The second way to get rid of the steering wheel lock is to completely remove the ignition switch. In the resulting hole we either mount the “Start/Stop” button or install a plastic plug of a suitable size. The main disadvantage of this method is that it will no longer be possible to quickly “return” to the standard circuit of turning the car engine on/off using a key.

Will installing a “Start Stop” button instead of the ignition switch protect your car from theft?

Some drivers believe that installing a Start/Stop button makes the car vulnerable to car theft. This is not true: you can install it, and it is safe. Almost all modern cars have contactless key fobs. If we assume that the attacker somehow opened the car door, but he did not use the “original” key, the button will not allow the engine to start. This most likely will not help protect your car from professional car thieves, because they use repeaters to intercept the radio signal from the car's control panel.   1. the car is removed from the alarm system, power is supplied to pin 1 of the RZPTF, and the backlight turns on;

  3. the button is held until the engine starts, then it is released, the starter relay is turned off, the engine continues to run;
  4. pressing again stops the engine;
  5. After setting the car to the alarm system, the backlight goes out.

To make this device yourself you will need:

  • 4 relays: PTF 21.3777 (300 rubles), 231.3787 (150 rubles), 90.3747-10 (2 pieces for 75 rubles);
  • 4 diodes (for example, 4007 - 4 rubles per piece);
  • button without fixation (30÷70 rubles);
  • installation wires of suitable diameter;
  • crimp terminal blocks (“female” - for switching relays among themselves, “male” - for connecting the manufactured unit to the ignition switch block).

Advantages and disadvantages

Any car tuning has both pros and cons. Among the advantages of controlling the start/stop of the engine using the “Start/Stop” button, one can note only a slight increase in comfort and minimal time savings. And here are the disadvantages (where would we be without them):

  • You will still have to carry the key with you. Firstly, it may be needed to simply open the car if the battery is dead and the electromagnetic door activators do not work (this is especially true at significant sub-zero temperatures). Secondly, in many modern cars the standard immobilizer mark is located in the key, so you can start the engine only if it is in close proximity to the reader.
  • The installation of pre-heating devices and alarm systems becomes more complicated (due to changes in the standard electrical circuit of the car).

Installing the “Start-Stop” button from Aliexpress

We will consider the procedure for installing the device on a VAZ car (Lada Kalina) while maintaining the possibility of using the standard ignition switch. In this case, only the steering wheel lock is missing. If the push-button mechanism fails, you can turn it off, connect the standard ignition switch connector and start the engine using the key. To maintain this possibility, it is recommended to purchase a block with wires for the ignition switch contact group.

Installation and connection sequence:

  1. Remove the ignition switch by removing the four screws using a screwdriver.

  2. Disassemble and remove the steering lock mechanism.
  3. Disconnect connectors.

  4. Disassemble the contact group housing and remove the immobilizer antenna.
  5. Install the engine start button in the selected location.
  6. Solder the wires according to the diagram, insulating them with heat shrink. Remove unnecessary wires from the block.

  7. Install everything in reverse order.
  8. Connect the green wire to the brake block (contact No. 4, in our situation - red). A “+” should appear on this contact when you press the brake pedal.

Checking the system operation:

  • Initially the button is inactive;
  • To unlock, you need to bring the key fob from the kit to the reader (a double signal should sound);
  • If there is no button press within 15 seconds, automatic blocking will occur (a single signal will sound);
  • after unlocking, the first press turns on ACC (in our situation it is not used), the second press turns on the ignition, the third turns off the system (if you do not first press the brake pedal);
  • With the brake pedal pressed, pressing the button a third time will start the engine;
  • quick start of the engine is possible - you need to press the brake pedal and simply hold the button for 1-3 seconds until the power unit starts;
  • To stop the engine, press the brake pedal and press the button.
