Replacing the cabin filter Ford Focus 2 dorestyling, restyling, with and without removing the gas pedal

The filter in the cabin of the Ford Focus 2, as in other cars, is installed to purify the air entering the ventilation system from the outside, and from there into the car interior, from various debris. The manufacturer recommends changing the cabin filter every 15 thousand kilometers, at least once a year. However, given the condition of our roads, which are far from meeting the European standard, experts agree that the cabin filter should be replaced more often - at least every 7-10 thousand kilometers, at least twice a year.

Perhaps you yourself will feel something wrong with the cabin filter. Failure of the cabin filter will be marked by problems in the operation of the stove or air conditioner. When turned on, it will blow weakly and an unpleasant odor will begin to invade the interior. Don’t waste time, check the condition of the cabin filter and change it in a timely manner.

What is a cabin filter for?

It is no secret that the ventilation/heating system, as well as the air conditioner, use outside air in their operation, entering the air duct system either through the radiator grille or through the air intake openings on the hood.

A person tends to believe that he is breathing clean air if there are no visible dust particles in it. In reality, things don't look so rosy: firstly, because of the small size of dust particles, and secondly, because of their ability to be invisible unless direct sunlight falls on them in low light conditions (and such conditions do occur). infrequently). The human body has a built-in filter in the form of the nasopharynx and upper respiratory tract, but this protection is not nearly as effective.

In the case of a car, we have to admit that dust entering the cabin from the ventilation system accumulates in a closed space in incredible concentrations, causing a lot of problems, especially for allergy sufferers. The cabin filter is designed to cleanse the outside air of pollutants of a certain size, and some varieties can even prevent foreign odors from entering the cabin.

What types of cabin filters are there for Ford Focus and what to look for when choosing

As a rule, cabin filters are divided into three types: standard, carbon and anti-allergenic. To understand which one is right for your car, you need to study their characteristics.

  1. Simple filter. This cleaning element works on the principle of simple mechanical cleaning. They are most often made from plain paper. At the very beginning these were simple single-layer devices. Today, this option is used quite rarely, and it is chosen only for the purpose of maximum savings. After some time, multilayer synthetic materials began to be used to make filters. This option is suitable for cars that are driven on country roads in areas with good environmental conditions.
  2. Carbon filter. This is the most effective air purification option. The materials from which the filter element is made necessarily contain carbon particles, and the smaller the particles, the better the quality of cleaning. Activated carbon is a cheap but very effective adsorbent that can absorb benzene vapors, phenol fractions, sulfur oxides, nitrogen and lead and asbestos vapors and other vapors.

Features of cabin filters

Replacing the cabin filter yourself is easy. But before you “climb” into it, you need to buy a new element.

Naturally, it is better to purchase an original cleaning element, although it is more expensive.

But the auto parts market is quite extensive, so you can find a cheaper and non-original filter.

It is only important that the item being purchased is suitable in size and intended for this car.

Now a little about the filters themselves. They are available in two types - dust and coal.

The first of them is made from cellulose; it provides good air purification from foreign impurities.

The carbon filter is also made of cellulose, but it is impregnated with activated carbon.

The presence of carbon particles allows such a filter not only to purify the air, but also to neutralize harmful chemical compounds. Therefore, for drivers with allergies it is better to use just such a filter.

But the carbon element has its own peculiarity. Neutralization of harmful substances is carried out by retaining them with coal particles. But over time, these particles become so saturated with these substances that they no longer retain them and they begin to actively enter the cabin.

Therefore, the service life of a carbon element is shorter than that of a conventional dust element.

Having purchased a new consumable, you can begin to replace it. In addition to this, you will also need two things:

  • A screwdriver with interchangeable bits (you will need either a Phillips bit or a T15 Torx);
  • Where is the cabin filter located and what are its functions?

Cabin filter for Ford Focus 2
A variety of harmful substances gradually accumulate in the car interior: nitrogen oxide, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, aromatic hydrocarbons and much more. Dust also accumulates in the cabin. The purpose of the cabin filter is to reduce the concentration of harmful substances in the cabin to acceptable standards. It effectively absorbs both harmful substances and dust. But, of course, the resource of his work is limited. To get to the cabin filter, you should open the cab on the driver's side and look at the gas pedal. There is a small lid next to it. Below it is the cabin filter.

Sequence of work

In the Ford Focus 3, the cabin filter is located behind the center console and can be reached from the front passenger side.

Having prepared everything, you can start working:

We immobilize the car and make sure to put it on the handbrake. To gain access to the cabin filter cover, it is necessary to remove the fuse box protective panel located below the glove compartment. This panel is easy to recognize - it is fastened with two pistons; Carefully remove the pistons, and then remove the protective panel and put it aside; Two chips connected to the fuse block may prevent you from removing the consumable. When removing a used element, it will rest against these chips, so we disconnect them; There will be a cover installed on the side wall of the center console that needs to be removed; In Focus models of 3 different years of production, this cover is secured in its own way. In some it is screwed with a bolt with a Phillips screwdriver head, in others it is with a T15 Torx head, and in others it may not have this bolt at all. If there is still a bolt, unscrew it; The lid is also held in place by two latches located on its sides. We press these latches, pull the cover towards you a little, and then pull it down and remove it; There is a filter under the cover; carefully remove it. It may rest against something, so to make removal easier, you can squeeze and bend the old consumable; Wipe the inside of the case with a rag to remove debris and dust; We install a new one in place of the removed one.

It is important to place it correctly. There are arrows on the end surface of the filter; there may also be the inscription “Air Flow”

The arrows indicate the direction of air movement, that is, when installing a new filter, they should point towards the passenger compartment, not the engine compartment; Carefully install the new cleaning element. When installing it, you can also bend and compress it a little. The only important thing is not to damage it. Having installed it in place, we check and, if necessary, straighten the filter so that it is positioned correctly and there are no gaps between it and the housing; Replace the cover and secure it with clamps and a bolt (if present). We connect the chips to the safety block, put the protective panel in place and secure it with caps.

This operation will take no more than 20 minutes to complete. Therefore, it is not necessary to contact a service station to have them change the cabin filter; anyone can change this element on a Ford Focus 3, quickly and saving money.

Timely replacement of this element will ensure clean air in the cabin, absence of dust and litter, adding comfort.

Types of cabin filters Ford Focus 2

Of course, we are not talking about products with different geometries, but as for the quality and material of execution, there can be a variety of options. The simplest and cheapest filter element, regardless of whether it is an original consumable or a product manufactured by a third-party company, is made from special paper. It can be rolled up in several layers and impregnated with various compounds that prevent rapid clogging and improve the filtering properties of the material, but it is not worth talking about the outstanding protective qualities of a filter that costs about 350 rubles. But it provides adequate protection from dust.

The Ford Focus 2 carbon cabin filter is more expensive, but it provides better protection for the cabin - according to the results of numerous studies, its efficiency is about 95%, which is considered a very good indicator. Of course, these figures are only valid for a relatively new filter element. Activated carbon is used as one of the impregnation layers, which, together with a package of additives, ensures the oxidation of some harmful substances contained in the atmospheric air, helping to eliminate unpleasant odors. Both the manufacturer and the car owners themselves consider this type of cabin filter to be the most effective, preferring to buy it, despite the higher cost (from 500 rubles in the case of a non-original product to 1200 rubles). The same filter element, but with slightly different dimensions, is installed on the third Focus.

Selecting an element.

The Ford Focus 2 cabin filter must match the specific car model. The pre-restyling and restyled versions use the same model. But on the 3rd generation of cars, the element dimensions are approximately 8 millimeters smaller. The use of such an element will lead to the accumulation of dust inside the air recirculation system, reducing the service life of the radiators of the stove, air conditioner and fan.

The article number of the original Ford cabin filter is 1 354 953. But at the moment there are many fakes on the market, so in order not to overpay, you can choose more affordable analogues:

Replacement frequency

The manufacturer of Ford Focus 3 has established that this element must be replaced every 30 thousand km. However, our road realities make their own adjustments.

And if in winter the air dust content is lower, in summer there are a lot of foreign impurities, which significantly reduces the operating time of the cabin filter, to about 15 thousand kilometers.

If the car is operated in very dusty conditions, it may be necessary to replace the filter even earlier. Therefore, it is not necessary to strictly follow the frequency of changing the air purification element for the cabin according to mileage.

When to change the filter on Focus 2

The manufacturer recommends changing the cabin filter every second oil change. If, for example, the car is used in a big city, then it is advisable to carry out this event more often. In addition, it is worth paying attention to several points that may hint that it is time to change the cabin filter on the Ford Focus 2.

  • The heater or air conditioner is blowing weakly. This is logical, because the filter is simply clogged and air does not pass through it.
  • Foreign odors have appeared. There is no need to explain anything here either. The filter just can't do it anymore. Sometimes it is the filter itself that causes an unpleasant odor in the cabin.
  • Increased fogging of windows. This is especially noticeable in the off-season, so it is better to change the cabin filter at the end of each summer or winter.

Symptoms of a clogged cabin filter

The following signs indicate that the filter element needs to be changed:

  • the appearance of a large amount of dust in the cabin, which is noticeable even without direct sunlight;
  • an unpleasant odor that cannot be eliminated by ventilating the car also indicates the need for immediate replacement;
  • the speed and power of the air flow has decreased when the ventilation is turned on, the stove or air conditioner is running;
  • fuel consumption has increased.

Replacement algorithm

First, you need to determine the location of the filter in your Ford Focus 2. To find it, you need to open the door to the cabin on the driver’s side. There is a cover behind the gas pedal on the right, and the filter is located behind it.

There are two ways to replace it yourself. They differ in the need to remove the gas pedal.

Step-by-step instructions for replacing and removing the pedal:

  1. Unscrew the bolts on the gas pedal. At the same time, do not disconnect the block with wires! This is due to the fact that the resource of the connector is very limited, and after ten on-off switches it will have to be changed.
  2. Pull back the pedal.
  3. Unscrew the screws from the cover covering the cleaning barrier.
  4. Remove the cover.
  5. Smoothly pull the cabin filter and remove it from the opening.
  6. Squeeze the new filter and insert it into the opening, placing the arrow towards the interior. It is in this direction that the filter passes air and cleans it of impurities.
  7. Place the cover in place and screw it on.
  8. Replace the gas pedal and tighten it.

This completes the filter replacement. As practice shows, the entire procedure takes about half an hour without unnecessary steps. However, some Ford Focus 2 car owners consider this method too long and troublesome. Therefore, we found an opportunity to carry out the procedure without twisting the pedal. This is facilitated by the high elasticity of the filter.

According to specialists in replacing the filter using a simplified scheme, the main thing is to take the right position. To do this, you need to lie on your side between the driver’s seat and the pedals so that you can reach the filter cover with your hands. Further:

  1. Holding the key with your left hand, unscrew the bottom screw with your right.
  2. Unscrew the remaining two only with your left hand.
  3. Squeeze the filter and insert it into the box. Don't forget about the direction of the arrow!
  4. Install the cover starting from the bottom corner.

According to craftsmen, this method of installing a cabin air purifier on a Ford Focus 2 takes only a few minutes.

You can test the result by turning on the air conditioner or stove according to the season. Experienced car owners note that a well-chosen high-quality filter can seriously improve the condition of the air in the cabin. Drivers who have tried purifiers from different manufacturers and different types claim that a good carbon filter even fights the emissions of passing buses and trucks filled with less than the best fuel.

Which cabin filter to choose

How to choose and how to change the cabin filter of a Ford Focus 2 is a question that interests many car owners. Today there is a large selection of products on store shelves, but only some of them are suitable for their intended purpose. So how can you tell a real cabin filter from a fake?

Fakes

The most common fake is the branded Ford 1 cabin filter marked “354 953”. It is quite easy to distinguish it from the original:

  • Sloppy, inaccurate Ford logo, color shift, poor printing.
  • The packaging is made of crispy hard cellophane.
  • The weight of the original filter is 300 g ± 10 g, the fake filter is 180-200 g.
  • The original filter has 31 folds on the element, while the fake filter has no more than 20-22.
  • There are no indications of the direction of correct installation on the end of the fake (no inscriptions or arrows).
  • The fake filter is approximately 10-15 mm smaller in length and width than the original.

Such distinctive features will help you make the right choice of filter for cleaning the interior of your Ford Focus 2.

Originals

List of original cabin filters (carbon):

  • Ford 1 354 953 – price from 990 rub.
  • BSG BSG30145004 – from 450 rub.

Rules for choosing a new device

The manufacturer installs a simple filter element. It is recommended to replace it with coal, as this device will not allow dust to enter the interior and will neutralize unpleasant odors.

When purchasing a salon product, it is recommended to give preference to high-quality originals or analogues.

Original product for Ford Focus 1 suitable for all car models. It should have a weight of 290-310 grams, a width of 206-210 millimeters and 31 folds. If the spare interior part does not meet these parameters, then it is counterfeit. Most often, unscrupulous manufacturers counterfeit the original Ford part 1354953. A counterfeit has distinctive features by which it is identified:

  • Hard and crisp cellophane is used to make original packaging.
  • a non-original spare part is 10-15 millimeters shorter or longer in length.
  • there are no arrows on the end of the fake to indicate correct installation.
  • The weight of the original is about 300 grams, the fakes are about 200.
  • The aftermarket part is characterized by a sloppy and sloppy Ford logo, poor printing, and discoloration.
  • the fake filter has 20-22 pleats.

If you cannot find the original cabin filter, it is recommended to install analogues:

  1. Filter K 1150A. This is a carbon filter that is designed to clean the air in a car. Thanks to the use of activated carbon in the production process of filters, not only harmful gases are removed from the cabin, but also unpleasant odors. The filter is sized to fit the Ford Focus 2, ensuring easy installation.
  2. Filter LARGE GB-9814. Carbon filters are produced, the sizes of which are ideally matched to the Ford Focus 2 car. Thanks to the use of advanced filter materials, high-quality cleaning of the air inside the car from dust and contaminants is ensured. The filtration system can completely eliminate unpleasant odors. The increased efficiency of the device is guaranteed by the use of synthetic material for its manufacture.
  3. MANN-FILTER CUK 2440. This is a high-quality filter at an affordable price. Compared to the original, it contains less carbon, but this does not affect the quality of air purification. Thanks to the use of pressing technology in the production of the device, high-quality filtering capabilities are guaranteed.
  4. Delphi TSP0325305C. They are a worthy replacement for original filter systems. The cabin filter has stable operation and can be used for a long time. The device consists of three layers, between which an electrostatic charge is created. Thanks to this, microparticles are attracted as efficiently as possible. Thanks to the presence of activated carbon in the filter, high-quality neutralization of unpleasant odors is guaranteed.

For Ford Focus 2 cars, cabin filters Corteco 80000061, GoodWill AG248, Fortech FS-018, etc. are suitable. Their choice depends on the preferences of the car owner.

Cabin filter

The main purpose is to clean the air entering the ventilation system from various mechanical impurities. Like any filter element, this part needs to be replaced. The manufacturer has established an average service life of 1 year. When operating vehicles in highly polluted air conditions, such a filter element can be replaced more often.

Signs of contamination

During vehicle operation, the filter element in the ventilation air cleaning unit becomes clogged. The main signs that the Ford Focus 2 cabin filter is clogged may include changes such as deterioration in the efficiency of the heating module and air conditioner or the accumulation of condensation on the inner surface of the windshield. In such cases, its replacement is simply necessary. Considering the simplicity of the technical operation and the fact that the price of the filter element is low, it can be replaced more often without expecting obvious signs of contamination.

Necessary tool

To dismantle the old and install a new filter element, you do not need any special accessories. To do this, it is enough to have two heads with an internal hexagon of 7 and 10, a mechanical or electrical device for unscrewing bolts and nuts. You should also purchase the filter element itself. Since the niche where the Ford Focus 2 cabin filter is located is in a fairly dark place, the presence of a flashlight will greatly facilitate the replacement process. Let's look at the process of replacing the cabin filter of a Ford Focus 2.

Step-by-step instruction

Such a technological operation is not a complex technical process that is associated with any difficulties. To replace the filter element of the cabin ventilation system on a car of this model, you must follow the following sequence:

  1. First you need to remove the gas pedal, which makes access to the cabin filter assembly difficult. To do this, you need to unscrew the fastening nuts that secure the gas pedal, after which you need to remove it and move it to the side. When unscrewing the nuts, you need to use a special wrench with a 10-mm head. The connector should not be disconnected from the gas pedal, as this can lead to a malfunction of the electronic module, the cost of which is much more than the price of the filter element.
  2. After this, using a 7 socket socket, unscrew the screws securing the filter element cover. The cover is located in a dark place, so when unscrewing and installing it, it is better to use a flashlight or a carrying case. Then you need to remove the lid and set it aside. After this, with careful movements you need to remove the old filter element from its installation location.
  3. In practice, replacing a filter involves installing a new element to replace the old one. Next, you need to carefully consider the direction of the arrows on the new filter element. The correct position of the filter in the air duct cavity is considered to be one in which the indicator arrows are directed into the interior of the cabin. Having decided on the position of the element, you need to carefully push it into its installation location.
  4. Then you should install the parts removed during disassembly.

Air filter

Purification of the air entering the engine is carried out by means of an “air blower”, either in the form of a cylinder, or a paper form, in the form of a flat rectangle. Subsequently, designers began to use the second type, since cylindrical filters have a large filter surface in relation to their size. Filters for cleaning the air entering the engine have their own classification.

In practice, car enthusiasts most often use advanced filters that, if the air flow deteriorates, do not interfere with the operation of the engine. Therefore, advanced filters are successfully used, such as:

  • zero resistance filter, which is subsequently installed in a standard box;
  • a filter that does not provide resistance, but is installed separately;
  • remote

What makes these filters different from others is that they are made from high-quality materials, so they continue to work well regardless of the conditions. But in order for them to continue to work effectively, they need to be lubricated periodically.

They also differ in installation, and the choice of one filter or another depends on the preferences of the car owner.

Why change the air filter?

What happens if you remove the air filter and continue to drive the car? If you open the hood of a car, especially during the dry summer period, what do we see? A layer of dust. On everything.

If the car were operated without an air filter, then a fair amount of this very dust would be sucked inside the cylinders and, together with the lubricant, would cover its inner walls with a thin layer at each suction stroke. When the piston ran through such a mixture of oil and dust, the effect would be exactly the same as if an abrasive had been poured into the engine. Naturally, with such work, the resource of both the cylinder and the piston will not last long. But before it gets into the cylinder, this sandblasting mixture will also “treat” the intake valves.

Saving on replacement doesn't do any good either. If the replacement filter element is heavily clogged, the engine does not receive the required amount of air and the air-fuel mixture becomes rich, which leads to incomplete combustion of fuel and, as a consequence, to additional fuel consumption and loss of power.

How often do you change the air filter?

The Ford Focus 2 air filter, according to technical regulations, is replaced after every 60 thousand kilometers, but at least once every 3 years. When choosing the frequency of replacement, it is worth considering the area in which the car is operated. If you often drive on dusty roads, experts recommend changing the filter twice as often.

Selection and price

Selecting spare parts is a responsible undertaking. Especially given the diversity that has recently taken place in our trade. In particular, for the car model in question, air filters are produced by companies located all over the world. The price range is as wide as the geography of factories.

However, when choosing an air filter, you need to pay attention to a number of features:

  • what filter element is used, because the quality of air purification depends on this. They are predominantly chosen with non-woven material, since here the degree of purification is more than 90%, as for analogues, it is much lower there;
  • quality of the filter element. It must be durable and reliable, in addition, it is recommended to stick to the choice of filters from good, trusted manufacturers and settle on one option;
  • installation housing dimensions.

It is up to the owner to decide which air filter is best installed on the car. But practice proves that the most acceptable option is the original, the price of which is about 20 dollars - although it is more expensive than the analogue, it is better for your car.

The price of a non-original model ranges from 8 to 15 dollars.

Popular manufacturers:

  1. air filters are more expensive, but with internationally recognized quality: you can buy English PURFLUX from 500 rubles, or, for example, American FRAM for about 450 rubles;
  2. cheaper goods are filters made in Poland KAMOKA, or, say, Turkish PATRON; their cost starts from 250 rubles;
  3. The middle ground in price, but not in quality, not much inferior to the leaders, would be the German BOSH with a price of 400 rubles.

Where is it located?

The job of replacing the Ford Focus 2 air filter is not difficult. In principle, a person with basic technical skills can easily perform it on their own. Where is the air filter located on the vehicle in question? It is visible immediately, you just lift the hood. On the driver's side near the battery in a plastic case.

Replacement process in stages:

  1. First you need to gain access to the replacement filter element. However, before removing the filter housing, it does not hurt to pay tribute to technical culture - to wipe the housing itself from dust and dirt deposits. Two minutes of working with a rag ensures that fine sand and other dirt will not get into the purified air cavity.
  2. Along the perimeter of the cover there are four fixing bolts (most often a cross-head screwdriver). They need to be unscrewed. They are securely fixed in the housing, so they will not fall on the engine.

  3. After the cover is removed and the filter element is removed, wipe the interior with a clean rag.
  4. Install a new filter element.
  5. The cover is returned to its place in the same sequence.

The entire replacement process will take no more than half an hour.

Have a nice trip!

Execution nuances

  • The old filter should be removed very carefully so that dirt from it does not get into the corrugated air duct hose. It will be difficult to remove it from there without a car vacuum cleaner.
  • It is far from a fact that the new filter will fit into its original place without problems. To make the installation process easier, apply a little automotive lubricant to the edges of the niche in which the filter is installed (WD-40 lubricant is excellent).
  • When tightening the self-tapping screws on the cabin filter cover, you do not need to exert much effort: the threads in the holes for them break off very easily, especially if the socket wrench is long.

Algorithm

  1. Using a 10mm socket, unscrew the 3 nuts on the gas pedal.

    These nuts need to be unscrewed

  2. The pedal is removed and moved to the side.

    The gas pedal is unscrewed and moved away

  3. There are 3 screws on the cabin filter cover. They are unscrewed using a 7mm socket.

    These 3 screws need to be unscrewed

  4. Provides access to the cabin filter. It is carefully removed from its regular place.
  5. A new filter is installed in its place, after which it is reassembled.

How to change (video)

Changing the cabin filter of Focus 2 by removing the accelerator pedal

There is another option. If we are two meters tall and have a build like Stallone, it will be difficult to turn around in the cabin. Closely. Therefore, you can start the procedure by removing the pedal. Before changing the filter, you should unscrew with a 10mm head the three nuts that secure the accelerator. But it is not necessary to disconnect the wires going to the sensor; just move the pedal to the side.

An experienced and competent motorist will take a few minutes, a maximum of half an hour, to complete the entire event. But you shouldn’t rush, so you don’t have to look for a mount for the cover or accelerator. Those car owners who doubt their own abilities and do not risk replacing the cabin filter on Focus 2 with their own hands are better off turning to qualified professionals for help.

In this case, the arrows on the filter should be directed towards the car interior.

According to reviews from Focus II owners, the original filter (Visteon) makes the process somewhat simpler. The original filter is elastic, bends and twists easily, and after releasing it returns to its original shape. This allows you to keep your foot on the gas pedal.

And if the pedal is still removed, do not be too lazy to replace the standard compressed nuts with those, for example, that are secured with a nylon belt - you will avoid the procedure for replacing the studs.

How to change the cabin filter of a Ford Focus 2 without removing the gas pedal

Experienced motorists offer several replacement options. Replacing the filter without removing the gas pedal seems impossible for most car owners. Although there is nothing supernatural about this and the procedure itself can be performed independently.

Replacement algorithm:

  1. Lie down in the cabin on your left side, facing the chair.

  2. Using a 7 key, tighten the three screws - the bottom one with your right hand, and the 2 top ones with your left hand.

  3. Remove the cover and pull out the filter.

  4. Lightly crumple the new part to give the shape of the opening.

  5. Install the filter in the direction of the arrow shown on the part (from the driver's door to the passenger's door) and straighten it slightly by hand.
  6. Secure the lid, starting from the bottom corner.

IMPORTANT! You need to crush the cabin filter carefully so as not to damage it. For this reason, it is recommended to take a high-quality element, albeit more expensive.

Is there a difference in work on the Ford Focus II restyling?

In 2008, Ford Focus cars were restyled. The changes concerned the vehicle body. Inside the car, the dashboard has been modified. Restyling did not affect the filter system. Car models that were produced after 2008 have an interior device under the gas pedal, so its replacement is carried out according to the instructions indicated above.

Replacement of interior parts can be carried out at a car service center. But, in order to save money, it is recommended to carry out the manipulation yourself, despite the possibility of difficulties arising during removal and installation.
