moreover, it is imperative to replace the Kalina brake discs on both sides at once - this will ensure maximum efficiency and uniform operation of the system. Be sure to install new pads during reassembly.

What's the result?

Replacing the Kalina front pads involves checking the performance of the brakes. The car owner pumps the system with several presses on the pedal. This makes it possible to move the caliper piston to the front brake pads.

The system is checked for control lever failure and jerking during braking.

To check how the new front pads work, you need to measure the braking distance. The tests are carried out on a flat area, separated from public roads.

Tools for work

To independently carry out the work of replacing the brake discs of the Lada Kalina, you need to acquire the following tools:

  1. A set of keys. In the process of work, you will need cap, horn and end caps for “7”, “13”, “17”.
  2. Flat screwdrivers. It is advisable to have several pieces so that during the work you can select the most convenient one.
  3. Hammer and wooden block.
  4. Hydraulic or pneumatic type jack.
  5. The wheel wrench is set to “19” (or “17”, depending on what bolts are installed on the wheels).

Be sure to secure the car on a level surface and place stops under the rear wheels.

What kind of brake discs are installed on the Lada Kalina?

Replacement of brake discs on Kalina-1 is carried out due to their wear. Standard products are better suited for domestic cars.

You can recognize them by their markings:

  • catalog number 21120-3501070-00, cost 1 thousand 56 rubles;
  • article 21120-3501070-01, price 1 thousand 45 rubles;
  • number 21120-3501070-02, sold for 860 rubles.

Kit for replacing the brake disc of Lada Kalina

You can also supply another option from foreign companies, sports models. The front pads are standard, from the Ferodo company, you can find the same ones or put them on TRW brands, which have better braking performance. It is more profitable to choose TRW GDB 1446, this option is cheaper than European production, the price is 995 rubles.

Differences in disk type and size

Manufacturers of “Kalina”-1 installed the following types of brake discs on cars:

  • Catalog number 2110-3501070-00, they are called 13 (thirteenth), TD has a diameter of 240 millimeters.
  • Number 2112-3501070-00, drivers call them 14 (fourteenth), TD with a diameter of 260 millimeters.
  • Catalog number 11186-3501070-00, car enthusiasts call it 15 (fifteenth), TD with a diameter of 284 millimeters.

If the car has wheels (13), then the disk must be 2110. On the TD 2112 the thirteenth wheel cannot be put on. On the wheel (14) you can install TD 2110, 2112. If sports TD are installed, then you need to install wheels of larger diameter.

You can change brake discs on Kalina, taking into account their type and diameter.

Most popular manufacturers, disc cost

Replacing brake discs on Kalina occurs after choosing them based on cost:

  • segment of VAZ economy class kits;
  • average cost of a VAZ 1118 set;
  • premium braking kits.

Budget products from European manufacturers, which make it easy to change the front brake discs on a Kalina.

Kalina owners know that wear on standard brake discs depends on the driver’s driving style. If necessary, they can be replaced with analogues from Europe. Usually the disc is installed taking into account the radius of the wheel.

Where can I buy good wheels?

When the time comes to replace the front brake discs on Kalina, the question arises of where to buy them. Large selection:

  • in the online store;
  • at an auto parts store;
  • in car services.

The age of information technology makes it possible to access the Internet at the place of residence.

Dismantling of mechanisms

Before replacing the front brake discs on the Kalina, you need to disassemble the entire assembly. To do this you need to follow a few simple steps:

  1. Loosen the bolts on the wheel and lift the side to be repaired using a jack.
  2. Remove the front wheel completely and lower the car onto a secure support. Try to carry out all work on supports; jacks, even the most reliable ones, should not be trusted.
  3. Now you need to disassemble the brake mechanism. Bend the metal plate that secures the bolts on the caliper at the top and bottom.
  4. Unscrew the two bolts using a 17mm wrench. If the nut turns inside, hold it with a second wrench at “17”.
  5. Disconnect the hose from the stand so as not to tear it during work.
  6. Lift the caliper and move it to the side. Screw it to the body, as far as possible from the work site.
  7. After this, remove the front brake pads.
  8. Remove the two bolts that secure the caliper housing to the hub.
  9. Using a “12” key, you need to unscrew the conical guides that secure the brake disc to the hub. If you can't unscrew them, treat them with penetrating lubricant.

Final stages of work

Before replacing the caliper, you can immediately change the pad apron. This work will not take much time. In addition, replacing the old caliper with a new one is quite simple.

This is how the brake system is adjusted

It is also advisable to change the bleeder fitting. You can install a fitting from the Volga, since these parts are identical. After this, we return to screwing the caliper with the VAZ bracket. You can not unscrew the hose from the old caliper immediately, but only after the new unit is installed. If only the bracket is being changed, then the hose should not be touched, and there is no need to bleed the brakes either.

After finishing the work, you can paint the discs with alkyd enamel. It is best to apply three layers. The replacement of the front and rear brake discs can be considered complete. All that remains is to put on the wheel.

After about 200 kilometers, the new pads will begin to wear out. Remember that under no circumstances should you suddenly slow down, for example, from 100 kilometers per hour to 20. If you brake smoothly, you will be able to avoid thermal deformation of the disk.

Do not forget that for effective braking the rear brake disc must warm up gradually and several times. Manufacturers of Kalina strongly recommend replacing the HAZ every five years or after a mileage of 100 thousand kilometers. Do not neglect this valuable advice.

Disc removal and inspection

When carrying out repairs, do not press the brake pedal - this will lead to squeezing the piston out of the caliper. As a result, these mechanisms will have to be changed, and the system will also have to be pumped. After unscrewing the guides, you need to remove the brake disc. This can be done using a special puller or the proven method - a hammer and a wooden spacer.

But usually, when replacing brake discs on a Kalina with your own hands, you do not have to resort to either the first or second method. The disc can be easily removed by hand - the metal does not stick to the wheel hub. After dismantling, carefully inspect the working surface of the disk - it should not have cracks or waviness. If thickness allows, you can sharpen the discs - it will be a little cheaper than buying new ones.

But if you had to pass a disappointing verdict on the elements, you will need to install new ones. It is advisable to purchase ventilated ones - it is easy to distinguish them, since the design consists of two halves. It is better to give preference to the following manufacturers: Ferodo, Textar, TRW, Brembo. True, their cost will be higher than that of domestic AvtoVAZ.

Allowable thickness and reasons for replacement

Each car, depending on the model, has a different minimum thickness at which discs should be replaced; there are no universal criteria. The wear of brake elements on a Chevrolet NIVA largely depends on the style and manner of driving, as well as on the condition of the road surface. Another factor influencing premature wear is insufficient clearance between the brake pad and the disc. In order to understand the condition of the wheels on a Chevrolet Niva, the manufacturer indicates the minimum and nominal thickness of the elements in the form of special marks. The minimum thickness is indicated with a small margin. As a rule, such meanings are absent on crafts.

You can determine that the ventilated discs on a Chevrolet Niva and Niva 4X4 are worn out by the following signs:

  1. If you brake sharply, vibrations occur throughout the entire body, and a beating occurs in the steering column, this is especially felt during sharp braking;
  2. When you try to brake, you hear a squeaking sound in the area of the wheels.

If these symptoms appear, it is necessary to immediately diagnose the brake system, and if any problems are identified, replace the faulty elements. If you do not wash the brake discs in time, a frictional force arises between the pad and the disc, as a result of which they heat up and begin to deform, and the brake system begins to fail. The permissible minimum thickness leads to a loss of strength of the element, and it begins to crack. On VAZ cars, for example, ventilated options have a minimum thickness of 17.8 millimeters.

You can check the wear without resorting to the help of a specialist; to do this, just find the car's operating manual, after which the wheel is removed and the wear is looked at, you can do without special tools, just look at the condition of the upper edge, it usually has a protrusion if its depth exceeds two millimeter, then replacement is required. Usually all measurements are checked with a caliper. In case of wear, the pair is replaced immediately; if only one element is replaced, imbalance will occur during braking.

Installing new drives

The sequence of actions is as follows:

  1. Install the new disc and align the holes in it and on the hub.
  2. Fit and then tighten the guide conical studs.
  3. Install the stationary part of the caliper on the hub by tightening the two bolts with a key to “17”.
  4. Install new brake pads. Please note that the piston will need to be completely recessed in the caliper. Otherwise, new pads cannot be installed.
  5. When replacing Kalina brake discs, be sure to check the condition of all elements - this will allow you to avoid repairs for a long time.
  6. To recess the piston, you need to unscrew the bleeder fitting a little.
  7. Place the moving part in place; the guides must be treated with silicone grease. It is able to withstand high temperatures, unlike “Litol” or “Shrus”.
  8. Tighten the two bolts and, if necessary, hold the nut from the inside with a “17” wrench.
  9. Bend the edges of the metal plate.

At this point the repair is complete, you can install the wheel and enjoy the ride. When braking, the car will not pull to the side.

Before you begin this repair, you first need to measure the thickness of the brake rotor. If it is less than 17.8 mm, then in this case it will be necessary to make a replacement. To complete this work, we will need a certain set of accessories, which I will write about in detail below.

Changing the rear pads

Replacing the rear brake pads of a Lada Kalina is a complex operation, and it’s good that it is recommended to perform it every 60,000 km (4th scheduled maintenance). The principle of operation of drum brakes is easy to explain: there is a cylinder installed under the drum and two pistons that press on the pads. But in practice, disassembling the drum mechanism turns out to be more difficult than changing disc brake pads.

Steps to replace drum brake pads, VAZ-2192/2194

First of all, you will need to fix the car body on the support stand, and only then can you remove the rear wheel. Next, the sequence of actions looks like this:

  1. The handbrake handle is lowered all the way down;
  2. 7 wrench (socket wrench with a hex head), unscrew the two studs holding the drum;
  3. The brake drum must be removed: the body is turned by lightly hitting it with a hammer through a block in the “toward” direction;
  4. Remove the upper and lower tension springs, remove the pad stops from the piston slots;
  5. Short guide springs are disconnected from each of the pads (there will be two in total);
  6. The block located closer to the front side of the body is removed. Then, remove the spacer bar;
  7. The second block is removed along with the parking brake lever.

Finally, the block and the handbrake lever will need to be disconnected (just remove the mounting cotter pin). Installation is carried out in reverse order. To quickly secure the guide spring, insert a wire into its eyelet and pull it towards you.

Installation of brake pads in drums, VAZ-2192/2194

The photos posted in this chapter show parts with serial number 3502090-01 (“Standard”). More expensive trim levels use pads 3502090-10, which have a slot for the ABS sensor.

Check out what we said in the previous chapter. New pads must first be allowed to “break in”. Their effectiveness can be assessed after several hours of continuous use.

When considering how to replace the cabin filter, we listed the manufacturers of parts and the differences in designations. In this case, the parts are designated the same: 3502090-01 or 10 (rear pads). As for the front pads, there will be several options:

  • 1118-3501080-00 – manufacturer is AvtoVAZ;
  • 1118-3501080-05 – issued by JSC TIIR;
  • 1118-3501080-15 – the same as “05”, but with an anti-squeak plate;
  • 2192-3501080-19 – the same as “05”, but with an anti-noise complex.

Don't go wrong with your choice! As a last resort, you can contact specialists, but preferably not the ones shown here.

Advantages and disadvantages of different types of brakes

People tend to quickly get used to the conveniences that various technical means provide them. Do you have a desire to find out what is good about the rear disc brakes installed on Kalina?

Many experienced drivers will argue that rear disc brakes are much more effective than drum brakes. And we can quite agree with them. Naturally, skeptics will find shortcomings in such a braking system.

It's no secret that rear disc brakes are much more expensive than drum brakes. Caring for a disk system is much more difficult because it really does not like dirt. Particular difficulties arise if the car is an SUV. In general, there are many opinions from both experienced and novice drivers about which brakes are best.
