Error code p0120 - decoding, finding and eliminating the causes

Trouble code P0120 indicates a malfunction in the throttle/pedal position sensor/switch “A” circuit.

This error is common to all modern cars, including Toyota Corolla, Renault Logan, Mitsubishi Lancer 9, Mercedes w203, Nissan Almera and others.

The error is not critical, so you can operate the car, but based on the fact that signs of the problem are floating engine speed, decreased dynamics and jerking of the car, low speed (up to 50 km/h), increased fuel consumption, we can come to the conclusion that The malfunction must be eliminated as soon as possible.

The diagnostic procedure is suitable for all of the above car brands, so, as an example, we will focus only on the Toyota Corolla. But more on that later.

Throttle sensor operation

The sensor records the angle of the throttle valve, this is its main task. It works on a non-contact principle based on the Hall effect. The device can be found directly on the throttle body.

This design solution played a decisive role in the reliability of the device and the accuracy of the measurements it transmitted.

The throttle valve sensor (TDS) also has another designation TP or TPS according to the English abbreviation. It can be with mechanical and electrical drives.

The operation of the remote sensing sensor is ensured by two complementary circuits - VTA1 and VTA2.

The voltage of the signal coming from the first circuit, depending on the throttle valve position angle, changes, thereby the ECU understands what position the throttle valve is in at a certain point in time.

The VTA2 circuit is the monitoring circuit and ensures that there are no failures in the first circuit.

The range of voltage readings supplied from the sensor to the ECU, depending on the car model, may differ, but, as a rule, it is from 0 V (or 0.45) when the throttle is closed and up to 5 Volts when the throttle is fully open.

The ECU uses the received information to:

  1. Creating the correct air-fuel mixture at certain engine operating modes.
  2. Speed adjustments.
  3. Increased fuel supply.

Details in the video.

The first signs of a malfunction, how the car behaves

The electronics of most modern cars are specially configured in such a way that when error p0120 occurs and Check Engine appears on the dashboard, the engine goes into emergency mode.

The ECU controls the entire process. It programmatically turns on intermittent fuel supply and adjusts the ignition timing, thereby reducing engine power.

Next, the damper, due to the action of the return spring, is installed at an angle of 6 (6.5) degrees and does not change its position until the problem is resolved.

As a rule, in emergency mode, after error p0120 appears, the car moves at a speed of no more than 50 km/h with the gas pedal depressed as much as possible.

Those. the engine does not develop speed, the car may jerk, and throttle response will be lost when you press the gas pedal.

This mode of engine operation will remain until the breakdown that caused this error is found and repaired. To do this, you will have to diagnose the machine using a scanner, multimeter and a number of other measures.

How does a mechanic diagnose a P0120 code?

When diagnosing this error, the mechanic will do the following:

  • Reads all stored data and error codes using an OBD-II scanner to find out when and under what circumstances the P0120
  • Clear error codes from the computer's memory and test drive the vehicle to see if P0120 appears again
  • Visually inspect the electrical wires and connectors related to the throttle position sensor “A” for looseness or damage.
  • Compare the readings of throttle position sensors “A” and “B” using a scanner and, if necessary, replace the faulty sensor

Error Conditions

The VTA1 circuit constantly transmits a signal to the ECU. Error p0120 will occur when the voltage in the circuit, with the throttle valve open, goes outside the standard range (0 to 5 volts) within a certain time interval.

The system is configured in such a way that only one error is recorded per trip.

The voltage and time interval readings for each car model, for example, Renault Logan and Mitsubishi Lancer 9, may differ, but not by much.

Let’s take, for example, a Toyota Corolla whose sensor produces a standard voltage of 0 to 5 Volts.

If the accelerator pedal is completely released, it is 0.5-1.1 V, if it is fully depressed - 3.3-4.9 V. We are talking about the VTA1 circuit.

If the voltage is below 0 or more than 5 volts for 2 or more seconds, the system will generate error p0120.

Very often, this error occurs when driving on mountain roads, when the car is overloaded, the gas pedal is pressed hard and the engine runs for a long time at high speeds.

With fault code P0120, you can sometimes encounter other errors. The most common ones are: P0110, P0115, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0124, P0220, P0300, P0340, P0420, P1122, P1410, P1516, P1550, P1705, P2135, B0136, B1421, B1431.

Existing error options

There are four types of error p0120.

When diagnosing, the scanning program designates them as follows:

Symptoms of P0120

  • The controller turns on the Check Engine Light and enters fail-safe mode, limiting current to the throttle actuator to open the throttle valve approximately 6 degrees.
  • RPM drops when accelerating.
  • Floating idle speed.
  • The car may move very slowly and respond poorly to the gas.
  • Idle speed may be higher than normal.
  • In some cases, the engine may not start.

Reasons for the error

Causes of error p0120:

  1. Broken wires going directly from the sensor to the ECU.
  2. Oxidation of contacts in connectors.
  3. Damage to the sensor itself. Short circuit, break in the electrical circuit of the device.
  4. Damage and deformation of the throttle body. Since the sensor is internal, this may affect its operation.
  5. ECU malfunction. A software or electronics failure can cause a false signal to be output to the instrument panel.
  6. Malfunction of the ECM engine control module.
  7. PCM malfunction. A combined control module consisting of an engine control unit (ECU) and a transmission control module (TCM).
  8. The valve is dirty or a foreign object has entered it.
  9. The battery is low.

There are other possible causes that are rare and can only be diagnosed by experienced specialists.

Additional comments for troubleshooting P0120

  • Along with the P0120 , there may also be other error codes related to the throttle position sensor that need to be investigated and resolved.
  • The most common cause of P0120 is a faulty throttle position sensor that is not properly detecting the throttle angle.
  • As a rule, when errors related to the throttle position sensor appear, emergency mode is activated, and the symptoms of such errors are almost the same.

Diagnostics and troubleshooting

Despite the fact that the throttle position sensor is a simple device in its design, it is located directly in the throttle assembly, which complicates its diagnosis and makes it impossible to remove it as a separate element and replace it.

If your car has a throttle body (RC) with mechanical control via a cable, then you can remove and replace the sensor without replacing the entire remote control.

Inspection of the throttle valve assembly

Deposits and contaminants built up on and around the throttle valve, as well as foreign objects, can cause the P0120 code. All this can be revealed by visual inspection.

To remove contaminants, use a regular carburetor cleaner. This is not a difficult task even for an inexperienced driver.

It would also be a good idea to remove the intake air manifold and check the condition of the gaskets and O-rings. If necessary, replace them and seal them with sealant.

If after removing all contamination, error p0120 does not disappear, further diagnostics must be carried out. In rare cases, it all ends with a complete replacement of the throttle assembly.

  • Let's summarize

As practice shows, error p0120 often occurs due to contamination of the throttle valve assembly and the presence of a carburetor cleaner will be sufficient to solve the problem.

Replacing the throttle assembly, ECU and other modules is most likely the exception rather than the rule. In most cases, cleaning the throttle valve, cleaning the connector contacts, and eliminating broken wiring is sufficient to fix the problem.

And remember, p0120 is not critical, but you won’t be able to get 100% of its capabilities from the car. Therefore, you will have to look for and eliminate the causes of the error in any case.
