Perhaps the bushings on the rocker (or the ball) are broken - in this case, the gear is not engaged and when the load is transferred from the engine to the wheels through the gear system (not fully engaged), the gear is spit out. Here you need to either adjust the link, or change the worn parts and adjust again!
