Editing a damaged body

A significant part of the repair work on cars, especially those received after road accidents, falls on body repairs. In most cases, repairs require checking the geometry of the attachment points of components and assemblies of the vehicle chassis. The main reference dimensions for checking are shown in Fig. 8–4.

Damage to car body can be very different. Therefore, the repair rules in each individual case must be different, most suitable for these damages, and it is necessary to make maximum use of the possibilities of straightening damaged panels. If possible, it is necessary to avoid thermal effects on the metal so as not to disrupt the factory welding and anti-corrosion protection of the body. Remove the front body panels only in extreme cases, to determine the location of damage, straighten or align the body.

In cases of significant body damage, it is recommended to remove all interior trim to facilitate measurement, inspection and installation of hydraulic and screw jacks to correct distortion and damage to the body.

Protrusion of the front surfaces and removable parts relative to adjacent panels is eliminated by fitting and adjusting them.

Repair of deformed surfaces of parts

Repair of damaged body parts is carried out by drawing, straightening, straightening with metal shrinkage, cutting out areas that cannot be repaired, making repair inserts from rejected body parts or sheet metal and giving them the shape of the part being restored.

Deformed areas of panels are straightened, as a rule, manually using special tools (metal, plastic, wooden hammers and various mandrels) and devices.

Straightening with heating is used for upsetting (pulling) highly stretched surfaces of panels. To prevent sudden swelling and deterioration of mechanical properties, the panels are heated to 600–650 C (cherry-red color). The diameter of the heated spot should be no more than 20–30 mm.

Tighten the surfaces as follows:

– using a carbon electrode of a semi-automatic welding machine or a gas torch, heat the metal from the periphery to the center of the defective area and, with blows of a wooden mallet and hammer, knock down the heated areas using a flat support or an anvil;

– repeat the heating and settling operations until the required panel surface is obtained.

Unevenness in panels can be smoothed out using polyester putties, thermoplastics, cold-curing epoxy mastics and solder.

Polyester putties such as “Chempropol-P” or “PE-0085” form reliable connections with panels that have been stripped to metal. They are two-component materials: an unsaturated polyester resin and a hardener, which is a catalyst for the rapid hardening of the mixture. The temperature in the workroom should not be lower than 18 C. The prepared polyester putty must be used in no more than 10 minutes. It completely hardens 60 minutes after application. The thickness of the putty layer should not exceed 2 mm.

How to make a screed:

  1. We heat the metal from the edge to the center of the damaged part using a gas stove or a semi-automatic welding machine with a carbon electrode. When the area heats up, we begin to bring it down with a wooden hammer. When doing this, use a flat stand.
  2. We repeat this operation several times until the required surface is obtained.
  3. You may not line up without flaws right away, but don't despair. These defects can be hidden using putty, thermoplastic or epoxy putty.

Body geometry dimensions of VAZ 2110 and 2112

VAZ 2110 cars that leave the factory assembly line have clearly verified body dimensions. However, few people pay attention to them when buying. As a rule, a driver begins to become interested in the dimensions of the body of his car in the following cases:

  1. There are plans to buy a car of this brand second-hand, but the buyer wants to make sure that the vehicle has not been in an accident before. Body geometry will help answer this question.

The resulting design can now be installed in a car. When installing, the standard self-tapping screws for attaching the sidewalls to the body must be replaced with M5 bolts. In order for the acoustic shelf to sit firmly on the sides, it is best to use Velcro (see photo below).

Length

The geometry of the VAZ 2110 body is described in the operating instructions. The main parameters for checking body geometry are as follows:

  1. There should be 4.265 meters between the extreme points of the front bumper and the rear bumper.
  2. The distance between the center of the front wheel and the center of the corresponding rear wheel is 2.492 meters.
  3. The distance from the center of the front wheel to the end point of the front bumper is 0.829 meters.
  4. The distance from the center of the rear wheel to the end point of the rear bumper should be 0.944 meters.

The height of the car is always stationary - 1420 mm


You should try to avoid welding and other work that involves thermal heating of the metal.

Use of thermoplastic.

What does thermoplastic look like? It looks like powder. It begins to have the desired properties at 155-165 C. Before applying thermoplastic to the surface, it is necessary to clean the area of ​​old paint, rust and other debris. Thermoplastic adheres better to rougher surfaces.

Next, we heat the part of the metal panel that we will level to a temperature of 170-190 C. We roll out the applied thermoplastic (powder) with a metal roller. Apply the next layer, roll it up and so on until all irregularities are eliminated.

Width

  1. The distance between the end points of the side mirrors is 1875 mm.
  2. The distance between the front end points of the car (excluding side mirrors) is 1680 mm.
  3. The distance from the center of the right front wheel to the center of the left is 1400 mm.
  4. The distance from the center of the right rear wheel to the center of the left is 1370 mm.

When measuring the body geometry, remember that the body geometry of the VAZ 2112 differs in many places from the VAZ 2110.

Doors

It is also recommended to disassemble them and replace them with an assistant. If electrical equipment is attached to them, then the wires must be removed without fail. It should also be remembered that in case of replacement, it is recommended to transfer all removable parts from the old door to the new one.

This is how the doors on a VAZ 2110 are disassembled:

  • The 2 bolts connecting the door to the A-pillar are disconnected;
  • The door opens;
  • The new door is installed in the reverse order.
  • The bolts securing the upper and lower hinges are turned;

Advice. Before the bolted hinges are fully tightened, the door must be slammed shut and adjusted to even out the gaps in the openings along the entire edge. Then you will need to open the door with decorations and tighten the latches all the way. It is advisable to double-check everything. If something goes wrong, the door lock has already been adjusted.

Geometry check

Here are four main types of measurements that will allow you to make sure that the car has not been in an accident and has the parameters you need:

  1. Reconciliation of diagonals. Before proceeding with detailed calculations, you should make two simple measurements that will immediately identify the problem. The car needs to be measured diagonally on both sides. If the measurement results coincide (with an accuracy of a millimeter), this will mean that the body as a whole has the correct shape. But we should not stop at these two dimensions.
  2. Checking the height of the racks. To take this measurement, you need to measure the height of the racks in four places. It is important to take measurements from the front and rear, as well as from both sides of the machine. The four indicators must match.
  3. Identification of a distorted roof plane. To find out if your car's lid is in place, take measurements from the door diagonals. You need to measure from the bottom rear corner of the door to the top front corner, and vice versa. If the indicators coincide on both sides, good. Just in case, it’s worth checking the roof diagonals.

What putties should I use?

I recommend using “Chempropol-P”, it consists of two components: saturated polyester resin and hardener. This putty adheres well to panels. Such work must be carried out at temperatures above 19 C. The putty must be applied very quickly, since after 10 minutes it begins to harden. After an hour, the putty will completely harden. And the moment! The layer of polyester putty should not exceed 2 millimeters. By the way, if you don’t find this putty, you can still use “PE-0085”; it is very similar in composition and quality.

VAZ 2112 geometric body dimensions and their meaning

The VAZ 2112 or “two-piece” car was produced, like its analogues, at the Volzhsky Automobile Plant. It is a 5-door hatchback body, reminiscent of the VAZ 2110 sedan in shape.

Production of the “twelve” began in the 99th year of the last century. The car body was copied from the VAZ 2110, but shortened to 4170 mm. The volume of the luggage compartment is 400 liters. Due to the shortening of the body, the car, compared to the “ten”, began to respond better to turning the steering wheel.

And in general, the model has a sportier character than the VAZ 2110. Combining all the advantages of the “ten”, the VAZ 2112 is also equipped with the rear seat of the 2111 station wagon.

The clear improvements over previous models are as follows:

Coupe, station wagon, sedan, hatchback - the “two-piece” was equipped with all these body types. The coupe is more correctly called a 3-door hatchback. Cracks in the side members

Car wings are no less susceptible to deformation. These parts themselves are not very strong, and if they collide in a serious accident, they are severely deformed. Radiator frame

According to experts, replacing a TV with a “ten” is much easier than with a “nine” or other models previously produced by AvtoVAZ. This is due to the simplicity of the design of the “ten” radiator frame.

The TV is attached to the body using soldering points. They are located in 4 places: the radiator frame is fixed at the junction with the wing reinforcements (“arrows”) and with the spars. To disassemble the TV, it will be enough to drill points in these places and then cut with a sharp chisel.

Advice. In the process of removing the TV, it is possible to disassemble the radiator itself, only in this case you must remember to disconnect the radiator pipes.

After installing the new radiator frame, the weld areas will need to be thoroughly cleaned with an abrasive wheel and putty. Where the chassis touches the body, sealant must be applied.

VAZ-2111 is the first station wagon of the Volga Automobile Plant with front-wheel drive. Production started in 1998.

The VAZ-2111 with a five-door station wagon body is positioned as a family car, adapted for various needs. Like its predecessors, it was considered extremely convenient for summer residents and those who often need to transport not very large, but voluminous loads. The steering column on the VAZ-2111 is adjustable. Rear disc brakes can significantly reduce the braking distance of the car. All components and assemblies of the car are designed specifically to operate under different temperature conditions (in the range from -40°C to +45'C). To increase comfort, the BSK and SAUO systems are installed in the car.

As standard, the VAZ-2111 can be equipped with two families of engines: with a multi-point fuel mixture injection control system (each cylinder is equipped with its own nozzle) or with an electronic ignition system.

The 1.5-litre engine is capable of delivering 56kW of power and 118Nm of torque, which is also combined with economical petrol consumption. Another 16-valve engine with a twin-shaft cylinder head of 1.5 liters produces a power output of 69 kW and a torque of 130 Nm. This option makes the VAZ-2111 more dynamic. But also more gluttonous. The weight of the eleventh model is 20 kg more than that of the tenth, but the smoothness of movement has improved significantly.

The VAZ-2111 comes off the assembly line in three types: the basic VAZ-2111 (engine with a fuel injection system), VAZ-21111 (engine with a carburetor) and VAZ-21113 (equipped with a 16-valve engine, 14-inch wheels).

The basic VAZ-2111 had a sedan version, labeled as VAZ-21102. It had a VAZ-2111 engine, the volume of which was 1.5 liters. The VAZ-21111 brand is equipped with a VAZ-21083 engine with a displacement of 1.5 liters. The VAZ-21113 has a 16-valve VAZ-2112 engine and a modernized brake system (similar to the VAZ-21103 sedan).

A modification of the eleventh model VAZ-2111-90 (Tarzan 2) is a powerful all-wheel drive off-road vehicle. The engine, transmission and chassis in it correspond to the VAZ-21213 model.

The VAZ-2111 has three types of standard equipment: standard, norm and luxury, labeled as VAZ-21110-00 (standard) and VAZ-21113-00 (standard), VAZ-21110-01 (norm) and VAZ-21113-01 (standard), VAZ-21110-02 (luxury) and VAZ-21113-02 (luxury).

What's under the plastic?

It should be remembered that visible damage is sometimes not the only defect that occurs as a result of an accident. Let's take the front bumper for example. Firstly, the everyday concept of “bumper” is actually much more complex than it seems. What many are accustomed to mean by this definition consists of a bumper cover (painted plastic), a honeycomb filler (it is invisible from the outside and acts as a damper), an amplifier (its purpose is clear from the name), and various fasteners.


The owner of a car sometimes simply does not know its design. In this regard, surprises are possible, sometimes not entirely pleasant. For example, what you are used to calling a bumper is actually nothing more than a plastic trim (in fact, that’s what it’s called in the list of spare parts). Thus, minor damage to the plastic may cause the need to change not only the bumper cover, but also the filler and, for example, the tank. This comes as a surprise to those who have roughly estimated the cost of repairs by eye, adding the price of a new trim to the costs of painting and installing it.

Replacing the entire bottom

In case of significant damage, the bottom is often replaced entirely; replacement in this case is more profitable than repair:

  • purchasing one large integral part ends up being cheaper than purchasing all the spare parts separately;
  • the overall amount of work involved in replacing the bottom is less than repairing it;
  • no need to waste time thoroughly cleaning the metal from rust or removing old sound insulation;
  • You can completely replace the bottom quite simply, without welding, by drilling out the rivets and then installing new fasteners.

If you are going to use an automatic welding machine, when replacing the body floor, you must remove the fuel tank; failure to comply with safety precautions can lead to a fire or even an explosion. And although the work of replacing a one-piece body element at first glance seems quite simple, there are some nuances here - on the new factory bottom there are no studs, a bracket for the handbrake cable, or other fasteners that will need to be rearranged from the old floor.

Tuning

VAZ-2112 is one of the best solutions of the Russian automobile industry. The car has little comfort. However, many people strive to highlight their vehicle through tuning. Nowadays, tuning has become very popular, especially for domestic cars. Due to the fact that manufacturers have reduced the body size, the hatchback has become more comfortable to drive.

The last advice remains not entirely correct. Most people inspect the thresholds before each trip, and those who are negligent about their car will be forced to drive a rusty car or spend significant money on restoring the body.

Modifications of VAZ 2106

VAZ-21061 - VAZ-2103 engine with a volume of 1500 cm3. Initially, this index was supposed to denote a special version for Canada, which included being equipped with special bumpers - aluminum, without fangs, with linings and ends made of black plastic.

VAZ-21062 is an export modification of the VAZ-2106 with right-hand drive.

VAZ-21064 is an export modification of the VAZ-21061 with right-hand drive.

VAZ-21065 is a modernized modification with improved equipment, produced in 1990 - 2001. It differed from the base model by a more powerful generator, a five-speed gearbox, a rear axle gearbox with a gear ratio of 3.9, a contactless ignition system, a Solex carburetor (21053-1107010), halogen headlights, seat upholstery and headrests, as well as a standard rear fog lamp and electrically heated rear window. Equipment 21065-01 was equipped with an engine from model 2103.

Due to the galvanized bodies of the “ten,” there was a lot of noise during their release, however, if you walk down the street, you can notice rust and even through holes in the thresholds of the cars. There are owners of fresh 2112s, and not only this model of the 10th family, who decided not to apply anti-corrosion treatment to their galvanized body. For this reason, the bottom of such cars quickly became covered with rust.

The twelfth model turned out to be 93 millimeters shorter than the “sedan” version. The docking affected only the rear overhang area, but the wheelbase of the two cars is the same. If we compare domestically assembled vehicles represented by the “chisel” and the VAZ classic, the twelfth model has good aerodynamics even by today’s standards.

The drag is 0.3. Since 2003, small-scale assembly of the VAZ-21123 began, which differs from the standard version by a 3-door body. The doors of the VAZ-21123 are 200 millimeters longer than those of the standard twelfth model. The Lada 21122 car had an eight-valve engine and 13-inch wheels, and a more powerful version came with a sixteen-valve power plant and 14-inch wheels.

It is important to note that in addition to the 3-door body, the VAZ 21123 received more developed wheel arches, so tuning enthusiasts are allowed to install even 15-inch stylish “rollers” on the car. If we take into account the Lada Kalina, then it is classified as division B, but the 10th division and the twelfth model in particular tends to belong to class C.

VAZ 2112 is 320 millimeters longer in length than the same Lada Kalina hatchback. However, the dimensions of the domestic hatchback do not allow it to completely fit into the grown-up modern Golf class. It’s a little unusual and even unpleasant that the company decided to install a cooling radiator under the air intakes of the nose bumper, which for some reason did not receive additional protection.

Quite often, the following happens: a stone gets into the radiator, pierces it and causes a leak. They decided to leave the front part of the “two-piece” unchanged. The headlights included mounting lenses. A hood mounted on 2 shock absorbers was simply chic in the Soviet automotive industry at that time. The sides of the hood overlapped the sides, and the hood itself had complex bends, which made its release a little difficult.

The side part of the Lada 2112 turned out to be really fast and sporty. The side is a little slick, has molded bumpers and thoughtful aerodynamics. Everyone has been accustomed to the design of this car for a long time. We cannot talk about whether he is handsome or not, since this is already part of our life. Absolutely any domestic driver will recognize this vehicle.

After its first release, most people thought it was a foreign car. Everyone felt good about the design, but today the VAZ 2112 has many competitors. People have already forgotten about this car, but in terms of design it is in no way inferior to modern foreign cars.

From the very beginning, the car, both externally and internally, was conceived as a sports version of the standard 2110. Trying to standardize the cars in the same way, it was decided to leave the rear lights as they were, the then fashionable strip running across the entire rear. The spoiler that was placed on the rear door is not a design whim, but rather a necessity. It appeared due to the occurrence of lifting force during movement.

Although the VAZ-2112 car has not been produced for a long time, it can be seen quite often on the streets of many cities in the post-Soviet space. The car was able to prove itself well, especially at the beginning of production. Many even mistook this hatchback for a foreign car. Even today, the car does not have such a rough design as, for example, the “nine” or similar cars, and even looks modern.

If the driver does not leave his car unattended, it will look good. “Dvenashka” received an average ground clearance, front-wheel drive, a more or less good interior and a spacious trunk. It is clear that the model cannot compete with foreign cars, but for its price it is the best option.

It is especially suitable for tuning lovers, as it has a lot of opportunities for improving the appearance, interior and technical parts. It will not be possible to avoid a poor-quality interior and low level of noise insulation. Also inside, especially in the back row, there is not enough free space. Creaking sounds will constantly accompany the driver on the road.

The power of the power plants is not always enough; the lack of power is mainly felt when overtaking. But the engine can be called quite economical, even in urban areas. The VAZ 2112, although not an ideal car, is good for a first car, as it has a low cost on the secondary market, low price tags for spare parts and is easy to repair.
