Replacing the gear selector rod oil seal for VAZ 2114 - 2109.

Hello. In this article I will tell you how to replace the gear selector rod oil seal on VAZ 2114 and later models such as the VAZ 2109. At the end of the article there is a video for a better understanding of the replacement process. When you find fresh drops of oil under the car, this is a reason to drive it into a pit or overpass for inspection. If a worn gear selector rod seal is to blame, you will see a fresh oil stain around the rod. If there are leaks, check the oil level.

Along with the oil seal, it is best to change the cardan housing, since oil from the box most likely got on it. Rubber quickly begins to crack after oil gets on it. Another argument in favor of replacing the yoke cardan boot together with the box rod seal is the possible damage to the boot during removal. Well, let's begin! First of all, bend the cardan boot and put a mark between the gearshift lever and the cardan. This is done so as not to adjust the position of the gear shift lever during assembly.

Now you can start turning the nuts! We take the key 13 and unscrew the bolt of the gearshift lever clamp and remove the lever from the cardan.

Pulling the boot towards the box, unscrew the bolt with a 10mm wrench and remove the cardan from the gear selector rod along with the boot.

You can get it in three ways:

  1. Using a thin hook.
  2. Using self-tapping screws.
  3. Along with the bushing.

The first method is quite simple. We insert the hook between the oil seal and the gear selector rod, turn the hook so that it catches on the oil seal and take it out. During this action, it is important not to scratch the gear selector rod! The second method is also not complicated. We take two self-tapping screws and screw them into the oil seal from different sides. We pull out the oil seal using the screws.

The third way to remove the gear selector rod seal from the gearbox is to knock it out along with the bushing. Take a screwdriver and hammer and knock out the bushing. Next, use the same screwdriver to remove the oil seal from the bushing.

We press in the oil seal.

If you removed the oil seal using the first two methods, i.e. without knocking out the bushing, then to press in a new one, you need to select a tube corresponding to the diameter of the oil seal (approximately 24mm outer diameter). In the case when the oil seal is removed with the bushing, simply press the oil seal by placing the 22 socket on it.

Next, coat the bushing with sealant and hammer it into place.

The first one, which I use and recommend to you, is replacing the rocker seal in the inspection hole by knocking out the bushing along with the seal. The second method does not require a viewing hole or overpass, but will require you to have a certain dexterity of hands, body flexibility and the presence of one (two) long screws. Since screwing these screws into the oil seal, pulling it out and pressing it into place while lying under the car..... This is not for everyone! Both dexterity and flexibility will be very useful to you here. But, let's take things in order. From the introduction we move on to the main thing.

Let's start with the arsenal of the necessary tools for replacing the gear shift rod oil seal on VAZ-2108, VAZ-2109, VAZ-21099, VAZ-2110, VAZ-2114, VAZ-2115 : two 13 keys, a 10 key, a wrench or screwdriver for knocking out the oil seal bushing, a small hammer, a 22mm socket, silicone sealant (Abrovsky 999 is perfect). For those who are still going to change the oil seal from the “lying on the ground” position, the list of tools does not change much: two 13 wrenches, a 10 wrench, a small hammer, one or two long self-tapping screws, a piece of pipe of suitable length and diameter for pressing the oil seal. (I can’t tell you the exact dimensions, since I don’t use this method).

Spare parts. Everything is simple here. We buy a Balakovo shift rod oil seal and immediately a cardan shaft boot, look at photo number 2. Practice has shown that in most cases this boot is either already torn or will tear during the removal process. So, we don’t rely on chance, and we buy the boot right away, and the costs are small. And you can save your nerves and time. And also... Recently, new gear shift rod seals appeared on the market, codenamed “Reinforced”!!! Look at comparative photo No. 3, on the left. I won’t praise or recommend them yet, since I’ve only installed one so far. On the problematic rod, which was leaking even with two seals. As they say, time will tell how strong it is)))

Now the final part is a description of replacing the gear shift rod oil seal on VAZ-2108, VAZ-2109, VAZ-21099, VAZ-2110, VAZ-2114, VAZ-2115 :

Using two 13mm wrenches, we loosen the clamp of the transmission control rod (the connection between the rod and the driveshaft can be marked in advance so that you don’t have to adjust the gear shift later) and disconnect the rod from the driveshaft (photo 4).

Pull the boot back and use a 10mm wrench to unscrew the bolt securing the cardan to the gearshift rod (photo 5). Remove the cardan and boot.

Using a screwdriver, resting it against the side, we knock out the bushing from the gearbox (photo 6).

Using the same screwdriver, we knock the oil seal out of the bushing and with a 22-inch head, press the oil seal in until it stops (photos 7 and 8).

Lubricate the bushing with sealant and press it into the gearbox with gentle blows of a hammer (photo 9).

For those who will work “from the ground” - perform steps 1 and 2, screw the screws into the oil seal, pull the screws and pull out the oil seal, press a new one with a tube of suitable diameter and length.

All! The main part is finished. All that remains is to assemble everything in reverse order and admire the fruits of your labor.

    4. Remove the boot, use a 10mm wrench to unscrew the bolt securing it to the gearbox rod.
    5. Using an awl or a thin screwdriver, remove the old oil seal. Inspect it for damage.
    6. Install the new oil seal using a pipe or large washer to press in.

    After replacement, install the boot. Assess the condition of the cardan: if it has too much play, it will need replacement. After carrying out all the work, be sure to check that the speeds are turned on correctly.
