VAZ 21114 engine: characteristics, malfunctions and tuning


The 2111 engine available in the AvtoVAZ manufacturer’s line did not meet the Euro-3 environmental standards existing at that time. In general, the design satisfied the management of the manufacturer’s plant in terms of cost, and the users in terms of technical characteristics. Factory tuning made it possible to obtain a modification of the 21114 engine, different configurations of which comply with Euro-2, Euro-3 and Euro-4 standards.

Technical characteristics of motor 21114

Initially, the manufacturer AvtoVAZ built into the engine the possibility of industrial tuning. However, the number of design techniques is limited:

  • modernization of the combustion chamber;
  • relief of CVS.

In this case, the following technologies were used for engine 21114:

  • increasing the height of the cylinder block by 2.3 mm, changing the cylinder head threaded connection to M12 x 1.25 mm;
  • use in the engine of a crankshaft from 11183 for a piston stroke of 75.6 mm;
  • installation of pulley and flywheel, ShPG from 2110;
  • enlargement of the combustion chamber to dimensions of 5 x 8.1 cm.

After replacing the pairwise-parallel injection with a phased one, the engine layout changed; for the convenience of repair departments, a special marking 11180 is applied to the cylinder head. The designers were not tasked with increasing power, but the cylinder volume still increased by 0.1 liters in comparison with the original ICE 2111.

Design features of the Lada 21114 8 valve engine

This engine is essentially a further development of the well-known VAZ unit VAZ 2111. The designers, first of all, slightly increased the height of the cylinder block, as well as the piston stroke; as a result of modernization, the working volume of this power unit increased from 1.5 to 1.6 liters. Also, pairwise parallel fuel injection was abandoned here in favor of phased injection. A lot of work has been done by AvtoVAZ engineers in terms of reducing emissions, and the latest modifications of this engine even complied with modern EURO 4 standards.

On another assembly line of the plant in Togliatti, a similar engine with the VAZ 11183 index was produced. The differences between the engines consisted of a different flywheel, crankcase, starter and clutch basket. Otherwise, both engines were absolutely identical, but were intended for different models.

Model features

The developers have built into the 21114 engine a potential of within 120 hp. With. without reducing service life. In the fuel system, the return line is replaced by an injector ramp, which by default is equipped with either Boshevsky 0280-158-022, or yellow VAZ 20734, Siemens injectors. Instead of the ignition module there is a coil with 4 pins; the ECU uses an M7.9.7 or January version 7.2 controller.

The cooling system is equipped with a new thermostat, and the internal combustion engine includes an 80-amp generator. The repair manual contains a step-by-step description of all operations, for example the procedure for changing the oil. The manufacturer recommends not using turbines when upgrading engines with your own hands.

Reliability, weaknesses, maintainability

These three main indicators complement the technical characteristics of the engine in sufficient detail and give a more complete picture of the power unit.

Reliability

VAZ-21114 is one of the few engines with high reliability. Car owners have repeatedly spoken about this on forums. Car service technicians share the same opinion.

For example, the engine of a Lada Kalina 1117 with a mileage of 130 thousand km was inspected. The result was amazing. The pistons are clean, the hone on the cylinder walls is preserved, and there is no carbon deposits on the valves.

The car owner draws attention to the fact that the oil was changed after 7-8 thousand km, and the gasoline for the first 90 thousand km was exclusively AI-95, then it was replaced with AI-92.

Reliability is clearly evidenced by the fact that with a lifespan of 150 thousand km declared by the manufacturer, the engine lasts for more than 300 thousand without repair. And this is not the limit.

The engine has a large margin of safety. With proper tuning, its power can be increased to 180 hp. With. It should be taken into account that such modification of the motor is very complex, expensive and significantly reduces the declared service life.

The reliability of the motor is significantly increased by reducing the maintenance time, using high-quality technical fluids and its reasonable operation.

Weak spots

In general, the VAZ-21114 is considered a successful power unit, but it failed to avoid weak points. According to reviews from car owners and car service workers, the engine has all the VAZ “sores”.

Tendency to overheat. Many have had to deal with this unpleasant phenomenon during operation. The most common cause of overheating is a thermostat and water pump that were not properly adjusted by the manufacturer. If a problem occurs, they will have to be replaced with new ones. There is no other way out of this situation.

Unstable idle speeds cause a lot of trouble. As a rule, they occur when sensors (mass air flow sensor or air flow sensor) fail. Less commonly, due to contamination of fuel supply system elements.

Failed sensors must be replaced. The fuel system needs to be flushed. The malfunction in the first case occurs due to the fault of the plant, and the second falls almost entirely on the shoulders of the car owner.

Refueling with low-quality fuel and untimely maintenance are the main components that cause clogging of the fuel system.

Electrical malfunctions. In this case, the author of the malfunctions is, just like the thermostat and pump, an unfinished ECU (21114-1411020). In addition, the engine often stalls and jerks at idle due to a faulty ignition coil.

The same behavior of the motor can be caused by burnt-out valves if their thermal clearance is not adjusted in a timely manner.

Minor “standard” problems do not bring joy to the car owner, such as oil leaks from under the valve cover, malfunctions of the fuel pump, unauthorized knocking in the engine compartment (usually unadjusted valves knock).

If any malfunction occurs, you must immediately seek help from specialized car service specialists. Timely detection and elimination of the problem in most cases saves the car owner from serious (and therefore costly) engine repairs.

Advantages and disadvantages

Since the 21114 motor is already an improved version of the 2111, there are no obvious shortcomings here. The main “diseases” of internal combustion engines are:

  • intense heating of the pistons - there are no special nozzles for oil cooling; they will appear only in later versions of the manufacturer;
  • cylinder head – not suitable for other engines

The VAZ-21114 engine was created in 2004. It was first presented to the general public in the same year at the AvtoVAZ auto show. The basis for the development of the new power unit was the famous VAZ-2111. Essentially, the new engine is an improved version of its predecessor.

ICE production has been established in Tolyatti. Engine production continued until 2013.

Initially, it was planned to equip the promising Lada Kalina and Lada Priora with this unit. But later this engine began to be installed on other car models.

The VAZ-21114 is a gasoline in-line four-cylinder aspirated engine with a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 81.6 hp. s and a torque of 125 Nm.

Don’t forget to maintain the engine regularly. It is recommended to change the timing belt of the VAZ 21114 engine every 70 thousand kilometers, even though manufacturers have set the bar at 100 thousand kilometers. It's better to do this in advance than to face a cliff.

Changing the oil is also a necessary procedure. The lubricating fluid along with the filter must be changed after 20 thousand kilometers. It is recommended to replace the remaining filter elements in the form of an air and cabin filter after 40-50 thousand.

Also, do not forget about adjusting the thermal clearances of the valves. It must be carried out every 45-50 thousand kilometers. It is better to contact a specialized service for this, where the craftsmen will be able to select special adjusting washers.

Causes of breakdowns and elimination

Thanks to the deep grooves in the pistons, the 21114 engine does not bend the valve, reducing the frequency of overhauls until the full service life of the piston group or rings is exhausted. However, there are smaller faults characteristic of it:

  • Reliability. Timely maintenance and proper operation allow it to be used for a long time. If you take good care of the engine, it can cover distances of up to 300 thousand kilometers without major repairs.
  • The motor does not bend the valve. Like almost all 8-valve engines with a timing belt drive, it is equipped with special pistons with recesses. This ensures that the pistons do not contact the valves in the event of actuator failure.
  • The VAZ 21114 injector engine has a well-thought-out power supply system, and a carburetor is excluded from its design. This leads to the fact that the batteries practically do not need to be maintained and the owners forever forget about cleaning clogged jets.
  • Optimal dynamics. Despite the fact that the power is not so great compared to modern engines, it is sufficient for moving around the city in normal mode. This is unlikely to be enough for street racers, but it is enough for everyday use.
  • Large margin of safety. All elements of the power structure are made from high-strength materials, so with the right approach to tuning, maximum power can be increased to 180 horsepower using well-known upgrades.

By default, the 21114 engine has a power of about 82 hp. With. To safely increase this characteristic to 120 hp. With. Several types of tuning are used:

  • replacing the standard camshaft - modifications of the Dynamics 118 or Nuzhdin 10.93 are usually used;
  • installation of a split-type gear - additional phase adjustment is required, power increases to 85 hp. With.;
  • 54 mm damper with receiver – it is necessary to install a zero resistance filter;
  • modification of the intake tract - polishing the channels, ensuring their equal length;
  • replacing the exhaust manifold - spider configuration 4:2:1 on the exhaust manifold (direct-flow);
  • valve relief - T-shaped modifications are used;
  • modification of the cylinder head - milling on a machine.

Additionally, instead of the standard piston group, you can install a lightweight kit from Priora, completely suitable in size. Chip tuning is useless for this engine.

Thus, the 21114 engine became an improved version of the basic version 2111. Most of the components and parts were used from the manufacturer’s previously existing engines to reduce costs while achieving Euro-3 standards. However, unique units also appeared, which were then used in subsequent versions of VAZ engines, for example, cylinder head and crankshaft.

Problems

But despite the large number of positive qualities, the power unit, according to the classics, did not turn out to be simply ideal. It is still characterized by a fairly large number of common problems that owners may encounter:

  • The motor may begin to overheat. The reason for this problem is the very low quality of some parts, among which are the thermostat and the pump. As a rule, it is these spare parts and their failure that are the main cause of elevated operating temperatures.
  • While idling, the speed may begin to fluctuate. In this case, you should pay attention to the sensors of the VAZ 21114 engine, first of all to the IAC, and then move on to the mass air flow sensor and air metering sensor. But you don’t need to immediately purchase new spare parts, since you can often cope solely with cleaning.
  • It is not uncommon to encounter problems with electronics. This is due to capricious electronic control units 21114-1411020. As practice shows, it is these blocks that are purchased in specialized stores more often than other parts.
  • The engine may begin to jerk or stall, and immediately the most common reason is said to be an insufficiently reliable four-terminal ignition coil. Much less often, the cause of this malfunction is burnout of one or more valves.
  • There are also many other minor problems with the internal combustion engine. Since the design does not have hydraulic compensators, valves under the hood may begin to knock. The VAZ 21114 engine gaskets also leave much to be desired, so oil leaks occur regularly. It is not uncommon to encounter a fuel pump failure.
