Do-it-yourself complete and partial oil change in automatic transmission AL4

If you regularly carry out the necessary technical work, you can significantly increase the service life of any unit. This statement is especially true with the AL-4 automatic transmission. It is this gearbox that is installed in the Peugeot 308. Most problems arise due to the lack of competent technical prevention.

Changing automatic transmission oil AL4/DP0/(DP2,DP8)

The most common automatic transmission in all French cars is the DP0 gearbox for Renault, it is also the AL4 in Peugeot/Citroen. In the new Renault DP0 was modified into DP2 and DP8, but the oil change procedure, as well as the need for regular oil changes, have not changed. And many owners of French cars are wondering whether to change the oil in their automatic transmission. After all, the manufacturer claims that oil is filled for the entire service life of this unit. In theory, while the car is new, all joints and assemblies have factory clearances, the bushings are not worn out, the oil is cleaned quite reliably by the filter... In practice, taking into account the operating conditions and urban driving conditions (constant stop-and-go), a chain reaction of wear often occurs. Thus, the older the unit, the greater the wear of the hardware components and the faster the oil becomes contaminated. It is no secret that this is accompanied by emergency overheating and overloads.

All transmissions with a heat exchanger in their design operate at temperatures close to critical. This box is no exception, and also has a heat exchanger for cooling the oil. In used cars, the heat exchanger gets clogged/clogged, which leads to constant overheating, which is why the valve body suffers. At the same time, there is a strainer in the box, but it is changed only when removing and disassembling the machine; replacing it along with changing the oil or replacing valve body solenoids will not work.

We advise you not to test the box for strength, and to completely change the automatic transmission oil every 40-50 thousand km or partially every 20-25 thousand km. It also makes sense to install an additional cooling radiator along with a thermostat instead of a heat exchanger.

The oil this box is designed for is Dexron-III quality. The recommended Citroen/Peugeot fluid is Mobil LT 71141 (semi-synthetic) and works well in this box. The recommended fluid for Renault is Elf D3 Syn (Synthetic). There is also a synthetic fluid option from Total - Fluide XLD FE .

A full (new) oil fill in an automatic transmission is about 7 liters.

How many partial changes will be required to obtain a 100% oil change?

So, what do we need for a partial replacement? During the work, approximately 3 liters of oil are drained, but you need to fill in 0.5 liters more to check the oil level in the machine. Therefore, for a partial replacement, 4 liters of oil will be enough. The cost of the work will be 800 rubles*.

A complete change will require 10 to 12 liters of oil. You will definitely need gaskets for the oil heat exchanger, which cost approximately 475-644 rubles* for 2 gaskets. Additionally, we recommend using an automatic transmission flush from Magneti Marelli, which costs 931 rubles*. The cost of the work will be 2000 rubles*. (*Prices shown are current at the time of writing).

We carry out a complete replacement using a proprietary Magneti Marelli device using special adapters.

It is clear what is required for a partial and complete automatic transmission oil change (the prices shown are current at the time of writing)

After carrying out the work, the oil aging counter should be reset . During this procedure, a new counter value is specified. You can either completely reset it to zero or set an intermediate value for a partial oil change. According to the automaker's recommendations, when updating every 0.5 liters of oil, 2750 points should be deducted. To perform this, you need to connect a diagnostic device, which costs 850 rubles*. At the same time, if you wish, you can simultaneously read the errors on the machine. Don't forget to notify the receptionist about this.

Operation scheme and level normalization

To change the oil, you need to get to the drain plug, and this requires removing the engine crankcase protection. To dismantle the protection you will need a socket wrench or x10 socket. Removing the mounting bolts will be significantly easier if you use a ratchet wrench when unscrewing.

  1. the engine warms up on a flat surface to operating temperature until the main radiator cooling fan comes on, then turn it off
  2. the external drain plug of the gearbox is unscrewed and about 100 grams of fluid is drained if the level is normal
  3. the internal plastic plug for the level is unscrewed and about 3 liters of liquid are drained
  4. screw the internal plastic plug of the control hole to normalize the level with a torque of 1 ± 0.1
  5. screw in the outer drain plug with a torque of 4.8 ± 0.5
  6. first clean the filler plug with a special cleaner from dust and dirt, then unscrew it
  7. 3.5 liters of oil are poured in and the filler plug is screwed in with a new sealing gasket with a torque of 4 ± 0.4
  8. start the engine and warm it up to operating temperature until the main radiator cooling fan starts working
  9. do not turn off the engine and unscrew only the external drain plug to normalize the level
  10. As soon as the excess oil is drained in a thin stream to the point of droplets, close the outer drain plug, the engine should be running, now the level is normal
  11. turn off the engine, after 100-150 km we will repeat the operation to change the oil in the automatic transmission box

Read on for a detailed description of changing automatic transmission oil and at the end of the post find out how to check the level.

Additional operations before removing protection

Before removing the crankcase protection, it is recommended to treat all fasteners with a rust preventative, such as WD-40 or similar. This is necessary for easier recoil of the fastening bolts, since in most cases, on used cars, they become sour and problems arise with unscrewing them, and as a result, the threads can be “broken.”

When installing the protection in its place, it is recommended to first clean the bolts from dirt and rust with a metal brush and treat all bolts with a temporary thread locker, which protects the threads from corrosion and facilitates subsequent disassembly. Plus, the clamp keeps the bolts from unscrewing during vibration, maintaining the reliability of the connection.

Draining old oil

After removing the protection, access to the drain neck, which is closed with a plug, opens. To release the cork you will need a square key - 4x4 mm. In this video, in the absence of a branded square wrench, a homemade wrench was made to the size of a square, for which an extension for a socket wrench was used as a blank.

Before changing the oil in the automatic transmission, it is recommended to drive a certain distance to warm up the engine and gearbox to operating temperature in order to easily drain the fluid. The engine warms up in place until the electric fan for cooling the radiator turns on. To remove suspended contaminants in the oil, be sure to drain it from the gearbox while “burning” at a temperature not lower than 60'C (+8; -2) degrees.

Before removing the drain plug, you need to prepare a container for the old oil. Be careful when doing this as the oil is hot. After the oil stops flowing from the box, you need to use an x8 hexagon to insert another plug through the drain hole.

After the second plug is released, some more oil will drain out. When handing over the second plug, you must act carefully, without exerting much effort or jerking when unscrewing it, since the plug is made of plastic and is easily damaged.

The filling capacity of an empty gearbox is approximately 7 liters. As a result, after draining, it turned out to be about three liters; the oil is not completely drained; about 4 liters remain in the torque converter.

Refilling with new oil

Before filling the automatic transmission with new oil, you must tighten both drain plugs. The inner plastic plug is wrapped first, as mentioned above, without applying much effort, simply reaches its stop along the thread.

Then the second plug is screwed in. The external plug has a gasket in the form of a ring, which is recommended to be changed every time the automatic transmission oil is changed. To fill the box with new oil, you need to remove the filler plug, for which on some cars you need to remove the battery.

Before releasing the plug, it must be cleaned of dirt so that when filling with oil, dirt does not get into the automatic transmission crankcase. Since the plug is located in a place that is not entirely accessible, it is convenient to do this using, for example, a carburetor cleaner in an aerosol can, as in Oleg Zuev’s video.

Video Oleg Zuyeff 1

The filler plug is turned away in the same square as the external drain plug of the automatic transmission.
For a partial replacement, you will need about 4 liters of transmission oil and a funnel with an extension tube for easy filling of oil. Reminder! Before you start filling the oil, make sure once again that you do not forget to put the drain plugs in place! Since the extension tube on the filler funnel is of small diameter, the process of adding oil to the automatic transmission is quite lengthy and you need to be patient. Fill in 3.5 liters of oil.

After filling the oil, the plug is screwed into place. The plug also has a copper o-ring - a gasket that must be replaced every time you fill up with oil. If you removed the battery, install it in place, connect the terminals and you can start the car to check the oil level.

How to check the oil level and drain excess

To check the oil level in an automatic transmission, you will need a small flat container and a tetrahedron to release the automatic transmission plugs. The vehicle for testing is placed on a level surface, the engine is started and the ELF RENAULTMATIC D3 automatic transmission oil is warmed up to a temperature of at least 60'C (+8; -2) degrees.

Do-it-yourself complete and partial oil change in automatic transmission AL4

Today we will talk about changing the oil in an automatic transmission from the French manufacturer al4. In Russia it is also called DP0. This four-speed transmission has features in the form of knocks and noises that the manufacturers have not corrected. Automatic transmission was born in 1999. Then the Peugeot-Citroen plant finalized and released a new version of DP2, DP 8. Compared to the latest transmissions, this automatic transmission can last 250,000 or more kilometers with proper care.

REPAIR OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT AL4

    Never disable:
  • battery with the engine running,
  • computer with the ignition on.
    Before connecting the connector, check:
  • state of contacts (deformation, oxidation, etc.),
  • presence and condition of fixing mechanical elements.
    When monitoring electrical equipment:
  • the battery must be fully charged,
  • never use a power source with a voltage higher than 16 volts,
  • Never use an electric lamp as a probe.

Spare parts for Al4 automatic transmissions are publicly available at low prices. You can also easily find a contract machine if your original one is out of order forever.

Attention! The Al4 automatic transmission is designed only for original oil, which is based on Dexron III standards.

Write in the comments if you have a car with an Al4 automatic transmission and what problems do you experience during operation?

One box of many titles

In 1999, the Peugeot-Citroen Association (PSA) together with Renault launched their first production 4-speed automatic DP0 (aka AL4 ).

The AL4 automatic transmission is designed for front-wheel drive and engines from 1.4 to 2 liters. There are many options differing in drive gears and housing. The designers report that the DP0 AL4 can transmit torque up to 210 Nm. But the manufacturers configured the box so that the transmitted torque does not reach the maximum values. Thus, by forcibly reducing the capabilities of the box, we increased the life expectancy of the rear cover and extended the mileage until overhaul by over 150-200 thousand km.

AL4-DP0 automatic transmission is a unique and very successful development. Its design is simple and rational. Reviews from owners speak of the reliability of the box as an indestructible automatic transmission, but of course, any mechanism can be destroyed with evil force. In addition, due to its ingenious simplicity, the AL4-DP0 has a low cost. Thanks to these advantages, more than 1 million cars with the DP automatic have been sold. A huge advantage is also the maintainability of this automatic transmission. This is one of the most studied (relatively) easy to repair among automatic transmissions.

calls this automatic transmission “ AL4 ”, but in Russia it is known as DP0.

In 2013, based on DP0, new modifications of the AL4 adaptive automatic transmission were released directly for Russia, now with the Porsche Tiptronic System. At the same time, the design of the machine has remained virtually unchanged. Renault named these two modifications: DP2 - for front-wheel drive cars and DP8 - for all-wheel drive. The electrics have been updated, the settings for the operation of the torque converter have been changed, which turns on already at first speed. At the same time, the DP2 and DP8 blocking lasts longer and is more reliable, thanks to the use of ZF components. The repair kit for consumables DP0 is almost completely suitable for DP8 , only the oil seal for the right axle shaft is missing.

Practical advice on choosing oil in an AL4 automatic transmission

To change the oil to Al4, you need to approach this with the utmost seriousness. The automatic transmission only likes the Dexron III standard. And various cheap fakes will lead to a quick overhaul of the already capricious box from the French.

Please note that an older device requires frequent replacement and is most in need of the original fluid.

Original oil

Use mineral based oil. For example, Ravenol ATF Dexron III. They are sold in four-liter cans. One bottle is enough for a partial oil change in Al4.

Buy oil only in specialized stores. This way you will avoid fakes.

Write in the comments what oils do you use to change transmission fluid in Al4?

Analogs

If mineral oil for Al4 cannot be found in the owner’s city, then the following types are suitable:

Use them only if you really don't have the original. Change the Al4 filter device along with the liquid. Do not forget to blow air through the radiator so that the cooling system always operates properly.

AL4 box malfunctions

Despite the positive reviews and popularity of the transmission, the AL4 automatic transmission has inherent vulnerabilities. The problems observed in the mechanism usually occur in most boxes of this type.

  • A dull knock and jolts when starting. Symptoms occur when you start driving without first warming up the box. The reason for this manifestation lies in the difference in oil pressure indicators. The data used by the computer to calculate the required modes does not coincide with the actual characteristics. Cause: faulty pressure regulator in the valve plate. In addition, a possible reason is an insufficient level of transmission fluid, and a violation of the tightening torques of the bolts that secure the valve body.

To eliminate the defect, check whether oil is leaking into the AL4 automatic transmission, analyze the condition of the heat exchanger, replace the lubricant, remove the hydraulic unit and change the valves. If the mileage of the box is over 100,000 km, a full service will be required, including dismantling, disassembling, washing, and the valve plate. In the future, the stove will need to be adjusted and adjusted. After completing the work, the car’s on-board computer is reconfigured and cleaned.

Pressure regulator No. 144431:

  • Gears are switched with a delay. The breakdown is accompanied by jamming of the rocker lever in the “P” position. Sometimes, on the contrary, the rocker switches from a position without applying pressure to the brake pedal. As a rule, the culprit of non-standard behavior is a faulty brake sensor.

To fix the problem, change the limit switch, check and replace the damaged electrical harness of the switch.

Brake pedal limit switch:

  • Knocks and jolts when the car is moving, error messages flashing. The behavior manifests itself in moving vehicles, both warm and cold gearboxes fail. An increase in the number of revolutions is often observed, although the gear shift does not occur; the car’s clutch seems to be slipping.

The reason lies in the breakdown of the valve that controls the blocking of the hydraulic transformer, as well as in the hydraulic valve, which is responsible for the correct pressure in the hydraulic unit.

Important! If such symptoms occur, stop using the car. Further driving on a faulty vehicle may cause the brake of the hydraulic transformer to break.

To fix the problem, the automatic transmission is checked for transmission fluid leaks, the heat exchanger is checked, and the hydraulic unit is dismantled and the valves are replaced. In addition, it is necessary to completely replace the ATF fluid in the transmission. Severe wear and mileage of the box over 100,000 km indicates the advisability of replacing the hydraulic unit with a new one. The work is accompanied by subsequent loading of a new program into the vehicle’s on-board computer.

  • Switching the backstage is accompanied by the absence of an indicator of the selected mode on the vehicle's information display. Symptoms are observed mainly when switching the backstage from the parking mode to the reverse driving mode, as well as when switching the backstage from the standard mode to the neutral mode.

The cause of AL4 automatic transmission malfunction lies in the breakdown of the gearbox switch. In addition, this behavior is typical when the device settings fail or the sector responsible for selecting gears in the AL4 box fails. Another possible reason is the selector cable, which is loosely secured in the bracket and constantly jumps out of it.

The switch may malfunction due to moisture, manufacturing defects, or severe wear. Elimination comes down to replacing or adjusting the above listed parts.

The problems described are often encountered when operating the AL4/DP0 gearbox. The problems are characterized by an indirect manifestation and can be observed during any period of use of the box, regardless of the mileage.

Gearbox commutator:

Checking the level

The Al4 automatic transmission, as I already said, does not like oil starvation. Therefore, I recommend checking the lubricant level in the box every 10,000 kilometers. Unfortunately, the machine does not have a probe for easy checking. Therefore, the procedure will proceed as follows:

Have you already checked the level yourself on the Al4 box? Or do you take the car to experienced mechanics in such cases?

Switching modes, AL4 box rocker

The gearbox slide is located in the central part of the cabin. Purpose, selection of the desired mode by influencing a special contactor device and a spool that switches hydraulic modes. The slide is equipped with six positions; switching occurs by moving the selector panel along the slot in the stream.

Gear selector positions:

  • P - parking mode, transmission is locked, starting the power plant is possible;
  • R — reverse mode, when turned on, the reverse lights light up at the same time;
  • N - neutral mode, starting the power plant is possible;
  • D — automatic adaptation mode “Drive”, shifting forward gears from first to fourth and back;
  • 3 – Automatic mode, limited to three gears (1-2-3 and back);
  • 2 – Automatic mode, limited to two gears (1-2 and back);

Modes "2" and "3" are automatically limited because they are computer controlled.

Important! To unlock the gear shift lever from the “P” position, you must turn on the ignition and press the brake pedal, “Shift-Lock” function.

The gearbox is equipped with a special mechanical protection mechanism that prevents damage to transmission parts when moving incorrectly from one shift position to another. The transition from the following provisions must occur through the provisions:

  • From "P" to "R";
  • From "R" to "P";
  • From "N" to "R";
  • From "D" to "N";
  • From "3" to "2".

In order to satisfy the driver's needs for driving with the use of additional speed modes, a software selector is structurally provided. The mechanism is equipped with three keys and is located on the side of the drawstring.

Gear shifter paired with program selector:

Selector programs:

  • Standard program (no keys pressed, slider in position “D”):

The program is considered the main one; when used, the computer analyzes the driving style and adapts it to the road conditions and vehicle load. The main goal is to achieve lower fuel consumption and optimal distribution of force;

  • Program “Sport” (key “S” pressed, rocker in position “D”):

Using the program involves automatic gear shifting, but the computer gives preference to a sporty style and does not pay attention to the amount of fuel consumed;

  • Program “Snow” (key “*” pressed, slide in position “D”):

Using the program, the computer adapts to slippery road surface conditions. Driving starts in second or third gear with infrequent downshifts. This mode allows you to reduce wear on the gearbox mechanisms and increase its service life;

  • First gear forced limitation mode (key “1” pressed, rocker in position “2”):

The gearbox will only operate in first gear.

Features of the “Shift Lock” program:

When moving the rocker to the “P” position without pressing the brake pedal, the automatic transmission selector will be locked. When the vehicle is stationary and the engine speed exceeds 2000 rpm, moving the lever to position “D” does not engage gears.

Important! When you turn off the ignition and then turn it back on, the computer automatically switches to the standard program.

Indication on the information board:

Materials for a comprehensive oil change in an AL4 automatic transmission

Pay attention to the quality of the drained fluid when checking the level. If the oil has a black tint with metallic inclusions, then it's time to replace it.

What materials do we need to change the Al 4 automatic transmission lubricant:

Once you have prepared all the tools, you can start changing the lubricant to Al 4 DP 0.

When is replacement needed?

Many novice drivers may be misled by the phrase contained in the official user manual, which states that the automatic transmission in this model is maintenance-free, that is, neither the oil nor the filter in it needs to be changed throughout the entire period of operation. But any car service employee will tell you that such statements are not entirely correct. Any lubricant, including gear oil, is always a consumable material. In any case, over time it becomes dirty, some of the oil evaporates, it loses its original characteristics, which increases the rate of wear of the rubbing parts of the transmission

Manufacturers, declaring that there is no need to change the oil in the gearbox, proceed from the fact that this procedure will not really be required during the car’s warranty service (3 years or 100 thousand km). But a car is not purchased for three years, even in very prosperous countries.

The second condition is that the car will be operated in a relatively gentle manner. In a metropolis, this is out of the question. Driving in traffic jams puts a lot of stress on the automatic transmission, since successive stops and starts prevent the normal supply of lubricant to the gearbox parts. In general, relying on speedometer readings is not a good idea. Changing the oil in a Citroen C4 automatic transmission in the absence of signs of automatic transmission malfunction is not only impractical, but even undesirable, since often in such cases the car begins to “stupid”, which was not noticed before.

The main symptoms indicating the need to change the oil in a maintenance-free Citroen C4 automatic transmission:

Do-it-yourself oil change in automatic transmission Al4

Write in the comments how you prepared to change the oil in the Al 4 automatic transmission of your car?

Changing the fluid in an automatic transmission consists of several stages. Each of them will be described in more detail in a block dedicated to one of the process steps.

Draining old oil

Let's start by draining the used fluid from the Al 4 automatic transmission. It is necessary to completely drain all the oil from the automatic transmission so that mixing does not occur.

It's time to clean the tray and magnets.

Washing the tray and removing chips

Rinse the Al 4 pan in kerosene or a special liquid that can be found in any auto store. Do not forget to remove the old gasket, and the place where it stood will need to be degreased.

Clean the Al 4 magnets from any metal shavings adhering to them. If these wear debris are not removed, they will quickly clog the new filter device.

After you set the pan to dry, you can proceed to replacing the filter on the Al 4 automatic transmission.

Replacing the filter

The procedure for replacing the filter will be as follows:

If the Al 4 gas turbine engine leaks lubricant, then I recommend immediately changing the Teflon o-rings. To do this, you will need to unscrew the rear cover bolts, remove and put back new small and large rings.

Filling with new oil

After you have replaced all the components with new ones, you need to begin installing the parts in the reverse order.

I have already written about how to check the amount of lubricant.

Have you already done a partial fluid change on the AL 4 automatic transmission yourself? How was the procedure? I will wait for your answer in the comments.

Complete replacement of transmission fluid in automatic transmission

If you have driven more than 60,000 thousand kilometers on your car, then it is time to do a complete change of the used fluid in the Al4 gearbox. This process is done by displacing the old lubricant with a newer one.

Its first steps are no different from the partial change procedure. Only at the end of the process is the connection to the high pressure washer added. However, if there is no such device, then you can call a partner and take a five-liter bottle. Further actions will be as follows:

This way you can completely replace the used fluid with fresh one without using a high-pressure apparatus. And the Al4 automatic transmission will be able to work again without errors.

Do not forget to adapt the machine after each oil change. This will help you avoid many of the vagaries of the box, which sometimes occur due to the fault of an unadapted automatic transmission. Because often owners simply don’t give a damn about “taming” the machine, and then complain that it doesn’t listen to them.

Write in the comments if you have already done a complete fluid change. Did it work?

Find out the car's history:

Electrical weaknesses of the AL4-DP0 automatic transmission:

Solenoid (ERS, the same -TSS) - electric pressure regulator (article 2574.16). Leader in replacements. With them, the plastic sealing rings (article 2578.13) and bushings are always changed - the reason for the rapid depletion of the solenoids' life.

After replacement, adaptation of the automatic transmission is required. Usually both solenoids are replaced (EPC-line pressure and TCC-torque converter lock-up). The service life of EPC solenoids is relatively short, especially if the Teflon rings and bushings in the box are worn out. The EPC solenoid is usually the first to fail, but abnormal operation of the second solenoid (TCS) very quickly overheats and contaminates the oil, killing the valve body. If the bushings and Teflon rings are not replaced, the replaced solenoids will not last long. The remaining 6 EVS shift solenoids operate without overload, so they are changed much less frequently.

Bushings

Cylindrical plain bearings, as conventional bushings are called in catalogues, also act as seals in automatic transmissions. And the first most popular problem with automatic transmissions AL4, DP0, DP8 is bushing wear.

When the bushings begin to leak oil, there is not enough pressure in the bags and the computer forces the EPC solenoid to open the channel to its full cross-section, the pump operates at maximum load and the EPC solenoid begins to age rapidly. Working with insufficient pressure accelerates wear of the friction discs of the corresponding package; in this case, the oil quickly becomes contaminated.

When overhauling the automatic transmission, check the condition of the bushings, and when replacing the solenoid, be sure to check the hardest working bushings (critical wear - 0.100 mm):

  • Pump cover bushing, DP0/AL-4 (57.2x 54.8mm x13.7mm);
  • Large rear pump stator bushing (29x 26.0 mmx16);
  • Drum bushing E2/E1 (37.9 x 35.2 mm x17).

How to choose oil

This model is equipped with a four-speed AL4 transmission manufactured by PSA, for which the original transmission fluid is Mobil ATF LT-71141. To replace it, it is recommended to fill the Citroen C4 box with either the same gear oil or Renaultmatic D3 SYN, which has similar performance characteristics. For a partial replacement, you will need 3.0 - 3.5 - 4.0 liters, for a complete replacement - about 7. Please note that when replacing the lubricant, it is advisable to change the filter (catalog number 144010). The problem is that to do this you will have to disassemble the box (at least remove the oil pan), so during a partial replacement, which can easily be done in a garage, the filter is not changed.
